I was invited to come in for a hair treatment/service by a member of their marketing team and had made an appointment for 2pm. Imagine my surprise when I arrive at 2pm and end up waiting a good 30 minutes before I got to meet my stylist - the long wait was the only negative part of my entire experience hence the loss of a star. Jojo was my stylist and boy did she do an amazing job!! I hadn't cut my hair in over 1.5 years since I got balayage done, so not only was my hair long but the ends were damaged. Jojo talked me through what she would do and how the haircut style (long layers with side swept bangs) would frame my face and how she would be getting rid of almost all the colored parts so my hair would go back to looking healthy. A little over an hour later my hair was looking so healthy and renewed I almost didn't recognize it! Jojo really took her time when cutting my hair and made sure every detail was perfect!! Hair Philosophy has won my heart and here's why. Hair appointments are my worst nightmare. I hate the wait, the wash, the dry, the cut, the blow. Basically all of it. Hair Philosophy really took that hate and turned it into love. I walked in and was greeted by two very pleasant women who escorted me to the back, offered me a drink and had Jojo my hair dresser come over to me within seconds. I discussed with Jojo the type of cut I was looking for, showed her some pictures and we got the ball rolling. If I tell you this experience was so smooth I didn't see time going by I would not be lying. Jojo was an absolute pleasure to work with. She was friendly upbeat and just made the entire experience so wonderful. My haircut came out magnificent. Decided to do another hair color change to spice up my look and Hair Philosophy came and along and did just that as I went from blonde to dark red! After walking in to the salon, my coat and bag was checked in and I met my stylist, Jojo. Jojo took me to my seat and noticed the salon was bright and spacious. First was a consultation asking what I wanted to do with my hair and because I a bit unsure of the color, Jojo showed me hair color samples and ended up choosing one. After that, she asked if I had ever had my scalp examined and I'm like never. She busts out a hand size machine while I'm holding a phone and brings it to my scalp and I see all my hair follicles! There was oil buildup (eww haha) and slight redness so before getting the color applied, she does a scalp treatment so that my head doesn't get agitated.Next is my color and it's applied, I wait, I wash, I talk with Jojo (because getting your hair done is almost like a therapy session) and see my new hair and it's more dark brown than red. Oh no! Jojo sees my face of indifference and so asks if I want more red. We add more red and another half hour later and bam! A red head is born. Jojo also applies a scalp serum that is cool to my head to make my scalp nice and healthy. omg i'm so impressed with this place! the employees were so nice & helpful with what i was needing and answered all my questions honestly. i came in with dark brown hair (almost black) and wanted to bleach it to prepare my hair for a pink. i didn't know how light it would get but after 4 1/2 hours it turned out so good!! we tested a strand before & joy lin (my stylist) and i decided to just go for it & see what happened. i'm so happy with how it turned out & how healthy my hair was even after all of that. will 100% be coming back More...

I was invited to try out a treatment/cut at Hair Philosophy, and one thing I can certainly tell you is that...they really know hair. Like really. And that certainly applied to Jojo, the staff member taking care of me. First, I was shown what type of scalp type I had via a scalp camera and app. That was pretty neat. They then tailor a treatment based on the type of scalp condition you had, with various lotions and products, all very meticulously applied - again, they are clearly professionals that know what their doing. After about an hour various products and subsequently rinsing, I'll admit my scalp was feeling mighty fine.And next up was the actual haircut. Again, very meticulous. I mean, I'm used to the more 'old school' NYC barbershops and try and churn you out as quick as possible so they can get the next guy in the chair. Not here. They make sure they get the job done right, and that's exactly what Jojo did. No quick 'let me buzz you down to length then bust out my shears for a couple snips,' every cut careful and deliberate. I was invited by their marketing team to come in for a hair treatment but they didn't seem to have my 11AM appointment. I had to wait a bit while they sorted this out but I was offered drinks and snacks while I waited. The salon was very clean and modern and the staff were all very friendly. There also weren't many customers while I was there which made the experience very peaceful and relaxing.It was my first time doing a scalp treatment and their technology is quite impressive. I was able to see the condition of my scalp while the hairdresser explained to me what I was looking at on the handheld device. Turns out I had a bit of bleeding from scratching my head and a bit of dandruff that I didn't know about. After the diagnosis, he determined that the best fit for me was to do the dry scalp treatment. He was very transparent the whole time and explained everything he was doing and what purpose it served.After the diagnosis, was the exfoliation process which was left on for 15 minutes. Then