We have been coming here for three years every time we are in town for the holidays. Never had a bad meal here!!The food is delicious. The decor is lively. (And holiday festive!) The service is impeccable (Shout our to Terry!! Who gives the best food and wine pairing recs)Shrimp and grits has been the go-to for years. It has always stood up to the test of time. God bless bacon!Their menu is seasonal and ever changing so while I will review the dishes we had, most likely you will not have these exact ones, but here we go:Their dinner entree specials are always interesting. This time we got their braised (48 hrs!) beef belly with parm grits. Never. Ever. Say no to meat fat or creamy cheese. That's my food rule. Fried oyster toast - cornmeal battered to perfection. Super light. Not too salty. But still had a kick. The special pork dumplings - underwhelming and doughy. Needed more meat. Also wontons are not dumplings. Catfish - amazing. Delicious. Nuff said. Dulce de leche - dessert. Is. Always. Good. Yes. Cool. Love. More...

Never disappointed with the food here! We came in the night after thanksgiving for a family dinner and I was blown away by the grouper. The best grouper I have ever had. My mother got the chicken and husband the catfish. The catfish was very blackened (in a good way!) and the black eyed pea grits were great! The chicken was very tender and easily able to be cut with a fork. The waiter recommended it and we are glad he did. We will definitely be back next time we are in oxford! More...

Loved it. Here's some added color. First, I had this place in mind since a work colleague suggested it, so I made a reservation, but continued to ask locals for their dinner recommendations.  To my surprise, no one recommended City Grocery...so after people would go through their list of recommendations, I would say "what do you think about City Grocery"?  People were hesitant...they said "too fancy"..."too pricey"..."it's a bit overrated". Okay DO NOT LISTEN TO THAT!!!The place was quaint, and people were dressed nicely, but it was just 'very nice'. I never felt like it was stuffy or we didn't belong (we were in Ole Miss sweatshirts). I had my first hot totty (use crown royal), Emily had the SHRIMP & GRITS, which was amazing, and I got the PORK CHOP - which was one of the best and tastiest meals I ever had. We had a great appetizer (pork belly dumplings) and I had a glass of wine (and my hot totty) and the bill was about $110...that was definitely NOT too pricey for the quality of food and service. Made a great memory there in Oxford while visiting Ole Miss!  Long story short...go here, it was awesome! More...

Note: some of the older reviews of the shrimp & grits talk about how "hot" they tasted - - - the spices have been toned down so order up! Excellent service. We've been to City Grocery several times now and always like it, but I wouldn't say it's the BEST restaurant in Oxford and it's never really blown me away. Perfectly acceptable in all ways, but not a 5 star situation. I think it's fun because it's on the Square, it has a genteel vibe, and the food is always changing and interesting. That being said, it's a little pricey for Oxford (relax, guys), and the atmosphere is a little dark and depressing. I think it's a fine place to dine and will likely go back, but there are better options on the Square for dinner. The last time I went I had the beef cheeks. They were scrumptious and I really enjoyed the corn bread they served complimentary prior to the meal. The beef cheeks were served over a bed of risotto, which was delicious! The food is never a disappointment, but when the bill comes you sort of ask yourself what the heck cost so much? If you are looking for a fresh menu, good food, and consistent atmosphere, you won't be disappointed here. It's safe. That being said, there are better meals at more reasonable prices at other spots around town. As a matter of fact, the same dude owns some of them! More...

This was a while back, but I still remember what I ordered because some price tags are more memorable than others and all. I believe it was the southern style grilled catfish on a bed of cajun style rice. The meal wasn't bad, but the fish was definitely over seasoned. A tad heavy on the salt. The bartender made one hell of a Jack and coke though, and the cornbread muffins weren't too shabby. The best part was the dessert, because I had never seen or heard of a fruity pebble ice cream sandwich until that evening, and suffice it to say, it was pretty good. Service was swift and accommodating enough. The bartender was very polite and she answered my questions I had about the menu in great detail. It was almost as if she worked there or magic or something else more believable. The only thing I found distasteful was the volume of chatter in the room and that's only because I didn't know that I could go upstairs at the time. More...

We sat upstairs at the bar for a few drinks. I love the atmosphere and the drinks were fantastic. It's an oxford must to sit on the balcony for drinks and enjoy the views of downtown Oxford. There is a bar menu for upstairs and the only reason I give this place 4 stars is because the bar menu is so limited with around 6 things to choose from. I have yet to try the food but will update this review when I do so! More...

Went tonight Oct 17, 2014 n ordered oysters, my favorite. They were so small I couldn't get them on my folk. This is Oct! Told they had lamb ribs . Had some once at the Renevous(?) in Memphis n loved them.
So meaty n tender so instead of my second doz of oysters I ordered the lamb ribs. So uneatable! No meat, all grissle! Asked the waitress a out the small oysters n the lamb was uneatable. Asked if there was a new chef. She told me it was a new menu. Anothet at the table ordered the seafood gumbo. She said the roux was not good. Didn't finish the gumbo. She got a red chip for free oysters. Really? John, you need to getback to the Snack Bar. I loved it, but not tonight.

I've waited a long time to experience this jewel! I was not disappointed. Our waiter was fabulous -- he hails from Cleveland, but you'd never know it. After he tended to the preliminaries, I told him to just surprise me -- bring me what he would feed to his mother if she was there. After a divine green salad, and wonderful cornbread muffins, he brought me shrimp and grits, and my husband had the red fish. Best shrimp and grits I've ever had -- and I've had it in a lot of places. The redfish with rice and asparagus was scrumptious. Then, to cap the stack, we split a peanut butter and jelly bread pudding-- oh my! It was heavenly! The service was grand. The food was grand. I can't wait to go back.
Go Bulldogs -- Hail State! Sorry. But after last night, I no longer hate you, Ole Miss!
