We came here to celebrated my friend's birthday party here last night. The restaurant was quite busy at 4. I believe this is around the time they transition from lunch to dinner because they hardly have anything out and mostly it looks empty but by 4:30pm , wow it looked amazing, so much selection and of course it tasted hot and fresh.  They have a lot of great sushi and other asian dishes.  The restaurant is big and clean. Service though is very transactional.  If you eat here on your Birthday and you are with 6 other people you get your meal for free.  This is a great place for All you can eat sushi. More...

The quality is way better than any other place. It's packed every time I've been. If you're looking for sushi- this place won't disappoint.  Even the sashimi is better quality than some restaurants. The variety of the hot food is damn good too.  Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino. Desserts always suck at these types of places. At least they have scooped ice cream- which seems hard to screw up. Have you seen the movie,  "My Big Fat Greek Wedding?"  That pretty much sums up my family. We came not us a pack, but a platoon group. We vacated rows of tables, and dined in to celebrate my cousin's retirement from the US Army, where she dedicated her life to serve our country.  I'm so proud of her.I've dined at Moonstar a few times and this review is long overdue.  I'm impressed with their sushi and sashimi selections.  A ton! Needles to say, I did a few rounds of sashimi "pickin" before hitting the dessert bar. In my humble opinion,  their sashimi selections are excellent.  I recommend indulging yourself to a few rounds of Hamachi and don't forget their fresh oysters and squirt a few sriracha while you're at it because it will give  you a nice kicker.I didn't spend too much time with their cooked food, mainly Chinese dishes,  but their fried chicken wings are legit. Very good! I was also surprised they offer a good selections of ice cream. I do suggest, try their Halo-Halo. It's the inphamous Filipino dessert mixed with island delightful fruits. Lastly,  kudos to their team of highly efficient staff. They were all attentive and provided great service.  Considering, we came as a platoon, taking endless photos, with aunties and uncles, moving from one table to the next. Cheers! More...

This is my second time here at Moonstar buffet. They offer a good variety of food. My favorite are the beef & mushrooms, hot & sour soup, cucumbers, french fries, and watermelon. Like all buffet, their seafood aren't fresh. And I love seafood; sushi, sashimi, raw oysters, you name it. But I didn't eat any of that here because as a seafood lover, I understand that buffet can't afford to serve fresh seafood like Hogs Island Oyster or Swan Oyster Depot does. Seafood are expensive. My opinion is that if you can't serve fresh seafood, why not serve less seafood and more fresh food?My uncle says the porridge and noodles here are delicious. I haven't tried it yet but I'll take his words for it. Moonstar is great for parties, family dinners, and regular hangouts. Overall, I believe the variety of food here can make a lot of customers happy. They just need some improvement on the seafood freshness, which is like 35% of what they serve. More...

This review is long overdue. This place knows how to handle big gatherings like birthday parties! Seems like each time I come here there are multiple parties going on. I had my son's one year birthday/red egg ginger party here with about 80 guests for weekend lunch. I went in person to reserve my date a few months in advance and the manager Annie was great and helpful. I put a small deposit down to hold the date and signed a contract that was simple and Annie explained everything to me nicely. They also included a selfie station, face paint station, balloons, red egg and ginger, check in table backdrop and a dedicated person the day of to make sure everything is running smoothly in our package. We also got a small discount from the listed price for walk in patrons. The dedicated helper was FANTASTIC and made the biggest difference! She was great at taking photos especially for groups at the check in table. She also helped put up our decorations and cut and cut the cake we brought in. She made sure everything was running smoothly. She then quickly transferred the photos she took to my iPhone via Airdrop. She also printed up a few as well. The food is good and the guests kept going back for more until they told us to leave LOL so sorry I can't remember the girl who helped us that day...We were soooo glad we came here because they handled everything so well since they do parties all the time. I would recommend this place to others for parties for sure! Many friends and families have held their parties here and now I can see why! Well done! More...

