I stopped by last night to pick up some takeout food, and Tina completely made my night.  She put together a huge vegetarian combo of items for 2, and insisted that if I didn't like anything that I could come back and she would make it right.  I can't imagine that ever being necessary because every time I visit the food is absolutely amazing.  And I found out everything she makes is gluten-free (including the injera, which she makes the traditional way using teff flour only, while a lot of other restaurants mix regular flour in), which is an added bonus!  This is really such a unique restaurant, where you can feel how much love is invested into the food and how much they want you to enjoy your experience.  I can't recommend this place enough! This is a wonderful place owned by an amazing lady. We came in after they had closed the establishment. She saw us hungry and opened up the place for us, to cook us some of the best wats(sides) and injeras. The chef cooks with love to feed her guests. We had their injeras with chicken and some veggie wats. Everything was so flavorful and fresh. The spices make you come for more.  Stop by this place leisurely for dinner or lunch, and you will not regret it. More...

What a sweet lady. This is a small self run restaurant, the owner is the embodiment of the American Dream.   Coming to the US and becoming a successful business woman.  She even offered to let me come and learn how she makes the bread.  We had dinner here last night the food was great (totally gluten and peanut free).  The injera(sp) bread had such a great flavor.  We tried all of her dishes.  The garbanzos were a little bland for my taste but everything else was delicious.  I hope she is successful because we will be coming back on a regular basis as long as she is around. Five stars on the condition that you know the food is being warmed up / isn't being prepared immediately as you get it. I think if you didn't know that you might be disappointed, but otherwise - great deal. I went in tonight to get take-out, and got tikil gomen and gomen, and they gave me a big thing of rolled up injera, container of rice, and a lenti soup, all of which was about $13 - but I paid with cash, and I think because it was the end of the day (I got there just about half an hour before closing), they didn't have coins to give me change, so the proprietor just handed me back almost a full extra dollar and insisted it wasn't a problem. That's a small thing, but a lot of angry Yelp reviews [for other places] mention little disputes over change and payment, so - here is an example of a very positive interaction. The food is really good! The only thing is that the menu says the gomen is "spinach" but it's much curlier than the spinach of my experience, but it's still Very good. I can't speak to the dine-in experience, b/c I haven't had one, but this place is really perfectly set up for take-out, and the value you're getting is very high for the price. More...

An enchanting little place. Most customers buy their food to go, or order their food to be delivered. If you decide to eat there, you must wash your hands first. Because the food is eaten by hand, much like Mexican food where you eat it with pieces of tortilla. But the Ethiopian bread they use is unique, being made of a grain called teff, which makes a slightly sour thin bread after 4 days of fermentation. It is like a sourdough crepe, but used like a tortilla. A place to definitely try once, at least. I found it enjoyable, as I said, enchanting, and I definitely will return. More...

I stopped in here today and sampled the food and atmosphere. The owner (Tina, obviously) is one of the sweetest people I've ever met. The restaurant is small and cozy and eclectically decorated. The food - now, I've never really eaten Ethiopian food. Tina had to kind of give me a quick instruction on it. She put the plate down and my first instinct was to take a photo (and now I wish I had) - it was beautiful. She explained that she makes her own bread - it's a special sort of bread that's almost like a cross between pancake and a European fluffy/spongy crumpet. Next to it is a smaller plate filled with sauce and meat and vegetables. It looked a little messy, so I looked around for silverware. Silver-where? What? No silverware? I'm sure she had some, but she said I should eat with my fingers and told me how it works - using the bread to scoop up the meat and sauce. I had a bite of spicy chicken - OMG so good! Then I tried the ground beef - also OMG amazing!I took some home for my girlfriend who didn't even wait until I got inside the house - she met me in the garage and scarfed down a bunch of it. She also thought it was delicious. We're definitely going to have dinner here soon. I noticed a bunch of low reviews here and for the most part they are from people who didn't actually eat there or that bought an online coupon deal. I'm not going to bad mouth any daily deal site (sometimes they can help put a business on the map), but I can tell you that for a small business like this, it can be financially devastating doing a coupon or daily deal like this. Restaurant owners are asked to sell something for half price and then only get to keep half of that. It's safe to assume they lose money every time they do one. Also, they don't see any money from it for months. Also, the coupon customers often only show up someplace when there's a coupon involved. Restaurant owners aren't coached on how to get these customers to come back in to pay full price. And then to try to use an expired coupon and trash a tiny independent restaurant online when they won't accept it anymore - that's even more bad news for the restaurant owner. It just doesn't seem fair. I don't know. It seems like the opposite of supporting local to me. This restaurant is cute and charming and the owner is awesome. The food is incredible, and I'm a super picky eater who won't eat anything. I'm a fan of Ethiopian now. Can't wait to go back. More...

