I always recommend Bastille as the best restaurant in Alexandria/DMV for quality of food and service. They offer interesting menus which change from time to time. We've eaten at many good restaurants around the world and Bastille is at the top of our list. Their prix fix menus for special events offer a sufficient selection in each category to the eater's taste or likes. More...

It is always a pleasure to eat at Bastille. I live in Charlottesville and love it so much that I make the drive.

Have eaten here before and very impressed by food, quality, and service. However, even though the food was top notch, every dish well prepared and delicious, the service was lacking. I have eaten in Paris several times and service I know can be a little relaxed. However, we waited for 10-15 minutes for plates to be cleared and another 10 for the next course. We finally had to tell our waitress that we had another commitment and needed to be out of the restaurant within 45 minutes. We were on course 2 of a 4 course meal. Our waitress was a delight and very professional and polite, but it think it was a kitchen and management issue. Needed more wait staff or clearing staff. The kitchen could have prepared food in a more efficient manner in order to service the house quickly especially given it was a price fixed menu. The cost was $95 + wine + tax + tip per person. So, at that cost to the consumer everything should be 5 stars across the board. More...

Always a great time. Good food with a good selection balance. Beet salad is something I could eat every day! Wonderful way to spend part of New Year’s Eve.

Well flavored food, excellent service without being annoying. Their 3 course fixe price was a good value. Salmon was just a tad overdone. Terrific profiteroles filled with ice cream and topped with fresh chocolate sauce. We went early and were glad that we did as the dining room filled up, but our round table made conversation stay relatively audible. More...

This is our favorite restaurant in the MDV. We have traveled much and been to many fine restaurants over the years--Bastille is TOPS. One of the distinctive features is the eclectic cocktail menu with regular changes to what's on call. More...

We ate in the bar to take advantage of happy hour cocktails then ordered from the dinner menu. Although the bar was fairly empty, it was a bit loud. Next time we'll eat in the dining room where there is carpet. More...

Ambiance and service are fine. Unfortunately, the food, both my dish and that of my companion, were way too salty.

Thanksgiving at Bastille was a wonderful away-from-home experience for us, two senior Tucsonans. We can rave about the food and service on the fixed price, three-course meal. The ambiance is fine/casual and quiet enough to converse easily and privately, without intruding into the acoustic space of adjoining tables. The wine list is broad yet well managed, and the prices are reasonable at about 2.5x retail. Wines by-the-glass are stated as a standard 6 oz pour. Would we recommend and come back? Yes, and yes. Great brunch -- Salmon Benedict and a super-rich Croque Madame, with first-rate fries. Took quite awhile for our dishes to come out, so the house comped us to two glasses of bubbly. No problem waiting: Terrific clarinetist played all the while. We'd go back just for the music, which hasn't been available at our other brunch spots in Alexandria. More...

Love the restaurant overall. Be sure to request your preferred seating by table # if possible. We did just by description & got a nice table but not our preferred as frequent diners.

Had not been here in a bit and was pleased to find that it was still as good and maybe better than I remembered. I had the 3course fixed price menu with the Caesar salad, steak frites and profiteroles for desert; my husband had the cassoulet special. A lovely bottle of nicely priced Albariño complimented it all. Out server was pleasant and attentive. We will definitely add this back to our regular date night rotation. More...

We've been going to Bastille for years and loved the old location. The new location lacks the same worn in vibe and seems too sterile. Maybe because it was Sunday or the sous-chef was running the back of the house, but the food was off for what we've come to expected of Bastille. 1. Escargot was cloyingly garlicky. 2. Both salads were over salted and 60 deg. eg was left in the Sous-vide too long / high. 3. Risotto too al dente to the point of being raw in the middle of half the grains. 4. Duck breast was seven minutes past medium rare to the point of well done and no skin which may have lead to a well-done duck breast. 5. Accompanying reduction was acidic as if white vinegar was added at the last moment and not cooked out. 6. Nutella crepe was previously made and then assembled for service which results in a tough, dried out, and flavorless crepe. 7. At least the wine was good. More...

Food as always is excellent, warm welcome, and generally nice service- however, this time we actually were looking for our server and realized there was no server at all in the dining room. We had indicated we wanted to switch from white to red with our main course. After waiting a couple of minutes after our main course was served I got up to go toward where we could see servers by the kitchen. But for that glitch, it would have been a 5 rating for service. Perhaps our favorite restaurant in Old Town BUT last two visits have been disappointing. Lamb was thin and somewhat fatty slices. Not many, either. Ordered the same thing back in June and it was a generous and meaty, either leg or rack - I forget which. Also, our server disappeared and didn’t come back to ask if we wanted another glass of wine until our dinner plates were removed. Yes, we wanted another glass but not after we’d finished our meal. I hope Bastille’s problems are just temporary. We’ll wait for a while until we go back. More...

Bastille is a delightful and consistently reliable neighborhood brasserie offering delicious meals at reasonable prices. Servers are attentive and incredibly friendly without being overbearing. The noise level permits easy table conversations which enhance the dining experience. Our recent visit to Bastille included salads (the Betteraves, Oranges and Chevre Chaud is a perfect start to dinner) with sea scallops and rack of lamb for our entrees. The wine list offers a variety of nicely priced selections and the dessert menu includes plates easily shared if one is looking for a light and tasty finish to the meal. Bastille is a true neighborhood gem for those desiring a more tranquil alternative to the King Street restaurant/bar scene. More...

The restaurant has the look and feel of a Parisian bistro or a Restaurant in smaller city. The food was uniformly excellent. Some of the servers were inexperienced and a few times forgot the cutlery when serving the course. The table of 4 adult women behind us were having a loud get together as if they were alone. It was the only distraction. Getting back to the food, each course was an excellent version of some classic- actually better than the classic. More...

Highly recommend. The wait staff is professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. The music was a little strange and unexpected when we first arrived, but after a few songs became the sophisticated music we usually enjoy as background. The creamy gazpacho was delicious, the salmon over risotto was rich and comforting, and the hazelnut crepes were a dream. Had a very nice Riesling too. Not a drop of food or drink was left. The price was very satisfying also. Will return soon. More...

We went Sunday night over the long weekend and sat outside on the patio. The meal was what I have come to expect from this wonderful little French bistro on the outskirts of Potomac Yards. We had the 3-course Restaurant Week menu, with a very smart twist. Instead of having to order the Appetizer-Entree-Desert, for those who are not desert oriented (like me), you could instead order 1 appetizer and 1 salad/soup from the list. I went with that option. First course was the wonderful Escargot Provencales. An abundant portion of the little critters, sauteed in a broth of garlic, shallots, tomato and basil pesto. Yum! Second course, was the soupe du jour, which was a thick, creamy Gazpacho. Also yummy! The entree was not the special filet I had ordered, as they had run out. Instead I had the Steak Frittes, which was superbly grilled, perfect medium temperature, sliced against the grain, covered with a seductive Cabertnet-shallot gravy, and accompanied by a perfectly dressed watercress salad and wonderfully crispy pommes frites. Never missed the desert, and the service was extra attentive. We had a bottle of 2016 Louis Jadot Pinot Noir (which we brought, they have a very reasonable $25 corkage fee). All around a highly memorable meal!! More...
