I train behavioral conditioning along with obedience.
The reason that so many training programs fail is the emphasis on obedience over behavior. Obedience is what you tell a dog to do, behavior is what your dog chooses to do.

Dog Training

We joked that Frankie was going to boot camp and to boot camp he went :) but Rich was the perfect balance of teacher and nurturer. He brought out the best in Frankie and corrected most of his bad habits. With instructions for continuing the program at home Frankie is now a happier, calmer, better trained and socialized dog. We will keep up the training for which Rich laid the ground work. Rich continues to check in on Frankie and me on a regular basis with cheerleading and coaching encouragement. Highly recommend ! In late January, my wife and I attended a wedding out of town, and this would be the first time Tully (a 7-month-old Portuguese Water dog) would be away from us for an extended period. Rich was fantastic in his communication with us while we were away and sent us daily videos of her progress in training. We were very nervous to leave her, but Rich completely understood and took the time in the weeks leading up to her training session to make us more comfortable and meet with us several times to get to know him. His training videos and updates quickly reassured us that we did the right thing in trusting Rich with our puppy as we could see immediate improvement, and we were very impressed with her progress by the end of a week in Rich’s care. Since picking her up (~6 weeks), we have noticed an incredible transformation in Tully. Some of the aspects we needed assistance with were her jumping on counters while preparing food, recalling off-leash, and jumping on people when they entered our house. Rich laid the foundation for us, and we continued with his training methods. We have noticed a tremendous change in her temperament, but this has not changed her active personality. We were afraid that training too early would change Tully’s personality; however, Rich was able to alleviate all our concerns and assured us that Tully would still be able to be a puppy but would begin to learn what is acceptable/safe behavior. This is precisely what happened; she started learning what good behavior was and how she was rewarded for it.

Since her time training with Rich, he has reached out on multiple occasions asking how Tully is doing and how WE are doing, using the skills to ensure that this change in her behavior remains. Through our interactions with Rich (before the week-long training), he made us feel comfortable with his techniques and methods, which have proven effective. Tully will try to test her boundaries (being cheeky), but Rich has made it clear that we are now in charge of enforcing what is/is not acceptable/safe behavior. Rich has continued to be very gracious in his communication and is still willing to answer any questions we may have months after sending Tully to K9 Reset.

I cannot thank Rich enough for his guidance and for treating Tully like his own dog when he was providing care/training for her. When we came to pick up Tully, there were times when she would gravitate towards him, which meant the world to us, as she trusted him. To build a bond in a short amount of time speaks to Rich’s passion and dedication to what he does.

Rich is an absolutely incredible trainer-- and I say this as an owner and also as a dog trainer myself. I reached out to Rich a year ago for help with my aggressive (with a 5 count bite list), reactive, 7lb chihuahua who was going through the adolescent stage (1 yr) and was impossible to housetrain (or so I thought). My dog loves HIS people but disliked ANYONE else and would not hesitate to bite. I was at my wit's end and knew I needed a trainer who, unlike myself at the time, was e collar saavy. I chose Rich to work with for a number of reasons. Firstly, he has the dogs with him in his home for the board and train-- he doesnt kennel your dog in a separate building overnight. That is huge to me! After speaking to a handful of trainers who incorporated e collars into training, I decided to give K9 Reset a try because not only was Rich extremely knowledgeable but he is kind and respectful and really took his time to talk to me openly about his process and protocols, to reassure me and address my concerns (regarding the misinformation surrounding e collars) and that essentially my dog wouldn't be harmed, and ensured that my dog would benefit from the training. Even as a trainer, I definitely had concerns because of the plethora of misinformation out there regarding e collars and anything that deviates from all positive/force free so I was cautious, but I was also ready for and needed change.

Fast forward to today-- a year from my dog's board and train and he is a totally different dog! He is 100% housebroken, never has accidents in the house, he loves his crate and sleeps there every night- no problems at all and he stays dry all night long. I take my dog hiking and for walks and he is so well behaved that no one knows he's not friendly until I inform them (and that no, he doesn't want to say hello)-- he is calm and walks so good with me. He can walk by people or dogs and no reaction-- even children. My dog still isn't "friendly" to strangers but now he behaves so differently and so much better and calmer-- which is what I hoped for. As a trainer and owner, I want to express... it is imperative to follow through and continue the training after your dog comes home no matter where they train. Rich shares so much information regarding your dog and how to continue the training with them at home so you can be successful. I not only became a better owner because of Rich but also a much better trainer! At the go home session, I got to meet Rich's wife Sue and both of them shared so much valuable information and feedback about my dog that truly helped me to be more objective when I work with my dog. I owe so much thanks to them both.

