About

Dog Sense Dog Training brings a new approach to communication between you and your best friend. Our canine companions are amazing creatures, however, they speak a very different language than us humans. Dogs do not communicate with words or sentences so, in order to help them understand what is expected of them, WE need to speak THEIR language.

Pam of Dog Sense is truly exceptional! There are so many things I love about her style, knowledge and skills, I could easily fill the maximum word allowance in Yelp. I can sum it up to say that Pam makes training fun, easy and successful, for the dogs AND the humans. I recently worked with her on a dog I was helping to train for someone else (sometimes we need to team up on hard cases, ya know). Upon our first session at the Pack Walk offered by Pam, I couldn't even get the dog out of the car because he was going bonkers barking and lunging at the dogs in the distance. By the end of the very first session, my trainee was able to be up with the other dogs, sitting quietly. By the end of the third session, he performed the entire course in silence and ease. Uh... how was that even possible?!  I couldn't agree more with the other great reviews here. We all have special gifts and when someone aligns with their true purpose in this world, it is VERY obvious. There is no doubt this is the case with Pam Chandler. Have one session with her and you'll know exactly what I mean. More...

Oh my goodness!!! I can't say enough about Pam!!! My puppies had become impossible to manage with their barking at dogs and people and craziness on leash. Pam came by for a home assessment and taught me more in an hour than I learned in 6 weeks of puppy classes. I was at a point where I was considering giving them up for adoption it had gotten so bad. I am so grateful to her. Plus she offers affordable pack walks where you can take your dogs and walk with other dogs and their owners to teach them real world skills. Thank you Pam! More...

Wow where do I start.. Miss Pam is so awesome! Her knowledge of the k9 psyche is incredible! Her calm and Patient demeanor with dogs is just incredible to watch.  We started with our large pup in the group K9 good citizen course and now have in home training with Pam for tuneup's. I personally recommend Dog Sense training for all age dogs. It's so worth the peace of mind. More...

Absolutely 5 stars for Pam! From the moment I spoke live to her on the phone I knew just how dedicated Pam was to her job. She called me back immodestly with advice right away and we set up an in house appointment. Pam came into our home and immediately recognized our needs with a new puppy and three young kids. She has a very reasonable approach and tailors a schedule to your dog and family. A lot of other trainers I hear are too hard-core and appear more like baby sleep trainers! My whole family got so much out of the hour and a half we spoke to Pam and I continue to work with her on getting my little puppy potty trained and into our family routine! Thank you! More...

I am so thankful for Pam! I have a 2 1/2 year old Rottie by the name of Captain America. At about 1 1/2 years old he became very reactive around other dogs when on walk or dogs passing by. A 90lb Rottie can look very intimidating and scary to most when he is lunging and growling!!!The trainer I had taken Captain to since he was a small puppy told me I was too late, this is was how he was going to be because I wasn't tougher at correcting him when he was younger, I was heart broken but didn't give up. Thankfully I found Pam!!! She responded right away when I reached out.We did one on on training, enrolled Captain in her good citizen class, and Sunday pack walks in Encinitas (see her website for times). The past couple of Sundays Captain has weaved in the circle with other dogs without reaction. Pam did the happy dance and I feel like the worlds proudest Dog Mama ever!!Pam's patience, confidence and training tactics are second to none!!Thank you!!!! More...

We have a 110 pound Akita, Kaiden. He is a 16 month old adolescent. He is as sweet as can be but was a little reactive around other dogs and needed much work with walking on a leash. Pam has been wonderful. Kaiden loves her, turns "inside out" when he sees her. We love her and what she has taught us about our "baby." Huge improvements have occurred since working with her. We go to as many Pack Walks as possible as well as attended her 5 week Adolescent training. She is wonderful ... patient, always supportive and encouraging. My favorite part of her sessions is how much we have learned about Kaiden's behavior.  She has done a great job teaching us how we should behave in order for him to be more obedient. Simply put .... she is a miracle trainer. We feel so fortunate to have connected with her. More...

I have taken one puppy class, and two regular classes and a few pack walks with Pam. They are all excellent classes. With her classes and pack walks, you never feel like you're wasting money or time with Pam. Her classes are worth every penny. You will learn so much and gain a tremendous amount of confidence with your dog. Any behavioral issues that you may have with your dog, Pam will identify it, tell you why your dog is doing it and how to correct it, all with positive reinforcement. She really is amazing. Very knowledgeable. And she is super nice too. Her classes are always fun. (Even if you're the one with the "naughty dog" like me) Go book a class with her!! :) More...

If you are looking for a dog trainer that is not only great with dogs, but people too, look no further.Pamela Chandler and her Dog Sense dog training are real miracle workers.  I have had a fair amount of experience in the dog and rescue community of San Diego, and I can't tell you how many times I have heard people exclaim "OMG, I worked with another trainer, or took my dog to this course and we weren't able to accomplish half the things Pam has done with us in just our first session."I think the "magic-ingredient" is that Pam is so keenly aware of both how the dog AND owner are reacting to a situation based on their body language and non-verbal cues.   From that information, Pam is then able to help guide the owner to communicate with their dog in a way that the dog understands and responds well to.Pam's approach is definitely one of gentle, and persistent, positive reinforcement.  She clearly loves her job and brings a lot of passion and joy to her work which I think both dogs and their owners feel instantly. One of the most impressive things I have seen Pam do, is her leash work with dogs.   In a matter of minutes she is able to take a stubborn, or agitated dog, and simply by using the leash she is able to help calm the dog and redirect the dog to a desired behavior.  What is even more amazing, is that she is able to teach the dog owners how to do the same thing for themselves.I would definitely recommend speaking to Pam if you are interested in learning how to help your dog learn great behaviors and also want to learn how to get more joy out of being a doggie parent :) More...

My boxer-American bulldog mix and I have gone through 2 of Pam's classes, and we love her! Pam is knowledgeable, patient, and has excellent communication skills. She teaches many life skills/manners rather than just the basic obedience cues. Her methods are kind, extremely useful, and  build a team bond! The person-dog teams get easy to follow instructions, individual feedback, and access to ask questions. We highly recommend Dog Sense. More...

Q&As

I love helping families create a healthy relationship with their dog. I get very excited about teaching pet parents to understand their dog and, in turn, understanding their behavior. We can not correct the behavior until we understand it and create a clear plan and pathway for communication. I LOVE seeing progress and watching as families can enjoy their four legged friends that much more.

I had been working with dog's in rescue and at various shelters for years. I was adopting dog's out and placing them into new, loving homes. With each placement came a training that I was conducting. I loved it and was good at it so I worked hard to make it into my business....that is now thriving. I feel so fortunate.

I am different from other trainers in that I will teach you to work out your emotions so you can HELP your dog. I teach you to change the relationship with your dog so that they clearly see you as the leader in the home. My approach is not obedience...it is behavior modification. This is done by creating new RULES and PATTERNS in the home that will change the way the dog looks at the owner. I also discuss body language and show the owner's simple "tweaks" they can make in their regular routines that will encourage learning in their 4 legged buddy.
