I've been using Brass Taxes for the last 4 years, and they've always been awesome. Before Brass Taxes, I went to H&R Block, who had NO idea about freelancer/artist returns. Rus and his team cater to freelancers, and are very knowledgeable about how to sort everything out. First, you are prompted by their easy-to-follow website to upload your documents, etc. - it's a nice, streamlined system - and then you talk to a cool human at the end to wrap things up. Last year, I had a complicated issue with some crowd-sourcing money, and Rus was super helpful in addressing it. I fall into the "other nice people" category of customers Brass Taxes serves: I'm not a freelancer, I don't own a business, but I do work in one state and live in another and have some light itemization to take care of. My return isn't too complicated but it's still well over my head, and Marci did a great job of finding things to itemize that I never would have thought of, explaining what works and why, and I feel confident that they secured my best possible return. This is my 3rd year filing through Brass Taxes. I'm a freelance Assistant Director. i typically have 20-30 w2s, 1099 income, file in several states and like to really expense my spendings appropriately. For a portion of what many of my colleagues pay, I've found brass taxes to offer an easier system and a smoother filing process. My whole system is more organized because of what I've learned through using brass taxes. You upload everything, complete a clear questionnaire regarding expenses and then go in for your appointment to file. Doing your taxes is annoying regardless, but it's really not a big deal anymore when someone can do it for you correctly and for a great price. You don't think of tax-doing as an opportunity to not only *do taxes, but to network, set career goals, laugh, brainstorm, catch up (you also don't think about writing a Yelp review about a tax prep service)-- but over the past five or so years that I've used brass taxes, I find tax time not just not-stressful, but a kind of nice wrap up to the year. There is definitely an overabundance of intelligence here, and it finds its outlet in helping you understand your taxes, finding opportunities for savings, offering advice for thinking through next year -- I've asked for counsel on salary negotiations, international employment, and other general financial matters, too.  For me it's no small thing that the owner has worked in comedy (and is actually funny). I don't laugh easily but see humour as a most compelling evidence of intelligence and understanding. And down to brass taxes:  the uploading and video options make it easy to manage an appointment (I've even had my taxes done from London), taxes are always in on time, and I always get a much-needed refund.  It's taxes done plus; highly recommended. These guys are simply the best. I went there years ago after my last accountant really messed up. Rus, the owner, sat with me, calmed me down, and we were able clean the entire thing up. This will be my third year going to Brass Taxes (this year via Skype, because I left NYC) and I've had nothing but wonderful experiences. I'm a filmmaker and was finishing grad school, then had student loan questions, and magically (it seemed) all was figured out. I really lucked up finding these guys!!!I met with Marci a few days ago for a consultation. We reviewed my personal and busIness  tax returns for the past two years. She was great at assessing the errors and had no problems praising the previous tax professional on the areas that were done correctly. I was so nervous about having to file taxes by myself considering I'm a freelance photographer. I made my appointment with Brass Taxes online, prepared all of my paper work as it instructed and met with Erin a few days later. Erin is a total tax god; everyone that works at Brass Taxes are tax gods. I could not have had a better experience, and to top it off, I got money back! The atmosphere is fun and laid back. As soon as my husband and I walked in we felt less stressed about our taxes. We aren't freelancers, but we moved to New York during the tax year and wanted to make sure we did the part-time residency aspects right. I will never go anywhere else for my taxes. Rus, the owner, is amazing - though I've worked with Marci, too, and she's great. I'm a freelance copywriter and Brass Taxes knows everything I can write off and even held my hand through making quarterly tax payments. Being new to freelance, they have answered so many emails for me the past six months I really feel like they should have charged me more. If you work in an even remotely creative industry (advertising, teaching, artists, etc) GO HERE. It's reasonably priced, you can Skype if you don't want to go to Brooklyn or live out of town (I'm moving to LA and will continue to use them), you get a better refund than the chain places like H&R Block, and don't sweat the fee - it's tax deductible the following year!UPDATE:I just want to say that several years later I'm still using these guys. Currently doing my 2016 return with them so that reminded me to update. I actually left NYC and moved back to Detroit and Rus helps me remotely. After seeing all the good reviews about Brass Taxes on Yelp me and my husband decided to file our 2013 taxes with them and we're so glad we did! We had our appointment with Marci, who was super nice. fun and knowledgable, and helped us with some questions we had because taxes for freelancers can get very complicated. I really like how their website is set up, basically you send all your tax info to them before the appointment so once you are there all you have to do is go through it to