First dessert place in San Diego with a great reputation for scrumptious sweets. Family decided to end the night with something sweet. Right off the bat, the luxurious sweets were visible through giant windows. They were able to cater to our large party of 30 outside. They definitely have an affinity for edible flowers. I was attracted to their berries and nutty pastries and cakes. I opted for the Macadamian Cheesecake slice ($11). I tried others and fell in love with the Fruit Tart, which I initially wanted and wished I had gotten. The Fruit Tart was silky and smooth with just right amount of sweetness and tartness. The Macadamian Cheesecake was good, but not as creamy as I would expect from a cheesecake. Their famous bread pudding was yummy when warm. We learned that if you ordered it To-Go, they give you the ceramic it's baked in and it's cold. But once served warm, it's served with a side of fresh cremé and chocolate syrup. It's addicting. All of the fruits and sauces in the sweets tasted fresh and was a great accompaniment. Overall, I'd recommend this place for coffee and sweets! More...

Sublime. It's like going into the Louvre but you get to EAT the art work. So delicious so worthy the walk...so worth the caffeine induced insomnia with the accompanied Flat White. Just absolute dessert perfection. Run don't Walk More...

I love Extraordinary Desserts! Great for a quick meetup with a friend, date night, or even Postmating a slice of cake when lazy. Always delicious!

Yes, these are gorgeously decorated desserts (los of flowers and the edible gold flakes and dipped chocolate) and yes the decor and service are nice (trendy large scale and modern; and perfunctory but polite). My complaint is that the price is not justified by what I tasted. The cake is made up of basic cake and a ton of whipped cream. We liked the lemon bars, but they were a bit too tart and lip puckering. Overall, I found this place to be pretentious and over-whipped. It's cool for a date night when you're looking to impress someone new or maybe a business person entertaining out-of-town guests. But for day to day dessert treats or a kids birthday cake, surely there are better options in this bustling metropolis. You're paying for their high lease for the location at Balboa Park and for the trendy decor. More...

First time here, and was pleasantly surprised! Contrary to the place's exterior, the inside is so beautifully decorated and modern looking. But onto the point which is the food...I ordered the grilled cheese combo which is around $16; includes half a sandwich and a bowl of tomato soup. I got the mushroom melt, which was somewhat bland on its own, but heavenly when dipped into the soup. I think the bread slices were a bit too thick, but it's not a huge issue because it was good quality bread. I really really enjoyed the soup, it was thick, had a strong tomato flavor, and paired so well to dip the sandwich in. I was skeptical about the price of this, but it turned out to be a decent portion (I did not finish the sandwich or the soup). We also got the lemon bar, a good slab of it for around $4. It was beautifully tangy with a nice crumbly base. To me, if going to this place as an occasional treat and not on the regular, the price is not really an issue. You can tell the ingredients are high quality, and a lot of care goes into making the dishes, and especially, presentation. Buuut I took off one star for the tea... it was $9 for a small little pot? Didn't finish it, but I believe it would have only poured 4 cups. It was quite good tea, just personally, I draw the line at high prices for tea (maybe I'm biased, because you can get a big ol' pot at dim sum restaurants for $2). More...

I enjoyed the vegan sundae so much last time that I came back for it again! I thought before it made some sense that the fudge wasn't hot because I got it to go, so I figured this time if I got it for here that the fudge would be warm- it wasn't :(. If you're going to call it a hot fudge sundae, please have the fudge be hot!! For $14 I expect the sundae to match the description. That aside everything was delicious and I will definitely come back, just with slightly different expectations regarding their regular fudge sundae. More...

A must visit if you're ever in San Diego, doesn't matter which location you go to because they're both beautiful and serve the same delicious desserts. If you had to pick one thing to try I would definitely recommend the cakes. Whether you like light and fruity or rich chocolatey flavors, there's something for everything. If you're a fan of cheesecake I highly recommend the dulce de leche cheesecake or the toasted macadamia cheesecake, probably the best cheesecake I've ever had. Yes it's pricey but a lot of work goes into the desserts (flavor + presentation) and it's an experience. Perfect date night spot. More...

This place is like chocolate heaven. I had the Chocolate Caramel Decadence and Bread Pudding Chocolate Croissant. The Caramel Decadence was more sweet than chocolatey, it's enjoyable for just a few bites then it becomes too sweet. The Croissant was really delicious. It had a crunchy outside and the inside was soft and had thin chocolate layers inside. The sweetness was just perfect. The options were more chocolatey/milky/creamy than fruity. All baked goods. Didn't seem to have healthy dessert options so definitely more for a treat than an everyday thing. The serves were really pretty. The portions are pretty large and can be shared with 2/3 people. The dessert prices averaged $12 eat in and $16 to go. The place has a really relaxing feel. They had options for high and low seat. I recommend at least one visit. More...

