This is a great place for kids and adults alike! My daughter loves going to their youth classes and my husband goes every night I will let him to the adult classes. It is an amazing community that you find in the gym, and I highly recommend anyone thinking of trying out Jujitsu to try it out here. Friday nights they also have a FREE women's self defense class at 6:00 that I have attended many times and also highly recommend. More...

We brought our son to train here close to 2 years ago. I can honestly say that Jiu Jitsu has transformed my son's confidence in himself and is teaching him the discipline needed to take on life's many challenges. I was so captivated by the art and the atmosphere here at Gracie Barra Paso Robles that I decided to start training not long after and have never looked back. Professor Garrett is an amazing instructor and the people who train here I really do consider to be my second family. If your looking to get in shape or learn self defense, all while having fun with great people, this is the place. More...

I’ve been coming here for a year now, and learning Jiu jitsu has improved my health and my self esteem. This studio is very welcoming of all people, of all capabilities and sizes. I’ve not only gained some important skills and few more comfortable in my body, I’ve met some really great people and made some lovely friends. More...

My son is enrolled on Jiujitsu here. The coaches are doing an amazing job teaching the children more than just fighting arts. The program is really about teaching respect and disciple. It's a pleasure to watch the program. More...

I have been attending GB PASO for 8 months now, and Can honestly say the people and professor Garrett are top notch. If your looking to get in shape with a smile on your face this is the place. The second family and friends that you earn at Gracie barra PASO is an added bonus to the knowledge you learn from the greatest jiujitsu instructor around.... if your on the fence about joining just give it a try, your only regret will be that you didn’t start sooner. The coaches are some of the best in the nation and most of them compete at the regional level. They coach focusing on form/technique, improving while not getting hurt and and having fun.

Best gym in Boulder! I've belonged to large box gyms, and also did Crossfit for a few years. I always lost motivation at the large box gyms. Crossfit was fun, but eventually my body kept breaking down and I never got time to focus on getting stronger. This gym teaches power/oly lifts and integrates kettlebells/other exercises through a systematic approach. I never felt pressured to lift too much, but always received attention to my form and improvement.Owners and trainers at the gym are very smart and knowledgeable. I always came home feeling great from the workout, improved my strength, and could still function the next day (unlike crossfit). More...

Before meeting the staff at Barbell Strategy a couple months ago, I had never successfully gone to a gym more than 3 times. ..ever. I could have counted on one hand the number of times I had lifted a kettlebell or barbell. That seems like a distant memory; I'm now regularly exercising 3-4 times a week, and I'm already beginning to feel the difference in strength and body confidence. Blake has a saint-like amount of patience, basically teaching me how to lift from complete scratch, and adjusts the program as necessary to make sure I am perfecting my technique.Whether it's with friends, family, class instructors or personal trailers, I've never been able to actually keep up with a regiment, or actually learn how to properly exercise, until I started going to Barbell Strategy. Now, when someone from Boulder tosses their manbun back and casually asks, "Do You Even Lift, Bro?", I can confidently say, "Yes. Yes I Do Even Lift. Bro." More...

This is the anti-hype gym. They offer nothing more than the essentials: barbells, kettlebells, pullup bars, racks, and platforms (there are some rowers). Coaching and programming is simple and effective. There is no push to sell you anything, no fancy marketing, no weird competitive attitudes. It's very pragmatic. The coaches only care about getting you fit. They don't even seem to care too much about what sells, as long as what they do actually works (which it does, sometimes shockingly fast). There aren't a lot of gyms, anywhere, you can simply get access to a good set of weights and a bar. You either have to sign up for the whole CrossFit thing where you can't really follow a consistent program (by design, not saying it's a bad thing), or fight over the one good bar at the YMCA.If you want coaching, you can get it. If you want a class, you can do that too (though people will come in whenever and workouts overlap rather than being on a fixed clock). If you just want a place to follow your own program, maybe get some expert input from great coaches, you can have that too. If you want to actually learn how to get strong and fit, lose weight, and don't care too much about being sold on a fancy program or a spiffy gym, this is the place for you.(For context, I'm an ex-CrossFit coach, an ex-Natural Movement instructor, distance runner, a longtime martial artist and general fitness practitioner.) IF YOU'RE GYM SHOPPING, you should without a doubt consider Barbell Strategy. Whether you're looking for strength and conditioning for your sport or specifically Olympic weightlifting coaching, you'll find great programming and a great facility. You'll also get significantly more bang for your buck than you'd get going to a CrossFit box. The coaching here is as personal and technique-oriented as it gets, and coaches' bases of knowledge are encyclopedic across the board. In addition, quite literally all of the coaches here have advanced academic and professional degrees/certifications rather than just "Level 1" certificates. This means you will not only get top notch coaching, but also be surrounded by extremely intelligent people. The atmosphere is also notably supportive compared to the several other (CrossFit/Globo) gyms I've belonged to. The only person you are competing against when training here is yourself, and everybody wants you to succeed. Shoutout to Randy Hauer for being the best Olympic weightlifting coach in Boulder bar none. 10/10 would recommend. More...

I came across Barbell Strategy when I was researching gyms in Boulder and comparing them to couple of local Crossfit gyms. I ended up joining Barbell Strategy for a few reasons: 1) Amazing coaching and programming. All of the coaches are very experienced, knowledgable and know how to teach and give cues. Programming is done with your long-term progression in mind (not short-term ego boosting), and adapted to your individual goals as needed (I'm a climber and my coach tailored a program based on my climbing goals). 2) Skill and long-term progress are priorities. There's no scoreboard, and bad form/less-than-quality reps are not tolerated. Members still try hard but the environment is about leaving your ego at the door and playing the long game of staying healthy and injury-free while getting strong. I've been lifting here for nine months and have seen major #gainz while also improving all of my lifts. 3) Integrity and simplicity are cornerstone. The coaches promote and program only what they believe in and know works (hint: it's fundamental lifts and a back-to-basics approach to conditioning). You're not going to find any frivolous equipment or vanity workouts, and as someone with a minimalist philosophy, I love this. It might not be for everyone, but it's a perfect fit for me. More...

A FANTASTIC gym, the only place I'd go to in Boulder! The coaches are super nice, understanding and extremely knowledgeable. The atmosphere is so different compared to your regular crossFit gym. At BBS I find it very comfortable to work at my own pace, there is no competition between members and the coaches place a huge emphasis on technique (which really reduces risk of injury and/or cementing bad technique). I am on the weightlifting team and am really enjoying my individual programming with Randy Hauer. Randy is an absolute star, a better coach than anyone could ever ask for! He really, really knows his stuff, he is an expert not only in weightlifting, but also how to actually coach people effectively. He also specializes in runners who do weightlifting on the side. Overall I'd say this is my 'happy place', the members are all great people, the coaches really want you to succeed (safely) and the equipment is awesome. BBS is just such a welcoming and fun gym, I could never go anywhere else. More...