Rich taught me so much and anytime I have issues, I reach out and he is there. I also have a german shepherd and have done 3 sessions with Rich during times where I needed an objective opinion and effective help. I can't tell you how much I appreciate everything Rich has done and taught me-- his help has been invaluable! I know many trainers and have worked side by side with many--- Rich is truly one of the best trainers in the area!

Whether your dog is large, medium, small, or teacup... if you want to change their problem behavior and create positive change... you are in GREAT hands with Rich. You won't regret it or be disappointed and you'll absolutely see results.

We found Rich through the highly regarded reviews here and have returned to reiterate the same! We brought our 7mo Bracco Italiano to him. She could not walk on her leash, jumping up on guests was an issue, and only listened to us on her own terms. After our first session with Rich when we received the prong collar, we were finally able to take her for meaningful walks and are still able to do so every day. We followed up and did another session with the ecollar, which made a huge difference in her recall and behavior. We dropped her off for a week long boarding with Rich and picked her up as a brand new dog. The whole time she was with him, he sent us pictures and videos throughout the week and gave us a list of ongoing instructions to keep up with the training upon departure. She consistently listens to us now, we are able to take her to the dog park with no issues and is much better about greeting guests. Rich has consistently followed up with us on how things are going and helps when new things may come up. He also made it very clear that we may return if any new issues arise. We would highly recommend Rich to train your dog. More...

Rich is amazing with my dog. Sadie has gone through many trainers and when I moved to Massachusetts I was worried about who I could board her with. Rich was accommodating, worked with me and my dog. Sadie is much calmer on walks. While she was boarded I was updated often with texts and videos. This made me feel so much more comfortable with boarding her. I will be using Rich every time I need to board my dog! More...

3 January 2024

So it's 90 days post training with Rich. My neighbor just stopped me on the street and said "my goodness your dog seems so relaxed! What happened?"

I thought I had great control over my 4 yr old rescue dog until in recent months she started to become very reactive to other dogs on the leash. I live in downtown Salem, so the last thing I can or want to do is avoid people and their pets. And because she had grown up as a puppy on the streets of Houston, Texas she was given to eating absolutely ANYTHING! I've had her in the emergency room 3 times this year and was worried that the next trip would be fatal. I had so seclude her when I had company because she would just surf the counters for food and make everyone uncomfortable. I was also losing recall; she was startingto ignore me. So I was afraid I would not be able to get her to respond to me in an emergency situation. I was desperate and lucky to find Rich!

Rich is amazing! Within minutes of our first meeting he could tell that my timid by nature dog had become quite dominant in the relationship. The more fearful I became of her behavior, the more reactive and protective she became of me! The first time we met we started with the choke collar. I hate the name because the whole point of using it is to have a very loose hold on the leash and not to ever choke your dog. After one meeting Rich sent us away to practice. At our second meeting he showed us how to work with the eCollar. This is another tool that has a bad reputation because people don't know how to use it appropriately. Rich was a fantastic instructor!

Finally, we started week-long over night training. I was really hesitant to leave her, because we had already had to get over abandonment issues when I first adopted her. For a dog that can be quite timid around people, especially men, she had no hesitation going to Rich or watching me walk out the door. She knew he was safe! Rich sent me short videos each day to show how she was responding to training, and getting along overall.

When I picked her up at weeks end, rich worked with us giving me specific details on how to work with the tools she had been trained with. The first couple weeks I was not a 100% consistent. UntiI I realized she thought the rules applied only when Rich was around. She was beginning to slip back into undesirable behavior. I got the message quickly that I had to stick with the plan if I really wanted to see success; not only for the time and investment, but for our relationship and overall happiness day to day.