Holy moly this place is great!! My family came in hoping for nice snack and treat and got so much more. I definitely recommend the turkey breast panini. I am a support picky eater and when I received it I first thought I wouldn't like it due to the red looking sauce on the sandwich. But when I tried it, I was amazed at how good it was. I think it was the best sandwich I have ever had! I also ordered the rose lemonade and a chocolate mousse, both to die for! Also service was great! More...

If you want to have a slice of heaven then you need to get the Viking cake! It is an explosion of chocolate flavors. Happy hour is from 2-6 so make sure to pair it with a cappuccino. The cappuccino is BOLD and will go well with the sweetness of the desserts. They also have a large menu for lunch and dinner options. I recommend trying the truffles chips! More...

Always one of my favorite places to take family and friends in San Diego!! I have always loved the location on Union street because you can walk here from Gaslamp area and walk off the sugar high on your way back to the car! Lol We took our family here during their visit and they were impressed!! This place is perfect for celebrating, fancy plates and just great vibe. Be sure to pace yourself with all the sugary goodness that is stored here! It sooo good!! My favorites are the Truffle Framboise and the La Bete Noir. Heavy on the chocolate goodness but very balanced flavors. I've never had anything here that was too much in a bad way if that makes sense. Everything was just perfect! Love this place! More...

Walking into this place is like walking into a candy store but with pastries. This place is a dessert paradise! Not only does the presentation of these desserts look amazing but they also taste amazing. If only my body allows me to eat desserts everyday I would definitely frequent this place. The decor and desserts are unarguably beautiful! I'm beyond glad that after all these years they upheld the standard and quality in taste and presentation. Their non-chocolate desserts are exceptional, their chocolate desserts however, are disappointing. The sponge portion is no better than those from the box cake while the rich and dense texture chocolate is mostly sweet with minimal cocoa flavor. Pros:-Beautiful and delicious desserts (non-chocolate)-Great place to bring out of towners -Has savory food for those don't crave desserts-A variety of delicious tea optionsCons:-Long wait-Pricy Atmosphere: Vibrant, modern, suitable for all occasions More...

Despite the long lines and tight squeeze inside, I had an enjoyable experience here. The line moves slowly, but that's okay because there's plenty of things to look at in the dessert windows. I had heard rumors of a vegan sundae and was delighted to see a sign saying they had it! I got it to go, and though I'm not so confident it was gluten-free, it was really tasty! The coconut vanilla ice cream was super smooth and the chocolate sauce was very rich. The solid piece of chocolate on top was very delicious and I was very happy with Sundae overall. I'll be back! Watch out for the lines- come before 7pm! More...

Ok...so I had a huge craving for some food dessert and coffee, and we looked up this place, and thought it was perfect to satisfy that craving. We went in at around 12pm, and were seated right away. We were the only people there at that time. The desserts looked phenomenal, everything looked so scrumptious and you just wanted everything. We ended up getting the servers recommendation which was like a fruit tart and meringue. It arrived looking way too pretty to eat, but the fruit was super tart and there was no sweetness to it!! We also paid $12 for it...which was OK but did not like the dessert at all. I think we will give another try when we visit San Diego again because they had other options as well. More...

We were craving for a good dessert after dinner, so after researching and reviewing online many times, we made a decision to come here for an after dinner sweet. Boy, we made the right decision. I ordered two scoops of the creme burlee and the girlfriend ordered a chocolate hot fudge with some cracker things inside. I must say that hers was much more sumptuous and delicious, more than mine.I wouldn't say my creme burlee was exceptionally good. It wasn't bad, but I wouldn't recommend it.The line wasn't too long, and there's plenty of seating inside of this joint.Overall grade: A More...

My wife and I have been patrons since 2005 (Hillcrest location) -- even after moving away from downtown. We frequently bring visiting family and friends here. My daughter absolutely loves their chocolate chip cookie dough, which you buy and bake at home. Often times it's very difficult to choose only one dessert. But don't just go here for just the desserts, their regular menu is equally as good. More...

I loved everything about this place. The visual menu where you just walk in is amazing . It rotates all the time but you can just pick a slice of whatever looks appealing to you and then get yourself seated at the table. So much craftsmanship and artistry goes into these desserts, and it shows. Karen Krasne, the proprieter, released a book with all the recipes featuring step-by-step preparations that can take roughly a week to prepare just 1 cake! Have had many of the cakes here but the passion fruit ricotta and blood orange ricotta are the best, hands down. Also try their various tea blends. The pillow talk has a pleasant, floral flavor that pairs nicely with just about everything.Only complaint is the move away from their original location on 5th street. Both of their new locations both have very modern decor with lots of sharp angles and cold metal and acrylic surfaces. Feels too clinical. Far cry from their cozy old location, but admittedly feels larger. Especially the one on Union. More...