Tina's Ethiopian Great As Usual. I & husband Paul made our last visit at Tina's for the season yesterday at 4:30pm. (We'll be off to Ontario at the end of the month to spend the next 6 there, Paul's legal residence, mine is here in AZ. ) A vegetarian and a meat combination are our favorite since we like everything and just don't want to pick only one. No matter what Tina puts together, it tastes great. The salad was a little different this time - a nice treat. Enough spice in everything to tickle our tongues, and always authentic injera - not that "fake" stuff we've been served in other Ethiopian restaurants both in AZ and MI. We never stuff ourselves no matter where we eat, but w/ Tina's food we definitely look forward to eating the leftovers we take away with us. I even make a separate casserole using the leftover injera (yesterday's is currently in the freezer for next week. Yum...:) I don't know for sure is behind "pinktux's" very negative review from Feb 18 2012, but I am somewhat suspicious that s/he tried to use an expired "Groupon", got told no (a business owner gets NO reimbursement for an expired coupon of any type) and decided to take some sort of revenge. Why not use a real name and photo if s/he had a legitimate complaint. What was written is not at all the way things go at Tina's. Both her children are very pleasant and "help out" when they are there (after school). And Tina is among the most friendly and willing to please restaurant owner I and Paul have encountered - and we've dealt with many. We look forward to our return to AZ in early November since that means we can enjoy Tina's again. She puts out a food spread as good as that of Ethiopian House in Toronto (where I & Paul have enjoyed many a fine meal). And the plus is that Tina actually talks with her customers, even if it's just for a few minutes if she's very busy. -----10 Nov, 2011----- Best Ethiopian Food In AZ. I and husband Paul Wakfer have been longtime customers of Tina's - from the early days of her original location on Arizona Blvd in Chandler. We are very pleased that her new cafe is open for business and that all her delicious cooking has lost none of its quality. We are also longtime enjoyers of Ethiopian cooking and know what good traditional injera should taste like - sour - something that is often not being done at many supposedly traditional Ethiopian restaurants not just in Arizona but in other parts of the US. (My first introduction to this ethnic food was in Toronto that has a large Ethiopian community and many restaurants.) Other times we've had both a combo meat and vegetarian watt platter, but this evening we went with just the vegetarian watt platter and hot tea. Great! While this location is smaller than Tina's original and has mostly booths and tables, she has retained a traditional seating corner with the straw woven two-piece tabletop (mesob), at which we prefer to eat when such is available. The Ethiopian music videos on Tina's wide screen wall plasma screen are very entertaining, only in need of English subtitles. However if Tina is available, she's happy to translate what you can't figure out for yourself of the songs' stories :) We'll be back again on one of our weekly shopping trips from Casa Grande during our 6 months each year in central Arizona (the other 6 in Ontario Canada). Where to start...First of all, this place is very small.  I highly recommend you make a reservation, as there isn't much room for seating, and Tina makes all the food herself, so once it's gone, there is no more for the day.  MAKE A RESERVATION.Secondly, this is a very mom and pop establishment, don't expect anything fancy.  It's pretty spartan and humbly decorated with the obligatory worn posters of Ethiopia.Thirdly, do not expect to eat and run here.  Tina is an absolute hoot.  Not only extremely friendly, she is also extremely talkative.  She is one of those types of people that is so nice and chatty that you hate to have to say "Our kids were supposed to be in bed a half an hour ago."Speaking of kids, the great thing about this place is that if your kids aren't into Ethiopian fare just yet, she has the goods to keep kids happy:  Corn dogs and mac and cheese. If you have never had Ethiopian, be prepared to not have any silverware on the table.  While silverware is available on request, it is Ethiopian culture to eat with your hands.  All meals are served with rolls of enjera, an unleavened bread that has a slightly sour taste.  You basically tear a piece of bread off the roll and then use it to grab your food.  If the kiddos are into the ethnic food, they'll love eating with their hands!Onto the food...  The food here is excellent.  As mentioned earlier, Tina makes everything from scratch, and with lots of love, and it shows.  The menu is pretty limited, but what is on the menu is all delicious.  There are meat and vegetarian entrees, and go from not spicy at all to nose running spicy.  If you like spicy try the beef tibbs.  She also has a house salad that is excellent!  There are no appetizers, no expensive dessert menu.  All the dinner entrees are under $7, and the house watt combo is about $12, and is a lot of food, probably more food than most people can eat.  Still hungry?  Never fear, Tina is always there to give you seconds. Beware, Tina is a food pusher.  She is not happy unless you have to be rolled out of there on a dolly.  IF YOU LEAVE THERE ANYTHING OTHER THAN STUFFED BEYOND IMAGINATION IT IS YOUR OWN FAULT. Lastly, if Tina is your server, don't even think about tipping.  She flat out refuses tips, and will run after you if you leave money on the table.Tina's Ethiopian Cafe isn't a restaurant, it's an experience!ALSO:  This restaurant is now located at the Southwest corner of Cooper (Stapley) and Elliot next to Blew Smoke cigar shop More...