You will eat your brains out!Asian buffet style, serving all kinds of dishes.  I went for lunch, to see what this place was all about and I must say it was rather overwhelming with all the food options they offer.  From shrimp dumplings, vegetables chow main, baked pork chops, to the sweet and spicy soup.  It may be impossible to leave this place still hungry.  I really loved the porridge station, to the wide variety of fresh rolled sushi.  Listen guys their is an abundance of food here.  And it's not bad at all it's actually really good!  You get a 2hr time limit to pig out as much as you can.  I honestly went in their thinking I could really hang but found myself tapping out within 25 minutes.  I felt like the waiter saw defeat in my eyes because she kept pushing the bill closer and closer to me every time she walked by my table, like get the f out already. . This place offers a huge section of desserts to a really cool chocolate waterfall fondue that you can dip marshmellos or strawberries in.  This place is great for big parties and people who really just want to eat as much as they can.  Price is about 17bucks for lunch (dinner may be a little more) staff is friendly but I feel they push you to get out.  And take out is a option, they charge by weight.  They have a cool bday celebration thing they do too. This is my second time having the lunch buffet.  It's been very busy both times.  I'm here mainly because I like the variety and the reasonable price per person which includes beverages.  You'll pay for your meals at your table, not when you enter like in Vegas.  Parties of six or more have a gratuity automatically added, so check your bill.  The staff does deserve at least 15% or more.  I hope the cooks and food servers behind the buffet counters receive a share of the tips collected.  I saw one worker checking the temperatures of the food.  If you've ever become ill at another buffet, you know how important it is that hot food stays hot and cold food stays cold! Moonstar's employees are right on top of that. They keep the tables clean, so your plates don't pile up and you can get more to eat on clean dishes.  There is a two hour limit, which is more than enough to stuff yourself.  Table staff are considerate, they don't rush you out the door, even though hungry patrons may be waiting to be seated.  Moonstar Buffet is a destination for many folks after they've attended memorial services and are in need of comfort food. It's a short drive from Colma. If you're celebrating another more joyous occasion or are just plain hungry, this is the place for you.  Be sure to bookmark Moonstar's for when you're in the South SF / Daly City area! SUMMARY: Your average Asian buffet with pretty decent food and spot on service.  3/5 for the food (some were 4's) and the service was definitely a 4.  BACKGROUNDWe came here for a friend's 1 year old baby birthday and they invited a lot of people to join in on the celebration.  While the wife and I are not big buffet people, we were turned around once we walked in.ATMOSPHERE (5/5)Wow this place is big.  But not so big that you got a million people fighting over a small amount of food. The place is well kept actually and the tables and floors were kept clean.  I was actually impressed by this enough to rate it a 5/5. The bathroom though needs a little work as it's starting to look worn.FOODLike I mentioned above, the food overall rated a 3/5 for most items we tried but a few were 4's.  But allow me to describe the layout as I remember it:  at one end is all the fried foods and some shellfish. That end has some dim sum, soups, and the soda fountain machines. They also have tea and coffee.  In the middle section they have some other cooked items including a made-to-order stand, as well as some grilled items like pike and longanisa (sp?).  Then the other half of the buffet consists of lots of nigiri sushi, sashimi, and the like.  Finally at the other end were the dessert stations including a flowing chocolate fountain for dipped strawberries. Some notable things we really liked:- Snails (at the fried food end near the soda machine)- Some of the nigiri sushi like the plain ones (tuna was esp. good)- Tuna sashimi was good but not excellent- Tempura (kind of hidden but I got a bunch)- Garlic fried shrimp- Marinated cucumbers- Mango and taro pudding and the flan (wife's fave)- Taro ice cream Some others we really disliked:- Chicken mushroom- Crab in blackbean sauce (waaay too salty and overcooked)SERVICEOk let's be honest: Chinese restaurant? Expectations for service immediately goes down a few notches.  So we were absolutely pleasantly surprised from the time we checked in to the time we finished lunch. We actually had some really great table service for a party of over 120 (yes, over 120).  Our finished plates were promptly cleared and they even refilled tea, which I thought was a total trip for a self-service buffet.  They even very politely reminded all the tables that the buffet time limit was being reached in a very professional tone.  What really impressed me too is how they took care of my friend's baby celebration.  Everything was set up properly, the drum person came out, and they facilitated the picture taking with my friends and their baby with all the guests.RETURN VISIT?Well it's a hike for us to get out there (gotta cross one of the bridges), but if there's another event there, we'll be happy to return.Good job, Moonstar!
