My wife and I went out of town for about a week for vacation.  The sitter (Sandy) made a couple of visits to get our dog acclimated.  She left a note for each visit, describing how it went.  My daughter was in and out of the house during the week (which is why we retained Colby's).  She said a couple of times, the sitter came while she was here, and while our dog is very shy, after a couple of days, she was happy to see Sandy (and even asked for a belly rub the last day.)  She even made a couple of complimentary visits to give Chloe some TLC.  It ended up being not that much more than a decent kennel, and we didn't have to worry about our dog coming home all stressed out.