the shampoo, scalp mask treatment, metabolic massage, wash and rinse, conditioning with nutrient serum and ended with a styling. He also showed me what my scalped looked like after the treatment with the same device we used earlier. I was able to see a bit of improvement but honestly it didn't look very different.Overall, I thought this experience was pretty cool and felt like a much needed pamper session but I am not sure I am convinced of how effective it really is. The scalp treatment=the ultimate self care session! Eian worked with me throughout this scalp session and it was an amazing experience. He was really kind, hospitable, and informative throughout the session!The scalp treatment is an 8 part normalizing treatment for all skin types, but they have different products to target different issues (oily hair types, dry, sensitive, etc). It starts with a really cool microscopic camera that takes porous photos of your scalp/follicles to determine your scalp health. Besides the occasional itchy patches, I thought I had a relatively healthy head, but the examination showed I could use a little extra work.The treatment also includes an exfoliation, shampooing, a mask, and ends with a soothing airbrushed serum. It was really cool to see the technology that goes into this + the detailed care Eian gave. He mentioned that scalp treatments are super popular in Asia and are usually performed once a month. I'm excited to come back soon and see how my skin health improves over time.The salon itself is stylish and spacious. Seems they're pretty popular for coloring and haircuts (duh) too! (This review is exclusively for their scalp treatment as I did not get a haircut.)This was the first time I've ever been to Hair Philosophy and I will say that my first impression of the place was extremely spacious and updated! There was great lighting super easy to find. I worked with JoJo and she was super kind right off the bat. She explained to me the process and what we would be doing. Every step of the way she was respectful and payed attention to doing everything she could to help me feel comfortable. Although she was very busy, she always made sure to come back to me and was always smiling. I will say that smiling while working will always make a significant difference. I got the scalp treatment this visit. It was a pretty long process, I went in at 1pm and finished at around 2:30pm which is about a 90min session. In the beginning she took a look at my scalp with a microscopic tool (super innovative) that connected to a phone via Bluetooth and I got my first close up look at my scalp and I was surprised to find out what type of scalp I had (it also felt weird look at my scalp that closely). In short the process was to exfoliate, shampoo and rinse, hydrate, rinse, masking "lotion", dry, and style. As a guy, I've never done such a process for my hair so I didn't really know what do expect. At the end of it all, I must say... ITS TOTALLY WORTH IT.Although it may not look super busy, they go by appointment only so make sure your make the appointment through their website, yelp, or phone number. I left the place feeling relaxed and with my head feeling so calm. I will say that their prices are a little high compared to what I'm used to but it's NY and you're paying for the services, product, and customer experience. If you've known me for a while, you might be aware that I cut my hair about once a year (basically when ponytails start giving me headaches, which I like to try to time with the seasons as I like to use my hair as a natural scarf in the winter). I've also had roughly the same hairstyle since junior high... Twas time for a change!I was coming in from New Brunswick, but on that particular day, the train got delayed by half an hour, so by the time I got through the subway and powerwalked my way to Hair Philosophy, I was a total mess (you can check the blog for the before photo..).The staff greeted me when I came in and offered me water--Nico was my stylist! He offered me some hot (but thankfully not burn-your-tongue-hot) green tea, which was perfect for the drearily grey day we were having."What are you looking to do with your hair and how much upkeep do you want to have to do?""...Lowest of the low." (In terms of maintenance. Old habits die hard.)Nico's suggestions:-Scalp treatment-Rounding out the v-cut I had as those tend to be damaging to hair longevity-Adding face-framing layers so it'd fit into a high ponytail but would automatically frame my face in a low ponytailHe was great about explaining everything he was doing, and also gave me a bunch of great suggestions for cool restaurants to check out nearby + lots of great hair health tips!The scalp treatment started off with a scalp analysis where he put a scope to my scalp to analyze whether it was healthy, dry, oily, or sensitive, and if it had any dry/oily/sensitive pore blockage. (Mine was dry + sensitive.) The scalp photos look a little terrifying, so I dumped them on the blog but not here.The treatment was a 3-part process! He painted exfoliating gel in, gave me a scalp massage, and left the gel to chill there for 10 minutes. After that, he added hydrating gel, repeated the process, and rinsed that out before applying the anti-sensitive hair serum. The whole process was super relaxing, and the serum had a really pleasant cooling sensation. My hair felt lighter and the best word I can use to describe how my scalp felt = clarified!Nico also gave me a mini blow drying lesson, and