This Design Within Reach store is clean and well-stocked to check out man options for mid-century modern or contemporary style furniture. As noted in some reviews, the prices are more than what you might pay at a discount or Swedish-style chain. However, the quality easily makes up the difference. This is furniture that will look and feel good in one's house for a generation or more. In particular, Bobby Valentine has been a joy to work with when purchasing furniture. I'll descibe my shopping experience for those interested.I came in with a very specific goal: to try out different Herman Miller office chairs (they're truly worth every penny) to see which would fit my body type best. My new year's resolution was to prioritize personal health, and I sit a lot for work so my doctor suggested these chairs. There's not a lot of places that have Herman Miller chairs in stock, and I definitely wanted to try them out in person to see which I liked best before purchasing one. I called ahead and told the associate I would be coming in to test the chairs. I arrived later that day, and the salesperson, Adam, had the different models ready to show and suggested a few that he thought would suit me best. Adam was fantastic- patiently showing me all the features and explaining the chairs' histories and main differences. I did not feel rushed or pushed in any way and it was a very pleasant experience. At the end I asked for a quote for the model, size, and specs I wanted and told him I would think it over. The quote came in a fancy envelope with a printout of the specs. 24 hours later I called and placed my order. About a week later the chair arrived (assembled) from their warehouse. I seriously think this is the best money I have spent in years. The only problem I have is I notice every other chair I sit in is heartbreakingly bad. I am very happy to have shopped at Design Within Reach, and it was exactly what I was hoping to get. This is a review not for the store, but for the brick wall that they have in their parking lot. We bought 6 dining chairs, outdoor furniture set, 2 small tables, blanket, standing lamp, closet, eames chair, coffee table in the last couple of years. Needless to say we are good customers. The last thing we bought was the Noguchi coffee table for 1800$ 4 months ago. A week ago our 5y old daughter leaned on it, the wooden base cracked. I contacted DWR and filed a claim. At first, we had some miscommunications and couldnt get our issues resolved (thats why i only give 4 stars) but Kate at DWR helped us out and we couldnt be more happy with how this was handled by her. I've bought pieces from DWR on multiple occasions, and everything was acceptable, though the buying process typically hit a few snags. Items go out of stock without warning, the warehouse fails to pack something, or there's an issue with the hand-off to a local delivery company, but none of these were the fault of the people.The service is refreshingly regular, following more of a hands-off European style, where the employees leave you alone to shop for the most part but will offer an opinion or answer questions if you ask. If your ego demands incessant attention and superficial reverence while you browse, this will be a different experience.For better or worse, DWR and Hive are the only game in town for this kind of product. If you want the pieces they offer, you take the experience as well. I've shopped at both; Hive's ordering process is a bit better, but its showroom is pitiful by comparison.DWR's primary disadvantage is a comical lack of information regarding order status and delivery. In a time where I can order a tube of toothpaste from Amazon and receive laser-guided targeting on its location, it's inexcusably bizarre that thousands of dollars of furniture sails through an opaque æther to coalesce on a local delivery truck in a few weeks. I know much of this is due to the logistics backend, suppliers, and delivery services outside their control, but it's still an unsatisfying experience. However, the employees always told me everything they knew, even though that knowledge was often a confirmation of unknowing.Interestingly, I've even had some of the salespeople straight-up tell me why some of my design thoughts were misguided/bland/etc when I floated an idea to them. In a time when stores demand salespeople disgorge groundless adulation about every single one of the customer's selections, it's attractive to have someone refute your idea if they believe it isn't going to achieve what you imagine. This approach indicates that the employees have real opinions and ideas about design and decor, not just smiling, agreeable idiots selling generic products.The quality of the furniture is excellent. I've had no service-related issues, and every time I've had an unusual request, order, or problem, the employees accommodated me as best they could. More...

Very nice place with above average furniture with mega high prices unless you catch them on sale. I was here shopping for Herman Miller chairs and Lilly was helpful! She showed me how each chair works and gave me a good amount of fabric samples. Customer service is top notch! I like how design within reach can order custom fabrics (within their inventory). They have more selection than the ones at the Herman Miller website. Again, watch out for their sale. They also have a movers' sale if you know what that is, just ask them about it. More...

UPDATE: they're reasonable. thanks for taking care of the issue.Went to the store to look at beds. The person on the floor encouraged us to buy a $6,000 bed and return it without hassle if we didn't like it with the first couple of days (like room and board does! ). The whole sales process moved rather quickly in under 15 minutes. They swiped my card and didn't give me a receipt or anything. The bed arrives a few weeks later with a broken drawer. We find that it didn't fit the space either and was just a lousy purchase. Upon calling to return we learned that the return was in fact $800+. To add to the confusion, the person that sold us the bed was not in fact a sales person. They were supposed to hand off us to someone else for that. Please be careful buying things from this outfit. The staff is pretty eager to earn their commission and will throw you under the bus if need be. More...

