Excellent if I had to sum it up in one word. My wife and I arrived a little early (before opening), and were invited to wait at the bar. We were greeted by a bartender that knew about every aspect of the restaurant. We found out he also spends time in the kitchen helping with cooking, so he had incredible knowledge of the menu. Our waiter also explained the menu in great detail. Rarely have I had such an informed decision in what I ordered.This is a place everyone should try. The history...the building (hidden gem)...everything.There were a couple of things that kept the experience from being perfect, but wouldn't keep us from dining there again. 1) We were seated in a small dining room. It filled up quickly, and became very loud. My research made me believe the setting would be a little more intimate. I felt like we were dining with everybody in the room. The problem was with me, and my expectations . It wouldn't keep me from easily choosing to return.2) The booths were incredibly small. I would absolutely recommend Downtown Grill! My husband and I went for our wedding anniversary and Erin took such good care of us! I was very surprised that mainstream domestic beer was not served (aka, Miller Lite). On top of that, the alternative (Michelob Ultra) had not been near the cooler prior to our arrival, plus they only had 6 total in the building. Otherwise, the service was great and the food was outstanding. I was a little embarrassed after bragging so much to my friends about how great Downtown Grill is.... We had THEE BEST experience at Downtown Grill. My husband and I took 3 clients and none of us had been there before and we were all from out of town, so I was a bit apprehensive. Our server, Sarah, was outstanding, describing in great detail each menu item. She was very engaged and passionate about the food. We had 3 appetizers that were all fabulous and we all enjoyed our meal as well. All of us travel extensively and were blown away by the quality of the food and service. I can't wait to go back!! Service was excellent, however, we were there when they had just opened and were the only customers. Food was good but overpriced for the quality. One of the customers or perhaps the owner was sitting at the bar when we were shown our table. He was smoking a cigarette. The appetizer, the chartreuse board, was very good. Our table ordered 2 of the steak specials. They were very expensive, 52. 00 , and the steak was very average. The food presentation for the dinner was very poor. The sides came in small bowls, served like SnS cafeteria. The wine selection by the glass was very limited. Also, the cigar smoking in the front of the restaurant did not ventilate out very well. The dining area appeared hazy from smoke. The desserts , again, were average. My favorite restaurant when travel takes me to Macon. This trip I had my boss with me and we had travel delays that were getting there just when the kitchen was scheduled to close. We talked to them on the phone about ordering from the car while we parked so they could close the kitchen but they said just park and come in and all would be fine. Downtown Grill is one of the premier places to eat in Macon. It is located in an old building in an ally in downtown. One negative fact about the place is that it is also a whiskey/cigar bar at the front of the restaurant and you have to walk through that to get to your table. However, once you reach your table you cannot smell anything from that area. The food is very high scale and the service is exemplary. We only go here for special occasions due to the expense but if you are from out of town and want to experience some of the best Macon has to offer definitely give the Downtown Grill a try. More...

I was celebrating a promotion with a friend! The smell from the cigar bar was overpowering in the front of the restaurant, but the dining area was much further back, which was great. The overall smell was off a vintage building and took a little adjusting to, but after that everything was great. Our waitress was fabulous, very attentive. We both wanted the lamb chops and were disappointed to find they were out of those. We settled on other entrees, the duck and the trout, and both were good. We had moscato with our meal, which unfortunately was ineligible for the Wine Wednesday special due to the smaller sized bottle. It was quite tasty though. Great food with a wonderful atmosphere! Our waiter was Wonderful, and very knowledgeable about the menu as well as the specials.