Its 90 days later and I use the tools regularly. Although she is responding to commands quicker without there use. She's become quite a "good citizen" and will actually wait patiently with food in front of her until I give her the release command to eat it. I can leave the room and come back and she's still sitting there waiting patiently! Still, I realize she's a dog and by nature she will test me again, but I have the tools, language and commands to help her get back on track.

Rich checks regularly and I've been able to reach out to him when I have a question. Most recently Rich suggested working with a remote camera so that I can monitor her when I'm not there. (She likes to get into my closet and she has ruined several coats.)

If you are concerned about your dog's behavior do not hesitate to work with Rich. The training tools and tips that he provides will help them feel safe in their environment, knowing that you are in full charge. Then they can relax and be the best doggo ever!

Dog Training

Rich is an excellent trainer. My husky Loki was a spoiled dog and was allowed to do whatever he wants. So he had a lot of behavioral issues and could care less about what I wanted him to do. Our walks weren’t great, he listened to commands when he feels like it, loves to mark, he also escaped a couple times by removing his harness/leash, and jumping. After a week with Rich our walks have improved drastically. He actively checks in with me when we walk, listens more to commands, and is better in public spaces (less marking, easier to control, less reactivity to dogs and small animals). It is important to continue the training at home. I am happy with the service I was provided, and feel that my relationship with my dog is better for it. More...

Dog Training

So glad I found K9 reset. I contacted Richard for help with my 1 year old dog Archie (yorkie). I was having a hard time having him follow simple commands and our walks were terrible. My dog would bark at other dogs as soon as he saw them. It seemed the only way to have a peaceful walk was to walk him at night so that we wouldn’t encounter other dogs. After contacting Richard, he explained the services that he offered, we agreed that boarding would be best in our case. After completing one week of boarding I can see great improvement in Archie’s behavior. Richard explained in detail what he did in training and how to implement the same routine at home. Now I am able to take Archie out for walks and be confident that he will not go crazy as soon as he sees other dogs. He listens to commands and it is all around easier to be out with him. Thank you Richard. More...

Our shih-tzu is incredibly stubborn and impossible to train through standard approaches (treats, toys, praise). We sent him to Rich for a week of boarding/training. Rich dramatically improved our dog’s receptiveness to following commands, taught him multiple commands, and even more impressively, improved his confidence to the point where is no longer skittish around people or most other dogs and has stopped nearly all nuisance barking. Rich also provided us with all of the tools and instructions (very clearly given) needed for continuing training. We highly recommend Rich. More...

The best trainer ever!

I was heartbroken, thinking i may have had to give up my beloved tiny companion, a one and a half year old Yorkie. She barked at everything, woke me up barking at 4 am , attacked visitors to my home, attacked people on the street while on her leash, bit people’s ankles, including my children and grandchildren. She barked out of the car windows, and basically attacked anyone who came near me.

Rich saved my dog by educating ME about how dogs think. I began to understand that she thought she had to protect me, and as such was always on duty.
MY behavior had to change so that she could relax. There were many things I could change .

Amazingly, she trusted Rich immediately.
He took her for a week , and modeled the behaviors I would need to learn in order for her to relax. He let her know that he was in charge. He sent videos showing her progress, and when I picked her up he taught ME what to do, and most importantly WHY it worked , because of how dogs think. It all made sense. He wants dogs to have good lives. And people to understand their best friends. He is a
compassionate dog whisperer , and an educator. I’m extremely grateful to K-9Reset. I have my companion back for life.

16 August 2023

I had two training sessions with Rich to help me manage a dog reactive dog with bad recall. We had tried other training methods (clicker training in group classes, private instruction, daycare with training) and none were helping me have more control over my dog or lessening her anxiety when approached by other dogs (which triggers her aggression).

I found K9 Reset via Google search. It was easy to set up a call with Rich to describe my situation and talk about options. As I have an adult dog I've had for 4 years now who recently developed some issued, I didn't want to move immediately into the board and train.
I immediately appreciated Rich's flexibility to work with me as a private lesson client open to possibly boarding my dog with him after we'd done some basic training.

We did sessions with a prong collar and e-collar. I was interested in the e-collar from meeting other dog owners who'd had success with it, but I was nervous to try to 'teach myself' how to use it.
Rich walked me through how and when to use both during our sessions. We've only had the e-collar for about a month, and I'm taking things slowly, but I'm seeing these tools start to work. Rich gave extremely helpful hands-on instruction, gave me manageable homework to do, and checks in periodically to see how we're doing. I can tell he really cares about his clients and their success and I'm so glad I found him as a resource to help me with my dog. And, if I ever adopted another dog, I'd absolutely send them to Rich for training from the get go.

