I am heartbroken that I feel the need to do this, but I want to warn others of my recent experience with Dakotah Hendricks photography.
I have been a client of hers on another occasion and had an absolutely wonderful experience with breathtaking photos, unfortunately that was not the case this time. On October 6th, I had a mini session with Dakotah. The intent was to take family pictures of my dogs and I along with a picture of my brother and I to use as Christmas gifts for family members. I talked to her several times about this prior to the shoot and thought we were on the same page. The shoot went well, I was really looking forward to the pictures as she had shown me a few previews on her camera. I did receive one preview photo on Instagram the night of the photoshoot which I absolutely adored.
On November 3rd, I reached out to Dakotah because I still had not received my photos and had not been given an update and I was wondering if I would still be able to expect them as Christmas gifts. I was told “So for whatever reason your memory card corrupted and I had to send it off to be recovered. I haven’t heard back yet” with not even an apology. At this point I was also told that “I did import about 6 or 7 images when I did your preview I can send over tomorrow. The issue is that the one of you & your brother is not in that batch so I’m desperately trying to have them retrieve that.” She said there was a storage issue and she chose to only import selected photos at a time. I never received these photos. I was also immediately confused because I didn’t understand why she didn’t upload the pictures of my brother and I but chose others since I told her multiple times that that photo of my brother and I was the most important one to me. I was told I was never guaranteed certain photos even though we discussed this in length.
I asked when she would expect to know about the memory card and was told she would know by the 11th. I did not hear from her until I reached out again to her on the 14th. At this point, her story changed. I was then told that the images were corrupted from “the time the image was wrote to the card by the camera body... My contracts/advertisements do not guarantee particular images, only a number of images.” I was then told by her that she was now out $275 for the failed recovery attempt and made to feel bad even though it had nothing to do with me.
I was originally promised a refund and a reshoot which would have made me happy although I would have to come out of pocket again for hair and makeup. She presented this to me by saying
“I will offer you the reshoot and proceed with the refund, but I’ll be honest that I’m getting bad vibes from offering this.” I also paid to have my hair and makeup done for this shoot and was not refunded for that and had to coordinate with my hair and makeup artist’s availability along with my brothers and my own before I could get back to her on a specific date that we all were available for a reshoot. Upon trying to get back to her, I was then told it was the busiest time of year for her and she would no longer offer me a reshoot, instead just a refund. She then added that she would be sending over 5 photos that she had saved from the shoot as well. I did receive these, however two of the images are the exact same and the other two are photos of me alone and not flattering at all, and don’t include my brother or my pets. The last image was the one she previously sent in my preview. I sadly did not get to see whatever other images she was able to upload. Unfortunately now I have not only lost those photos, but she also turned my experience into an overwhelming and stressful one. The photos were specifically scheduled on my Mom’s birthday to honor her because she passed away when my brother and I were both young. I wanted to make the day a special experience for my brother and myself and give my family a happy memory. Instead I am left with a bad taste in my mouth and heartbroken.
I understand things can go wrong with technology, but I feel this was handled extremely poorly by Dakotah. If she would have explained the situation immediately after knowing about the corrupted files, it would have been something I could easily schedule and coordinate. I am also extremely disappointed about the way I was spoken to regarding the situation. Instead she waited over a month and a half to inform me and only after I reached out to her to inquire about what was going on. Now, I am scrambling to try to find someone to take photos because I desperately wanted them to be presented to my family even though I scheduled this several months in advance originally. I hope I can prevent someone from going through the same heartbreak and stress I went through and am still going through.
On November 13, I was told my refund was sent however I have still not received a refund.

I am so happy with how our family pictures came out. It was a pretty cold day and my 6 month old wasn't cooperating well. We tried to rush through the pictures in order to please the crabby baby . After the quick session I was so nervous the baby was going to be grumpy in every picture but I was wrong. Dakotah was so patient and got the most BEAUTIFUL pictures. Dakota is AMAZING. If you can book a session with her- do so IMMEDIATELY! I was so thrilled to see not all of her beach mini sessions had been filled and I was able to snag one.
Her photographs are so lovely, I love that we were able to go during sunset as well. Dakota definitely knows her lighting. She loves what she does and it certainly shows, high quality work and service. We had a few reschedules due to weather, but she was very communicative and flexible.
I know it's difficult with a toddler, especially one that wants to go off on his own and dig up rocks and sticks rather than smile at a camera. Dakota was SO patient and creative, she brought bubbles to catch his attention (which worked almost too well, that's all he asked her for lol). I'm very excited these will be our family photos in Virginia before we move away. Thank you so much!

She also shows you the shots she takes on her camera after different poses to make sure you like them (I loved that she did that). Just finished our session with Dakotah this evening and I'm obsessed! Before picking Dakotah, I did a lot of research and decided, based on her style of photography, that she was the right fit for us. She's super down to earth and easy going and that made her a gem to work with! She knows the ends and outs of working with natural lighting and picked the perfect backdrop for our photos. We had an amazing session on Saturday in Colonial Williamsburg. Dakotah was an absolute thrill to work with and made us feel very comfortable. I loved being able to work with such a genuine down to earth person. The two pictures we have seen so far turned out beautiful and we couldn't have asked for more. We took our engagement pictures with Dakotah and they were AMAZING! In fact, they turned out MUCH better than the Pinterest pictures I showed her ! !! I am so happy we found her and cannot to wait to see the rest! She is such a down to earth person and made my fiancé and I feel very comfortable. She did an excellent job in guiding us with different poses and ensuring I had everything in tact since it was a windy day... She took her time out to pass by the place I wanted to take the pictures and found even better spots than I did myself !!!!! She was also very educated on the rules and regulations of the city as far as what we could and couldn’t do ... You can tell she really loves what she does !!!!! So yesterday I needed a simple headshot for an application I was submitting. Nothing special. So I asked Dakota if she would help me and her response was "oh I'll do it for you, but your gonna have to model for me! " As reluctant as I was, I agreed lol...so after doing the pictures and seeing the result, I was BLOWN AWAY! She did an awesome job and made it seem easy.
