Loved this place!We were in Monterey for the evening for a show at the Golden State Theatre, and Epsilon was right around the corner and easily walkable to the theatre, so you can park just once. The food was delicious (especially the Avgolemono soup and the baklava dessert, both of which are MUST tries!), and the service was extremely warm, attentive and friendly.  The owner walks around and makes sure you have all of your questions answered and are enjoying your meal.They know when the shows begin at the theatre and are sure to serve you in a timely fashion so you are in your seats in plenty of time.We had a wonderful start to the evening and Epsilon and will surely be back. I love this place! It's been a staple in downtown Monterey for a long time. The service is super friendly, the food is amazing, the atmosphere is quaint.  Makes me feel like I'm in a little cafe in Greece, frescos on the wall, Greek music playing....I usually get the Gyro- which is SO big I have enough for dinner!Hubby had the chicken version of the Gyro. Both came with rice, salad, beans and lentils!!! All for less than $20 per person.You can't beat it. So many good things on the menu. What a fantastic dining experience. When our group of six entered the restaurant, we were met by a very friendly person by the name of Chris. Come to find out, he was the owner. After we were seated, we asked Chris for some suggestions for a meal. Chris told us, these are my family recipes, that have been passed down through generations. So, I think everything is good. He then gave us his recommendations. And, he was absolutely spot on.Our meal was incredible. Our group started with avgolemono soup and spanakopita as our appetizers. We've been coming here since it first opened under Chris' uncle Petros. All these years later, sadly last night was hopefully a one off. The Patitsio was burnt on top, the lamb chops were horribly charred, and the baklava was a wet mess. I'm really hoping it was either a new cook, or a bad night, because the next best place is San Jose! Worse than that, and another first, the waitress stood at our table waiting for us to write in a tip, and kept asking if we're done yet.  Please get it together guys. Oof. I had wanted to try Epsilon for a long time. Last time we were in town, they were closed. This time we made a reservation and got in pretty early, before 6pm. There are no Greek restaurants where I live, and vanishingly few in California in general, so I was really excited to go. Unfortunately the food was not good here. The ambiance is lovely, I like the decor and the fairy lights and nice touches with the table ware. It was really chilly inside, though. There were two servers working and they were doing a great job. As it got busier I could see them getting stretched. We started with the saganaki appetizer, which is a fried kasseri cheese. Good portion, though it is still over $15. They add $3 for a big basket of pita bread; including one pita in the price would've been better as a couple. It was good, similar to fried halloumi. They recommended the bread which helped with the grease but I felt like it could use something more, like a little jam or sauce or herbs to vary the flavors.We also got dolmadakia, which were pretty much store bought quality and served straight out of the fridge.  The entrées came with a Greek salad, which was fine. The main courses were terrible. I got the pastitso, which can be hit and miss since it's always premade but I hadn't had it for years so I really wanted to try it. It looked and tasted like it had been sitting for some time. Virtually no tomato sauce, the small amount of red leaked onto the plate. The meat was really dry in spots and weirdly seasoned, it tasted mostly of cinnamon. The bechamel on top was overcooked to an egg white consistency and it was unevenly heated. Not warm enough. The pilaf also tasted of cinnamon and had too much random stuff (like raisins) in it.My husband ordered the leg of lamb, which is apparently their speciality. He said it was tough and also oddly seasoned. He didn't even touch the pilaf.I really hope they were just having an off night... But I really wouldn't risk it again without a personal recommendation. It's been too long, Epsilon! I wanted a special place for the first birthday celebration in two years (due to SIP) and Epsilon was the perfect choice. Why? Because of the delicious and healthy food choices and the personal service. We were treated as friends and as my guests straggled in, we shared the Tzatziki and hummus appetizer. Then we all ordered and it was fun. I kept switching spots to visit with everyone in the party. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered, from chicken kababs to moussaka to the lamb. I loved my sand dabs, which I added to a delicious Greek salad. I have been coming here for years and the servers and the owner know me and treat us like old friends. That's part of what made the evening so special. After a pandemic, to come together with friends and celebrate again is a treat. To do it with delicious food is even better. But when you're treated with respect, and feel they value you being there, that's called a memorable birthday celebration. What really makes it special though is that Epsilon had closed down --- permanently. The pandemic was a tough struggle for many local venues and Epsilon was one of them. Out of the blue, they decided to do a GoFundMe and the community came through and they're back!And that's how you can describe the whole experience: a staff who treat their customers like members of a community. We got the:* gyro appetizer (comes with tomato, onions and the white sauce)* grilled chicken thigh platter * lamb platter + shrimp for $10 extraThe platters come with rice, bean salad, green salad, and lentils. Super delicious food and a very friendly and accommodating staff and owner. My husband and I ordered a take-out dinner consisting of the gyros salad and gyros plate. Both meals were prepared quickly, beautifully presented, perfectly portioned (my husband has a hearty appetite and had some food left over for lunch the next day) and, most importantly, very tasty! This is the place to go for authentic Greek food. I'm planning on eating in the restaurant next time. The interior of the restaurant is so charming with murals painted on the walls, tastefully set tables and festive lighting. A must go restaurant when in the downtown Monterey area! More...

