I have a Master's degree in Evolution, Ecology and Behavior with an emphasis on bonding behavior patterns in animals, in addition to my national dog training certification from the Karen Pryor Academy. Therefore, not only do I have a better understanding than most regarding the underpinnings of behavior (e. g. evolutionary, ecological, biological, physiological, psychological, etc.), I also utilize the science of training to get the very best results. Unlike traditional dominance-based training (which is NOT based in science), I refuse to use fear, pain, intimidation or many of the so-called "tools" that cause these in order to train. Instead, I am committed to force-free training wherein I use the animal's choices and what motivates that particular animal (e.g. praise, pets, ball throws, tug, exercise, treats, etc.) to get the desired behavior before I put it on cue. Then, it's just a matter of practice so that we get to the level where the animal can perform it under any circumstance and in any environment, when asked. So many trainers who claim to love animals were taught incorrectly and continue to spread this misinformation to owners. No, you don't need to choke, shock, or hit your pet to make them comply. There is a kinder, gentler and more importantly--more effective way to train that will cement your bond and make training enjoyable for both owner and pet alike. Whomever you go with, I urge you to choose a positive reinforcement based trainer who is committed to force-free principles. Avoid "balanced" trainers, dominance-based trainers, and the like.
