Federal Paving Systems

I am a homeowner in Pinole. I am not connected with the contractor other than as a customer.  I first became aware of Federal Paving Systems in 2005 when they replaced my next door neighbors concrete driveway, stairs, and small patio with pavers.  They were very happy with their work and I thought it looked great. So when my driveway needed replacing in 2013, I called them first because I noticed how good the neighbors' pavers looked over time, and that the work had held up very well. Deivide quoted a fair price for the job and his crew completed the work on schedule. My wife and I were very happy with the results.  In 2016 we dug out and renovated the basement of our house to create a guest unit. We needed to enlarge and completely replace the old concrete patio  adjacent to it in our rear yard and  build stairs  from the patio down into the garden.  We were going to use flagstone, however, all the quotes were very high so we decided to use Belgard patio pavers and called FPS again. The price was about a 1/3 of what we had been quoted for Flagstone. The entire job turned out beautifully and we have gotten many compliments since it has been installed. we had several downed trees,and some dead trees that were in danger of causing damage  on a very steep hill,creating a fire hazard as well as blocking our seasonal creek. daveide and his crew arrived and made short work of the job. pulling the wood off the hill clearing the creek and clearing a firebreak. excellent work in just a few hours. i would and will use the company again. i highly recommend federal paving systems for all landscaping needs,not just for pavers. Preliminary disclaimer - I do not work for the company, nor do I have any family members or friends that are in any way connected with Federal Paving Systems other than in a business transaction relationship. With that out of the way, our experience with Pete and Deivide and the rest of the crew at FPS was positive and rewarding. We had them back four times for various paving projects, starting with a complete rip and replace of a sad asphalt driveway that had long ceased to be functional.Next in line was our back yard where they dug a french drain before producing a very artistic framing for the garden. It is a constant source of pleasure for us to sit in our private rear garden and enjoy the clean look of Belgrade pavers.Returning several months later, FPS created a sitting area with a circular outdoor firepit based upon my wife's design. It came out better than expected.Finally, FPS went to do battle with the Contra Costa County office to replace our badly battered encroachment with a shiny new concrete slab. This has made a major improvement to the house curb appeal.Yes, there were delays due to weather and city inspector timetables, but that did not not detract from the quality of the craftsmanship nor my opinion of the company. My name is John. I interviewed 6 paver companies for my small 20'x20' backyard project. Pete @ Federal Paving Systems blew the others out of the water with his detailed presentation! He listened to my ideas, gave his experienced opinion and we came together on a great plan. He went through the entire 4 day process, brought sample products and an extensive catalog of pictures of past jobs. He brought references and a list of local jobs I could witness. His estimate was in the mid range of the six I received. Pete came each morning to give his English speaking foreman the plan for that day! His crews were punctual, respective and diligent with a high attention to detail. They cleaned up well each day and finished in the 4 day promised period. Wow. We finished before anticipated. Pete and his crew were helpful and professional. I am your typical high-maintenance customer, and Pete did everything he could to reassure me through the whole process. We had a backyard retaining wall and sideyard retaining wall replaced, from rotten wood to beautiful keystone ashlar block and cap. This was complicated by a huge tree root in the way. The guys took care of it, no problems. And, we had FPS demo our existing deck and arbor. Nothing but the highest praise for Federal Paving. We worked with Pete, who gave us the best estimate of anyone we consulted, and told us he would always be available--if we called and he did not answer, he would call back within a few minutes. He wasn't kidding. The work crew was excellent--always on time, always working hard, always professional. We were a tiny project; we barely fit their minimum criteria. They were working a larger job down the street, but we never felt like we were not a priority.The quality of work is outstanding. Before, we had an old, decrepit brick patio that came with the house; now, our patio is beautiful, a wonderful place to spend time together, that also increased the value of our home. Our driveway was installed almost two years ago. After the