when he heard that I was heading off to a reunion dinner with my friends from residency, he fancied up my hair and the curls actually held for a pretty long while(!!!). (For reference, I usually have to braid, hairspray, sleep in braids, and hairspray some more for my hair to hold any semblance of a curl.)I was super happy with the results! I came in for my first scalp treatment and it was such a cool experience! The whole process took about an hour and half. There's also a snack bar for customers!Yi took really good care of me all throughout. He started off with a consultation to determine what scalp type I have. We went over a pamphlet that described the different scalp types. He used a scanning device that I was able to follow along with on his phone. It was so crazy to see what my scalp looked like! I have dyed hair so I expected my scalp to be on the dry side but turns out I'm more combination sensitive, so we went with the sensitive scalp treatment. Next he put in an exfoliant and let that sit for a bit. After, he shampooed my hair. He even put in something for the texture of my hair since it's colored (so kind!!). Then he put in the scalp mask treatment and let it sit for about 15 minutes. He would do some scalp massages throughout as well. After rinsing everything off, the last step was the nutrient serum which had a very cooling sensation. Veryy cool!! Lastly, he blow dried my hair and added some hair oil to finish it off. Sam is my hair person, I will follow him until I can physically no longer stalk him. Growing up I had one hair cutter, Kerry. My mom took herself and her kids to Kerry no matter which salon Kerry moved to. Which says a lot about my mother, she won't go anywhere longer than a five minute car ride. She has pretty much all of her home essential items delivered, mostly from Walmart. My mother taught me to value your hair Person, and to not trust any other hair cutter other than your own. I followed Kerry after moving out of my mom's, but it became too much to do and for about almost three years I yearned and searched for my hair person. I went to several stylists, never getting a bad haircut, just not the best. Sam has always given me the best. Sam has my complete trust and loyalty. This review (my first ever!) is very long overdue but necessary to give Rin Lin the major credit she deserves. I've been going to her for a couple of years now and she is the only stylist I will ever go to. Ever. Seriously. I've tried out a ton of different salons/stylists looking for the perfect ash blonde/brown balayage (my hair is naturally thick, dark and long) and none of them have ever compared. Her technique and care that goes into her work really shows in both the color and cut. This is my first review! Absolutely love this place!! I've lived in multiple areas around the city and hadn't found a go-to hair salon. I'm all for traveling out of the way to somewhere you enjoy going to. I was on the hunt for a hair salon and I found Hair Philosophy on Yelp. The reviews and photos gave me a good vibe so I decided to try it out after work. It's not near my job or my apartment, but I decided to try it out anyway. And I'm glad I did! Rain Wang IS THE STYLIST to go to!! He was super attentive to my hair. He took his time and did not rush through anything. This was my 2nd time going to him and I had a balayage + haircut done. He was super professional, attentive, and paid attention to skill/form/needs throughout this process. Please go to him for your hair needs. I cannot praise him more. Loved this place! Just got my first haircut at this location today and I loved it. I went to Hair Philosophy for the first time yesterday. It's clean, modern, very peaceful, and chill which was so nice. I was early but Sam, my stylist, got me right in. Everyone there is super nice and attentive. But the most important thing: Sam is amazing. I asked for a new style - something different - he totally listened and gave me an incredible new look. First off this salon is clean and spacious. They also serve drinks and snacks which is a nice touch.My stylist was Sam Bullen and he was super nice and accommodating. He was very sensitive to my needs and was always asking me how I would normally do my hair and what style I want. We started off with a scalp consultation using a special microscope (which is so cool as I've seen this used in YouTube with all the beauty gurus). It turns out my hair is a bit dry so from there he knew to use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner. They start off all clients with a consultation to determine what type of shampoo to use before a haircut /color. The shampoo smelled so good not to mention I got an awesome and relaxing head massage too from Sam. Next he used a toner. I've never used a toner before but apparently it's supposed to make your hair shiny and "tone" down your hair. I had previously dyed my hair with box dye and there were some patchy brown spots on my hair. Sam fixed it right away with the toner and made my hair more of a natural color. He then gave me a haircut , which is usually what I get, a trim with layers and bangs. Sam also curled my hair to give it that last finishing touch. Sam Bullen cut my hair and did an AMAZING job! I had let my hair grow out for an embarrassing amount of time, and Sam gave me the best bob for NYC fall. You can tell he is super dedicated to his craft and cares how you feel about your cut-not just what he thinks about it. The salon is super clean and relaxing