My only regret is that we haven't been here before! It's tucked away but don't let that deter you. I had the oxtails over mashed potatoes - so rich and unctuous. And so tender that the bones pulled out clean. As my mom used to say - it was hormonal! My sides were the mac and cheese (creamy and full of flavor) and cabbage which was simply seasoned and a green break from the richness of everything else. Hubby had smothered pork chops and may have tried to lick these plate clean. His sides were the okra and tomatoes and greens. I'll admit, I've never had that type of greens before and i could have had a whole plate of just that. Overall probably one of the best places we've been to in a long time. I'm hesitant to write this review because finding this hidden gem and now writing about it may make them extremely busy. But here we are so settle in and let me tell you about a great cool place that I wish I had known about sooner. JW's Place is defintely worth finding! We walked in and you seat yourself, the owners daughter told us she'd be over with a couple menus except the owner beat her to it by a couple minutes. She then took our drink order and said our waitress Kayla would be over shortly to take our order. Kayla brought our drinks and took our order. My wife was between ribs and oxtail so she asked what she recommended (Which I kinda figured I would know the answer to). Kayla replied hands down the oxtail, she mentioned that it comes with either rice or mashed potatoes and two sides. My wife decided on the mashed potatoes which was definitely the right choice! Her other two sides were mac n cheese and cabbage. I ordered the smothered pork chop which came with rice (I think next time I'm going to see if I can substitute mashed potatoes because those were perfect, more on that later). Mine also came with two sides so I went with the okra & tomatoes and greens. As we waited they have tvs with various things playing all around the restaurant and some great music playing (Might have been a bit loud for the amount of people in the restaurant but not too loud). I saw that they are set up with a nice bar under what looks like some balcony seating, possibly a private party room or just additional seating for when they get busy. They also had a stage off to one side for live music. Our food arrives and talk about mouth watering. Everything looked great and smelled even better! We started by trying all the sides which was easy to do since they came in separate bowls. The okra and tomatoes were awesome, a bit salty but awesome! I ended up drinking the juice when I finished them. The greens... if they would have brought me more at the end of the meal I would have devoured them even though I was stuffed! That's how good they were and I actually told my wife I would do that exact thing when we were there. Her mac n cheese was creamy and cheesy like you want not overly done or chewy like you get at times. Her cabbage was tasty as well, done just right crisp and not cooked to death. Now for the entrees... I tried a bite of my smothered pork chop, the knife went thru it like butter. OMG the flavor... amazing, the cook on the chop... perfect. It had the perfect chew. Then I tried my wife's oxtail. It was melt in your mouth perfect! the sauce and mashed potatoes were the perfect accompaniment. Creamy mashed potatoes and oxtail you don't even have to chew all covered in an amazing sauce. I will say she won this round but not by much. We would have tried the peach cobbler if we had enough froom to try it. Maybe next time, which there will definitely be a next time which could be this week as a matter of fact. EVERY ONE IN THE BUILDING FROM THE HOSTESS TO THE COOK, WAS SUPER DUPER FRIENDLY, AND THE OWNER WAS AWESOME AND VERY, VERY WELCOMING. THEIR WAS A COUPLE OF HICCUPS. BUT I KNOW THEY CAN BE RECTIFIED . The food was Great Me and my Mom has been twice since they opened Aug 19 and will be regulars for sure, Mom Loved the Okra & Tomato, with her hot water cornbread she was in heaven, O and the Baby back Ribs, The Brisket Mom loved all her food and she can’t wait to try more things on the menu she said “now that’s good cooking “ and she should know she cooked and ran a soul food business for over 30 years now she gets to enjoy others Soul food cooking, I Really Enjoyed My Fish it was fried Perfect and the hot water Cornbread, Greens, Mac & Cheese, well Like Mom I enjoyed it all also, hope I can get some Green fried Tomatoes (smile), you know food is Good when your mom ask was there any leftovers the next day and of course there was and she eat it all even mine and she normally don’t eat leftovers. We ate dinner at JW's Place Soul Food & Barbeque tonight & they did not disappoint! The owners were friendly, down to earth & personable! ! Their customer service was superb from the owners, to the bartender, to the waiter to the Chef!!! The oxtails were fall off the bone tender, the fried chicken is the best.... The hot water cornbread was arguably the BEST i've ever tasted & altogether with THE succulent RIBS, collard greens, their signature Mac and cheese .. Our dinner MADE ME WANT TO go and purchase an air mattress and some pillows & SPEND several nights there eating my heart out!!!😂😂 But I'm not through!! They had A LIVE saxophonist playing music while we ate, The vanilla cake🎂 melted in my mouth & they serve REAL DAIQUIRIS that make your words slur a little 😂😂😂I PROMISE you're going to love this family owned business!!!! My Husband and friends bought tickets so we can see Calvin Richardson, Enjoy some good food and drinks, and support a black upcoming business. The event was supposed to start at 7, didn’t get started til after 8, the hostess announced that Calvin Richardson was there. About a hour later she start saying he is late, not only that she was downgrading his singing! The food was cold when they brought it to us, and the drinks came out in the smallest martini plastic cups. They were not apologetic AT ALL!!!! They tried to make us believe this was all his fought, We finally pulled up Calvin Richardson IG page and sees he had a concert last night in Alabama, Houston is nowhere on his tour dates until Sep. We were totally not pleased with this business and event they hosted, we were robbed out of 125.00 and because of this we will never visit there again!! Christians shouldn’t act this way!!! More...

Paid $125 for what was suppose to be a VIP experience to see Calvin Richardson. Instead we were seated outside in the heat behind the stage . Food was cold , barbecue was nasty and dry and the drink was the size of a shot that taste like juice . And on top of that was told Calvin was there at 9:30 and a hour later was told he didn’t show up. FALSE ADVERTISING!!! And in my opinion very rude to take people money and then say it’s not your fault that he didn’t come . I like to support black business but this is one I will not!!! More...
