Started with gazpacho and flash fried avocado, also ordered the potatoes, steak skewers and beets. YUM! Can't wait to go back. Also loved that there were GF options. More...

We have eaten at El Farol Restaurant a few times since it changed ownership a while back and underwent major remodeling. That was a big improvement. The food is luscious -- from having a full meal, to doing a selection of tapas. I would normally rate it a 5 star, except for two things: 1) this time we arrived at 7:30, but the band in the bar started playing not long afterwards. They were too loud in the adjacent dining area, and we couldn't hear the conversation of our guests. One of our guests is an ex-band member from LA and commented that if the band is going to be that loud, they need to be really crisp. This one couldn't justify its volume. 2) One of us ordered a vodka martini, but it had way too much vermouth, and it didn't have the requisite layer of ice crystals that prove that the vodka is properly chilled. The second martini didn't have ice crystals either. We thought that bartender needed a lesson on how to make them. Nevertheless, the vodka had the desired effect, and if we could have conversed with our dinner guests it would have been a more stellar experience. Interestingly, the owner was there so apparently approves of the sound level. I'd say, if you want to hear conversation, go long before the band starts. More...

Wow. We had dinner and enjoyed the live Flamenco show.  It was really a special evening. The paella was delish. Gluten and dairy free options! !  Lovely ambiance.  And it turns into a dance club with party music later in The evening.  Vanilla Pop played on the Friday night we were there.  You won't be disappointed!!! At the end of Canyon Rd. This Spanish restaurant has character. We went for the Spanish dance show on a Sunday night. The show was incredible with 2 females one male show plus a singer and a Spanish guitar player, they were so good that it felt as dancers from Sevilla. The place is  not that big so they were dancing literally in front of you. The Singer had a beautiful gypsy voice and the classics flamenco guitarrista played a couple solos with huge talent.  My husband and I had a tapas style dinner, my favorite, the crockets and the Fabada soup. They had a good Spanish wine list.  I was able to ordered  a Rioja wine. More...

This five star review is for the rousing bar at El Farol when a rock and roll band is playing.  Filled with locals, tourists, men, women, young, old, Anglo, Latin; it doesn't matter.  Everybody rocks out, with a non judgmental New Mexican vibe.  I went two nights in a row, after dinner, and burned off a bunch of calories.  Fortunately, my place was a half a block away on Canyon Road, and I staggered off at closing time with a big grin on my face, feeling 20 years younger. Venue: I never went inside, so I can't comment on the interior, but the patio was nice and the servers and other wait staff were extremely friendly and hospitable. They checked in frequently and made sure to keep the waters full and the cocktails coming. There is a pay lot across the street and some very limited parking on Canyon Road.Vittles: Everything our table has was amazing, which included the Branzino and chicken entrees and the brussel sprouts, fritters, avocado, and potato tapas. Everything was fresh and flavorful and the servings were ample. They also have a decent wine list and a few local beers. Dessert looked good but we passed as we were all full from the main course.Verdict: I am not sure when I'll be back in Santa Fe. If I am, I would be likely to return. More...

Our first and favorite dining experience in Santa Fe.I helped my parents move into a condo near Canyon Road.  After a 10 hour drive and unpacking we were tired and hungry. We walked up to El Farol and ordered 3/4 of the menu to go.  We had a drink at the bar and realized we didn't now where the silverware was!The staff let us borrow some flatware for the night.  We had arguably the best "fine dining" experience on cardboard boxes and randomly placed furniture anywhere! As non-native New Mexicans El Farol quickly became our family tradition, our home away from home, and our go to for any out of town guests to visit. Even though I'm cheap (and so therefore bang-for-buck is a big deal for me) and our 3 person meal ran $290, I'm going to give 5 stars. This is a beautiful Canyon Road setting in which to eat, and on Friday night it's got your fair share of stylish beautiful rich people. I had their signature paella ($30): very large portion, generous with meat, though sadly it came out in nonstick pan (so no soccarat, the burnt rice that simply makes a paella). I'm going to kick my review up a notch due to the flamenco show (a $25 add-on that's worth every penny), with three dancers a singer and a guitarist on a very intimate stage. They injected a lot of intensity into that space, and the restaurant seems to have the logistics of that sort of dinner show down pat, which is no small thing. This is a 4-star meal for the dinner alone, but if you get to do the flamenco show, do it and you'll get a memorable experience. More...

I do not understand the 3 stars on this place.  It's fantastic!  We went for the Flamenco show on Saturday night and our party could not stop raving about the food!  And the show was so fun!  My favorite of the night was a vegetarian paella that I could eat every day of my life and be a very happy woman.  The serving was huge and if I wasn't off to a hotel that night, I would have made 2 more meals out of it.  Perfectly spiced, perfectly cooked.  Simply amazing.  Service was also exceptional.  Working to get everyone served and happy before the show is a challenge and they handle it beautifully.  We wanted to stay for the later show on the other side of the bar, but had kiddos with us so I look forward to coming back for that experience.  We understand through residents of Santa Fe that the bar has come under some fire from it's neighbors for loudness etc. (which I find ridiculous since the bar was there long before the houses were)  They now have to close earlier than they used to and I'm sure that irritates some patrons.  I'd hate to think that is what is keeping the star rating down!  I look forward to coming back next time I am in Santa Fe.