biggest rains in five years, it is looking great. My wife and I drew a design which the crew executed wonderfully and even suggested a couple of modifications which enhanced it. David, the owner, and Pete, the sales representative addressed all our concerns in a timely manner. Federal is not the least expensive paving contractor but the prices are competitive and you are paying for quality. This company is awesome! I was raised in the construction industry and what a joy to see such a hard working and conscientious crew! David, co-owner and his crew got more done in one day that would take others a week. Pete, project manager, was so helpful tweaking my design. I have 100' of retaining wall that winds around my vegetable garden to end in a half circle sitting wall around a 10' diameter cobble circle  I also have 800' of paver patio and walk way, .David did so many extras for me and even added a step that I left off my design. My project was 95% on schedule, even through all the rain. Everything was fairly priced, even two major change orders. They always took time to answer all my questions and I was so happy they didn't use sub-contractors like a lot of other Paver companies. We used Federal Paving 2 years ago. The few rains we had showed that the drainage worked for the first time in our houses 30 years. This last month has truly tested the drainage. Pete made sure we had no more flooding and stepped our job up to a commercial drainage job. The paving looks amazing and the function is better than expected. Pete and his team were excellent. I looked at various companies for pavers (backyard patio, side walkway from driveway), and Federal Paving Systems beat them  all out. Pete was prompt, straight to the point, and professional. He said they'd possibly finish early, and being doubtful due to the initial rainy weather, they did the job in about a week and a half or less! They cleaned evening up at the end and were a pleasure to work with. During the process, an amount of cash was removed from my account in addition to the deposit. I brought this up to Pete and he was on top of it. It was taken care of without issue. Also, I voiced specifics on what I wanted with the backyard for a more contemporary look, and he suggested I go to the stone yard in Hayward. Deivide and his crew are great. I needed a concrete wall demoed in my front yard and after getting 5 quotes from other services I finally went with Federal. Mostly because they had the best price by a mile. Not only did federal complete the job perfectly, they also did it in under 3 hours! Every other service said it would take at least 2 days. I was recommended by neighbors on NextDoor. Called them and had someone setup an appointment. He walked me through the reason why they were a accredited and explained some of the options and recommendations for my driveway. Assured me it would be handled the right way. We recently moved from San Diego to the Naglee Park area of San Jose and purchased an older Spanish Style home. The backyard was mainly grass with a small red-tile patio.  There was no place to put all of our teak patio furniture.  The front yard was overgrown with vegetation and trees with deep roots that threatened the foundation and driveway.  After interviewing three companies we decided to go with Federal Paving Systems, Inc.  We liked their no-interest rate for 15-months finance package.  Our salesman and project manager is Pete, who put together our entire project and supervised it from beginning to end.  We had a few delays due to rain.  We appreciated being able to be in contact with Pete during the day, evenings and weekends.  It was wonderful to have his crew show up on-time, and they were all highly skilled in their trade.  Napolis, selected the perfect plants for the front yard and we love our pergola in the backyard!  Pete told us everything is guaranteed and he stuck to his word and sent the crew back to make a few adjustments.  As an added touch, we bought two fountains, one for the front and one for the back.  Pete's team ran the electrical and created a proper base and they look beautiful.  The crew was very focused, no property damage. All of the work was neat and professional and always cleaned up afterward. Had about 1600 sq feet of paving done in our backyard.  Pete was very responsive to my questions and concerns. The crew worked extremely fast.  Took about 4 days to dig up, haul, sand, pave the bricks down and build about a 12 foot seating area.  One thing I would warn the neighbors about is that the trucks and machinery takes up alot of space, if you have neighbors as a courtesy should give them a heads up. Outstanding service all the way.   First time I have ever had supervisors on site everyday overseeing a project that started on time with workers that never stopped from 8:00 am to 4 pm each day.  Our patio is better than we envisioned and looks fabulous.  