We were so pleased with the training received at CPT. Jeanne Hudson is very patient and attentive to her students. Our family and friends can't believe Sully's the same dog. Within 8 weeks he was transformed in to a calmer and much more obedient dog. We look forward to continuing our training with CPT and hope to have Jeanne for advanced training. More...

My daughter, her service puppy, Nox, and I began our journey with CPT on June 8th, 2019, when her pup was only 9 weeks old. His initial training began with two puppy socialization classes with Karen Smalley followed immediately with beginner then intermediate classes also with Karen.Despite a very large beginner class, if in need, Karen was always able to give individualized care. With each lesson Karen's directions were concise, well explained and demonstrated either by her alone or with one of her two dogs. Having both the spoken directions and the demonstrations were extremely helpful in fulfilling each training command. Also having the written homework handouts after each lesson, as a reminder of the training lessons taught, came in handy.Having Karen Smalley as my daughters and Nox's first trainer, in his long journey to become a service dog for my daughter, has been a sensational experience! Despite Nox being the youngest puppy in all his classes, and we had days with him where we were frustrated, Karen was always able to belay our fears or frustrations with kind words, clear instructions and lots of encouragement. Thanks to you, Karen, Nox is progressing wonderously. He is now benefiting from board training with one of your colleagues, Lisa Carroll. We truly appreciate the help you gave us in Nox's and my daughters long journey towards a trained service dog to help her mitigate her disabilities. For anyone looking for an excellent facility, I would highly recommend Comprehensive Pet Therapy and Karen Smalley for all your and your pets training needs. More...

We loved taking the Beginner Obedience class at CPT! Our puppy was the youngest and most distractible dog in the class but with Karen Smalley's very clear instruction and patience, it was possible to learn and practice in class and continue training at home. I was thankful for her ability to explain things in different ways using clear explanations, modeling, analogies, and repetition and I soon realized it was the owner who needed the most training! She was so observant and patient to go back over explanations of basic techniques we may not have fully absorbed from past classes. And it worked; our puppy has learned so much! I also loved when Karen showed us the desired behaviors with her own beautifully trained dogs. The CPT printouts were great tools to reiterate what we had focused on in class and the homework explanations were super helpful. We’ll be back for more classes! More...

Short version: had a fantastic session with Mark and would do it over in a heartbeat Long version: my dog had become more and more aggressive to other dogs and people on leash. He started medication to take the edge off, but needed more. I scheduled with Mark and a volunteer dog, and by the end of the session we were able to walk almost side by side, which is huge for my dog. The homework took some figuring. But I can finally walk my dog without being mortified that he's freaking out at every dog/ person that goes by. More...

