Derek and Lisette are experts at training dogs to learn to obey their owners. We've had them help us with a variety of obedience related issues for both our puppies and every time they show us how to instill a sense of respect that dogs don't necessarily have for their owners. Dogs are amazing animals that are great companions, but they need training to learn how to behave. And we humans need training to understand how to properly communicate with our furry friends. If they aren't properly trained they can exhibit problematic behaviors and they wind up being blamed for these behaviors. But as Derek and Lisette teach us, it's not the dog's fault, it is the owner's failure to teach proper behavior and boundaries. As first time dog owners of a French Bulldog and and English Bulldog, we've had quite a bit of a learning curve. Without Bark Busters we would have continued to struggle and not known how to get our pups to behave. The BB method works. In addition to a solid training method, Derek and Lisette are always available to help out if your dog is struggling with issues such as resource guarding and marking, etc. They quickly respond and provide help as soon as they can. They teach you how to train your dog and offer excellent advice related to nutrition and the health for your dogs. I highly recommend Derek and Lisette to train your dogs. More...

First off, anyone to say this is a SCAM, SCAM, SCAM, is sadly mistaken. Although their  fee of $1000 does seem scary at first glance, once all the benefits are explained, it appears to be a no brained. Bark busters will charge you a ONE TIME fee of $1000 to train your fur baby for LIFE. I adopted a cockapoo puppy who had SEVERE separation anxiety and Randy helped me to understand where my puppy's anxiety was coming from and how to best help him through the struggle. Now he is the HAPPIEST he has ever been. In relation to the review who claimed that the "$300 booking fee" was a scam, that $300 goes towards the overall $1000 fee to train your baby for life. LIFE. That means that if my precious Theo were to develop another behavioral issue later in life, bark busters would come to the rescue at NO EXTRA COST, whether that be months or years later. And even if I moved out of the Reno area, I could establish myself with the next local  bark busters and pick up where I left off....AT NO COST. I have zero bad words to say about this company. Randy (I have yet to meet Kayla however I had also heard amazing things about her) has brought Theo's inner puppy out, the puppy who is loving and loyal and the sweetest boy in the world. I will be forever greatful. I could pay $600 for a training session that lasts 10 weeks with another company...but if that doesn't work, then I'm screwed out of $600 and a puppy who has the same issues that he had before. Bark busters makes a LIFETIME commitment to ensuring you and your fur baby will spend  a stress free, joy-filled life together. More...

I have had only great experiences working with Jenny. She is responsive to our needs and communicates quickly and effectively. While our dogs have minor behavioral problems compared to really aggressive dogs, we have noticed a great improvement with the techniques she has shown us. We have seen great improvements when it comes to rushing at the front door, barking at any little noise, fighting over food and toys, and especially walking on the leash. My older dog had gotten into a fight with my mom's dog over a toy as well as my friend's dog without being provoked. That was the tipping point to getting professional help. That has not happened since as we have learned the tools to intervene and prevent it as soon as we see warning signs. The techniques have also applied well to all other dog interactions we have had. Now, he can play with both of the dogs he had previous issue with without any worry. My older dog also had a horrible fear of the Roomba to the point where we couldn't use it because he would get bloody diarrhea from stress. Working with Jenny helped us relieve his stress and we can now use it with minimal fuss or concern from him. We had tried everything before that the vet had recommended (mainly putting treats on the Roomba to get a good association and trying to run it until he got used to it) and it wasn't until Jenny's help that we were able to get him calm. She has also helped us with his separation anxiety and he now walks perfectly on the leash. She has helped with general behavior training with both of our dogs. Like any type of training, consistency is key and relaxing for too long will allow them to fall back into bad habits. I found that my verbal corrections stopped working with my older dog when I was relaxing with the rest of his training. It's all correlated. With Jenny's help, training my puppy has been so much easier than I thought it would be. We have gotten her to come to us when called significantly faster than our older dog. She is not without her challenges as she is much more strong-willed than our older dog.Jenny is great. She is kind, caring to our dogs, and very educational. We really appreciate all that she has done to help us and our dogs. They are less stressed and much happier knowing where they are in the pack as are their humans.I referred Jenny to our friends whose dogs would not stop pulling on their leashes even if it would choke them. She helped them learn how to walk with slack in the leash and minimal pulling. I highly recommend her. More...