Literally the name is Design Within Reach, when really, you can technically reach it but the $$$ makes it you can't touch it. Jokes aside, the place is clean, filled with a lot of famous mid century pieces. The price for original items are fair.The staff are friendly enough, but you know that they kind of judge you from top to bottom as you come in to the store. You do get little Nestle bottled water, and last time I went there the power shut off XDThey also will follow you around a little bit (i don't like it when people hover).BUT overall this place is nice hahaha More...

UPDATE - Great news! The DWR team reached out to me this morning and provided some very reasonable and honestly super nice options to resolve the issue. They were professional and whatever roadblocks existed a day ago seem to be cleared to resolve an unfortunate situation. THANK YOU DWR SF! I am now back to being a big fan. ORIGINAL REVIEW from Jan 18, 2017 - So the sales team screwed up and double sold me a bed. Not only did they take 3 days to inform me, but they were also aware that there was an international move being set up around this bed. When I told them that this was unacceptable, their customer service response was a pathetic, instead they tried to profit off of their mistake and the area manager didn't even bother to engage. I was a first time DWR customer looking for barstools and was fortunate to have been assisted by Scott MacLaren. I had a specific color and style in mind, and Scott was able to help me find the perfect match well within our budget. These stools were for commercial use so they needed to be both sturdy and durable. Scott quickly checked the specifications of the selected chairs and found them to meet our requirements. Scott has an extensive knowledge of the DWR product line and an obvious passion for design. He closely tracked our order and kept us updated on the status of our shipment. I have had a love hate relationship with DWR. When I bought my first condo I saved up and bought several pieces there. I had a great experience. Fast forward many years later I've had spotty service. We bought a $1200 chair from the Palo Alto store and after the sale we never even got a tracking number - we kept calling and they we rude about it. I was never shopping here again till we meet Scott at the SF store.We came in by chance fell in love with an amazing patio set that he said we could get in time for a party we were throwing. He was great. Scott made sure he requested and called ahead of time so shipping and delivery knew we had a deadline.I would still love to see the customer service improve overall at DWR, but I love the furniture and now we have a competent good sales person to help us. I've been a fan of DWR for a long time because the quality of furniture is excellent and the design/layout of the stores have always been an inspiration. This review isn't about that. I've had a Nelson Bubble lamp in storage for the last several years because I haven't had a place to install it. FFWD to now--I moved into a new house and now have a place for it. Great! Except that I didn't realize when I pulled it down from the old house I didn't take the bracket that attaches the canopy of the lamp to the electrical box. After several trips to various hardware stores, it became obvious this tiny little bracket was euro-sized and nobody carried anything close. So I called DWR for help and Scott MacLaren answered the call. After an enormous amount of research and discourse, the part was identified, located and ordered. Scott was knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and extremely responsive throughout this process. My takeaway here is that no matter how great or small the purchase is, Scott puts the customer first. At this furniture store I feel like a kid in a candy store.  I go around and drool over all their stuff, its all so nice.  The furniture is all high end designer .  The furniture you see knock offs of elsewhere.    It is decidedly modern.  Though some of the pieces have become classics.Everything is well made.  The kind of stuff that will last you for years.   This isn't IKEA and nor are the prices.   The staff are always friendly and helpful.  And if you get on their mailing list they will send you notices of sales. DWR has a beautiful new showroom on Kansas where they display a lot of interesting merchandise. The star of the operation in my view is Scott MacLaren who is professional, helpful and efficient. I 'needed' a Recliner on short notice and called Scott (among other companies) to see if DWR had something in stock that I could get ASAP. They did not but he was able to get me exactly what I wanted via air freight, delivered to my house within 48 hours. He's a star. More...

