Awful customer service and experience. This company has no business being in business.

We adopted a dog last week and during the first night noticed symptoms of pneumonia. Brought him to the ER and they confirmed he had pneumonia and took a few days for other tests results to come back, but they confirmed he has distemper too. When my wife brought her concerns to Happy Tails they called from an unknown phone number and left a voicemail blaming us for him “getting into something” because he was healthy when he came into our care. Our dog having distemper is now a huge risk for other dogs who he came into contact with at the rescue. We also found paint in his fur, so I doubt they even have him a proper examination before having him neutered. We don’t even trust that he was give a distemper vaccine in their care. We’ve seen other reviews like ours too, and see that Happy Tails has a F rating with the BBB. If they truly cared about the dogs they rescued, they would do more upfront healthcare and be honest with families who want to adopt these dogs. I’m glad our dog is out of their care and can live his remaining days in our loving home with access to any medical care he needs. More...

Happy Tails Rescue is Unreliable business . They are unwilling to work with you . They sell dogs With parvo and distemper. The puppy we got Kooky which we named Ruger was Adopted on March 31st and died on Thursday the April 22nd from the diseases. When we email them we got no Apology and not there problem attitude . We asked them to call us and never did once .He was neutered at 1 or 2 months old which is to young to do that. Given pain pills which I never heard of . He’s never been around other animals in our care cause we didn’t want him to be to Active after the surgery. We spent 3,000 in vet and adoption fees that the refuse to pay back .Hey happy tails why don’t you check the animals you sell before Adopting them out .. we are going spreading the news about your unreliable and unwilling to work business . . The foster person we picked puppy up from having issues too More...

*BEWARE* This is organization has 0 concern with providing accurate information for animals for adoption. After the fact you are attached to an animal that you adopted as healthy new companion to find this pet has behavioral issues and chronic ongoing medical needs that can be transmitted to any existing pets in your home endangering them. Shocked to find that new pet has parasites they claimed treated for, what was the high adoption fee for if not for a vetted pet? Heartbreaking for new owners and disgusting that this organization knowingly does this to trusting people who want to adopt vs shop for a new pet who don’t anticipate $300+ in vet bills 2 weeks after adoption and the fees paid to Happy Tails. I hope to save someone else from the financial and emotional strain that Happy Tails has caused to others. More...

Terrible experience. Really wish I would’ve read the reviews before adopting through Happy Tails. Although I do love the puppy I adopted, I have spent a fortune already on vets bills after having him less than a month. When going to look at the puppies I was told they had ringworm but were being treated. Once I decided on the puppy I wanted I was told he was the only puppy that did not have the ringworm. Because of how contagious this disease is and the small and terrible conditions these puppies were living in, they should have assumed all puppies had it. Go figure the night I brought him home I found he had multiple patches of ringworm. Now almost $700 later I am still dealing with this chronic disease. I reached out to happy tails multiple times for an explanation and never heard back. The conditions of the foster home were so disgusting, pee and feces all over the floor and there was 2 litters of puppies almost 15 in total in this very small space. Ultimately I am glad I got him out of those horrible conditions but I am completely disgusted by the treatment and lack of concern by this adoption agency. There are so many good agencies out there and I really wish I would’ve done my research. More...

We adopted Zoe (fka Jazzy) about 2.5 years ago from HTR and it was such an easy process! We applied for her and got an email a few days later saying we could meet her the coming weekend at one of their adoption events. We met her an instantly fell in love with her spunky personality and decided we needed to adopt her. The staff are friendly and made the process super easy, letting us know beforehand what we needed to bring, what was required before adoption, fees, etc. 2.5 years later, we still get compliments about her and people ask where we adopted her from and we can’t recommend HTR enough! We were looking to adopt a dog. We went to happy tails rescue and they had a very strict vetting process. I felt like they really wanted to place the dogs in good homes. They even asked for a video tour of our home and stated we needed a fenced in yard. They make sure the dogs are spade or neutered and are not younger than 8 weeks old before they are adopted out. We adopted our sweet poochie, from Happy Tails Rescue, in January 2018. As they should, they vetted us thoroughly, requiring an online application that included references, and a video of our home. You must also agree to take your dog to at least one training class. When we found the puppy that piqued our interest, we arranged a meeting with Jenny, the foster mom. There were three puppies in this rescued litter, and they were all healthy in appearance and energetic. After meeting them, we ended up selecting the sibling of the one we were initially were drawn to. As with all of our other dogs, we immediately took Harper to our personal vet, for a wellness check. She did have some parasites, which is not unusual, and she received the necessary treatment. Beyond that, she was a healthy puppy. As required, we did take her to a training class, even though we are very experienced dog owners. It’s important to remember, that even at home, training is a commitment that you need to continue working on. You are responsible to make sure that your pet is a good citizen…..they need to understand the rules, to be socialized, and to be loved. Harper is now almost two years old, and we couldn’t be happier with our choice. She’s a little sister to a big German Shepherd. She is a loving, happy, well-adjusted social butterfly. A big thank you to those who rescue, and to those who foster until a forever home can be found. More...

