I first met Missy when I was looking for a photographer for my wedding. I did a destination wedding in Florida and brought her down. She integrated as part of the family and not just the photographer. My pictures are amazing. She also talked me into doing "trash the dress" photos and they are my absolute favorite. (btw my dress was not literally trashed its hanging in the back of my closet like so many other brides I know). Missy is now our photographer for all things for Salon TEC. Mothers day shoots and Xmas photos our clients are always excited to have them done with Missy. I have a toy poodle and a blood hound and Missy is a total animal lover and captures the personality of each of them. Now she captures the personality of my 1 year old son. I’ve known Melissa at Gorman House Photography for several years now and she is an amazing photographer! She does truly fantastic work all around and the photo sessions are always a fun experience. Missy has taken all of our family portraits since our first child was born and we’ve gone with her ever since. Missy is absolutely the best photographer in my book! I first met her when she shot the photos for my sister's wedding 10 years ago. I was so impressed by all the great photos that I decided to have her as my senior portrait photographer the next year. I didn't want the same old senior photos that everyone else had, and she definitely made them more personal. Now, 9 years down the road she captured my wedding. My husband and I had no doubt in our minds who our photographer was going to be, I knew for the past decade that I was going to have Missy as my photographer. Gorman House shot our wedding and engagement last fall. They were very friendly and flexible, and their helpful guidance demonstrated their knowledge and experience. Yet, the photographers were also able to accommodate our personal preferences. Their work was focused and efficient, neither paralyzed by waiting on our instructions, nor overbearing and bossy. As for the shots themselves, our natural surroundings were incorporated very well, and all were marked by a strong sense of style.For our wedding, we took photos before the ceremony itself, so time was more limited than the usual post-ceremony approach. It was also raining, and we and the photographers were driving around downtown to find places with character. Choosing places was simple and stress-free, there was no stalling or “giving us the routine.” Despite the rain, the time constraints, my eyes-closed-mouth-open picture face, and the pressure to get good photos on the first try, the photographers remained patient, professional, creative, and collaborative. For example, the response to the rain was, “Let’s take some umbrella shots!” or, “Let’s do them on this house’s beautiful porch with a roof!” (But they didn’t trespass; the house was across the street from the wedding site and the owners offered.) And when we offered any pictures ideas of our own, we were not merely humored, but also helped along in getting the best pictures a given situations. We were allowed to be natural and spontaneous in posing, but the photographers were always ready with pose ideas.During the ceremony and reception, both photographers were very kind, polite, and professional toward us and our guests, they used their time quite efficiently, and they did not disrupt the event in any way. They gathered many great photos with minimal input from us, and they even put them into a wonderful album afterwards (still, of course, working with our personal taste). Throughout the entire process, from engagement to wedding album in hand, the folks at Gorman House were quick and respectful and we could tell that they took pride in their work. Communication was great between everyone as well.We highly recommend Gorman House to anyone looking for photographers who are a joy to work with and quality pictures that are well-suited toward their own tastes, yet not at the cost of having to call all the shots (speaking of cost, they don’t nickel and dime their customers). The people there are great to work with, and they do great work.Also, as an end note, my mother, who lives hours away from Des Moines, has been talking all about having Gorman House do family photos after she saw them at work at the wedding.
