Hidden Gem Between 2 Plazas! While looking for a place to have dinner late one night, the two of us found this hidden gem located between 2 plazas by accident. There were a handful of people having dinner inside, while a young male guitar player dressed in cowboy attire sang his heart out. The music was excellent and filled the room; however, we could still talk to each other without raising our voices. The dining area was clean and the decor was nice and dark, except for one large wall featuring an impressive longhorn with different colors of paint dripping from the horns. As a first-time patron our friendly server advised us to get the meat platter, which consisted of 4 smoked meats; brisket, pulled pork, turkey breast, and sausage. We favored the flavorful moist and tender brisket, pork, and sausage, with their BBQ sauce. We're not a fan of smoked turkey, but we had to try it, so don't ignore the smoked turkey if that's what you prefer. We selected potato salad and greens as our 2 sides, and they were both good. The overall experience was excellent for our first time, and looked forward to returning. While exiting we noticed a dinner plate being delivered to a nearby table with a huge baked potato covered in tender brisket. The gentleman who ordered it commented that it's one of his many favorites. We returned after vacation, all the while thinking about that brisket topped baked potato, and ordered two, topped with their tender juicy brisket (options include butter, chives, sour cream, and bacon), and it did not disappoint! This place was referred to me by a client, who said it's the best in Texas. Boy was he wrong! My personal favorite is 407 BBQ in Argyle, second Hutchins in Frisco. First of all, I feel as if I've had almost every good BBQ in DFW area. I always get their ribs and wet/moist brisket. The rib/ribs were from a dinosaur. 1 pound of ribs was one huge rib. Never seen ribs like this but if it's good, no problem. It wasn't good, tasted like roast, not a string seasoning at all. The sliced brisket was decent but not a string seasoning either. Ordered burnt okra and they were barely cooked normal. Overall it was a bust for me. I was bummed as we don't have a good BBQ in flower mound IMO. This was a nice, new restaurant, which is always scary for a BBQ place. However, the dishes were tasty. We ordered "The Butcher" which should have been 1/4 lb of 4 meats. The portions were significantly larger. We were there for lunch on a Sunday, and they were out of several things, so that was disappointing. They offer a Sunday brunch, which was a nice twist at a BBQ place. Our friends who ordered breakfasts loved it. Several of us ordered coffee and they brought us a selection of KCups to choose from. The ambiance of the place is nice and they have a great patio. I ordered the pork ribs, beef rib, and brisket with a side of German potato salad. The potato salad was out of this world good and really shocked me. The pork ribs were pretty good, but didn't have as much smoke flavor as I would've liked. The beef rib and brisket had absolutely ZERO smoke flavor at all. It tasted like they were cooked in an oven. I heated up some of the leftovers the next day and really tried my best to detect any smoke, but there was not even the slightest amount. We were really excited about trying out this new place, so we could have a nice, sit-down BBQ meal. My wife and I ordered two of the speciality sippers. While we were waiting, the server brought us two waters that we did not ask for, or touch throughout the meal (more on than that later). The drinks were subpar, and when we ordered a second mixed drink, it tasted like they didn't put any alcohol in it. We decided to try "The Butcher," supposedly one pound total of their 4 signature meats and 2 sides. The meats were OK, as the flavors all seemed similar, most likely due to the rub. The sausage and the turkey were good, but the brisket was very dry. The fries and Cole slaw were your standard store-bought fries and Cole slaw. Before we had finished our meal, our server placed the bill on the table. Once that happens, we are ready to leave, whether we want another drink or dessert. The final nail in our review is as we reviewed the bill, we noticed a $5.50 charge on our bill for the two waters, which as mentioned previously, we did not order or touch. We have used Harold Dean catering before and everyone at our parties has loved the food, so my husband and I decided to try dinner at the Smokehouse. We started with the fabulous "Peach Tree" cocktail and ended up ordering another round. We tried the dinner salads, which were large and had high quality greens, cheese, pecans, and good dressings. We ordered steaks from the grill (steaks are available Thurs- Sat, I believe). The filets were cooked perfectly, and we enjoyed our sides of fries and onion rings. The wait staff and the cooks were very kind and good at their jobs but the owner Aaron is the worst. I witnessed