We have our moments but I'm definitely less frustrated with him because I know how to fix the problem. He still gets really excited about other dogs and even people sometimes, but that's also why people (and I) love him so much, because he's just so friendly and happy! I feel like my relationship with him has improved and after a suggestion to change his food, things have just continued to get better, it's crazy! I would have never thought. Life changing!!!! In just 2 hours my 7 month old crazy puppy totally transformed. I always new my dog was calm and a big baby, but you'd never know it by how he behaved when we were on leash. Justin had me walking with my pup RIGHT BY MY SIDE the entire time right away. This was HUGE for me! Walks had turned into a stressful situation for both of us. Justin's methods work like magic. It's a little weird how fast it works when everyone tells you you have to send them away or use treats, clickers or punishment - not true! He really is a dog whisperer. Not to mention my dog has food allergies & he brought over some raw food for him to try (how nice!) & gave me the info so I can order it myself. I can't wait to keep working with Justin in the future. He makes you and your dog feel comfortable during the whole thing. If you're reading this - stop searching. This is the dog trainer you need. Where can I begin....well for starters we have a 6 year old pug, Duke. We moved from a different state to CA a couple of years ago. When we were back home Duke went to doggy daycare and we thought we did everything right, except for one thing he would be extremely aggressive towards strangers, so anyone entering our home if we took him on a walk, etc. Now his aggressive would be lunging, barking, doing the pug scream. I'm not sure if you've ever heard a pug scream but it's intense. So we moved out here for the weather, and what comes with the weather...more activities. We are very active, always going on walks, except we kept running into the issue of having to pick him up if we walked past anyone or hope that he would ignore the individuals passing us by. It was so bad that we tried to have friends over and he just barked the entire time and would jump up aggressively. The moment, I know everyone has the moment was when I took him on a quick walk and I was on my way home, when a lady was close by and said "Oh what a cute pug". 3...2...1 pug scream and lunging, this was right in front of our place, and a neighbor said, "I'm glad that isn't my dog". In the famous words of Bridget Jones..that was the moment. I did so much research as I didn't want to try just any trainer and traumatize Duke and go backwards. So, I found Justin when I found Justin I spoke with his assistant, and he told me that Justin could fix any issue. Honestly, I was willing to try anything, it was so stressful for Duke and he was always so protective. He's such an amazing dog, and it was so hard to tell people as he was pug screaming that he's really sweet and the best dog ever once you get to know him. So fast forward, Justin came over and we had Duke in a separate room while we met with Justin, and I honestly wasn't sure what to expect, but I wasn't expecting to see such a change in Duke in those couple of hours. Justin took Duke's behavior and taught us how to correct it in a healthy way where we are the "pack master" which is so important. We never had these tools, and I felt like I failed my dog. He is the best dog ever, and is now soooo well behaved. We go on walks, and I have conversations with people and he just stays by my side the whole time and is so quiet and well behaved. People will pet him, and he doesn't lunge, he's just chill and so sweet. He's the way he is around us, in public. We have now had people in our home since he was trained, strangers as in a handyman, etc. Duke greeted and inspected each individual aka sniff and walked away. Duke walks alongside me now on every walk, he doesn't pull ahead, it's magic. So in conclusion, I am so grateful, and if I could give Justin a million stars I would. Our lives have changed in such an amazing way! We even had my inlaws in town for a visit, and I had them walk Duke by themselves, and they passed people and Duke ignored them completely and just enjoyed the walk. Thank you Justin, we are so happy and Duke is the happiest pug ever! Cheers! More...

Justin is truly a miracle worker! If you have been told that your dog is a lost cause and/or failed at obedience classes, give Bark Busters a call! First, let me describe my dog's prior behavior. I have a 1.5 year old Belgian Malinois who was purchased on Craigslist by a previous owner and has already had 3 prior owners. He is a sweet angel at home but would become very aggressive on the leash towards other dogs or people who caught him off guard. He had broke through THREE gentle leaders from lunging at other dogs/people, jumped out of a screened bedroom window, nipped at strangers, and more. I signed Lucky up for obedience school at a reputable Obedience Club in SD and the trainer pulled me aside to ask if I really wanted this dog because he was going to be a liability and assured me he would stay skittish and aggressive because it was his personality and that I'd never be able to take him in public with friends, etc. (I believe she was trying to be helpful with her honest, professional opinion and years of experience, but luckily, she proved to be wrong- thanks to Justin ) We did not go to another training class because we had to stay so far away from the group, that I couldn't even hear what was being said. Next, Justin came to the house. Within minutes, Lucky was behaving in a way I had not seen before. He was immediately obedient to Justin's approach. Justin was patient in teaching his technique (although it is very easy) and answering every question I had about Lucky's list of behaviors. He even offered to Skype if I had any questions/needs when I move to Nebraska this winter. As soon as Justin left, I put my skills to the test and Lucky is a whole new dog!! I could never dream of how calm he is on the leash! It is amazing. As a dog parent, it will melt your heart to see your previously-stressed dog at ease. I would highly, highly recommend Bark Busters and Justin to any struggling dog owner. Your dog will thank you!! (Pics for cuteness) More...

