We were ready to remodel our 1972 house and didn't really know where to start. Friends suggested Desia and I am so glad they did. She patiently walked us through everything we needed to do; listened, suggested, visited the house multiple times and introduced me to Pinterest! We are now in the middle of the remodel and the detailed plans provided by Desia have been invaluable. This review is long overdue! I found Desia through Houzz after an architect that we hired didn't work out. We were having a difficult time finding someone that could take our small 1920s kitchen space and maximize it for efficiency and modernize it, but still keep the overall period essence and work within our style parameters. Desia was extremely responsive from the beginning and came up with a design that we were looking for and just weren't able to conceptualize. She was flexible in working with us and provided good design direction in the selection of materials based on the style that we wanted. It was a collaborative effort, which I really appreciated. I was honestly a little skeptical of hiring a designer as I assumed installing a bathroom in the basement to complete our master bedroom would be fairly straightforward, but after seeing her designs I was immediately pleased with our decision. She is very talented and creative, and she was able to see the space in a completely different way, transforming the room into a much more interesting and efficient use of square footage. Working with Desia at Atomic Design was effortless. She helped us add 2 bedrooms and 1 bath to our existing layout. She is extremely thorough with her design from start to finish and takes it all the way through the permit process. I will definately call her again for future projects! I hired atomic design to help me with a major project involving relocating two flights of stairs and a complete kitchen remodel. Desia understood my vision and needs and came up with an elegant, streamlined design that strikes exactly the right balance between user-friendly and guest-shiny. My kitchen looks great, functions beautifully, and I couldn't be happier with how it all turned out. I am a general contractor in the Portland area. I recently have completed a job that was designed by Desia Greybill of Atomic Design. After that was done the same clients used her to design their basement remodel. This has been one of the funnest and most creative jobs I have done for a designer since I have been in Portland. Every Item and detail has been so researched that it has made my life so much easier so I can focus on my aspect of the job of quality control and schedule. I am currently in the middle of doing my second job designed by Desia and loving every minute of it. I enjoy working with her so much I recommended her to a client I am building an ADU for so she could design out the interior. Not surprisingly, my client loved her and she of course designed out a pretty amazing finished product.
In all jobs I look at that involve any bit of design I always recommend Desia to the potential client. She is detailed, thorough, has good sense of the building process and on top of the job at hand and plus a joy to work with. My daughter bought a 120 year old house in Portland. It had a very funky upstairs. My daughter hired Desia from Atomic Design for an upstairs renovation. She provided a beautiful plan that was exactly what my daughter had described. Not only was she knowledgeable on the nuances of an older home but put together a wonderful book with paint colors, tile choice and flooring etc. she helped tremendously with many aspects of this process. Desia from Atomic Design has completed several projects for us between March and Sept, 2013. The first was a remodel of our 1970s main floor bathroom. We had ideas of what we wanted, and through a collaborative process, Desia created designs that we could work from, settling on one that met our needs. She then connected us with a contractor who did fantastic work. We are very happy with the outcome. The next project was a patio and family room remodel. It involved a complete redo of everything but the cement on the patio, extending the patio, and replacing 18 feet of wall with floor to ceiling windows. Again, through a very collaborative design process, Desia was able to produce a design that matched the vision for the space that we'd had since moving into the house 9 years ago. She again was able to connect us with the same contractor who had completed the bathroom work. We are beyond belief with the outcome of the project, both from the design and build perspective. Desia listened to our needs and was careful to design within those parameters. She gave us not only her trained aesthetic eye, but offered practical solutions.

For example: She designed an open kitchen space that was substantially different than what we previously had. To keep costs reasonable, she did this while preserving the location of existing plumbing and major electric work. This helped limit the cost of the overall project. She used high-end materials in small, high visibility areas that improved the overall feel of our remodel, while allowing us to use more affordable materials in less critical area.

This approach lead to a successful remodel with flexible cost that allowed us to adjust the project as the actual remodeling work progressed. More...

Desia from Atomic Design designed 2 projects for us. First was our main floor bathroom. We were so pleased with her design (still to this day I walk into the bathroom and think how cool it is), we then hired Desia to design our kitchen remodel. The kitchen turned out better than we ever imagined. Desia's design made our kitchen seem twice as big even though we added no square footage. I worked with Desia to design my 700 sqare foot basement remodel to add a bedroom, full bath, office space, and storage. We started from bare bones, and she came up with a wonderfully functional layout that she easily tweaked based on some specifics that I wanted. I was on a budget as well, so she helped me figure out the best use of existing plumbing and electrical to save on overall costs. When I took the architectural drawings in to the permitting office, even they were impressed with her work.

I'm really happy with the layout and space and get a lot of compliments from guests on how cozy and welcoming it is. She made me realize how affordable professional design can be and in the face of all construction costs, how critical it is to have someone with her trained eye get it right the first time.