him yelling unprofessionally at his female employees even throwing a phone at one and hit her while and then he just sat at the bar talking to his friend. His employees deserve respect. Flavor was good in everything we tried! Everyone on staff was attentive and made sure everything was to our liking. As far as ambiance, the music was on point, but there was a bit of a blurred line between front and back of house (paperwork and shirts stacked in customer view). This restaurant took over the old Piranha sushi that sputtered for years in this location. The decor is more open space concept with one large room with table seating. The original bar looks to still be in tact here with outside patio seating as well. Place was clean and had that Smokey smell that you'd expect.<br><br>Took a few minutes before someone approached us to get us a table but not unreasonable wait. We got there at about 5:30 PM on a Saturday and within the hour the dinner crowd started filtering into the place. It's a come as you are place in a relaxed atmosphere. Looks like they had their grand opening back in April.<br><br>I'll get to the nuts and bolts. Food was just not there. I came in with my two daughters 12/15 and my wife. They suggested this star rating after trying several dishes including: gator balls, the butcher plate (a good idea with four meats on it to try a bit of several types), a bowl of chili, Mac and cheese partner/side, and the German style potato salad, and a non-alcoholic lemonade sipper which my daughter split.<br><br>Gator balls were quite mushy and didn't really make us want to finish. Came with a side of ranch and well let's just say I wouldn't order it again. Same goes for the German style potato salad. With a last name like Shaver, my father's side of the family are all German so I have been exposed to it for a while. If you want to try something different you might like it as it won't be like either mustard or mayonnaise potato salads. The bowl of chili, well you can see in the photo what it looked like when it came out. Unfortunately the flavor followed suit. I would not order this again. Mac and cheese was ok by my girls.<br><br>The butcher plate I thought was a great idea since it came with four different meats and chance to taste several styles. We had brisket, turkey breast, pulled pork and black pepper sausage. It was ok but across the board salty and dry were the words du jour. The saving grace of this place allowed us to finish our meals. That's the barbecue sauce. Now that's something special and I'm sad to say that the meats needed it for sure this night. <br><br>I totally understand that smoking can have good days and bad days and if it's just myself I might stop in for a quick bite. This place likes to use pecan wood per some questions I asked. I just can't say that there was anything else besides the sauce that was super positive this night. However, a month in and I wish them well and hope they can dial it in. It's just right down the street from us so convenient, but right now there are other bbq places that have this placed "smoked" in my opinion. (I know terrible wordplay). But to be fair, I would stop in and buy that bbq sauce to use at home.<br><br>Pricing is probably a tad bit high for this quality of food we had but not unreasonable. Everything about this restaurant was great. The Butcher was the perfect order to test four of the meats and two of the sides. Brisket, Pulled Pork, Sausage and Turkey were perfectly smoked, moist and delicious! Onion Rings were some of the best I've had. Service was friendly and fast. The owner came by to check how our order was and after talking with him, I can't wait to go back and try the Crispy Smoked Wings and Pork Ribs! My wife and I tried Harold Dean Smokehouse this evening. I'm sorry to say we were very disappointed in the quality of the food. The quality of the brisket was like it leftover from a day or more, very dry and tough. The pulled pork made me questioned if it was made at the restaurant or if was premade and just heated up and served. The service was very fast and our server was professional. I was happy to see a new BBQ joint opened in Flower Mound. Sadly, the food was very subpar. I ordered the brisket sandwich. The brisket looked and tasted like a underseasoned roast from the oven. It was very disappointing. I noticed there were no sounds from the kitchen or any smells of smoked meat and etc. I am assuming the food was brought in from somewhere else and microwaved. The people were very nice and that makes it kinda hard to write a bad review. However, Im sorry to say, this was the worst BBQ joint I have visited in many years. Good smoke ring and a decent Black pepper season, but not much of a bark and next to no moisture. Pork ribs were a dry rub. Black pepper season was ok, but lacking. They were fall apart tender, but a bit over done for me. The house sauce was excellent, had a chipotle smoky flavor and paired well with the meat.