We got a lot of bids for this job and this was by far the best value for the money and best of all no interest for 12 months.  The work is carefully inspected and far exceeded our expectations. We just had our driveway and one of our back garden areas paved by Federal Paving Systems. I have to say we are totally delighted with the results. Without a doubt they are one of the most professional companies we have ever dealt with. From the initial meeting with Pete we were sold on the company and their process. We knew exactly what we were going to get in the way of the stone, the color and the design. What we weren't prepared for was how beautiful it would look when it was completed. Pete had told us we would be happy with the end result and boy was he right! It looks positively amazing and we can't wait to buy new garden furniture to set off our new patio area. What a great company to work with, the management is super and monitors everything from start to finish and keeps you in the loop as the job progresses. My new driveway was just completed and it's gorgeous! Federal Paving was so easy to work with, all their guys were hardworking, very polite and cleaned up the area well at the end of each day. Pete did a great job of keeping in touch with me, too. This is an outstanding company from start to finish - they appeared on time when they said they would, finished the job earlier then scheduled, and were honest about what needed to be paved and what didn't - other contractors insisted that the asphalt in front of the driveway (city property) had to be paved because the bobcats they'd need to bring in would crack it, but when Pete came to my house for an estimate he laughed, shook his head and said that it didn't need to be paved. He was right. And not only that, but because I had to work within a set budget and thought I couldn't afford a much-needed pathway (based on other quotes) Pete steered me to a more cost effective paver than the one I originally chose, so now I also have a beautiful pathway.  Pete's honesty not only saved me thousands but definitely impacted my decision to hire Federal. I actually enjoyed having their guys here, watching their daily progress, and talking to Pete almost every day - and imagine my surprise when Pete presented me with a box of See's Candies for Easter! I had a great experience working with Federal Paving Systems Inc, as well as with Pete Maiorana and his entire crew.  I would fully recommend them to anyone looking for any type of paving work, Synthetic Turf , fire pit, or outdoor kitchen.  We had an old, broken up concrete patio in the backyard of the home we purchased in San Francisco. We replaced it with beautiful pavers, synthetic turf and drainage. After looking at several companies we decided to go with Federal Paving Systems Inc because we met with Pete and he had some great ideas and showed us exactly what the end result would look like.  The crew showed up on schedule, were amazingly fast and conscientious - very concerned to make sure I was satisfied - and did great work. A year later the synthetic turf had sunk a bit on the side . I called Pete and he had someone out the next week to fix the issue. It was  a quick fix due to the rain but i was impressed that a year later they came out and were just great a fixing the little issue I had. FPS just finished putting pavers in our entire backyard and they did an AMAZING job! I could not be happier. Before the pavers, we had a bunch of weeds growing through that were hard to get rid of. We also had granite fines which the dogs continuously tracked in the house. With the pavers, it looks like a completely different backyard. It's clean looking, no weeds, and no dirt being tracked in. I have been wanting this for awhile and so happy we finally pulled the trigger with FPS.  Pete met with us to give us a consultation and explained the process step by step so we would know what to expect. Federal Paving Systems just completed installing pavers in my backyard patio and front yard. They did an amazing job and Deivide was a pleasure to work with! Originally I was just looking to get estimates, but when I met Deivide and he explained the process in detail, I was sold. My plan was then to have the pavers installed within a 2wk time frame, but I wasn't sure if they would be able to fit it in their schedule is such short notice. To my surprise, they took on the project immediately and finished in record time. Deivide estimated 7 days to complete, but it only took 3 and 1/2 days. Here's the timeline: I met with Deivide on a Thurs, signed the contract the next day, they broke ground the following Mon, and completed everything by Thurs.....even after I added an additional task (turf in the front lawn). These guys worked fast and with great skill, and delivered on all levels (professionalism, knowledge, timeline, etc.). I would definitely hire them again for future projects! More...

