As a wedding planner, when my couple asked for something unique, delicious and fun for their wedding meal, we started discussing using food trucks instead of traditional catering. They loved the idea from the start, and I knew that Backyard BBQ was going to be a perfect fit for what they wanted. Eric was beyond wonderful to work with, the food was amazingly delicious (as always), and serving the guests via the food trucks was so much smoother than I anticipated. Fall off the bone ribs, scrumptious brisket and boneless wings that don't look like nuggets-real stuff real good. Order at the counter and prepare to need the paper towels on the table.

Good solid barbecue. Had the brisket sides of beans and cheesy hash-browns. All very good. Meat juicy and flavorful. Their beans were excellent, nicely spicy. Hands down best of their sauces to go with brisket is the bourbon sauce. Partner had brisket also, but with coleslaw and cornbread. Cornbread ok, but not the dense corny goodness you get in the south. Coleslaw really good, creamy with just enough vinegar to make a great pairing with barbecue. Not sure why the title says this place is closed... according to their website and Facebook page they are still open as of March 2017. It used to be in a tiny, slightly run-down building across from the water park, but in the last two years or so they moved to the strip mall to the east of Buffalo Wild Wings. So the address change may be the culprit...Backyard Grill is my FAVORITE place to eat in Brookings! I very rarely make a trip without stopping. They have the barbecue basics (pulled pork, brisket, wings, etc) and a ton of sides to choose from. All main plates come with tour choice of two (but if you gets fries they count as two). The meat is delicious. Very juicy and flavorful. You can add sauce at your table. The fries are hand cut and seasoned wonderfully. I recommend the pulled pork sandwich with mac & cheese and cornbread. I love the fries, but the portion size is too much for me. An added bonus, you can get SDSU ice cream (that is made on campus) as one of your sides! I cannot recommend this place enough. Always nice service, clean & industrial atmosphere. I have had two events catered by the BYGrill and the food was excellent, there was some service related confusion the first time but not the second. I also carry out from time to time. Their (old) tiny Brookings location does not work well with a big family to dine in but I am told they are moving to the former Mixed location, a smart move if its true. I love their beef brisket, beans and cornbread. Their sauces are good and I find mixing them gives me the best flavor. While I have not had their wings, friends rave about them. Backyard Grill is a totally unexpected surprise that is definitely worth stopping by to try when you are in the Brookings area. Â Being from the south, I have eaten a lot of different types of BBQ. This one is the real deal and is as good or better than many of the places featured on Food Network or the Travel Channel. Brisket is very, very good. The pulled pork is good solid chunks of BBQ. A lot of places will try to cover up pork BBQ with sauce. No amount of sauce will make bad BBQ taste good. Backyard Grill does not add any sauce to their BBQ pork. It doesn't need it. Â However, they do have several different sauces for you to add as little as or as much as you want. Â As a word of warning, if you add too much sauce you cover up the smoke flavor that they have been working on for several hours during the cooking process. Â Good size portions on meat and sides. The corn bread is even better than my Aunt Sally's and that is saying a lot!The staff is ultra-friendly. I really like that the cooker is outside so you can catch whiff of the meats cooking as you pass by or if you are eating outside. I am looking forward to a return trip to Brookings and trying the ribs- although the brisket and pork is so good I might have get them instead. I have traveled to places like Georgia and Kansas City many times; places that boast the greatest BBQ in the world. Backyard Grill has to be the best BBQ you will be able to dig your grubby little fingers into outside of the ambiguous region known as "The South. " The pit master Al is always adding new items to his menu and adjusting his business according to the tastes of his customers; a fantastic businessman.
