As others have experienced, this lawyer has lied so many times to me and has had every excuse he can make up. You have to chase him down for weeks, while calls and emails go ignored. When he finally answers, he has an excuse. The most recent one being that his wife broke her foot so he couldn't mail a check for a month. 2 weeks after that, still no check and he claims it was lost in the mail. He lied about calling me, stating that he called and his call went to VM. Cool story, except that I don't have VM on my phone. I had to tell him if he's gonna lie to at least make it believable. If he had actually called, the phone would've rang and then after a few rings he would've heard a busy signal. He's handling another issue for me where my old company refuses to transfer my 401k to another account. That case started in 2020, 2 years ago!!!! He has given me the run around. When I contacted that company, they told me he hadn't contacted them. When everyone has the same story about him except him... He has had other complaints made about him to the State Bar too. He was contacted July 2022 at the request of my attorney. He stated that my attorney was “an idiot that didn’t know what he was doing “. He went on to profess how “talented and experienced” he was and assured me he could do a much better job. He also went into detail about his experience in the area where I live, specifically that he was very familiar with the judges, therefore would have a much better opportunity of winning my cases. He demanded a $5000 retainer to manage my three cases. It was made clear to him that the cases had been negotiated and they were ready to be litigated. The cases needed to be filed. He assured me that “one of his best friends” was an attorney that specialized in dog law and he was “very familiar with what needs to be done”. If my first attorney and Charles had not pressured me into switching attorney’s mid-way, I would never have done so.
In less than two weeks, early August, I was sued by one of my cases in another state. Charles did not reach out to the attorney, nor did he discuss the case with the attorney, or file litigation as he stated he would do. The result was me being sued.
He also stated on multiple occasions that he had attorneys in Virginia that would assist with the court case that was filed. He declined to do help with this, even after repeatedly being informed that default judgments were pending etc. and I was in serious jeopardy of losing the case completely. He was informed repeatedly that I was struggling to find an attorney to assist with the case and needed his assistance. He refused by not responding.
In fact, Charles on more than four occasions, stated he was filing litigation in my cases on a specific date, and never did so.
Eventually he did file one case, I have yet to see the case in its entirety despite repeatedly requesting a copy of the litigation to check for accuracy. He informed me that the party had a new attorney in NC, in fact his “best friend”. He declined to provide the name or how he knew this attorney was involved. He was told he had to contact the AKC to verify the submission of the case due to a deadline established by the AKC. He refused to contact the AKC stating “I filed it on time, that should be sufficient”. He was informed the AKC could and would act, regardless of a submission date, if they were not contacted. He told me he was going to contact them and did not, subsequently a decision was made by the AKC that increased the complexity of my case and the expenses.
He eventually filed a second case. This was after he lied and stated the case was filed on X date, when in fact was not. It was verified by the court clerk that he did not file when he stated he did. He allowed this to drag on for several weeks while I was emailing the AKC, and him, that the case was completed, I was waiting for a copy of it. When he did file, after I threatened to turn him into the NC state Bar, he eventually gave me a copy of this filing and it was riddled with mistakes. The entire case was completely inaccurate. He stated he wanted me to send him the corrections and he would file those corrections within three or four days. Those dates have come and gone and the corrections have not been filed. The case is completely wrong and is not winnable as submitted. He has refused to respond to my multiple attempts to contact him.
On more occasions than I can recall, he has refused to respond to phone calls, emails, and text messages. He has repeatedly stated he was going to do ABC on X date, and not done so. In fact it was not until almost two months into the cases that he finally, supposedly, reached out to the opposing counsel ‘s.

I now believe he is acting as he is to "get fired" so he can keep my monies and do nothing. He has committed malpractice and he has failed to act in good faith as is mandated by the North Carolina state bar. He has been reported to the north Carol state bar for his malpractice. More...

He is a liar; he is a thief, and he has no business lying to people that he can help them when he has no intention of doing so but will take your money and run. I found Charles on the Lawyer.com referral site and it was a blessing. I read the reviews online about his firm and was hesitant at first to work with him, I asked him about them and he was very upfront. I needed him for my custody case, I had called about 5 different attorneys and they were charging ridiculous fees for just a retainer! FRAUD!!! Paid him in full for a immigration case and came to find out he never end out in any paperwork!! Now my fiancé is getting deported. If tried to reach out to him and his assistant numerous of times and they will not answer! I will be reporting him even if I have to 100 times! Please do not use this fake lawyer for any case you may have please take my advice. He handled my case well. He did his best in the given situation. Rates are decent. I would hire him again if needed. I read previous reviews and it sounds like they are complaining about a personality clash, not about a "bad" lawyer. He is straight up honest with you about the issue you're dealing with. Sounds like the bad reviews came from those with the new way of thinking of "don't tell me no or anything I don't want to hear". He doesn't sugar coat it. He tells it like it is and that is a trait you actually want in a good lawyer. I did have to chase him down a few times due to schedules. But in the long run, the job got done and the outcome was a result of him doing his best. His assistant, Lupe, is great as well. She is on top of anything that comes up. They make a good team. Charles met our needs perfectly. His rates were reasonable and we were very satisfied with the work. Also, since he was a notary we didn't have to find or hire one. Would definitely use him again!