After a detailed search I decided to inquire with Rich about training for our 15 month lab/hound rescue.
Addie came to us by way of GA where she spent the beginning if her life chained to a tree, no training and I. The elements of GA weather with no shelter. She had no interest in praise, treats or rewards. She had an extremely high prey drive with extreme pulling on leash and a zest to escape and run away at the slightest moment.
After meeting Rich for a couple of private lessons we decided to send her to him for one week of “overnight camp” or boot camp.
I believe my words were “she has run away 8 times I’m sure we are just giving you a donation.” Was I wrong! Addie responds so well to him. He had her working hard-mentally. Every video we received was better than the one before. Especially leash free trail walking and running while he was biking.
Picking her up we still weren’t convinced one week had changed her. We realized it was us that needed the changing. We had to maintain his methods at home to optimize success. Two weeks later we had her in Vermont, NH and Maine all leash free, happy and obeying commands. It’s a work in progress. Mostly for us. We could not be more thrilled in our progress and hers.
Rich is a kind, personable and dedicated trainer. We feel so fortunate that an internet search led us to him. You will be too.

I had sent one of my dogs (4 male) to Rich when I noticed that after my other dog (1 male) was attacked by a dog on one of our walks, all training went out the window for both dogs. My older dog went to stay with Rich for the board and train for a week to (as the name suggests) reset his thinking and get him back on track, while I used the tools with my other dog at home. When Bear came back there were noticeable differences and I had the tools to continue the same training at home. I have owned many dogs in my lifetime and have always trained them myself. The dog I have now is a German Shepherd and at my age 75 the puppy has way more energy than I remember. With all my other dogs I had very little trouble with them because I had patience and energy. Now I have neither.

Rich was referred to me by a friend and at this point, I needed all the help I could get. Rich took the dog and gave him the basics and changed his attitude. He was a very obedient dog when we picked him up and the way Rich trained him made it easy for me to continue the training at home. The cost to have him trained was nothing compared to a well behaved dog. If you are having problems with your dog Rich is the one to go to you will not regret, it

TLDR: Hire Rich! He is worth every penny. Rich saved us from rehoming our dog!

We’ve had a loving, adorable and totally problem dog that we adopted as a puppy for 2 plus years. Ralph presents with extreme separation anxiety, whining, and scratching doors/furniture. He is also dog reactive to the point we have to limit his walks to odd hours of the day to avoid other dogs. Despite our best efforts, we couldn’t crate train him or leash train appropriately enough to give him the quality of life he deserves. Enter Rich… we found Rich from some online forums and liked his prior reviews. Rich is thoughtful, puts dog owners at ease, and his training is incredibly effective. The mini educator and Rich’s strict, but loving approach to training with it works like a charm! Rich was able to completely reset Ralph, take on the Herculean feat of crate and leash training him, and gave us an excellent start for his dog reactivity. We have a dog we can walk and play with again. Ralph understands how to behave in our home and gets more outside time because his behavior around others has improved so much! By sticking with the plan Rich outlined for us, we finally have control over our dog again and are happily cohabitating! Bonus… we started using Rich’s training methods on our older (more calm but more stubborn) dog and it works on him too! More...

Most pet owners want the best for their “fur babies”, and want the best in the home life together -
One of the most humbling experiences, but probably the most wisdom -filled; is to acknowledge that no matter ‘how smart we think we are’, if things aren’t working at home with our ‘pawed loves’, where EVERYONE gets to thrive, ‘SOMEONE’ might have a better way. That someone is Rich and K9- RESET for us. 🐾👍🏼
Rich is knowledgeable, experienced, and communicative at every step of the way with his process, (really important to us), so that we are confident and successful continuing his dedicated groundwork with our English Bulldog, Sugar.
For those who hold uninformed and uneducated judgments regarding E-Collar use, like I did for SO long and struggled,
the best advice that I can give is : Be open and get a consultation !
We have a complete positive ‘turn around’ in communication with Sugar! The anxiety and confusion that she was carrying previous to this training, is no longer an issue! Thank you Rich for your work with Sugar and US and your continued dedication, communication and support!
You have turned our house around where EVERYONE gets to thrive!

