It's ok. If you like bar food and a super chill place to hang, it's great. Food was good. I'd go back if I was just in the mood to hang

I've been going to the Hard Times since 1998. That's a long time. Good gluten-free muffins; the migas are usually good too and have long been my go-to order. Basically I always get breakfast food. I like the spiced coffee too -- strong. It's worth noting they offended a political group on 10/16 and now you've got people from Florida and Delano, MN, posting one-star reviews about how terrible the servers are. These people have never been there. There are no servers, my friends. You write your order on a piece of paper at the counter, pick up your food when they call your name, and bus your own dishes. The music is great. The bathroom is indeed a bit of a horror show sometimes, primarily because it's not well-ventilated. Bring cash. Eat a cardamom cookie if they've got one. Relax. More...

Hard Times is the best cafe in Minneapolis, hands down. The food is delicious, the prices are so fair, they have a nice tea collection, and the staff is warm and make you feel at home. They have board games and I’ve spent many afternoons studying here. This place is a true gem. More...

No meat, no credit cards and best of all, no MAGA’s. Their mushroom gravy is incredible and their pancakes can’t be beat. My family and I love Hard Times Cafe. And we vote

I have only been once and plan to go back more often. It is a drive for me though. The food was good. The people were super friendly (I was warned they may have an attitude as it is their thing- never got any attitude at all! ) The prices are amazing!! Everything I tried was great. A little bit of a wait time, but they make it as you order, so no biggie. I plan to take all 4 kids soon!! More...

I have well over 15 years of memories of coming here, and I know this place isn’t going anywhere so I’ll have plenty more ahead. I basically lived here after work when I started going to school again and this place is likely at least partially responsible for when I had a 4.0 GPA. And nothing beats being able to get REAL food in the middle of the night, vs having gut rot courtesy of fast food. Further, as an advocate for people experiencing homelessness, as well as for harm reduction, how community members are treated with compassion and how the worker owners actively work to stay up on how to care for the community - that is the main thing that keeps me coming back. Great tasting, quality and ethically sourced vegetarian and vegan fare, run by a collective worker owned crew since 1992. Great place to meet with friends or meet new ones . Diverse atmosphere. Punks, Africans, students, professors, old timers, straight up characters. The West Bank, Cedar Riverside is a storied, historic neighborhood run by local businesses, activists, and immigrants. I love Hard Times Cafe and all of the people who work here. I’ve been a customer for years and it is hands down the best cafe I’ve ever been to for many different reasons. I’ve eaten here when I need a cheap, filling meal. I’ve probably spent literal days in the back high top tables drinking coffee and reading. Not only do they have incredible, affordable, flavorful vegan/vegetarian food and the best and biggest muffins in the city, this is a place where I can FEEL SAFE. We need more spaces like this in Minneapolis, and in the world in general. Solidarity always. More...
