Gardner/Fox

This was our first home renovation and we chose Gardner/Fox because of their reputation in our area, the tremendous detail in their architectural plans for our new kitchen/family room space, and because we knew the final product would be outstanding. Being novices to the world of home renovation, we relied heavily on their expertise, and our expectations were 100% met. They were courteous, conscientious, addressed every detail and/or concern, kept us constantly in the loop, stayed on schedule, and were very easy to work with during the entire renovation. They were attentive, easily reachable, quick to respond, and made the whole process so much easier, especially since we headed into our renovation knowing it would take about 2 months. Scott and Robert ran our project and they were beyond incredible - we are so appreciative of all they did to make our new space so amazing! They were both so accommodating and listened to our questions and concerns and addressed every one. Gardner/Fox acted as our architect, which went well, and as the general contractor, which was just OK. They excelled in coming up with a solution to a ceiling beam and a floor leveling problem but failed in leveling the ceiling causing kitchen cabinet issues. I don't think Gardner/fox ever reached out to the kitchen folks during the project. As the general contractor, I would think they should have.

There were other more minor items, for example, the washer and dryer were moved to a new room but yet the old hookups still exist.

Update:

After I posted this review, Scott Kotcamp, our project manager from Gardner/Fox contacted me and we went over my concerns. I must say, we were thrilled to have Gardner/Fox respond right away and take care of correcting a detail that was not their responsibility. We had decided to engage a cabinet company independently of Gardner/Fox, but when faced with resolving an issue with the cabinets, the cabinet company could not. G/FA did a wonderful job on our rennovation and addition. First, the actual work was very well done, and G/FA follows through on each aspect of the work until it is completely finished. Second, G/FA is extremely professional from the design process through the last bill; everything in writing and agreed-upon in advance, no surprises on their end. Third, all the folks at G/FA we worked with were pleasant, friendly people--which in a multi-month project becomes an increasingly important factor. When you get the design and contract proposal from G/FA, you may think the price tag high (and you are free to shop their design around to other contractors for the build phase). And there are a lot of fish in the sea, so maybe your uncle's buddy could do the same job for less money. Who knows. But, among other things, what you get from G/FA--with all of their documenting, billing for work in place, warranty, etc.--is an essential elimination of risk. You'll sleep well at night, and the job will get done right. In this line of work, G/FA is as close to a sure thing as there is. More...

The scope of work for our project included the replacement of some larger Custom styled/size windows, replacement of our HVAC systems in the entire house and the installation of a new kitchen. The experience as a whole was great; from the design process through the construction. As with any project, issues can arise and, in my opinion, how these issues are death with is a true measure of professionals. Gardner/Fox completed an entire renovation of our first floor and added livable space on the lower level. They truly transformed our space into something so beautiful and functional. They were extremely professional and easy to work with throughout the entire process - from design through the completion of construction. The project was completed on time (literally to the day) and we stayed generally on budget with any overages being our design decisions. They have a great attention to detail and keep you informed throughout every step of the process. Any issues were addressed quickly and to our complete satisfaction. Gardner/Fox provided complete service for my home renovation, beginning with the design phase through construction. Throughout the process everyone was a professional both in experience and conduct. After the design was chosen, and my budget had changed, Gardner/Fox went the extra mile and found ways to meet my (lower) new budget and still provide the design selected. This help continued through the construction phase when the unexpected naturally happens. Uncovered structural problems were assessed and choices were provided to solve the problem and stay on budget.
The weak link in the their service is with the interior design staff, it is difficult to schedule a common day and time. Once you are able, the service is very good and overall I am happy with my experience with this project. More...

We had a complete basement renovation done. The basement was completely gutted and then transformed into usable space which included storage. The ceiling was raised and duct work re-routed. G/F kept us informed of any changes from the original contract and nothing was done without our review and consent. Our project was a renovation/expansion of the kitchen, renovation of two second floor baths (one a master), and the conversion of the sun porch to a fully functional sun room extension off the main living room. The resulting project was of very high quality, on budget, and only slightly behind schedule. Success with two of those three elements is very good in my view and the schedule delays had the least impact on our budget while preserving the quality of the project. The G/F architect who worked on our project provided a great solution to the porch-to-sunroom conversion and the results appears as though it was a part of the original construction (nearly 90 years ago). The on-site project lead was an excellent carpenter and craftsman, providing very creative solutions along the way which made the final result (especially in the sun room) exceed our expectations. One valuable benefit of working with Gardner Fox is the warranty. We had a couple of small thing arise that were not a big issue, but the process was incredibly easy and resolutions were provided rapidly. In fact, we were able to contract G/F to preform several small projects over the past few years and since we were using the G/F team, the quality of the work and the reliability of the estimates were a known factor. We would definitely hire G/F again and I have recommended the firm to friends and neighbors for the past 8+ years and will continue to do so. More...

