The food itself at this place is pretty standard diner fare, it has a friendly old school feel and I love the concept and the uniforms of staff. However regarding the wait on the weekend, I wouldn't return because the quality goes down significantly, service and food wise which is to be expected with such a crowd, however the places, downtown handle it with ease. With the right company how slow it is isn't a dealbreaker or anything to ruin the meal, but I wouldn't recommend it to people visiting or anyone looking for an incredible diner experience. More...

Lynn W.Tonight I went to dinner and ordered the fried chicken. I have been eating at this restaurant for 8 years now and this is the absolute worse meal I have ever had here. The chicken had very little crust and the vegetables had no seasoning. The cornbread was cold and I had to ask for another piece. We decided to try Home Plate since it has changed owners and it has posted on facebook and touted a new chef. I had hopes that it would be competitive with restaurants located in a more populated area. We arrived and were promptly seated and the server was pleasant. I am a coke products loyalist and found out they only sell pepsi products. I can handle that but it is something that I use as a deciding factor on whether or not to return.My wife ordered a chicken tender salad and it was pretty good. I had a taste of the chicken and it was very tender and flavorful.I ordered the prime rib, I was asked how I would like it in regards to being cooked. I like mine rare. In no way was it close to being rare. I understand that the rare pieces are not always available but my problem is if you don't have rare then tell me or give me the option to order something else. Don't plate it and serve it as rare.I was not impressed with the salad, it was a plate of chopped iceberg lettuce with a few carrots pieces and a small amount of lettuce. We tried to order a piece of pie and they had run out of that flavor. Again, I understand being out of something but it was disappointing.Overall, the food was edible but if you put this up against a place in town it would be well below average. If you want something to fix a hunger issue this isn't a bad place but if you want something that impresses you I cannot recommend it. Another way to put it is: Now that my expectations are lowered I know what it is but I would not recommend it to out of town guests or for people wanting a nice dinner. Chef Nico has started a "Date Night" event at Home Plate! My husband and I made reservations for last night, Thursday, Sept 1 at 6:30. We brought two additional couples with us. Chef Nico created the menu and it was excellent! Our dinner consisted of an appetizer, salad, entree, dessert and a glass of wine ( additional wine was extra) . The Chef seated us in the banquet room and brought dish after dish to us! The food portions were large enough to satisfy even the husbands who are pretty big eaters! We have been to the Home Plate three times now since the ownership change and have had three excellent meals. Fast and friendly service and excellent food. The fried chicken is especially good. I've been a fan of Homeplate for years...usually eating at least once weekly...most of the time in Thursdays because we love their fried chicken, we always get it to go. Tonight called in at 5 to order was told they only had two pieces of white meat left... that's fine we will take it and chicken strips. I got home with my food and my chicken is not edible...most of the crust is missing so the actual chicken is burned!! I'm sure this would never have been served to a customer eating at the restaurant. I'm so disappointed. My father had the liver and onions ( which is his usual) and he said it was also over cooked and like eating shoe liver. Please do better More...

Don't come here at noon on a Sunday! They're so busy that they can't even handle their wait list.Hostess put me on her list for a party of 1. After waiting a long time I pointed out to her that there was an empty 1-top available and asked if I could sit there. She said, "just a minute, let me check" -- and vanished!Probably the food is good here, based on the long wait line, who knows. But I couldn't wait around any longer to taste it, so I bailed. Good diner food. Home country cooking if you don't feel like cooking. An option for everyone! I usually get a grilled fish, sweet potato and other vegetable, or a salad, because I follow Mediterranean diet. Sometimes I get a vegetable plate. A little more of a challenge as many of the veggies are creamed, fried or have sugar - but if that is your thing-delish! My mom loves liver and onions or meatloaf. My husband likes fried catfish. As California tourists, my golfing buddies and I were blown away by the idea of Chicken Fried Chicken. The food was fine as long as you don't mind a months worth of cholesterol in one meal. WOW. WHAT A DISSAPPOINTMENT!!!!!! I've been taking my elderly father here for the last few years and it's been a good experience. Apparently, under new ownership, the quality and service has TANKED! We went tonight for "Steak" special night. Mine was average, dad ordered the corned beef and cabbage. The people that came in after us and seated across the isle were served before us. We waited and waited and finally the girl came and took our order. My dad's order came out and was so tough, he couldn't even eat it. By now, our appetite had gone. We were supposed to get the "complimentary" cobbler with "vanilla ice cream of course". His was also stale and he didn't eat it. I elected to take mine to go. They dumped mine in a styrofoam coffee cup without the ice cream and sent us on our way. When I went to the counter to pay, the girl asked me how everything was. I explained our experience. This was a perfect opportunity to make good and remove the cost of the disgusting serving of corned beef and cabbage my dad ordered. Instead, I got "sorry about that". Our group of eight had just finished our two-hour treatments at the bathhouse and we only had enough energy to say ".... lunch...lunch." One of the guys and me were looking on Yelp and simultaneously said, "How 'bout the Home Plate Cafe?" It's several miles from downtown Hot Springs, but very close to where we were staying in Hot Springs Village.The Home Plate is nothing to look at on the outside, but it has a fun atmosphere inside, with a large menu. We were served by a superwoman named Theresa who offered suggestions, knew what was in every dish, and kept all our glasses filled. She's one of the best waitstaff I've ever known!Everyone ordered something different and it was fun to watch every single person say, "This is *really* good!"We were stuffed and very well pleased. In fact, we were so pleased that we came back for a late-ish lunch the next day (Superbowl Sunday). The cafe was only open until 2:00 and we arrived at 1:30, but we were welcomed in and thrilled to see Theresa again! I don't think anyone ordered the same thing they'd had the day before, but the dishes were once again universally praised, along with Theresa's incredible service. One of the group ordered an appetizer of fried green tomatoes. They were so delicious we had to order a second round.Scrumptious food all around and we even ordered eight slices of various pies to take back to our rental for Super Bowl snacking. Been twice. Once for dinner, ordered A Ruben. Awful Processed Swiss cheese couldn't melt, the sandwich was cold and the meat was tough. Why go cheap on the cheese?Why send a grilled sandwich to a table when it's at room temp?Second attempt and LAST, was for breakfast. I ordered the blueberry pancakes. Another mistakeThe blueberries were hard as pebbles, EVERY blueberry had to be removed just to eat the sad pancake. Why is The place packed all of the time?Goes to show you mediocre prevails. New to area and looking for a place for breakfast and Home Plate was recommended by the locals. It was extremely busy and we waiting 5 minutes to be seated, waitress delivered our drinks and took our order. We waited about 25 minutes to see our server again with our food and a chance to refill our drinks. I understand restaurants getting very busy and waiting for my food, however, when the food arrives and it's barely lukewarm, there's no excuse.
