I have been a fan of Columbia's steak house since the 1980s! whatever they make it right, the nighthawk special is one of the best dishes you can get in Lexington Kentucky. Lately, though, it seems they have changed the recipe or they have Cooks who just don't know how to make it. There's rarely enough garlic in it anymore. If I just wanted steak with butter, I could get that anywhere. What truly sets this apart is the garlic butter. I hope management will improve the training of kitchen staff to make sure that the garlic butter is made consistently with the same recipe that has been used for decades. It truly makes a difference between a five star and a 2-star rating. When it is made correctly, I would give it ten Stars! More...

My go to for dinner. Driving through town...back and forth on where to eat... We end up at Columbia's. Flo treats us like family, welcomes us in the door by name, and saves corks so my daughters can build towers while they wait for food. It's a step back in time to a dimly lit dining room with walls covered with photos of visitors past and present. It's a place for folks that like food. Meat and butter are the main courses. If you want to count your carbs or are scared of gluten then this isn't the place for you. Go somewhere else. If you want a good cut of meat swimming in butter where you have to ask for steak sauce, though it's an insult to the staff then come to Columbias. Fair prices and great food. This is a quaint place. The doors are a little confusing, follow the one that says STEAK!haha. The decor is interesting, however the lighting was terrible. The staff was friendly and attentive. It was wonderful. The garlic and butter steak is just as I remembered it 37 years ago plus their Diego salad. I remember Smitty, the matre'd. He was friendly and welcomed everyone into the restaurant as if they were family. He worked at the first restaurant downtown. They also had two gentlemen playing country music on guitars. Dominique was our server for our 2019 work meeting/dinner. We made a reservation for 10 and they sent us up in the side room. It was comfortable and spacious and perfect for our group. We went to Columbia's in downtown Lexington for a Murder Mystery Dinner! Yes it was as exciting as it sounds. The show was hosted by bluegrass mystery theatre. The biggest thing for us was that the show was kid friendly It doesn't sound like a big deal but it's hard to find one were they will allow kids under 16. So for a 3 course dinner and the show it was only $29!! I would suggest anyone I know to go, it's an excellent Addition to a Sunday evening. More...

Amazing food, accommodating staff. Had a group Gathering there. We were a little late and it was still very gracious. The food was excellent and again, the service was very friendly and they worked quickly for us to get us our food while it was hot even though we had a large group. Will definitely be back.

This is one of Lexington KY's legendary restaurants for a good reason: excellent Southern food, especially steaks, cooked perfectly, with excellent, attentive waiters willing to tell you the inside secrets of the kitchen. We all had the famous Nighthawk Special--a lovely steak cooked in garlic butter--but with different sides. I chose the broccoli in lemon butter, which was fresh and savory, and on the recommendation of our waiter, the sweet potato casserole. This was not the sweet potatoes and marshmallows of my Ohio youth. There were no marshmallows at all. Instead there were pecans, raisins, coconut and perhaps maple syrup. Incredible!