and the hair wash/head massage was literally exactly what I needed right after work. My best hair salon experience by far.I came into Hair Philosophy for a balayage and was immediately greeted by the owners who introduced themselves and quickly explained that every service starts with a scalp analysis (so the whole service is tailored to your specific needs). I had never heard of a scalp analysis and was so intrigued by the whole process! With a small device they took magnified pictures of my scalp and we could clearly see that I was in need of hydration and they recommended some hydrating shampoos and hair masks. Nico, the salon manager, took excellent care of me and my hair and gave me the balayage of my dreams! All throughout the service he would explain the steps and give me secrets and advice on how to care for my mane. I found that type of customer care absolutely priceless! I had an amazing experience coming in to Hair Philosophy they have great customer service and I was easily able to schedule a time that worked well for me to come in during the week. I desperately needed to trim off my dead ends so I came in for a hair cut on a Tuesday afternoon I had my appointment at 2:40pm and when I arrived I was greeted by their friendly staff and my hair appointment was right on time and I did not have to wait around. They offer your complimentary snacks and drinks if you are interested, which I thought was a nice touch when you arrive somewhere. My hair stylists name was Sam and he started out by doing a test on my scalp with a fancy little gadget that I've never see before it was a small camera and I got to hold the end with the display and see my own scalp... which I thought was pretty cool. He then looked at a chart of all the different type of scalps from dry to oily and accessed what products would work best with my hair, which I thought was pretty innovative. He then asked how I would like my hair cute and did exactly what I asked and it came out amazing!! I had a color and women's cut with Joy and I am super pleased with the results! Joy and her assistant Anna took great care in making sure the cut was just right. She asked me a lot of questions, including inquiring about my hair color history and how that could affect my current color job. I also love that she took extra measure to make sure my face would not be stained by the dye - so many salons do not use barrier cream! I was very satisfied with my experience at Hair Philosophy and with Joy. Anna also did a great blow dry job. Hair Philosophy When I first walked in I was greeted right away by the receptionist. She introduced me to my hair stylist Neil who is absolutely phenomenal . The place itself is trendy, clean and busy even on a Monday morning. I suggest booking a reservation ahead of time however they do accept walk-ins.My scalp was in need of some TLC so Neil suggested I do a scalp treatment for my pores. The process starts off by analyzing the health of my scalp. Based on the condition of my scalp Neil was able to choose a treatment that best fit my needs. This portion of the treatment was pretty cool because the salon has technology that zooms into your pores and a video is projected into a handheld device so you are able to see what your scalp is looking like. Neil explained the condition of my scalp and continued the session with applying the recommended treatment. The first portion of the treatment starts with having gel applied throughout my scalp. The purpose of this stage is to clean the scalp and removed debris clogging my pores. After the gel was applied, Neil massaged my scalp and spread the product. He let the treatment sit for 8 minutes before washing my hair. The second portion of the treatment consisted of Scalp mask. This mask conditions the scalp and restores it back to health. This mask had to set for a few minutes. The rest of the treatment consisted of washing my hair and applying an energizing spray that would ultimately repair any damaged skin. This process took at most an hour, definitely worth every minute! While in between treatments, Neil offered refreshments and even cookies.. what a treat! After the treatment was completed, Neil showed me the health of my scalp via the microscopic device. There was a noticeable difference in my pores! Neil then blew my hair out and styled it. Very sweet lady who is passionate about her business. She explained that at her salon they care about maintaining healthy hair and repairing in order to reach best results. Review for scalp treatment only.I came back from Belize in July and had all this flaking coming from my scalp. My hair dresser initially told me my scalp was burned but when it wouldn't stop a month later, I knew something was wrong. I came to Hair Philosophy to have my scalp analyzed and treated. Yi Jiang first took pictures of my scalp with a special camera and did an excellent job of explaining the condition of my scalp. Turns out I have a dry scalp (so I can toss all of my dry shampoos that weren't working for me) so he recommended that we do an exfoliating treatment to get all the dead skin off and then a moisturizing wash. The recommended treatments are different depending on the condition of your scalp. It worked! The treatment was about a month ago and I've had no flaking since. Love how my hair turned out!!This is the first salon I've been to where they do a scalp diagnosis prior to deciding what products to use that would suit my hair. Turns out my scalp's dry and so they applied