I hired Federal Pavings Systems to do some paver work in my backyard recently.  They did an awesome job!  Not only was the work absolutely excellent, but working with them, was actually a pleasurable experience.  I have owned my own home for many years and worked with many contractors.  Let's just say the experiences have not always been good.  There are many crooked contractors out there.   So working with a company that not only had great prices, but delivered on their promises, was a very welcome change.  The process started  out with meeting with their salesman, Pete.  Pete was easy to work with and came up with some great suggestions for my backyard project.  Also, Pete was present at the project on the first day and periodically throughout.  It was great to have him there because he made sure things were going right and answered any questions I had.  A real pleasure to work with!I highly recommend Federal Paving Systems for any paver or stone work you need done.  They are a quality company that delivers from start to finish.  A rare find in the world of contractors. I was eager to tear out the old concrete from my patio which was very poorly graded and replace it with pavers.  I got bids from 3 companies - all three of which specialize in pavers.  While I was impressed by all three companies, I ultimately chose to work with Pete from Federal Paving systems.  I chose Federal Paving Systems because Pete's depth of experience in the industry came across very clearly (he's seen his fair share of projects), he suggested some really great  and creative ideas for my new patio, and more importantly I was impressed by his true passion for what he does and a clear and credible commitment from Pete to making sure the project turns out great.  He gave me peace of mind and confidence from the start and since then has proven to live up to his commitment.  It's been a refreshing experience compared to many of the other home improvement projects I've done.They were able to start rather quickly and finish the project on schedule despite unexpected delays due to unannounced PG&E work on my block.  I wasn't able to be home during most of the project due to work travel, but I received daily updates from Pete and his opinion came in tremendously helpful along the way when we encountered curve balls due to grading and tree issues.  I also was very impressed by Pete's flexibility and responsiveness... he recognized that I have a challenging work & travel schedule and he truly was flexible to talk and meet at all kinds of hours while always being very gracious and professional.  When I saw the finished patio and sitting wall, I couldn't believe how wonderfully they transformed my yard.  The person who laid the pavers is truly a craftsman in his trade.  I was very impressed by the care and meticulous detail he put into each and every stone that was laid.  They really do beautiful work.  Since they finished, I actually added additional work with left over pavers.  The few friends who have seen the work have also been very impressed.  I would definitely use them again for any needs I have in the future and would highly recommend them as well. We were introduced to Federal Paving systems through our landscape designer and hired them after meeting with Pete, one of their contractors. Pete has been in the business for 20 years and was always available to answer all our questions and educate us throughout  the project. Federal Paving just completed most of the work on our backyard which was an empty canvas of dirt and mud when they first started work on it. The crew that came in throughout  the week were fast, efficient, courteous and precise. They did a great job of cleaning up after each day's work and I was pleasantly surprised when they hosed down my driveway before leaving. They worked under minimum supervision and were thorough professionals throughout the process. Sebastian, the foreman who laid out our pavers was very accomodating when I told him that I wanted my pavers cut in a specific way.Pete would call me each day to update me on the day's progress and the agenda for the next day. This was such a pleasant change from other contractors I have worked with over the years. I did not have to track him and call him for an update. He would give me the schedule well in advance. FPS just completed our patio paver project on 9/14 here in San Jose.  Budget was our #1 concern for taking on such a big task for a home improvement project of demolition for an old wood deck & replacing 950+ sq ft with pavers- so we received 7 bids total.  Most of our bids were from the South Bay from independent landscapers, well-known paver companies and even a few unlicensed contractors for comparison purposes.  One of my concerns choosing FPS is that they are not in the South Bay (located in El Sobrante) and were not a personal referral from anyone I knew.  I just happened to see their Craigslist posting, saw the 5 Yelp reviews and took a chance with an estimate.  Pete was their sales rep and not only did he reassure us with the quality of their work, he provided a portfolio and explained the process start to finish.  What we liked best about Pete & FPS, is that they actually cared to win our business!  Even though they weren' the cheapest bid- they were the ONLY company (out of 7) to follow-up to see if they could work within our budget.  Pete is persistent, but respectful and not pushy at all.  We took a chance with FPS and they far-exceeded our expectations!  Entire project took 3 days from start to finish including the demo of the existing wood deck when the projected timeframe was anticipated to last to 6-8 days.  