Well.... The staff was excellent and attentive.  The hummus was the best I've ever had!  Unfortunately the chicken kabob was so tough I was chewing on one piece forever.  The flavor was bold... too much lemon.  My partner had the eggplant which was flavorful.  The plate presentation was not so appealing.  I dined here many years ago and had such a good experience.  The food was obviously reheated this time around.  This is a small mom and pop establishment with so much potential.  FYI.... The garlic dip brought to the table was really good but when the server tells us the bread is old and was to be thrown out by the restaurants at the wharf ... not appetizing at all.   Patrons don't need to know this. Another fabulous dinner at Epsilon last night! Perfection from start to finish. Chris and his staff (special shout out to Patty) serve up hospitality that makes everyone feel like treasured guests. The atmosphere is so warm and inviting. Twinkling lights, shiny glasses, roses, and music. Our party of 4 enjoyed dolmathes, lamb chops, and a special marinated skewered chicken. All cooked perfectly and served with a beautiful Greek red wine. The baklava is some of the best you will find anywhere. The perfect ratio of nuts, filo, and sugar/honey syrup.To make the evening better, a couple of young men from Berlin stopped in and asked if they could play for the customers. They played great folk music on the guitar and violin. So impromptu and yet so perfect! We all enjoyed the entertainment so much we got them to play more for us. What a perfect night! Thank you Chris. We are so very glad you are here to make a great dining experience available to the lucky folks in Monterey!Update from 7/30/21 visit:The perfect vegan or vegetarian meal? YES!!The owner, Chris Hix, made this beautiful platter of yummy greens, rice, and various beans, along with meatless dolmathes and skordia. I was so looking forward to this restaurant after reading all the wonderful Yelp reviews. But it did not live up to my expectations at all. The owner/hostess/server told us that it might be a bit of a wait because everything "was fresh." Well isn't that what you expect from a fine dining experience with up scale prices? Fresh food? She used the same line in taking other customers orders as well. I have never heard that line used in my 62 years of eating out. I came to suspect after waiting more than 45 minutes and still no food that the real story was only one cook working and too many customers even though we were the second table in the restaurant after it opened for the day. This was the worst service that I have ever had. We waited for OVER AN HOUR AND A HALF for our food, which we never got. Our waiter kept telling us that our food was five minutes, then ten minutes, then five minutes. We watched table after table get food before us, even though we were the first table to sit down. Our waiter was awful and we watched her belittle a brand new teen waiter the entire time. It was uncomfortable watching her shoo him away when he was trying to learn. It came off as rude and unprofessional. Once we finally got our food, which was correct, the waiter rushed over and took our food away and gave it to another table who came after us. This blew Covid precautions to the wind and was so inappropriate, so we left. I do not recommend this place and someone needs to speak to this waiter on how to treat her customers and staff. The food is delicious, the portions are huuuuge. You definitely get your money's worth! Greek salad is perfectly dressed, perfect amount of dressing, feta cheese, and red onion. The use of lemon is gentle so it's not overwhelming, but enough to give the perfect hit of acid. Gyro and chicken kebabs were out of this world! Tzatziki sauce is some of the best I've ever had. Beautiful ambiance, they give you time and space to check out the menu. I had a Greek salad that was out of this world. The perfect amount of feta cheese in every bite. I ordered grilled chicken with rice and white beans. You could tell the chicken had been seasoned and marinated with delightful Mediterranean seasoning. Went here for my first time a few months ago and since I'm ordering takeout tonight it reminded me that I need to review! BEST house salad I've ever had, the bean salad is also amazing, lamb shanks were juicy &amp ; cooked perfectly. Everything is so clearly made in house from scratch- I used to work at a Mediterranean restaurant and have eaten at many over the years but this is hands down the best I've ever had. We came back RIGHT after they reopened and on a weekday were the only ones inside for an early dinner- our server has worked there for years and years (I can't remember her name but she was truly the best,) and she made the experience all the better. Just a fun, casual place with good food. It's not huge, but has some indoor and outdoor seating. The staff was friendly and they even seemed to know some of the customers. The portions are large and I was glad they didn't skimp on the salad. I had the spicy taskebab which wasn't particularly hot, but well-flavored. Have you ever been to Athens, Greece? If you have, then get ready to savor the taste and scents all over again at Epsilon. If you haven't, get some insight as to what your culinary experience will be when you do visit. This is the best Greek restaurant this side of Athens. My guy and I were looking forward to trying this restaurant on our weekend away. We went to Athens in 2018 and have never found a Greek restaurant stateside, that has even similar food. Not so here! We each started with the lemon/chicken/rice soup. FANTASTIC! The lemony broth was outstanding and something to savor. Next up, I had a chicken souvlaki wrap. My gosh, the pita was homemade and fabulous! There was so much grilled chicken that was very juicy and tasty. It was wrapped with tomato, onion, lettuce and tsatsiki. It was a taste sensation. The platter came with rice, lentils and white beans, and Greek salad. Very hearty portion! My guy had the chicken kabob and that too had the same accompaniments. He loved it! The woman who was our waitress was the owner and she was kind, informative, and a nice person to chat with. She talked me into the Baklava, and though I was stuffed, I had to try it. So buttery and loaded with cinnamon and nuts. Died and went to heaven!! I will go to this restaurant whenever I'm in town and will think about making the 2.5 hour drive just to dine here! KUDOS!!!