the scalp serum to help combat that which was a cooling sensation.My hair stylist Neil recommended to add some layers to my hair to create dimensions to go with my long side swept bangs, and it came out exactly how I wanted!I left the salon loving my hair and satisfied that my scalp's healthier! I had the best time getting my hair done at Hair Philosophy! Sam is so awesome and very talented. The entire staff was welcoming and really made me feel comfortable from the second I walked in. They started off by examining my scalp which was a really cool. The device determines the condition of your scalp including inflammation, dandruff, clogged pores, oil, etc. Next was color and cut...Sam is an expert when it comes to coloring and his technique is different than what I'm familiar with from getting my hair done in the past. He was able to achieve a color that many stylists have not been able to bring out since my hair is really dark and has an orange undertone. When it came to cutting my hair, Sam knew that I was terrified to get more than an inch or two cut off, so he worked around that even though my hair is quite damaged and needed much more than that taken off haha. He's very confident and knows exactly what he's doing and I highly recommend going to him if you're looking to freshen up your look! This is a slightly late review, but I came a few days ago to do a purple balayage with Jay. I've never dyed my hair before so I was kinda nervous, but Jay's great and answered all my questions. I showed him some pictures ranging from light purple (more like an ombre) to dark purple balayages and he explained what the finished result would look like. WOW. I didn't know my hair could look so good. I basically walked in with flat boring hair and walked out feeling like a whole new person. I was so lucky to have Sam as my hairdresser. Not only is he awesome, but sure knows what he's doing. It was my first time getting balayage done to my hair. I was very nervous at first, but he definitely reassured me that I'll look great no matter what. He was super kind, patient, and damn, he can do color. His talents and expertise really set me at ease. I knew I was in good hands.After several hours of patiently waiting for my hair to process, wash and then tone, I was absolutely ecstatic with the results. I came across this place on yelp, (looking on behalf of a friend) after three failed attempts at other salons (similar price range) to get their hair right, this place DID! We booked with Joy Lin and she knew exactly what to do and she did her magic. After seeing her skills, I had to get my hair cut by her. Then after seeing my hair, my sister went, and now my mom will go. All of us have very different hair types and concerns; Joy knew exactly what treatments/products were necessary for our hair. From damaged hair, hair loss, to scalp issues, she always had a solution ready. She also never pushed a treatment that wasn't needed. She's very friendly, skillful, professional, and clearly an expert what she does. I know you may be hesitant to book a pricier cut compared to the other stylists here, but the results are worth it and are unmatched. The products that she used on our hair were amazing too. Trust me, you will not regret it! Their current location is spacious and clean. Booking through their website is fast and simple. I've always had a great experience here, from the complimentary snacks, and water to the friendly staff. I have gone to Sam Bullen for my past three haircuts and now I refuse to go anywhere else! Before I started going to Sam, I had a haircut that I didn't entirely love, but wasn't sure what I didn't like about it. Sam put into words exactly what was bothering me and completely corrected it. His range of ability is incredible. I have seen him cut fabulous long hair, as well as my super short, pixie cut. His style is very creative and on trend. Rin-Lin is Amazing!! Got highlights with her a few months ago, and it was so perfect. The key to a great hair salon experience is when the hair stylist listens to your needs and preferences and she did that, well done. I also went back today for a haircut and I had the same great experience where she listened and did a perfect job. I'm not the easiest to please, so will definitely be back with her. Good environment and very nice people. I booked a women haircut reservation with Jay online and arrive on time. It takes 50 - 60 minutes to finish the whole process, including hair wash and blow dry. Jay was very considerate and provided very good advice for the style. He also taught me how to blow dry my hair at home. Again, very skillful and considerate stylist. This review is super long overdue because I was busy but honestly the time I had spent with it really reinforced how much I LOVE my hair! Got it done early March by Rain and it's been almost three months and I still love my hair nonetheless. I previously dyed my hair noir black (like the darkest shade of black) and so it was hard for me to achieve the balayage look I walked in wanting, but thankfully Rain was very upfront about that and even explained tentatively the reasons behind it. We settled on this shade of brown in which I love. I actually didn't have a specific color in mind but he managed to mix a beautiful color. And even now after it's grown out and faded a bit it doesn't look unnatural at all because of the way he dyed My hair is a bit fried since we bleached it twice before coloring but with with good care it's been doing well!