I've never used a professional dog trainer. I have been coming here for about 5 weeks now for basic obedience with my Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy. Ridgebacks are very stubborn and high energy. At first, I was skeptical. But as long as we continue to practice the homework given every week, Apollo has gotten so much better. I enjoy these classes and learning alternative methods of teaching my puppy.UPDATE: I should have done this update a few months ago. Our first training class was basic obedience 8 week class. I started my pup at 4.5 weeks. After the end of class, I waited until he was 8 months and we did boarding training with Reed for 4 weeks. This was in Aug/Sept. I wanted her to focus on specific things in addition to reinforce what he learned in basic obedience. I have people in awe of how well I handle him and asking me all the time where my puppy was trained. At 11 months old and 95lbs he is as easy to handle as my 15lbs Chihuahua. Their approach to dog behavior and its application to dog training is what sets them apart from any other organization of this type that I have dealt with in the past. My wife and I volunteer with a breed-specific rescue group whose breed is known for being more "difficult" to train. Mark, Alex, Jeanne and the whole CPT team truly understands breed dynamics and approaches our dog individually and has enabled us to have an amazingly well behaved pet as well as therapy dog which we hope to share with our local community through volunteering with him.We continue to train with CPT not because we "have to" but because we want to. This spring, after continuing to have difficulty with the way she interacted with other dogs while walking in public areas, I worked with Mark who helped me understand how to minimize her anxiety. She's a changed dog! Our walks together are now much more enjoyable for the both of us and anyone else who tags along. While planning our honeymoon, my husband and I knew we wanted both a safe and loving place for our dog to stay during our trip. Since we were to be gone for 10 days, we thought boarding and training with CPT would be a good fit so our 8 month old puppy could continue training. We selected Jeanne Hodson to continue her training learned in group obedience classes with her board/training at home and we couldn't have made a better decision. Jeanne not only improved our dog's obedience skills but took care of her with a dog mom's concern when she fell sick. Before our trip, we noticed our dog was beginning to not feel well and we were so worried to leave her behind for this length of time. Jeanne put our minds at ease as she provided updates via text and phone calls and would even take her on vet visits as needed. We were so relieved our dog was with someone who truly loves all animals as her own and knows their safety is the top priority. Upon pick-up, Jeanne did a thorough hand-off and walked us through all the training exercises she learned and the best news was she was already healing and feeling much better! Our dog is also a much better leash walker and obedient follower :) We plan to use Jeanne for any future extended vacations as we can tell our dog had a great time and really developed a bond with her trainer. The trainer, Mark, was really friendly and knowledgeable. He met Marv and we had one session where he gave me several exercises to do with him to help him adjust to people. He also gave me lots of resources to read and suggestions on how to help his behavior. Even after our session, he kept in contact with me through e-mail and offered advice. About 15 years ago I worked for CPT part-time when I first relocated to Georgia and was preparing to pass the bar exam. I found the company reputable, client-oriented, and dedicated to providing the highest quality service. For the past 14 years I have been a practicing attorney. Still, I maintained my relationship with CPT, albeit as a client. I trained my Samoyed Astro with CPT. I first brought him to CPT for aggression reduction after he started a fight with a Sheltie in my apartment complex and was lunging aggressively at dogs in the park. CPT quickly helped me remedy the problem using positive and very humane methods. Astro soon ( within a few months) became friendly with all dogs, where I never had a problem again with aggression. Moreover, Astro became significantly more obedient, calm, relaxed, and happier. I continued training Astro in group class through all the pet programs and then the competition program, where I am proud to say my once aggressive, out of control, bolting Samoyed achieved AKC Novice and Open titles and several second and third place finishes. After Astro passed away and several life changes that included marriage and the purchase of a house, I brought my Samoyed Max to CPT. Again, CPT did an excellent job. Max was a rescue that arrived rambunctious and stubborn. With CPT’s help he became a much more manageable and enjoyable pet. Now, I am bringing my Australian Shepherd puppy Yahtzee to CPT. We have completed Beginner and Intermediate Obedience, Beginner Agility, and several private lessons. I wouldn’t take Yahtzee anywhere else and I understand dog training.Granted, my long term relationship with CPT may have me favorably biased, but as I read the 5-star reviews and the 1-star reviews I notice that the 5-star reviews are all written by people who used CPT’s services, whereas none of the 1-star reviewers ever trained their dogs with CPT. There are four 1-star reviews, of which 2 of the persons never showed up for class then were surprised that they couldn’t get their money back. Come on! Be real! The company has costs and you have responsibilities. I wouldn’t give your money back either. Then 2 other persons never used the service. One of the two had no comments and the other criticized the methodology as being too harsh. I have witnessed the methodology for 15 years and I can say firsthand that CPT’s methods are humane, kind, practical, and effective for both easy and difficult dogs and both puppies and older rescues. And like the owner said in his reply, he is acclaimed for conducting fMRI research on canine behavior that was covered by 60 Minutes. He has accomplished more in his industry than anyone else I know of in Atlanta.I rarely write reviews. I am too busy with my job and my children to offer my opinion on every company that makes me smile or disappoints me. However, I feel so strongly about CPT and so strongly about the inappropriateness of some of the reviews that it would have been unjust to ignore what I read without writing a firsthand rebuttal. Mark is nothing short of a miracle worker. We quickly learned that our recently acquired 2 yr old GSD was riddled with anxiety and other issues. We spent three months trying everything we could think of to help her and nothing was working. We didn't want to give her up, but we couldn't really see a way to turn things around and things weren't looking good. Our family was stressed, our other dogs were stressed and she was a mess. After hiring another behaviorist and not seeing results, I was reluctant to try again, but we really didn't want to give up on her. Mark came over and by the time he left I could already see tremendous progress. Over the next few weeks, it only got better. I implemented everything that Mark taught me and she's turned into a different dog. Not only that, I emailed Mark progress reports and he was able to help me via email with ongoing issues. His knowledge of dogs and their behavior is astounding, but so is his medical knowledge. With his help, I was able to go to my vet and have her put on the correct anti anxiety medication and other supplements and they've made a world of difference. I cannot express how much Mark has helped change all of our lives for the better. Our dog is functioning better and happier than I've ever seen her. I'm so grateful to this company for helping Baylor (my service dog) and I. Not even once did I feel uncomfortable sharing with them what I needed. I never felt judged or misunderstood and I trusted 100% that Baylor was in the best possible hands. The second time Lisa (a trainer with CPT) came to get Baylor for board training, Baylor ran out to Lisa's truck and didn't look back at mom or home even once! That really floored me. Baylor is so attached to me, and I have to admit I was a bit jealous that she loved Lisa that much! :) That moment totally silenced any questions in the back of my mind about how Baylor was getting on when she was hanging out with Lisa. Clearly they have a really special bond and Lisa has an awesome gift working with dogs. Baylor is not the same dog she was in January, and it's all thanks to Lisa. I want to also comment on how dramatically Baylor changed each time she had her board training. The first board train, she came home much quieter and able to focus with a very expanded repertoire of commands and things to work on. However, in public she was still kind of distracted around other dogs and I don't think she fully understood her job. This is totally understandable, since she had only spent 6 weeks with Lisa. The second board train she did was for 5 weeks and Baylor came back a dog ready to WORK. She can now restrain herself from being wild to absolutely calm in seconds. I am amazed at how many new things Lisa taught her in such a short time. Baylor is learning Heel, Back, has mastered the Stand/Stay, does a great Visit, and her Lean is perfect. I am thrilled with Baylor's progress and I take her with me proudly. We are an awesome team now, and I think she is a great ambassador to other service dog teams and pit bulls. Even when she's not working, we get so many compliments on her good behavior and how sweet she is. I am so, so thankful to CPT. On another note, I am on the lowest dose of medication I've ever been on, and my psychiatrist and I are considering tapering me off of it completely. I have no doubt that this is entirely due to how much Baylor has been helping me since her training. More...