We were so impressed with the 2 crews that worked on the project.  Flavio was the foreman on demolition & prep- he along with his crew were amazing!  You wouldn't believe how much wood there was and they had everything cleaned up and swept on day 1- ready for paver installation on day 2.Sebastian was the foreman on paver installation for days 2 & 3.  He is passionate about his craft and he made sure each and every angle cut was precise and to my liking.  He noticed a few sections where an existing walkway would merry up to the paver patio and wasn't level.  He fixed the issue along with some other hazardous joints between concrete slabs that were not even a part of the paver project.  He asked if I had kids and expressed his concern with their safety so he fixed them free of charge!  There are still honest/hard workers out there!        The entire work area was cleaned completely and even hosed down.  You would have never known that a dump truck, a bobcat, & 9 pallets of pavers had been brought to and from the front to the backyard since it was so clean.  We are extremely satisfied with the quality of the installation and will certainly recommend FPS for all of your paving needs.  This might be the longest YELP review I've ever done, but I felt compelled since there wasn't a lot out of reviews out there to make an informed decision and these projects are not cheap!  Do not hesitate to contact FPS as they will deliver on their promise! We wanted to pull up the old concrete on our driveway and path and replace it with brand new pavers. We shopped around a little for a few different quotes, and Deivide ended up being the most competitive--plus, we just really liked him when he came over to chat to us about what we needed. He was friendly, professional, punctual, and obviously very skilled. (Plus, his mom was in the van with him, which we thought was kind of adorable.) His guys did the job quickly and without much mess, but we must have had some miscommunication somewhere about the pattern in which we wanted the stones laid out. I was dreading calling Deivide back and having what I worried would be an unpleasant conversation about how the result wasn't what we'd agreed upon, but he was incredibly understanding and helpful and agreed to redo the job within the week, which I thought showed a wonderful respect for customer service. He really cared about us being happy with the work his team did, and once they rotated the stones to the way we'd wanted them, our driveway and path looked perfect. We were 100% thrilled with the result and love how the pavers are holding up--in terms of adding curb appeal to our house, I think it's probably the best money we've ever spent. So it took me a while to narrow down which paver guy to use when I finally decided to get rid of this ugly, muddy colored wooden deck left from the previous owner in my 30x50 ft back yard, and have a complete make-over for my back yard since it was neglected for almost a year.  I did my research on Yelp and Craigslist, trying to "get a feel" of which paver guys are at least decent to call for a quote... so Yelp has a couple of paver/landscaping companies (the usual suspects such as system something, and something pro, and etc), with reviews ranging from excellent to mediocre to down-right nasty.  And Craigslist was not that helpful either since there were no reviews to begin with, but I was manage to pick one company from Craigslist to call, yeah, Federal Paving (i think it is the only one company on Craigslist that provides a detailed description of how the company prepare and lay pavers, a good resource for landscape dummy like myself).  Anyway, so I called system something, something pro, Federal, and one other company that my friend referred me to. And the quotes, oh boy, is ridiculously different!  The something pro sales quote me almost 3x the amount that Jose from Federal Paving quoted me.  I guess the something pro sales took me for some dumb f.  Then the system something guy didn't even want to give me a quote, since he knew i was getting bids.. I supposed I needed to show him my hole cards before he showed me his... long story short, Jose' quote was competitive with the one my friend referred me to, but I decided to go with Federal Paving because Jose had been incredibly patient, polite and responsive with me. He showed up on time for an on-site estimate and worked with me on my limited budget. When the job begun, David (the owner!) showed up with his crew of 4 at 9 am SHARP on Monday.  It took them almost a full day to demolish this muddy-colored, overdone, wooden deck left from the previous owner of the house, got rid of all the crap that was growing and also excavate all the dirt to prepare the base (and there was A LOT of dirt).  The crew was very efficient, and polite.  David even got rid of a bunch of gravel underneath deck for free! Now, that was a big plus since contractors almost always charge you on things that was a "surprise" to them.  It took David and his crew roughly 2 and half day to complete my paver patio.  When I got home from work on Wednesday, I was pleasantly surprised that my drive way and my back yard was clean and neat, with minimum amount of debris, if any.    I am quite satisfied with the patio since I wanted a simple one to begin with.  I will post some pictures when sod and wood chips and sprinkler system are installed (dont want to do Federal any injustic).  All in all, my experience with Federal Paving was pleasant, up-front and professional, and it was one of the better ones that I have had dealing with contractors.  Great Job!!!  If I ever want to expand my patio or make change to my back yard, I will definitely use them again.
