Not only is the food delicious, but the staff and owners are so generous and sweet. This place has become a staple in our places to eat and highly recommend the hot chai and paneer dishes (and the avocado chaat and the naan lol). So good, you must go!

Brought some friends from out of town on Saturday night This was their 1st time at the restaurant.Fresh new menu made it easy to identify vegetarian or gluten free dishes. There were new "craft cocktails" as well, I ordered a "future fashioned" what was the best take on an old fashioned cocktail I had ever had, it was served with a crystal ball on top!!My friends were very impressed. They are regulars of Tiffin, an Indian restaurant local to them in Philadelphia. I have been going to Guru's for a long time and it truly was one of my favorite restaurants but I had not been there recently. I will give it that it was a busy night, but we had been there on other busy nights in the past. I didn't see the owners who are usually so friendly, but maybe they were off this night. I was so sad after I left, because what I had enjoyed as a wonderful restaurant with great food completely changed. First we ordered unsweetened chai tea, which we had ordered other times we came there, and it was served to us very sweet and only luke warm. The server left so quickly, we couldn't even tell him that this was the wrong tea. We tried to get the attention of other servers but they did not make eye contact with us or listen to us when we called them. When the server came back he told us that he had ordered the unsweetened tea, but this is what the kitchen gave him to serve us. Then we ordered a dish with panir, and I asked if it was soy panir (I'm allergic to soy) or dairy panir. The server said he would let us know. Again, he served the dish and then ran off before I could ask him about the panir--so I needed to wait quite some time to find out. I ended up sharing my husband's lamb dish which was good, but really wanted to eat my dinner. Finally after we finished my husband's dish, the server came back--I asked if my dish was soy or dairy. He said he just found out it was dairy but it was too late for me to eat my dinner. He did take the tea off our tab. One other addition that was not pleasant was a not so good singer (out of tune--we are musicians), who was using canned Indian music to accompany him. It was so loud, we couldn't hear each other in the restaurant and unfortunately could not tune him out. Sorry to say, that I won't be returning to the restaurant. This place is truly outstanding. I went here at the recommendation of my brother and I was a little skeptical since it's newtown but newtown is very different than when I lived there 30 years ago and places like Guru's make Newtown for the better. Admittedly I had a pretty American start to my dinner with a heavenly saffron lobster bisque (blame my friends who were currently in Maine and sending me photos of their time on a lobster trapping boat), my brother got their chicken Korma and I had half a tandoori chicken. The owner came out and brought us this chili chicken appetizer and everything was just so incredibly good. The service was fantastic and attentive and the owner was just so lovely (and a dead ringer for a friend of mine that I felt at home instantly)I can't wait to make it a tradition to dine there when I am back in town. I really enjoy Gurez Indian restaurant. I'm a big fan of the sog paneer and the avocado Pani Puri. they also have stuffed breads here. I'm a big fan of the sweet peshwari naan . It complements the savory curry dishes perfectly. And you can set inside or outside.Very nice staff. And the owner is often walking around greeting each table and thanking them. Third trip here this year and 5* as before. Food is spot on for flavor and no greasy rings in the bowls in which served as is commonly the case with Indian places. Solid apps and drinks list. Wine bottle hit the spot. Dinner was spectacular. Was treated and welcomed by the chef personally as he walked around the room. The test of an Indian restaurant is the ability to deliver full flavored Indian food without the usual shortcuts/ cheats of adding more chili powder and oil. "Spicy" does not mean going heavy on the green Chili's though that's certainly an option. It's a dance of spices blended together and Guru's delivers that kind of real taste, even when we requested mild spice. This restaurant became one of our favorites during the pandemic. The menu has so much variety, and the food is amazing. There were a few times when service was a little slow while dining in, but luckily, we were not in a rush.

Had the pleasure of checking this place out on Thursday evening before Easter. This was a random find via Yelp and I honestly have to say I'm thrilled we decided to try this place. We started with a samosa chat for the table. The balance of spices, sweet and tart were great and a solid start to the meal. For dinner we ordered a butter chicken dish and a malai kofta, driven largely by our two younger children. The food had a good balance to it and was flavorful while light on spices per our specific request due to the kids. Priya, the co-owner and wife of the chef happened to be taking our order and understood why we were doing the milder food. When our food came out, we had a chicken dhabi dish that she brought out that was probably at a hot to very hot level. That dish was spicy but super flavorful and hit the spot in a way I've not had in a long time at Indian restaurants. I can honestly say this is one of the best Indian restaurants I've been to for eating and they have great service to boot. Also, anyone looking to assess should note the number of Indians who go to this place. Indians rarely go to Indian places in bulk unless the food is really good. During my trip, this place was about half full of Indians (myself included), which suggests our experience was not a one off but rather indicative of the overall quality and experience one should expect. Took my girlfriend here since we live close by and I'm surprised she's still with me after what a disaster the date was because of how nasty this place is. .. First when we got there the smell of the place wasn't what we were expecting and it smelled a bit like sewage. After we sat and ordered we noticed our silverware wasn't clean. We should have noticed the red flags and left right then, but we were still being optimistic things wouldn't get any worse.... Boy were we wrong!When my gf got a refill of her drink she noticed there was a pink lipstick mark on her cup that wasn't hers or there before. She ordered a new drink w/ a straw! We thought we saw a bug run across the floor but after I pointed it out neither of us could find it.... I ordered the Garlic Shrimp and looking back feel pretty dumb about it. The signs were all there that it was a bad idea but I didn't see them. It wasn't until that night when my head was in the toilet all night that I realized what a bad idea it had been. My poor girlfriend had to nurse me back to health from food poisoning! The worst part of all of it, (believe it or not wasn't even the salmonella) would have to have been how rude the owner,Ashney or Ashni, was when they asked how we were doing & we were honest about the few things we had found. It made us super uncomfortable and our date an epic failure. When the bill came it was everything I could take not to walk out on the bill. Ok, this should be 4.5 stars for the food. The issue is the bar. I have been here at least a dozen times so far and prefer to sit in the bar and have a drink and some dinner. The food is outstanding. Unfortunately, if you sit at the bar or the tables by the bar, it takes the bartender/bartenders about 10 minutes to greet you or even acknowledge that you're there. There seems to be an overwhelmingly young group of bartenders (very inexperienced) and they always seem completely in the weeds with how busy they are with making drinks for the restaurant as the bar is rarely crowded. This is literally the o my thing holding Guru back from being a truly great experience. I understand that it is tough to get workers in the service industry but there has to be some solution. The owners are constantly posting tik tok videos and pictures of their cocktails but they look nothing like the drinks that actually get made there. To the owners, you could be making so much more $ there with a couple of experienced bartenders as it is a great place to hang out and very few Indian restaurants have a bar.....Finishing on a bright note, the food is awesome! Those with Celiac disease beware. My husband and I and 2 of my kids have Celiac disease. This was the third time I've gotten their food and been so sick from it. The last two times we thought maybe it could have been something else we ate that day but yesterday it was the only thing I ate all day purposely so I could see. There is absolutely no way that this food it completely gluten free without any cross contamination. We all got sick this time and we still are. The lack of knowledge that some restaurants have is beyond frustrating. Celiac disease is not just an allergy. The damage it does is long lasting. Guru's needs to tell people that ask for gluten free that they have a shared kitchen space and they can't insure no cross contamination. More...
