Ok. So this is our third visit to Hakka Kitchen. I tried to remember to take pictures BEFORE we started eating. I tried. This time, we tried the award winning vegan chili and it did not disappoint. We added vegan meatballs, which were great! We ordered the scallion pancakes again with the cucumber salad and the wild mushroom rice. This time we took an order home to snack on tomorrow. Annie also makes the best to go bags. They have their own handles! More...

I'm conflicted. I want to give them 4 stars but I just can't.Vegan chilli: B, it's a decent chilli with a spice level of 2 on a 5 point scale. Too much tomoato sauce and not enough of those earthy spices like cumin and oregano.Wild mushroom rice: C, this was a clear miss for me. Lots of mushrooms, cashews and rice, but very, very bland. But, it's enough food to feed 2 women.I appreciate the concept of this place, but they need to revise the taste of their dishes. More...

I had dinner at Hakka kitchen a few weeks ago following a Yelp event. A fellow yelper and I ordered cucumber and red onion salad, the Vietnamese Hakka banh mi, AKA tofu sandwich, and peanut pancakes for dessert. I also ordered a white sangria.Red onions are my favorite. Add some cucumber and seasoning and spices, so delicious! And I can honestly tell you when I ate the tofu sandwich I could not tell I wasn't eating meat. The tofu is made in-house and was delicious. And I am not typically a tofu eater. But you have to be open to trying new things in order to find new things to love. The peanut pancakes were different but tasty. They had a sweet flavor with a firm texture. And don't sleep on the white sangria, so light and refreshing you will forget there is alcohol in the drink lol.If you are looking for a healthy food option, excellent customer service and an owner who cares about her menu items and preserving the Hakka culture, I suggest you stop by soon and check out this spot. Came for a yelp event. I'm glad I was able to try this place. Food is plant based but even a meat eater wouldn't miss the meat. Food has a lot of flavor. The owner explained their back story and I appreciate all that goes into the preparation of the food to make it taste more than just like vegetables or tofu. The food is satisfying and I plan to return to try other dishes. More...

I was introduced to Hakka thanks to a Yelp event and opted to stay and enjoy more of what I had sampled! John was able to join us after work and I was already sipping on my white Sangria (omg- maybe the best white Sangria I have ever had) and had placed an order for the chicken dumplings. This restaurant has mainly plant based dishes and they make their own tofu- so bring on the vegans! I however am not vegan, and don't worry- you can have your chicken or fish here too. The owner is simply a delight and has put her own twist on the menu. Thanks to Vanessa and Michelle I even tried their Peanut Pancakes- made with rice and tofu (I think). It was dense in texture- not my taste, but the flavor was delicious with the maple syrup. John teased he was happy he got to try it and that he would never had ordered that for himself. I hope to return soon for a tea time with friends. They have a gorgeous tea room, wonderful energy! More...

First time here tonight. I came because of a Yelp event. It was nice to hear the Hakka story and despite being a meat eater, I was pleasantly surprised that I did not miss the meat at all. The dumplings, vegan sausage, and scallion pancakes were delicious and full of flavor. The cocktails were nice and refreshing as well. We will definitely return to try other dishes and we look forward to reserving a tea ceremony there as well. More...

First of all, VERY nice atmosphere and decor. Quite a surprise considering the nook it inhabits in the Imaging strip mall on Beach. Menu is pleasant, descriptive and options clearly presented. Unfortunately, that's where the pleasantries ended. The food is advertised vegan and organic which from the food we ordered must mean thick and chewy. The flavors don't meet the expectations of how the food looks, and if you've eaten any of these dishes at a conventional Dim Sum or decent Cantonese restaurant, you'll be sorely disappointed. Bravo for trying a concept, again, aesthetically, it's all very pleasing. But if you're looking for a fresh take on some familiar Asian favorites, take a hard pass. More...

