During COVID this was our lifeline, even before the covered outdoor seating. They have kept the "toast" order system using QR codes post-COVID mostly due to the shortage of staff (ie people who are looking for jobs up here). All in all, staff is excellent and very well-meaning. Food is always outstanding from their homemade menu. Ordering is easy, grab a table, photograph the QR code on the table, follow the prompts...if you have trouble, just pop into the bar and they will help. Loud.  Uncomfortable. Slow. Confusing ordering and seating system. Ridiculous parking situation. Pretty sad what has happened to this place. Unfortunately, not a lot of choices in Twain Harte. Maybe consider going to the grocery store and just buying stuff to make your own dinner? Otherwise, just sort of adjust your expectations. My experience was awful. I hope yours is better. So disappointed.  It doesn't take an hour to make this on a Monday evening.  It's really not yo mommas grilled cheese.  She wouldn't charge you $13 for two slices of bread and enough cheese to feed a hummingbird.  Let's not even talk about the soup, that went straight down the drain.To make matters worse, the bartender on Mondays needs a personality check.  I'm pretty sure her name is Karen, but if it isn't, it probably should be. We've been eating at "The Rock" for years and years.  Great burgers, fries, and beer.  For a long time it was the "go to" place for food in downtown Twain Harte.  BUT... recently we've been avoiding it more.  The food is still good, but the service has gone way down hill.  They added a large out-door dining paddock during the pandemic, which is great, but they didn't expand the kitchen at all.  So, guess what happens when you triple your seating, but don't increase your kitchen capacity.  It now typically takes an hour to get food.  Also, they've moved toward ordering on your phone by scanning a QR code at the table (also a pandemic measure).  But, the reduced involvement by a human server is noticeable.  At our most recent visit, our appetizer and entrees arrived at the same time and our dinner salads showed up after them all.  Pacing of the meal was totally out of order.  Plus we regularly have to go track down our own silverware.  Getting basic table service items like a water refill are hit and miss.  You can order drinks (including free water) via the app and they usually come out pretty quick, but the whole vibe is much more self-serve now.  Which, I would be fine with if I wasn't waiting so long for food to come out.To be fair, there is no longer a wait to get seated.  But, being told "we can't seat you for 45 minutes" kinda lets you decide whether to wait or not at the outset.  Once you order there's an expectation that in 20-30 minutes at the most you're going to have your food.  I would rather they had controlled seating and provided faster service for meals.  They could use their outdoor paddock as a beer garden and allow just drink and limited appetizer orders there -- that doesn't require as high a bar for service, but if I'm looking to have a meal, I want to have some assurance that I'm not waiting an hour after ordering. Good beer menu. Beer came within 5 minutes. Then it went downhill....Water came 45 minutes later. Order of 3 burgers took ONE HOUR! No silverware. No condiments on table. Add on bacon ($4!)  missing from burger. Hard time flagging down a runner, told her, no resolution/never heard back. Ordering using the app means you have no waiter/waitress - just food runners, so no assistance.  Too long of a wait for basic food service. This has happened PRE, during, and post Covid  so no pandemic excuses.  An hour wait for food on several occasions is unacceptable. Walk on over to the golf course and grab the same beer and burger! Understand it was Sunday lunch not called in. First time dining there. Lived here 25+ years. Avoided because of poor word of mouth from friend and neighbors. Tourist trap reputation. Not expediting anything special. Was not wrong. 2 burgers fries, onion rings, small salad. Wow 45$.  For some reason the burgers were put on top of the produce and fries.  Nothing better than under cooked burger juice raining down on produce and greasy soggy fries. Burgers should not bleed when cooked medium. The takeout packaging was extremely poor and not well thought out. So let's sum it up. 35 walk-in minute wait for way overpriced mediocre at best food. Not at all impressed. Gave them 2 stars - well at least they put napkins in the order.The positive was definitely the wait staff. The only reason was rated 3. My cousin has been wanting to go here for 2 years and we finally made the trip after visiting the lake. This place was perfect. Service was friendly, talkative and 11+ customer service. Table was sanitized and were informed that the restaurant was moving towards "QR code service" but that she would be more than happy to take our order at the bar... she made us feel so welcomed and like it was her place, but the owner was actually in the kitchen! I had seen some of the food posted on yelp...and we ordered based upon those pictures. We ordered chicken strips (kids), kobe burger with French onion soup, grilled cheese and mushrooms sandwich with garlic onion rings, trash can nachos and a few beers.The food ranged from 9-9.5 out of 10... customer service was definitely a 11 out of 10! I couldn't stop eating the nachos! So good and the pulled pork was superb! Highly recommend pulled pork. It is cooked perfectly. Had a portion of the hamburger and (was overcooked from requested medium) but had really good flavor. My cousin complained it was too thick, it was perfect size for me. The French fries were good, especially with the ranch. The coleslaw had an unfamiliar flavor but was so good my cousin wanted to lick the bowl! Highly recommend making a trip! We will definitely be back. Did I mention the beer was from a local brewery!!! The bartender even told us where we could go and they have infused vodka and tastings available... soooo sold!. Only beer (maybe wine) is served. No liquor at all. No vegetarian options, except for a basic house salad. I asked for a Chicken Gorgonzola salad without the chicken and they still charged me for the chicken. Service is poor, seems like high school students are the servers so you have to hunt them down to ask for utensils (never provided unless we ask). We had a great experience here, especially after the nightmare from the night before at the steakhouse in town (see earlier review of restaurant in Twain Harte). Service was on time, the food was great, and ordering was easy, using digital scanning of menu. They refilled our drinks and really went out of their way to be helpful, even with a packed restaurant. I've been coming here since 1998. This is the first time I've almost walked out. Went here two nights in a row. First night our burgers were like blah hockey pucks. Second night my daughter didn't get her drink for an hour and only after I asked them. They brought my wine but not her kids drink. Then they brought the cup of soup, then another 15 min we finally got our food. At that point we were so cold (sat outside & heaters do zero) and so hungry we just ate and left. My salmon was ok except for the hair in it. The garlic bread was pretty low effort. Nothing too exciting. Still don't know why it took an hour to bring a kid her Mac & cheese with fries. I've never had such bad service here ever. Don't like the order from your table service. It's just really lost the personal touch and the quality great tasting food we used to love. Really sad to see. The outdoor space is cool but focus on service & food. It's no fun eating with a cold hangry kid. I would of left if we could of but tbh we likely won't be back. As we were heading to the redwoods and to go skiing my hubby says he lived in this small town of Twain Harte and wanted to drive thru. Well we did and decide to stop at this small dive bar/restaurant. Can I just say you will be in for a pleasant surprise - digital ordering, great fresh food and kid friendly meals. I was in heaven- not to mention the drinks were reasonably priced. Things we didn't get to partake in but looked great was the homemade desserts . Meal was not good. My husband ordered the ribs and they were really dry, tough and chewy. My guiness stew had tons of fatty meat, too large chunks of onion and a few carrots. My meal also came luke warm.  The garlic bread was just white bread with masssive chunks of whole garlic and some cheese. No real server to speak of. Definitely the best spot in TH to head to for a good beer and a bite to eat...service is great and the atmosphere is relaxed. ..we like to sit outside in the newly built covered table area outside..it is enclosed and has propane heaters for the colder months ...I usually have a burger ...they're all good and calamari...calamari isn't bad at all for being up in the Sierra's ... the trash can nachos are always good as well ...they literally stuff it all into a large coffee can and pour out at your table ...decent selection of beer s and a super cool owner who is usually on site ...can't go wrong here !