Scheduling an appointment and working with Justin was the BEST investment I could have ever made in my two rescue dogs. In just two hours, Justin completely changed the dynamic in my household, and showed me how to be the pack leader of my two dogs who were consistently showing aggressive and reactive behaviors. I had been feeling extremely hopeless for a long time and would rarely ever take my dogs out of the house for fear that they would cause a problem. After the first session with Justin, it was as though I had completely different dogs. I have never been more excited about my life with my two rescues. I look forward to our daily walks and no longer fear that the worst might happen. I had reached out to one trainer before finding Justin and Bark Busters, and this individual wanted to charge me twice as much for only six weeks of work, with no guarantee anything would be solved in this time. What really sold me about Bark Busters (and Justin) was that I have Justin's support and guidance for the life of both of my dogs. He also provided me the necessary tools and equipment to train my dogs during the first lesson. It was obvious that Justin really cared about helping me and my dogs. At one point during the session, I became so overcome with emotion and excitement because I couldn't believe what was happening, and I could tell Justin was just as happy for us. I have never been so blown away by one individual, and I am so grateful that I found him!I would strongly advise anyone who feels hopeless and like they have no other options to call Justin and Bark Busters. I can't even begin to explain how grateful I am that I found him! More...

Justin is a miracle worker! We have a very fearful & protective pittie/mastiff mix, who has shown clear signs of abuse from a previous owner. Every since adopting him, he has been aggressive towards strangers, particularly older men, and extremely leash reactive to both humans & dogs. He would also bark & swarm the door anytime someone knocked on it. It is safe to say taking him on walks, prior to our first training session, was extremely stressful for both us, and our boy Kane, who is nothing but a massive sweetheart with people he knows & trusts. We have also had to be extremely careful introducing him to new people, which we have tried to avoid most of the time. We are providing this review after just ONE training session...we can't express how amazed we are with the progress that was made in just 2-2.5 hours. Our pup is no longer pulling on the leash, his leash reactivity has significantly diminished, and he is responding immediately to everything we do with him. He is clearly so much calmer and less stressed out, and so are we! Justin definitely knows how to "speak dog"; it's like magic! On top of that, Justin does an amazing job explaining the training techniques thoroughly & affectively. He is super personable and easy to communicate with. Additionally, he is super easy to reach over the phone - checks in with us and is there for us for any questions/help. We have to admit, we were super skeptically going into this...it's a lot of money to provide at one time, and the reviews honestly seemed too good to be true. We are here to tell you that this isn't bullshit; othis is the real deal! Worth every penny, and again, that's just after one session. Thank you, Justin & Bark Busters, for everything you have provided for us so far! You guys rock! -Sydney, Gerson & Kane More...