We set out to order the combo plate for two and Tina told us, no one order would be fine for lunch :) She was correct it was a lot of food.  It was delicious and well prepared. Tina chatted with us for a while and that was fun. We'll return. More...

Watt Watt! Try it! You'll like it!. Mmmmm! Delish! I can't explain what the flavors are like since the spices are unique, but the look of the plates are closest to Indian presentation - the enjera is more of a very mild sourdough and soft and thick rather than the thinness of naan and the flavors are totally different, but it is primarily vegetarian and the meat dishes are small pieces of meat in sauce. We had Beef Watt, Beef Tibbs and Potato Watt. I want to try the Chicken Watt and Spinach Watt next time. Can I get a Watt Watt? :) The salad was unlike any I've ever had. It was GREAT! Very bright - lemony, maybe? The Beef Watt and Salad went well together - hot and cold! The Ethiopian Hot Tea was also awesome! Again, I can't say how it tastes as it's unique! But try it, you'll like it! Two out of three of our party liked everything, but the third person was 12, so pizza is more his bag. Tina is awesome! Open, friendly, caring and a great cook! She was very welcoming and concerned about my boy liking her food and bringing us more when my husband loved it and worrying about what she could bring my boy to have something for him to eat, but I told her not to worry about it - he got to try it and he will come back to try something else. We fed him pizza later. :) I think the place has a great atmosphere - Ethiopian Posters, a TV playing Ethiopian Dance and Song video, Ethiopian books on my table - one written in Ethiopian and a guide to Ethiopia written in English. Very cool. It's a small, intimate space with booth seating and a very cute corner with comfy looking seats. We chatted with the couple next to us. It is a quirky place in that there is no silverware (you use the bread) and no napkins and she was out of chicken, but that all just combines to make it a fun, unique experience. :) Go in with a chillax, laid back attitude and you will have a rockin time, learn something and eat some great food! :) More...