verify that everything is correct.Marci was also very patient with the fact English isn't my first language, explained everything very well and also gave us good advice regarding tax write-offs, expenses, etc for next year.Their prices are super reasonable too, we'll definitely be back next year and I'm recommending them to all my freelance friends. These folks are the best!I had a terrible experience with getting my 2012 taxes prepared by a firm in Manhattan and having everything done by Brass Taxes for 2013 was like a breath of fresh air. I met with Erin at their new office on Dean St and everything was very fast and streamlined, but I didn't feel like she was trying to rush me out of the door. She took the time to go over some specific questions I had for the next year and even did a little research and got back to me via email about some stuff that she wasn't able to immediately answer. Rus is simply great. Taxes are a headache. Especially if you just started a small business for the first time or you are an artist with a lot of questions about write offs. Rus gets it, his prices are very fair and he can do appointments in person or on Skype if you moved to California like me. I have had my taxes done by Rus three years in a row and I am confident he got me the greatest return for the least headache. He likes artists and teachers and isn't a schmuck. Usually, I do my taxes myself, but this year my situation was a bit complex. I lived and worked, and was taxed, outside the US for part of the year, and had self-employment income in the US for the rest of the year. I didn't want to take any chances getting it wrong, so I searched online and found Brass Taxes, and the reviews and testimonials indicated they were the right folks for the job. I submitted all of my documentation online via their superb website, and set up an appointment a few days later. I met with Rus, who was very kind, approachable, knowledgeable, and efficient, and I was out of there within an hour with a confirmation email from the IRS indicating my 1040 was successfully submitted. Rus has done my taxes for four years. In that time I've worked three different W-2 jobs alongside countless gigs as an independent contractor. He's always kept it easy, affordable, professional, and, to as great an extent as tax preparation can be, fun!I used to be mystified by deductions and played it safe, but I'm no longer afraid to report every honest cent and keep as much of my earnings as possible. I found Brass Tax online, and decided to go in part due to their perfect 5-star reviews on Yelp. I always take these with a grain of salt, but I now realize the 5 -stars is only due to the fact that these reviews don't go up to 11! Rus was extremely helpful (and quick to respond) by email, and his website is very user-friendly. In person Rus is friendly, funny, and completely relatable. But none of that would matter if he wasn't great with my taxes. And he most definitely was! He explained everything each step of the way (he's a great communicator!), gave me options, and really demystified the whole process. From my experience tax people can be bitter and unhealthy and they make your tax experience more of a nightmare than it already is. Not with Rus. He knew just how to keep me calm, playing the coolest jams whilst talking to me almost like a psychologist. His walls are painted a very relaxing shade and he's got some cool wall paper too. But beyond having a taste for design and music, he knows how to do my taxes! And when i forgot to print them out at the end of all this, months later, he sent me a pdf so I could have them. Had a great experience with Brass Taxes - highly recommend them! This year we had a complicated return involving multiple cities, states and countries. Brass Taxes made it easy first to upload the documents, then to have a consultation over Skype to finalize the return.Rus also presented us with a few scenarios he had considered to assure us that he identified the best way for us to file, and utilize the credits available to us. Last year, after a not-so-great experience with another tax preparer, I was trying to find a new person to help with my taxes and almost as if an answer from the Universe, I came across a flyer for Brass Taxes in Brooklyn. I checked out the website, made an appointment, and really loved how easy it was to work with Rus and what an awesome tax guy he is! He played some cool music, asked me some questions and in no time had my taxes done and I was on my way! After that great experience, I also went to Rus to get help with some LLC questions I had, and in general always seem to have some random, ridiculous questions (I sometimes feel like an annoying 5-year old with all of my "what about this, what about that" questions), but Rus either digs in and finds the answer, or points me in the direction of someone who would be able to better answer non-tax related questions. This year I'm traveling overseas, but was able to send Rus all my tax stuff, he worked his tax preparation magic and sent me everything back prepared and ready to go. He also helped me out with my estimated taxes for this year, which for some reason is my tax achilles heel, and it has been awesome having the stress of figuring that out off my back!I highly recommend anyone to use Brass Taxes. Russell is a charming, intelligent and dare I say, funny, tax preparer.But most importantly, Rus takes the horrifying stuff that creative types wince, shirk and scowl at - namely forms, ugly rows of numbers, glaring empty boxes and the like - and transforms it into a tidy piece of government paper that says you're a bonafide human being who pays their taxes correctly.