I adopted sweet little, Molly a couple of months ago from a homeless woman who was unable to care for her anymore.  Molly was nearly perfect.  She is great with people, really great with kids, and with other dogs at the dog parks of all sizes.  However, on leashed walks, she became a crazy little girl and a nightmare to work with.  Plus, she would sniff at every little thing and scavenged the ground constantly.  I was frustrated and at my wit's end.  I tried treats and everything I knew how to do.  Nothing was working.Thankfully, I stumbled across Justin's Yelp page.  The reviews were a bit unbelievable, but how could so many people have similar results?  I'm SO glad I found him!  He has changed my life with Molly.  It has been a little over 24 hours now and our afternoon walk was so peaceful and beyond enjoyable.  We passed several dogs and she only reacted to a couple of them and tried to sniff a few times.  But I used his easy technics and got immediate results. I didn't have to do repetitive routines hoping one day she would really "get it"!  She is much more at peace at home, too.  I now have a completely different dog.      Justin also gave me clear direction and the confidence to be the pack leader.  He did tell me this would solidify my bond with her.  He couldn't be more right!  I'm excited about our future and know it will be full of love, and awesome experiences and fun adventures together.  Many thanks, Justin, for all you did for Molly and me. Justin did such a great job with our two Border Collies, Harvey and Nagini. He treated them as if they were his own.Our dogs had a habit of pulling on the leash during walks, lunging at cars/bikes/motorcycles, and nipping at people among a few other behavior issues. We were worried that they would either get hurt or hurt someone else. Both dogs warmed up to Justin quickly and took the training well. Justin uses training that doesn't cause any pain to the dog which we loved. We were worried that the dogs would forget what they learned the following day but we were surprised that they both did an amazing job on their walk in the morning. No pulling or lunging at cars. We are still amazed that there is such a HUGE difference in their behavior from only one training session. Justin taught us how to tell if they are in their green, yellow or red zone and how to correct them if they get out of the green zone. The training we need to do with the dogs on a daily basis has been easy and effective. He also made sure to correct us if we weren't doing something right with the training. Justin checked up on the progress the following day and has made himself available whenever we need help or have any questions. In addition, he provided us with step by step guidelines to make sure we continue to be successful in our training. Justin helped me with my boxer/beagle mix with some fear/anxiety issues and a chihuahua who loves to bark. My feisty 10--OK 12--pound chihuahua mix barks at strangers when they enter my home, or stand up, or leave the room and come back. Anyone bigger than her she would immediately scold. Justin gave me training tools (like a mesh beanie bag with some weights in it) to redirect her focus from the barking back to me. He showed me videos of how a mom-dog growls at her babies to teach them good behavior. This was so eye opening because I have always coddled them without asserting myself as leader of the pack. By the end of our talk (1 hourish), Peter stopped reacting to his movements and always looked at me for direction. She still barks when I come home or when people come over, so I am continuing to use the training tools that Justin gave me and work on it day by day. My boxer/beagle mix is a different story. She is very nervous and fearful and doesn't enjoy walking outdoors because every noise and foreign object scare her. Right from the get-go, Justin made sure my expectation from him was clear. He could help with some things, but that truthfully she just may be a nervous dog and that I should just pay attention to how she reacts and learn from them. He helped with our walking by using a bridle-type head collar that has worked wonders on Pluto. After experiencing some difficulty, Justin even came back a second time to see what was going on and told me I needed to be more strict with the leash (I was kind of letting her walk me).  I'm already seeing major improvements but I know I can't slack off and that dog training is moreso training the owners than the dogs. As a side note, Justin charges relatively high prices, but it is NOT a scam, he LOVES what he does and the dogs he helps. After my initial consultation, he even recommended a different plan that was a fraction of the price his assistant quoted me because of the specific issues I wanted help with. Plus Justin is super easygoing and that made the lessons less intimidating or judgmental than maybe it could have gone with another trainer. More...

Derek and Lizette have changed our lives! When Wagging Tails Rescue united me with my fur baby, I was overjoyed. About a month after rescuing my stubborn Great Pyrenees she starting displaying extreme protective behavior over the house and me resulting with aggressive behavior towards other dogs and men. She had severe anxiety, was barking non stop, and was out of control on walks to the point where I was afraid to walk her. Derek and Lizette taught me how to train my dog and how to communicate with her so that she would respond to my commands. At first I was self-conscious to make the growling "BAH" sound to correct unwanted behavior and didn't listen to the training they provided. I was losing hope and thinking about returning Sadie to the rescue. After a second training session I changed my perspective and decided to buckle down with the training they were instilling. It wasn't easy and it took about 4 months of dedicated training to see results. Following their guidelines I have seen incredible results with my dog. Amazing! Within 1-2 sessions my dog Maci already made changes. And within 3-4 sessions she's a whole new dog and has improved a ton! It's so nice to see something work quickly, as long as you put the work in. Lissette has always answered my texts quickly with any questions I have about training. Would highly recommend! More...

I love Bark Busters Frederick County! My Dog and I have learned new “tricks” to a calmer life! Nothing beats in home “counseling”. Glad I found them!

