About

Greece was once the crossroads of trade between east and west. Its cuisine borrows from that ancient legacy, blending the vibrant spices and robust flavors of the Mideast, Mediterranean and Europe into its own distinctive tradition. At Kali Greek Kitchen, inspired by our families' Aegean roots, we celebrate our proud heritage.

I ordered the chicken and rice plate, and everything on the plate was delicious. The rice was amazing, and the chicken was tender and delicious. The tzatziki was fantastic. Another great thing about this restaurant is that there is virtually no wait for the food once you order, and the waiters/waitresses were very kind when answering questions. Overall a fantastic restaurant. I highly recommend coming here if you are into Greek food. More...

So as luck would have it jury duty presented us with multiple opportunities to try new places on California avenue. Having had a huge lunch the previous day we wandered into Kali looking for something a bit lighter. Its a small place with indoor/outdoor seating. you order from the register, get your number, and find a spot which was fine as we were a bit early but the place was backed by the time we got our food. Beef Salad: The salad came with two skewers of beef. The ground beef was well seasoned, perfectly cooked, and had that right about of toothsome without being rubbery. The greens were fresh and the vinaigrette was applied with a deft touch. Just enough to assert itself but not enough to overwhelm. It was a large salad and there was just the right amount of feta and its salty creaminess onset the dressing perfectly.  Zucchini Fritters: They were just okay. The elements were there but the insides were a bit underdone for my taste. Chicken Plate: Gyro chicken which was well seasoned and tasty. The accompanying elements were all good. The rice and orzo was perfectly cooked and the orzo added a nuttiness to it. The greek salad was a touch bland but fresh, and the yogurt dill sauce helped balance out the richness fo the chicken. Service was quick and friendly. The only issue is one of parking which hopefully once the structure is built that will solve the problem More...

Amazing spot that my wife and I both really enjoy as our go-to restaurant in the Bay Area. I picked up the fish rice plate just about every time. A whole branzino and a generous array of sides for $15? Amazing value.I'll cover the rice plate contents in the same order I eat them, saving my favorites for last. =)Salad:The Greek salad tastes very refreshing with fresh cucumbers, tomatoes, olives, chickpeas, and onions under a thin layer of lemon vinaigrette that adds just enough flavor without over-saturating the veggies with sourness or calories. My wife always gets dressing on the side but had no qualms with the amount of dressing here.Rice:The rice and orzo mix has a nice buttery complexion that makes it easy to gobble up. The portion here may even be a bit too big. There's more to go so don't feel bad if you can't finish the rice up.Fish:On to the star of the show: the amazing branzino. I usually find this at restaurants by itself for over $20. At Kali Kitchen, the fish is always cooked very tender with just the right amount of light flavoring so that it's never flavorless or salty. As with the vegetables, the branzino tastes very fresh with no fishiness. Around half the time I go, the chef is also able to cook the skin so that it's delightfully crispy. I normally avoid fish skin but the taste and texture is like eating potato chips when they get this part down. Overall, I always devoured the branzino and never needed the lemon provided. Just eat and enjoy!Bread:I end the meal with flatbread, which is chewy and just mildly sweet enough to satisfy my cravings for dessert--most of the time at least. I think the sauce provided alongside the plate is for the pieces of flatbread although I've never needed to use it.The rest:From time to time, we grab a la carte sides, which aren't explicitly listed on the menu: chicken skewers (great flavor!), beef skewers (OK but not as tasty as the chicken), and dolma (wife loved them). I also succumbed to enjoying some baklava occasionally. At times, the baklava tasted solid with a moderate level of sweetness and crumbing--no dripping syrup or overwhelming butter taste here! Other times, the baklava was exceptionally well balanced with a pleasant nutty tone and layering that held together on the plate yet melted away in my mouth. A baklava order comes with 2 pieces so be careful about over-ordering.Service-wise, Kali Kitchen is like a sit-down where the waiters bring over plates and take care of them afterward. Style-wise, the restaurant has a very casual atmosphere and often prepares food in the same time range as a fast casual joint. There are always open spots for dining in so it's a no-brainer that when my wife and I don't know where to eat for the day, we end up going to Kali Kitchen. More...

Ordered food for delivery for a dinner with work colleagues. I had such a hard time deciding what to order because everything on the menu sounded delicious, so I am sure I will go back in person to the actual restaurant to try other options, especially since I love Greek food. Food:- Lamb Salad--$14A generous portion of lamb, but it was light and super satisfying. The lamb was very tender and wonderfully flavored. The Persian cucumbers and tomatoes were crisp and fresh, and the Kalí Greens were dressed in a bright, clean lemon-oregano vinaigrette. Some fresh mint and feta were the finishing touches to make for a filling meal. Tips:- The menu has many options: 5 protein choices, including vegetarian, and you can get it as a pita sandwich, as a rice plate, or as a salad. More...