Going to CPT was the best decision we made for our dog, Balou (rat terrier). We adopted Balou when he was 4 months old and shortly after we discovered he had some aggression issues towards other dogs and strangers. We enrolled Balou in the Puppy Class at CPT, which we loved; however, Balou wasn't quite ready for that kind of exposure to other dogs. One of the other couples in the Puppy Class told us about Mark Spivak (owner of CPT) and how he had helped one of their friends whose dog had aggression issues. So we decided to move forward with private lessons. We were committed to doing whatever was best for our little boy.Over the next few months we had 4-5 private lessons with Mark and worked on several different drills to address separation anxiety, fear aggression towards dogs and people, anxiety, as well as leadership training for me (my husband was clearly the alpha male and Balou would not listen to me). At each lesson we learned a lot of helpful tools and the leadership training for me was life changing. It has made such a big difference. Balou has definitely made a lot of progress and we owe Mark and his team to that success. We still have some things we need to work on but Mark provided us with the tools to help Balou and in due time we believe his aggression will be minimal. What dogs need most is consistency and unfortunately with our living arrangement at this time we haven't been able to give that to Balou. But we are very hopeful for the future:-) Our goal is to get Balou in a group class, and we're going to make that happen! One thing in particular that I love about Mark's training style is he strongly believes in positive reinforcement and setting your dog up to succeed, not fail, which I truly value and respect. This particular approach may not be for every dog, I don't know, but it's definitely worth finding out. Hiring a private trainer can be an investment, but CPT's goal is to equip you, the owner, with the tools to train your dog to be the best companion he/she can be. As long as you do your homework and are consistent with your dog then you won't need to keep going back for more lessons. After 4 or 5 lessons we felt well equipped to help Balou with his fear aggression and anxiety level and what's awesome is so much of what we've learned can be applied to any dog we have in the future:-) More...

They will recommend different methods or training supplies depending on the dog s personality and temperament to make sure that the appropriate methods are being used to address each dog s different learning abilities. All of the trainers have been willing to stay after class for additional questions. I appreciate that they do not use a single training method on all dogs but instead adapt the training methods needed to the dog-I use different equipment and methods on my dogs who have opposite temperaments (one is very energetic and friendly and the other is very shy). They were also taken care of very well when boarded- they were given ample play time, given baths, and didn t have to stay in noisy, stressful kennels like at the vet. SInce 1994, I have been training our dogs with Mark Spivak and CPT--almost 20 years! Mark has guided us through puppy classes, basic obedience, advanced obedience, and now some ground breaking training with Emory University in understanding our dogs' minds. I have also done agility and competitive agility with other trainers at CPT. I have raised 3 big dogs through the ranks of CPT - each with completely different personalities and therefore needs for different methods of training. Mark is extremely knowledgeable and worked with us on issues until we found the right training method for each dog. I have well trained dogs, in large part, due to Mark's instruction to me and my family. I have recommended CPT to many, many friends over the years and will continue to do so. It is a top notch program! More...

Seven years ago I retired from the Army and adopted a 3 yr old German Shepherd named Bianka. We were having issues with her and my cats, apparently she had never seen a cat before and I was worried about my cats! Mark came to my house and gave me basic rules to follow with her and showed me how to gradually introduce the cats and the dog. It took a few weeks of training for me to feel comfortable with her around the cats. But now, seven years later, I still have my 3 cats and Bianka and all get along just fine. Actually my oldest cat and her snuggle together all the time now! Job well done Mark! I highly recommend him! More...

I trained my dogs with Mark and his excellent staff of behaviorists, and am always quick to refer them to my friends. They have the experience and know-how to deal with the most complex and difficult problems. The obedience classes taught at CPT are truly comprehensive as well, and the insight provided by the instructors is beyond what you would find at a chain store. I’ve always felt comfortable taking my dogs here, and love the insightful, intelligent, and understanding service that Mark and his staff provide. More...