An organic restaurant, and one that is not strictly vegetarian, but basically starts from the perspective of everything vegetarian and gives a couple of options for paying to add both vegetarian and non-vegetarian items to a dish. Which is fine by me. Their menu is enormously detailed in explaining the context for each dish, and the roughly 10-ish girl at the table across from me was having the time of her life reading it out loud. I struggled with analysis paralysis, but got some dumplings with tofu and the entree they pushed the hardest: vegan chili. Those might have been the best dumplings I ever had. They were seared on the outside, and the tofu on the inside (a house-made brand that is apparently available in local stores) was ground and delightfully flavored. It was the kind of thing where every bite became an exercise in trying to get all the sesame seeds and bits of green onion, and the choice between eating the dumpling as-is or dipping in sauce seemed of monumental importance despite the fact that either option was, in fact, delicious. The vegan chili was robust in flavor, and had some more of that ground tofu.I will note that I was a bit miffed that I asked for a hot tea, assuming that I would get a single serving, but instead received (and was charged for) a pot. Additionally, it wasn't clear to me that the choice of brown or white rice would result in an extra charge for the former. At least they didn't charge me for a second helping of hot water for my tea (which one steeps by timing it with an included hourglass), at which point I would have had a problem. I might well have voluntarily paid for all these charges, but clarity is important. Still, I err on the side of reflecting the quality of food in my reviews, and as good as it was, I think it quite possible that if I went back and ordered differently, I might find something even better. Super cute vibe inside. The day my friend and I went the service was pretty subpar - we were told to grab a table anywhere and then it took like 15 minutes to just get a menu and it wasn't super busy. Luckily my friend and I know how to have good conversation to pass the time. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing on the menu, which I have a knack of doing - the Vegan Mango Ceviche - but I thought it was just ok for the price point. I ended up also getting a side of brown rice and that made it feel more like a meal, but I defintiely would have walked out hungry if I didnt. The combined flavor of the fruits/veggies was tasty, but nothing to write home about imo.My friend also ordered a tea, and they waitress didn't take the time to explain that you should get it traditionally, and since it was out first time we didn't know, so they brought out just a cup of tea (like in a glass water cup) and still charged what seemed like for the whole kettle, which was crazy. If they didn't that was an expensive cup of tea.Overall, I'm glad we tried it, but there are some things they could improve upon. I wouldn't rush back here, but may give it another shot if we were in the area. More...

Vegan food is hard to come by, much less on the east coast's south. I panned my way through many of search query for vegan food in the Jax area & nary a vegan biz be found. They were either closed or they weren't really "heart into it" vegan. Then in the 11th hour when all hope would be lost, I hit on this one with an hour or so left to be open; we bee lined there. We had a stumble as I don't like oil in my food period, not even my food looking at oil. The server assured me that anything I ordered could be oil free but then the dumplings came & I could not even touch them they had so much oil on them. Another food server said that the order for oil free was probably forgotten but assured me that they could be steamed & oil free. Anyway, the sweet potato soup & the Vietnamese tofu sandwich were oil free and they were good!. My brother that accompanied me ordered the chili & it was good as well as oil free. Just a foot note, people in this part of the country love their food smothered in oil and is their custom to fry their "foods" in it. It explains a lot but Hakka Kitchen is an outlier from typical cuisine of this region. The food is tasty, service slow but it is a comfortable spacious setting with plenty of ventilation. More...

So I kinda thought this last time, but the entrance to this restaurant is misleading. The turn off Beach that looks like it should lead into this joint is a weird residential backroad that doesn't connect. Instead, it's the earlier turn that leads to the back of Planet Fitness. The left turn going west also runs into the backroad. If you miss it, it's quite annoying to loop back around, especially with the afternoon traffic. Anyways, since they're now Hakka Kitchen, I've decided to check this out again.I love mushrooms. I ordered the scallion pancakes with mushrooms and onions on top. I also ordered the wild mushroom rice bowl. For the pancakes, the mushrooms and onions on top were heavenly. They had the right amount of stir fried flavor, with onions being sautéed not too much, not too little. Unfortunately, I didn't quite agree with the texture of the pancakes themselves. Scallion pancakes are supposed to be a little chewy, but I found these to be too doughy and chewy. I prefer my scallion pancakes to be softer and fluffier and flakier. It should be soft where it's not crispy and crispy where it's not soft. I also wasn't a fan of their pinkish sauce for this, kinda like a yum-yum sauce. I like this kind of sauce, but I don't think it fits a scallion pancake. I would've preferred something like a chili-ginger or a soy sauce base instead. Next, for the rice bowl, I enjoyed this mushroom rice bowl much more than the chicken rice bowl I had here last time. Although, that also speaks to the weak umami of the chicken from last time........ In this case, the mushroom comes out in full force. As a vegan rice bowl, this is a very satisfying dish. The nuts and onion also pair nicely. However, I think the real heavy lifter is the pesto. It adds much needed depth to the flavor and contrasts all the other contents. Unfortunately, like with the scallion pancake, I didn't really enjoy the rice. For white rice, it was surprisingly hard and not sticky. You can certainly make that kind of texture work, but this one doesn't sit right with me. The nuts only make it worse. Again, the pesto is what tries to counter it, but it's not quite enough. About a third of the way through the rice bowl, I wanted more flavor and asked for something spicy. They gave me a chili oil mix that was pretty good. I think, to some extent, my taste buds just don't agree with the taste buds of the chefs here. Imho, the best thing about this place is probably the wine and organic tea list. They have oolong, pu'er, hibiscus, etc. A decent choice if you're looking for a vegan/organic joint. More...