The ambiance of this place is unparalleled, as you can easily feel that you are in Greece on a sunny afternoon. The management goes out of their way to provide authentic Greek dishes, and taste. I had the vegetarian rice plate, and lemonade (generous quantity, unique packaging) here which were okay. Not a big fan of the Zucchini fritters. I think my friends who have had lamb and fish here like the food. However, my biggest issue is the lack of more vegetarian options and the vegetarian option not being tasty enough. Being the indecisive person I am, I couldn't decide if I wanted Italian, Mexican, or Greek. Once my brain finally battled it out, I decided to try Kali Greek Kitchen, because 1) the restaurant itself is so cute and 2) the people sitting outside seemed to be enjoying their food. Well, I'm glad I chose to eat at Kali that evening (and little did I know, I would be coming back the next week). Here's the roundup of the rating:+1 star for fast service+1 star for bright ambiance and cute decor+1 star for consistent and healthy food, as well as options for vegans and meat eaters alike+1 star for convenience (they sometimes have an iPad out so you can order and pay directly from there)Vegetarian Rice Plate - 4.5 STARSThis rice plate is extremely tasty and filling. The zucchini fritters (each plate comes with four) were fried very well - the outside was crisp, while the inside was warm and soft. The fritters were quite filling, so I'd recommend taking them home or sharing with someone else if you can. The chickpea rice was sooo good..I don't know how they make it! The pillowy rice had a touch of salt and perfectly cooked chickpeas sprinkled throughout. The plate also had a side of cucumber salad (for the vegans: I think this has cheese, so ask for the salad without cheese!) which was a lighter side compared to the other carb-heavy components (fritters, rice, and pita slices). And the pita was such a pleasant surprise! This is the perfect bite: a fritter dipped in the yogurt sauce, a bite of pita, and a few slices on pickled onion (add pickled onion for additional charge!). Fish Salad - 4 STARSWow, you get a whole filet of grilled fish! Loaded with Omega-3 and protein, this fish salad is a healthy choice if you're trying to fulfill your daily protein levels. The salad leaves tasted fresh and crunchy (no one likes wilted salad leaves...)! I enjoyed the touch of orange, which added another dimension of flavor to the dish. The calamata olives added saltiness to the otherwise mellow salad. Overall, this salad is a filling, solid meal.Next, I really really really want to try their baklava! And maybe the Fraiche frozen yogurt..I have an eternal craving for that stuff... More...

Souvla for the South Bay! This place is has great food and super cute vibes, with both inside and outside seating and has really friendly staff. The food is delicious here and their flavorful marinades on the meats bring you the bold flavors of Greek food that you want. My favorite is the chicken salad because it's fresh but also super filling. They have vegan and vegetarian options too (both of those salads are also quite delicious) which isn't always so common at Greek restaurants. I really recommend getting either the french fries or rotisserie potatoes, orrrr get them both! They are fluffy yet crunchy, deliciously seasoned, and just all around yum. Although, I have this theory that basically any time I order ang form of potatoes at a Greek restaurant I'm extra in love (maybe the oregano just is the secret to making my tastebuds happy? Maybe.) The frozen yogurt here is good and the topping options are the same as they are at Souvla buttttt somehow the frozen yogurt is a little different than the one in SF. It's still delicious but somehow tasted more chalky/icy than the rich and creamy one at Souvla. Maybe it's not fair to be comparing but I am and would like for the South Bay version to be just as rich! I am so happy that this place has opened up here and I can now go as frequently as I want! I definitely recommend checking this place out! More...

Gyro meat is all lamb, so if you are not used to lamb meat, you might want to order a regular portion. But if you are hungry, double the portion is a way to go. Fantastic Lamb Salad!!!!  Before attending a Theatreworks play at the nearby Lucie Stern Theatre, we had dinner at Kali Greek Kitchen.  We chose this place based on the Yelp reviews, which especially recommended the Lamb Salad. So, we definitely ordered the Lamb Salad ($14), which was a large bowl of salad, with feta cheese, topped with a lot of delicious, tender, slices of lamb. The dressing, cheese, and salad was the perfect foil for the lamb, resulting the a delectably delicious taste sensation.  We highly recommend this dish!  Fantastic!!!We also ordered the Lamb Rice Plate ($15), which was delicious lamb served with pita, rice, tzatziki, and a tomato cucumber (both very fresh) and cheese salad.  By itself, if we also did not have the Lamb Salad, this would have been a delicious, great dish.  Compared with the Lamb Salad, it was clearly in the number two position.  (But it is extremely tasty). My wife had the Strawberry Basil Lemonade ($3.50), which was tasty, but was more of a lemonade taste and less of strawberry basil taste. For dessert, we had the Loukoumades ($5), which was a small bowl of sweet dough balls, moist with a sweet sauce inside the balls.  It reminded me of an Indian sweet, but not as sweet.  It was a nice finish to the meal. The restaurant has several tables inside and outside. You order and pay at the counter and then when the food is ready, a server brings it to your table. The ambiance is lacking, but the taste of the food makes this a five star rating, in my opinion. More...

I was expecting typical "Mediterranean restaurant" fare, but no, this is a standout spot for exceptional Greek food with only a little overlap with your standard hummus and falafel shops. It's hard to pinpoint what I like best about this place. The ingredients are high quality, the flavors punchy and sublime. The menu is peppered with hard-to-find dishes, and so far, every choice has been a winner. It's easy to eat healthfully/indulgently/vegetarian here and to have a great meal. The staff are exceptionally friendly. It's a good spot to bring a kid. Even the little water carafes seem special and lovely. Kali is all-around great. My *favorite* thing here is the lamb salad: the meat is flavorful, moist and crispy, almost like lamb carnitas. The greens mix is hearty, with a generous dose of salty feta, and an herb lemon dressing I'd buy of bottle of if offered. If they offer you some spicy sauce on the side, say yes: your taste buds will love the glowing heat and subtle sweetness of the red pepper paste. A single order is almost too much for one person. If you're not ravenous, consider splitting the salad with a friend and adding side of whipped feta & pita and/or topping the salad with some crispy, fluffy zucchini fritters to round out the meal. I desperately want to give their desserts a shot, but I've never left enough room. They serve Fraiche frozen Greek yogurt with a variety of delicious toppings (honey and walnut; olive oil & sea salt; Amarena cherries), all of which make me salivate. I have it on good authority that their baklava is top notch, and those tiny Greek donuts (Loukoumades) are begging to be tried. I'll be back (& back & back & back)! More...