Gardner/Fox renovated two bathrooms for us. One bathroom was in need of an update. The other required a redesign of the entire bathroom. We were very pleased with the project from beginning to end. We had an excellent project manager and all involved in the project were extremely respectful. They kept the non construction areas protected and cleaned all areas effected at the end of the day. The professionalism, expertise, and artistry displayed by the Gardner/Fox staff and craftsmen is quite extraordinary. Our relationship with G/F encompassed several major projects. The construction of our home was nothing short of breathtaking. A subsequent condominium renovation is equally impressive. From concept to completion, architect to project manager and highly skilled artisans, the experience of observing the individual and collective levels of creativity was awe-inspiring. Lastly, the customer service following project completion is first rate. There are too many people to thank for making our home and additional designs so beautiful. Nevertheless, mille graze!

My husband and I hired Gardner & Fox last winter to redo our kitchen. We had seen their work in other houses in our neighborhood and were very impressed with what we saw. We had a small kitchen and weren't sure what we wanted to do. They had great ideas and were able to enlarge our kitchen by changing our existing floor plan. Everyone who worked for them were polite and respectful of our home. At the end of each work day they cleaned up. We now ave a beautiful kitchen. We began working with Gardner/Fox 5 years ago when we wanted to redesign our home so it would work better with our lifestyle, and take advantage of the beautiful outdoor views. Our project resulted a complete remodel of the entire home, including 3 1/2 baths and a new kitchen. We decided to move out during the renovations, and they completed our project within their projected time frame. What impressed us was the respect and confidence the sub-contractors had in Gardner/Fox, and how responsive they were to Gardner/Fox and how considerate they were with us. The results are spectacular. The design accomplished our goals from children entertaining friends, to hosting cocktail parties, to everyday family time. We have used Gardner/Fox for several major renovations over the past 10 years and have always been very pleased with the experience and work quality. The most recent project was a near complete renovation of a large house that included numerous unique challenges requiring customized solutions. They are an extremely professional firm that provide very personalized service and the highest quality of workmanship. They also seem to have excellent relationships withe their subcontractors, which helps expedite jobs. While this experience comes at a cost, our experience is that it is cost-effective because the quotes are accurate, the work is completed on time, the workmanship meets or exceeds expectations, and they stand behind their work. Garner-Fox did our rennovation of our main bath and bedroom/family room in 2002. Two things that impressed me the most about their company versus the rest. 1.They finished the project on time and within their checklist that they updated with us on a regular basis.
2. There archictecture team far surpassed any other group that we looked at for doing our rennovation. The ideas were progressive and yet ,sometimes subtle lighting or crown molding suggestions that made our rooms desired by many of our friends that visit our home.

GFA did both the design and the build of a major two story addition to our home that included a new kitchen/family room , 2 new bedrooms, a new garage and a new deck. The design maximized the use of the space and increased the value of our home in a very efficient fashion. They did a great job managing the project and came in on-time and within budget. We were living in our home during the entire project (with 3 small children!) GFA was very easy to work with and actively worked to make it as easy on our family as possible. An example of this was temporarily relocating the stove to another room so we could continue to cook without a kitchen. They closely managed their subcontractors and they managed me with a professional project plan so that everyone knew his and her responsibilities and kept to the schedule. One of the challenges was matching the new brick with 30 year old brick and they did a great job making the new look old such that no one can tell the difference! We did a renovation on our Wayne home about 2 years ago. Working with Gardner Fox was delightful. The project managers were all great and we met on a weekly basis to make sure everything was on schedule, whicdh it usually was. Gardner Fox uses the best subcontractors and does a great job of letting you know when everyone is coming and when the job is going to be completed. I've been working with Gardner Fox for about 6 years. I have used them to update my 100 year stone colonial from modernizing my basement, laundry room, changing out all my exterior windows and doors and updating my wife's dressing room. Once a project is scoped, they can complete it without the owner supervision. Though they may not be the lowest price, their quality, reliability and trustworthiness out weigh any premium you might pay.

My most recent projects with GF includes building a 5000 square foot car garage and renovating a new 8000 square foot house I just bought. In today's economy there are plenty of contractors willing to do the work I need and I'm sure most of them are okay; but when you have had the most pleasant experiences like me with a contractor, why change?

Can you imagine when you set up an appointment to meet or they commit to completing a project within a given time, they actually meet your expectations. I'm busy and need reliability in the contractors that I choose. Gardner Fox is all about commitment, good workmanship and honesty. Please feel free to contact me to further explain my satisfaction.