If you're not sure where to adopt a pet, definitely start with happy tails. I could not recommend this shelter enough. This was my first time adopting a dog, and I have to say from all the horror stories I've heard, the whole adoption process was a breeze and the staff was incredibly helpful and supportive. One distinguishing factor form this shelter that I love is how they only foster their animals, so my 3 month old puppy was already potty trained and crate trained by the foster mom. My parents have had many dogs growing up, and this is the first rescue they have experienced, and they said they would recommend this shelter to everyone because Dexter is truly the biggest personality, most well-behaved dog my whole family has ever experienced! The process of adopting our pup from Happy Tails went well! We actually went to the Open Adoption event with a plan to meet a dog, but ended up meeting a chunky 5 month old pup that stole our hearts and came home with us that day! The process was easy, but we did have to show proof of purchase of puppy classes and photos of our home so it is important to be prepared! I did do 4/5 stars because I had her in the vet just 2 days after her adoption and she tested positive for Giardia which was never mentioned when we adopted her.. other than that things have gone well and she's a happy, healthy, almost 1 year old! I decided it was time to adopt my first dog and I was originally looking at the humane society in golden valley. I was referred to Happy Tails by a friend and was hesitant once I saw the application process/requirements (as I feel like most people are). However, when I scrolled through the available rescues, I saw a puppy I was very interested and decided to give it a go. The application only took me 15 minutes to fill out and the foster family contacted me within 2 hours. I could have gone that day to meet him but I was unavailable...I set up a time for 2 days out and took home my new friend that day! I understand that the application, home video and required training enrollment seems like a lot but they are simply trying to give the animals the best home they can...and I see that as a benefit of Happy Tails! And there is nothing wrong with ensuring your pet is well trained (as well as yourself if you're new to owning an animal); the training they offer is very reasonably priced compared to others. We have adopted two dogs now from Happy Tails. They are commendable in that they are rescuing animals from dire situations and that they want to save as many as possible. While we knew there would be some health issues to tend to early in the adoption process, we are both well versed in rescue pups (all of our dogs have been), after several months of TLC with both boys, they are doing fantastic today! Our first adoption, Bjorn, came just a week after a loss of our 14 year old rescue, Lars. Bjorn was barely two months and in need of a healthy home. He thrived once he came home. When he was 18 months we rescued Elvis, who was a different type of rescue. He had been feral and was already somewhere near 6 months. He had zero human contact as he wouldn't let humans close. While the first few days with us were difficult, he was cuddled up to me after that. Both boys are now best buddies and are healthy and happy. We know they could have had far worse outcomes had they not been rescued from the saddest place on Earth. We were fully prepared to deal with whatever came with them, and we knew we had to act fast as soon as we applied for either one. We can't imagine life without our boys! More...

I adopted my second dog (Old English Sheepdog) from HTR in April of 2019. The process was just as thorough and even more simple and sophisticated. Their website is easy to look at and filter dogs. Their facility in Fridley is really nice and their trainers and foster parents are GREAT! The care and love for the animals is evident. They are committed to finder the animal it's right home, not just wanting to get them out the door. HTR does a great job of bringing in lots of different breeds of dogs too where other shelters primarily just have lab or terrier mixes. We went and met her that Saturday. We knew we wanted her right away. We filed all the paperwork, paid, and set up her pick up on Monday. Everything moved very quickly (shockingly quick ) and everyone was super nice. We have had Harley for a little over 2 months now and she is a perfect fit for our fur family. It was an adjustment don't get me wrong. It took a good month for her to adjust, for her fur siblings to adjust, and for us to create a routine with her in it. If you are thinking of adopting it's going to take time for EVERYONE to adjust and to like each other. It's rough some days and your going to think about bailing but once the dust settles it is so worth it all! After reading some of the other reviews my best suggestion is read EVERYTHING you sign through Happy Tails. For everything they do for the animal community they have to have strict rules to protect themselves and the money they use to save more animals! Highly recommend Petco's training program. It was very reasonable and money well spent. I read the prior reviews and I encourage you to read them as well and make your own judgements. When you adopt a rescue, you have to be ready for anything. The dog may have been cat/dog/child friendly in the fosters home, but may not be in your home. They clearly state on their website that the breeds are a best GUESS. Some of the dogs, like mine, come from Indian reservations where they tend to be 4+ different breeds. $400+ for a dog that comes altered, microchipped, heartwormed, flea/tick, shots, and transportation, that's a fair price. Once again, make your own judgements. If they have an animal that interests you, go visit it and see how it feels. Trust your gut. More...
