Hanks Catering

Came here for dinner because we heard great things. We ordered the carnitas nachos, the sampler with ribs and the combo. The pork on the nachos and on the sampler were the star! It's the reason I'm giving this place three stars. The toppings on the nachos were great- in addition to the pulled pork it came with tomatoes, guacamole, cheese and black beans, but the chips were soft and borderline stale. Besides the chips, I think the nachos were pretty good. Now, let me preface this by saying that I know I'm no pit master but I'm pretty sure that the ribs shouldn't taste like lighter fluid/gas. The ribs were also dry and over cooked. The food is supposed to be smoked so smoky flavor is fine but not gas. The fries and the sweet potato fries were pretty good. We arrived at peak time with a party of 9 and they were very accommodating. We sat on the patio while waiting and had great service. Everyone in the party enjoyed there meal and had a great time. Visited during our trip to Massanutten. Wanted to give this place a try because it had so many reviews. What a disappointment. We got our order to go: bbq sampler platter with mac and cheese and 3 pieces southern fried catfish with coleslaw and cornbread.What we actually received: flavorless meat served with overcooked mac and cheese, 2.5 pieces of fried catfish, NO coleslaw, and super dry cornbread.  My husband asked for sauce when he picked up the order and the person handling our order assured us there were some already packed in the stapled to-go bag. Turns out they only gave us one small container of bbq sauce. Was really taken back as to how bad the service was. Arrived at Hanks, was immediately taken to a table, wasn't offered drinks or water. As we waited 10 minutes, another couple arrived and were taken to their table. A waitress bypassed us and immediately went to their table. My husband & I came here on a whim. He loves BBQ so of course he had to find a bbq joint. Once pulling in the parking lot, it was full and they had an overflow. So that was a good sign, parking lot full, gotta be good eats. Once entering we were seated promptly. Looking over the menu, we waited....waited.....waited. Finally the waitress acknowledge us. She took our drink order and we ordered an appetizer. Well we waited....waited....our waitress was to occupied with other tables talking about life and forgot our drinks and appetizer. She finally acknowledge us again and came over and said oh I forgot about your drinks and appetizer. Lawd mercy!!! Well she finally brought our drinks and appetizer. We ordered the Nachos Carnitas for an appetizer, BIG HUGE disappointment! The chips tasted stale, hardly any carnitas, I'm serious huge disappointment! We ordered our dinners which we both got Sample dinner which include ribs, pull pork, and brisket. Hubs got fried and I got green beans with ham. Let's talk about the meat, the meat had ZERO flavor, lukewarm if that, my pulled pork consisted of mostly fat meat, the ribs has a rub on them which made them taste better. That was really the only edible meat. The brisket was terrible also. Hubs fries were cold and soggy. My beans were can beans with no flavor and tasted like they just dumped them from the can into a bowl. We both left over half of our plates, it was terrible. $130 for 4 people and 2 had burgers. Nothing had flavor or was worth paying for. The descriptions didn't match the flavor, at all. The pork BBQ was dry and zero smoke flavor. The burgers were flavorless and half wasted. The tuna special was also half wasted and the only flavor was tons of raw red onion in the pineapple salsa. After hearing ... not so desirable things... about the food on the property @ Massanutten, we decided to venture to Hank's, as my daughter was demanding macaroni and cheese The restaurant is nicely decorated and the servers were friendly. I ordered the smokehouse special. The fried catfish was fine, and the ribs were very good. My husband ordered grilled shrimp and liked it, but the brisket was a bit dry. My daughter loved her macaroni and cheese. For our sides, I had grits and my husband had the "pickles and onions," which were cucumbers. Overpriced, no flavor! There was 4 people in our party and nothing had any flavor.  The descriptions sound good but the dishes didn't reflect that.  The only thing we enjoyed were the burnt ends app. My husband ordered a bloody Mary that had a rib stuck down in it. It tasted like watered down tomato juice and ended up being $15 on the bill.  Our dinner was $130.00 and we left wishing we had just sent everything back because it was highly disappointing and definitely not worth the cost we paid.  We won't return! Delicious food and friendly service in a super casual, down home, southern atmosphere. We started by sharing the burnt ends and grits. .. amazing flavor and texture.  I had the house specialty hand cut Texas BBQ brisket which was moist and flavorful. Hubby had the ribs and said they were flavorful too.  We watched the game and had a good time. I will be back.I acknowledge the review that said they had to ask for condiments multiple times. This is just a small neighborhood place with a few ladies running around to serve, doing the best they can, and doing it with a smile. This is the only bbq place I have found that I can eat to my hearts desire and not have heartburn! Currently 6.5 months pregnant, so things either don’t taste that great or they don’t sit great. Hanks hanks hank... such an iconic name. No one is mis hearing you when you bring up "hanks". The only complain about this restaurant is there isn't a single negative. It's good food good service and they have very nice merchandise. I also really enjoy all of the different sauces. They add something to the feel that makes it almost authentic. We placed an order, today, 2/13/2022 for the following: Chicken Quesadilla, minus the chicken, but asked for extra Pico, and a bbq sandwich with collard greens. Well I didn't get the extra pico, which is okay......However, when my husband was eating his collard greens, he pulled something out of his mouth and it was a piece of paper with a bar code number on it. This was mixed in with his collard greens. So I called Hank's and spoke with the manager. They were semi apologetic, and said they would refund the cost of the Collard Greens. I was like: Are you kidding me. How about refunding the whole damn dinner amount of $25.00. They should have been all over themselves trying to make this right. It's so disgusting to find a foreign object in your food. Makes you wondering what else is in it. Not to mention that I got charged full price on my Chicken Quesadilla, minus the chicken, but they couldn't give me an extra pico. Wasn’t a knock out…brisket and catfish were just ok, not tons of flavor, didn’t get bread like used to, menu was much reduced. After a long drive to Shenandoah...this was our spot for lunch before tackling the first day in the park. It was well worth it. The barbecue smell filled the whole place, the food and drinks were great...especially their Bloody Mary. Service was great...and they helped me pick out some rubs and sauces to take home with me. Our experience at Hank's was wonderful. We both had the grilled Salmon on a salad, cornbread, and local wine. It was very delicious. We did try the barbecue sauces with our salmon too and they were also very good. The cornbread is awesome and that alone would have been worth the trip for me!Our server was very attentive and friendly. The entire staff there is inviting.I highly recommend giving Hanks a try! My wife and I dined here while celebrating an anniversary weekend at Massanutten Resort. We mainly visited Hank's because of the discount offered by showing your receipt from the Thunderbird Cafe. They are owned by the same people and have a reciprocating discount offer when you show your receipt.The food wasn't really anything all that special and the service was mediocre, at best. I think we had to ask for a condiment 2 or 3 times before it was brought to us.The outdoor seating area was very nice.Check this place out if you're in a pinch, but don't otherwise go out of your way. My friend and I took a jaunt down to Shenandoah Valley and discovered this spot.  Funny thing is, my friend didn't want to check it out, based off highway signage. Huh?  I talked her into considering a visit based off of Yelp reviews, instead. We have Yelp to thank, because everything we ordered was delicious! I would leave a 0 if i could. Went for brunch because the other local cafes and spots were packed. All of the food was dry, unseasoned and honestly a little high in price for what it was. Would NOT recommend this. I'd go to a chain like ihop first. Got the chicken and waffles, it was a cornbread waffle and chicken thighs. My wife and I were at a nearby winery and wanted dinner. We saw that we could bring our dog to the patio. When we got there we were told we could only order takeout to eat on the patio because they didn't have a waitress for the patio. The girl who took our order brought our dog water and brought our takeout containers to us.