The space is beautiful and well staffed. The best thing to do is to develop a relationship with someone who works there who you feel comfortable with and get on their email list. That way you can be the first to hear about any sales. I love working with Cecelia and Pat (formerly at the South End location). Cecelia really knows her stuff and is very warm and friendly. I've always felt good about my purchases from her. Other things that make it easier to shop here (if you have the budget!!): regular sales throughout the year, offers of water while you shop, and a small pkg lot behind the shop, off Trowbridge, for loading purposes. I had a great experience.   I was able to find well-designed, high-quality furniture quickly.  I appreciated the large, comfortable, spacious showroom, the higher-end (but not stratospheric) product range, and most the superb support.  10 stars for Sheva Brander, who had great ideas, had infinite patience for showing us all the options that we wanted to see, and who made the buying experience pleasant, fun, and efficient.  I have bought a few things from her, and will I am sure buy more.  She was very accommodating of all of our special requirements.  I wish I had started with Sheva before looking at all sorts of furniture stores.  We should have started and ended our furniture shopping at DWR! I want to give a great shout out for Margot S.  I purchased many items from DWR, primarily via the Scottsdale studio.  Specifically, I purchased 6 Saarein tulip chairs.  When I asked if there were pads available that would go under the chairs to prevent scraping my new hardwood floors, I was told no, without any reason.  When I got back to SF and contacted Margot at the SF DWR studio she went out of her way to inquire the Knoll people about my issue with chair pads, even though I had purchased the chairs in Scottsdale.  Anyway Margot helped me by taking multiple photos of the chair bases and measuring various parts of the chair, and emailing me the pictures.  Margot is the BOMB!!! I came across Design Within Reach online while searching for retail stores selling the Aeron Chair.  I decided to give them a call and was connected with Scott.  I am so happy I made that phone call!  I was vaguely familiar with the chair I was inquirering about, but I was an expert after talking with Scott.  He answered all of my questions and made me away of the 15% discount with free shipping that was going on.  I wanted to test the chair in person and gain some more insight face to face with him.  However, the only day I was able to make it in was a Tuesday.  Tuesday is Scott's day off.  Scott came in on his day off and gave me a call to confirm I was still going to make it in!  I didn't arrive until after 6pm (they close at 7) and he stayed until after 7pm and took care of me!  He answered every question I had, let me sit in multiple chairs, helped me with pricing and it ended with a hug. I needed to furnish an entire home when I moved from New York to Florida.I had always liked the furniture sold by DWR but the time was not right until recently for me to get serious and actually purchase the furniture I had long admired. I had a good idea of what I wanted but I needed guidance.Someone  to help me pull it all together so the furniture I bought would form a cohesive design.During my visit to the Miami store I was introduced to Carolyn Mendoza who is a studio account executive there as well as a designer.I cannot say enough about how wonderful Carolyn is to work with.She patiently listens to your ideas and makes skillful suggestions to help you realize your vision.Everything she suggested to me enhanced my ideas and worked within my budget.She is an artist herself and a beautiful person.Much more than simply a sales person she will do everything possible to assist you. She will  go above and beyond for you.For  example if you are  working with her on a design and for  some reason DWR does not sell the type of piece you are looking for she will help you get it from another source even though I am sure that is not to her financial advantage.If you need to change your order for some reason or delay shipment as I did she will patiently work out the details to make the process work for your circumstances.Carolyn will not push you to buy before you are ready and will advise you of upcoming sales to help you save money.Although DWR furniture is not inexpensive it consists of high quality pieces that should serve you well for many years .It represents the best of modern design.But without someone like Carolyn to help me through the process I never would have been able to realize the vision I had for my new home.If you need furniture for a whole house or just a single piece or an accessory to enhance what you have go see her.You will not regret it and will enjoy the store and most of all Carolyn. I, for the first time in my adult life, am outfitting my house with nice furniture.  It has been work in progress and continues to be.  I completed my living and dining areas a few years ago and then turned my focus to my bedroom.  Last year I bought a bed and a nice mattress.  This year was to be everything else.  I did my research and had things earmarked to purchase from various places BUT I started my search at DWR.  It was my first visit to their new showroom.  The new showroom is awesome.  I was greeted by several sales people however all gave me space to walk around and do my own thing.  Then one woman asked if she could help me.  And so it started.  It was so much fun.  There was no pressure to purchase anything.  When I said what I was considering she showed me everything she had in that type of thing.  I ended up buying all of my bedroom furniture that day - from DWR.  I ended up with a different look than what I went in with and what is amazing is that it will actually compliment my other furniture in my other rooms - creating an amazing flow.  It was a few weeks before the bedroom sale was to begin however the woman who was helping me worked with her manager to get me the discounts!  I then began waiting for my furniture delivery and wasn't sure of how the tracking worked.  I reached out to the email attached to the delivery confirmation and once again - was greeted by a person with the utmost in customer service.  Next week my furniture arrives.  I am getting the white glove treatment!  I cannot wait.  I know I will be greeted with people who embody this same wonderful customer service philosophy.  I feel so well taken care.  As I told both women that I have been working with - I love DWR!!!
