The one one restaurant in town where we could get in without reservation. But... everything was better than we imagined! Great food! I ordered a Seafood Risotto with white meat fish. Delicious! Surprisingly lovely but simple meal while in Hilo. We loved the local brews (try the Ola ginger cider -- holy cow, so good! ) Noting that this was an Italian spot, we decided to stick to the classics -- pizza and pasta. The "simple classic" pasta was just that -- but tasted so fresh, with vegetables and chunks of feta. We loved the mushrooms and olives in this dish. We were inspired by our neighbors' meal to try the pizza and weren't disappointed.We also love that this is in a repurposed / refurbished old building. Cafe pesto, we love you. You are always welcoming to us whether it's all eight of my large family, or a romantic night for just my husband and I. We have eaten here for brunch, quick lunches and leisurely dinners many times over the years. I take all my friends and any family that are visiting the island here because I know I can count on a great experience and wonderful food. Everything is good. The staff is always friendly, attentive and easy to chat with. Best coffee! I'm serious, even when I'm enjoying alcoholic beverages I still also order the coffee here. It's wonderful. Love the waffles and chicken for their brunch. They have a wonderful burger. Of course their pesto pasta is delicious, but my very favorite thing is their pizza. You guys rock the pizza. Your crust is so tasty. I literally crave it. Also, I'm a very savvy pizza maker myself so this compliment isn't one that is given lightly. I love your sweet chili shrimp pizza. It's my absolute favorite. The keiki menu is wonderful as well which is important to our family of eight. I also love the ambience here. Great vibe with lots of happy staff and patrons. Located in a very nice little old downtown style shopping area in Hilo. Dining room is nice. Menu, for lunch anyway is pretty simple. Sort of an Italian style, with pizzas and pastas. I wish there was a half star. Cafe Pesto is a solid 3.5 stars. It's ok and never my choice but I don't argue if folks want to go there. I can always find something to order. The price is okay. It's just... bland and safe. That's not a bad thing, there needs to be a nicer place for folks who don't want too much adventure in their food, for people who want expected flavor profiles. Personally, I just like a bit more to my food. It's why I don choose to eat here. But it's fine. When your grandparents from Tulsa visit, it's a great place. First date? The six of us overall enjoyed the restaurant. We ordered the a margarita pizza but our server somehow mistaken the order and so it had jo tomato sauce but in stead chop tomatoes on top.