K9 Reset has been the best decision we have made for both us as owners and our pup to live a calm, structured and happy life. Being such lovers of dogs and this being our first dog (a lab), we did a lot of things that are not the right things; gave our pup the world with lack of structure. We were slowly losing control of our day-to-day with him, and the main reason for doing this training was so we as dog owners can properly train our boy in order to give him the structure he needs. We have been with trainers who really don’t care to train the owners at all and just want to make sure you sign up for the next class; all about the $$. Rich at K9 reset is quite the opposite. He cares way more about making sure we as the owners know how to properly train and handle our pup so we can ALL live a happy life with structure and control. Rich even starts off with an introduction session and a follow-up before the formal training begins. What really got me excited to even start working with Rich at K9 Reset is our initial conversation over the phone. No one wants to go to a trainer just to be scolded we are doing everything wrong. Rich made sure we felt positivity going into this and really felt like I was talking to someone who had been in my exact shoes, and truly wants to help. SO - we did a week boarding session where we got updates the entire time, videos, etc. so we could actually see the progress, the struggles, and the rewards of persistent, proper training. This already had us excited as we were learning along the way with our boy. When we came to pick up our boy we had another session with Rich showed us a lot of hands-on tactics in tough situations on how to properly handle and train our pup. We have had him home for a couple weeks now and let me tell you, our life with our dog is 10x better than what it was. Now, it is on us as the owners to actually follow the instructions from K9 Reset and stay persistent with training but Rich made sure we are equipped and ready to go for when we brought our boy back home. Rich still reaches out to check on our pup, how training is going, and offers Advice continuously to help continue proper training. K9 reset is the best decision you can make to get the “reset” you and your pup may just need, hands down. More...

I highly recommend using Rich’s reset program if you are looking to set a strong foundation for a healthy relationship with your dog.

Rich did a great job with our dog while we traveled for two weeks. She is now less reactive, more attentive to us on walks and overall has a calmer temperament and is aligned with our expectations at home.

Rich himself is a great guy and clearly cares about the dogs he trains. I’d recommend this program over a kennel any day.

Dog Training

I highly recommend Rich as a dog trainer. I found him when I had just rescued a big 3-year-old aussiedoodle who had issues I was unaware of. He had selective reactivity to people, no recall or obedience, issues walking on a leash, and no structure. I met Rich for a free consultation where he taught me how to use the prong collar on Benji. Within minutes, I had a calmer, more behaved dog. We then did the e-collar training followed by the week-long board and train program. I got daily texts and videos with updates as Rich was constantly checking in. Rich created a strong foundation for me to take over training and build on that. He sent a list of commands and instructions on what to do, checked in multiple times the week and month after, and has given advice over text and call when needed. Still, it’s important to remember that the week of training is not this one-time fix that helps solve the dog’s issues forever. It takes continuous training and daily effort from the owner to practice with the dog. But the result is beyond worth it! Now, nobody can believe how well trained Benji is and the incredible transformation he has made, including his previous owners! He walks and plays off leash, has recall, walks in a heal, knows many commands, has structure, and can be around people. Benji has become one of the happiest dogs I’ve ever met — he can finally be free in a safer way. More...

Rich was fantastic to work with. While Munch was at a week of board and train, Rich communicated everyday with texts and videos that showed us him working with Munch. Very smart way to train us to know how to get the same results once Munch came home. Rich provided a list of the commands he uses and what they meant so we are consistent. He checks in and gives us great advice if we are having any issues.
Munch has responded very well to his reset as have we.
I highly recommend K9 Reset.

I highly recommend Rich as the work he did with my ten month old Chesapeake was incredible. It is a stubborn breed and Rich has familiarity with it through his brother-in-law. Not only did Rich turn her around and get my wife and I on the right track, he demonstrated incredible empathy by taking her on very short notice due to an out of state funeral we had to attend. He also went above and beyond as Moxie caught a bug, front and back, literally as I dropped her to Rich. He could have sent me home with her, but said, "she'll be fine" and he took great care of her. Thank you, Rich!! More...