First of all, I want to say that, although this is expensive, it's worth every penny because you WILL get the dog you've always wanted if you follow the program. It's truly amazing how well this works!! We had tried many different dog training programs and most of them used treats to motivate and teach good behavior. Well, that just didn't work with my pup Lily. She would get so excited about the treats, that's all she paid attention to. She would expect to be paid with a treat every time she complied with my directions. And, needless to say, I didn't always have a treat on hand. And I wanted her to pay attention to ME, whether I had a treat for her or not. Secondly, her behavior was uncontrollable. She wouldn't walk calmly on a leash. She pulled like crazy, whether we used a collar or harness, and nothing we tried would calm her down. I even tried the Gentle Leader head harness, which is supposedly foolproof, but that didn't work either. She wouldn't even respond to treats, she was so out of control on a walk. And when she turned 6 months old, she found her voice. Ugh! Up to that point she never barked. But all of a sudden she started barking at everything. She became hyper vigilant and would run to the windows and bark loudly and constantly at anything: leaves blowing in the wind, rain, an airplane, a car, an open garage door down the street, a piece of trash outside on the grass... Anything would set her off. And people or dogs or cats outside would send her into a frenzy! It was getting truly unbearable. We couldn't talk on the phone or watch TV without being interrupted by her loud barking. We had no peace. Using words like "No" or "Quiet" had little effect on her. We obviously had a problem. We love Lily very much. She's our sweet little girl! But this behavior was affecting our relationship with her, and we were running out of patience. So I did a Yelp search for personal dog trainers and saw the good reviews for Bark Busters. I called the local number and heard about their approach. They do not use treats for training. They would teach us how to communicate with Lily so she understands and respects us. We would have our baby back, and they would be there to help us for life. For life! It almost sounded too good to be true, but we were desperate. When Kayla came over, she was a wealth of information! Before even bringing Lily out to meet her, she told us about how nutrition plays a big part in a dog's behavior. She examined the food we were feeding her, and recommended a diet higher in protein and lower in carbs. Carbs were getting Lily too hyped up. What a revelation! Then Kayla worked on some training with us and I could see Lily responding right away! It was truly miraculous. Of course we were given homework on how to use the techniques correctly. I won't lie, it certainly takes practice. And an investment of your time and energy. But after a few weeks, there is a major change in Lily. She is much calmer. She pays attention to us, always looking to us for approval (which is awesome!). She usually only barks now as a quick alert, and then stops. Walking calmly with her is going to take awhile longer, though. But she has already shown marked improvement. We are very happy with the progress she's made, and in such a short time!Lastly, you do need to know that Kayla doesn't do the work for you. It's important that you be the one building this new relationship with your dog. It's all based on respect, and it's going to require work on your part. But I can promise you, it really works IF you work it! More...

I would never have believed it if I did not experience it myself.  I worked with Justin one day, and the next day I had the best walks I have ever had with our extremely energetic chocolate lab, Otis. Otis's energy level, combined with the fact that he is a strong, solid 80 pounds of dog who does have a history of reacting to other dogs, made life challenging.  We had previously worked with a different trainer without much luck, so I was becoming quite frustrated.  When Justin arrived, I could not believe how quickly and thoroughly he understood Otis and what we needed to do with him. Justin seems to honestly have instinctual insight and he genuinely loves dogs and loves working with them. He provided very clear, easy to understand instructions, and was encouraging and patient as I practiced the techniques that he explained. I also have recorded instructions and print outs to help me remember and feel confident in what I am doing. I also really appreciated his explanations of the reasoning for the techniques he taught me. It makes sense and gives me the satisfaction that I am doing right by Otis. I am seriously relieved that I am now able to set and maintain boundaries that enable me to enjoy our walks and interactions at home. What a relief! No matter your dog or situation, Justin is definitely the trainer for you! More...

Kayla is as good as they come. She is responsive, friendly, knowledgeable, and has a heart of gold. (I've not yet met Randy but I'm sure he's a peach too. ) We had our first training session for our new pup with Kayla and we feel prepared to guide our new family member in the right direction. I have used Bark Busters training for my old dogs and the techniques work like a charm!  Since it's been 14 years since I've gone through the training, we thought we'd be proactive and get help right away with our new pup. Kayla has helped with building leadership, kennel training, walking, distance control, separation anxiety, antagonistic behavior toward other pet, and potty training...and we've only had one training session so far! Training your pet the right way is time and energy consuming, but I feel well-equipped with Kayla as my consultant. I am lucky to have found this dynamic duo! They come highly recommended and so do the training techniques! More...

I don't write a lot of reviews but Sharon is worth it.  My dog is a rescue from the shelter and was very hyper and filled with anxiety.  All that I can say is Wow!  My dog responded so well to her training and she trained us as well.  It's unbelievable how much was accomplished in her visit.  I also love the training in my home, which is a familiar setting for my dog. I would definitely recommend Sharon for anyone who is considering training their dog. More...

I adopted a one and a half year old lab-shepherd-rottweiler mix about a month ago. His behavior seemed to be getting worse instead of better and we needed to figure out how to be the "alphas" in the pack. I can't believe how quickly Scott's training worked. Our first lesson was one hour and I can already see a huge difference in his behavior and demeanor. I am incredibly impressed and can't wait to see how the next few days (and weeks) go if we saw this much change this quickly. Obviously it is up to the humans to be consistent, but the dog figured it out immediately. More...
