Exquisite arrangements and unparalleled customer service! If you are looking for flowers for any occasion, Hingham Greenery is the best of the best. Ellen and Richard and the whole Hingham Greenery crew just did the flowers for our wedding and the bouquets, table arrangements, boutonnieres, ceremony flowers etc could not have been more perfect.  Ellen listened to our ideas, suggested great ideas and looked at our inspiration photos and on the day, totally surpassed all of our expectations.  Also, everything was delivered exactly when they said it would be and for the boutonnieres, bouquets, corsages for the grandmothers, small bouquets for the mothers were all clearly labeled helping the whole morning to be easy and stress free. They are incredibly lovely to deal with throughout the whole process, are extremely responsive and thorough. Their prices are unbeatable too. Ellen streamlined the whole process and we still don't know what we would have done without her!All our of guests raved about how gorgeous the flowers were and I still cannot stop looking at all the photos of them and cannot wait to get our details photos back from our photographer! When you think of places like Hingham and the rest of the South Shore, small businesses jump out at you. This doesn't mean that there aren't chain stores, but part of the beauty and charm of these towns is that they're careful about retaining their small-town charm amidst the generic and overly commercial palaver of chain stores that have to cater to a much wider audience. This brings me to Hingham Greenery. It's in this quaint building right in the middle of Downtown Hingham, and its earthy vibe stands in stark contrast to the more chic and antiseptic façade of Winston Flowers which is right next door. Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against Winston Flowers. They do a solid job, and the fact that they support NPR is also cool. But with something like 8 locations in major areas, they are a behemoth compared with Hingham Greenery. But being a chain has its pros and cons, and one of those cons is higher prices to cover the larger overhead. Another con is that whether a chain store survives or not in a given area is of less import than a single local business whose sole source of revenue is its solitary location. The result is usually that the solitary business has a greater connection to its surrounding community.So, I went into Hingham Greenery hopeful but realistic because I've been to Winston Flowers many times and it's tough to beat their slick operation. If you live in or very close to Downtown Boston or Cambridge and you want to impress someone with how much money you've just dropped on them for flowers, then just about everyone I know goes with Winston Flowers.But Hingham Greenery holds its own. I became curious about this place because several people I know who have good taste recently received flower arrangements from Hingham Greenery, and what they received was impressive. The shop is small but artfully decorated. It's like walking into a small garden with an overhead trellis. At most florists, the desk area is carefully demarcated to make it very clear where the point of sale occurs. But at Hingham Greenery, it's more subtle and organic. In fact, if the manager Richard hadn't been seated at a computer tucked away in a corner of the store, I wouldn't really have known where the front desk was. In many ways, it's like Brattle Florist in Harvard Square, which happens to be another fantastic place to get flowers. Richard was amiable and told me that the place has been in existence for 26 years. Considering that Winston Flowers set up shop right next door about 8 years ago, that gives you some idea that Hingham Greenery must be doing something right to stay in business. It's kind of like a small convenience store that survives despite a Stop & Shop opening up down the street. Their flowers looked great, and their fake flowers were so realistic that I brought one to the counter to ask what kind of flower it was because I had never seen it before. At that point the owner Ellen showed up and told me that it was a fake flower. Well, if this place is going to get fake flowers that appear so real, then you can extrapolate a tiny bit to understand how their real flowers look. I ended up buying a bunch of tulips for a friend, and a couple of weeks later she told me that they're still looking great. And the cost was reasonable. A place like Hingham Greenery is not going to have the volume discount pricing of a chain florist, so they are usually in the tough position of having to offer greater service with lower profit margins than their larger competitors.I've seen this situation play out in so many other retail spaces, so I have no doubt that it's true with Hingham Greenery. And what was probably most impressive was that despite all this, the people I know who have interacted with either Ellen or Richard uniformly tell me that they're grateful to serve the community. That kind of gratitude towards the community combined with competitive prices for an excellent product is why I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for flowers. If places like Hingham are to retain their small-town charm and tight-knit communities, then it's critically important that people patronize these small local businesses. More...
