I have been here a dozen times over the past 20 years, I love it.   Disclaimer - I have always visited with customers and on an expense account.   Therefore, cost has not been an issue as I see in other reviews.   This is old school, down and dirty, dive bar that happens to have a unique way to pick your food, choose how you want it cooked - be warned, there are no prices listed anywhere and it is very easy to get carried away.  So, you walk in and choose your food from a deli style cooler, the chef is behind it doing his thing and can give suggestions.   The old crusty guy can cook, he knows his shit and I have gone with his advise on more than one occasion.   Every cut steak you can think off, lobster, scallops, giant shrimp, crab, stuffed - not stuffed, it goes on and on.    I ordered the bacon wrapped scallops and bacon wrapped shrimp......   Also ordered some stuffed mushrooms with crab.....Holy crap, this is absolutely to die for..........My guest went with a ribeye and I went with the bone-in ribeye.   Let me tell you something, he had not ever heard of this place and when I suggested it, he was there before me and was like, really this place is sketchy.  I just laughed.   After the second or third bite, he was tearing up and said it was one of the best steaks that he had ever had.    My bone-in ribeye was huge, I was like, there is no way that I can ever eat that.  Ten minutes later I was licking the plate.   Funny side note, I asked the bartender server for creamy horseradish and she look at me like I was crazy, but then the voice from heavy (actually the grill) boomed out --- "I got you".    The old crusty chef had a secret recipe for creamy horsey sauce.   It was spectacular........   He came to my table and I busted his balls about the meal and he was beaming with pride.    It was awesome, check out my pics.I love this place, going there every time I visit just makes me happy. Food was great, but expensive. But good ingredients are worth it. Look at the choices in the case, mix and match items are priced ala carte. Crab stuffed, bacon wrapped shrimp, veal porterhouse, fresh bread...Yum!Decorated in vintage baseball gear, football helmets and posters. plenty of seating at the bar, and a few high top tables around the perimeter. 4th Base had one of the coolest bartenders I have ever met. Andy took care of us all 4 nights we were there. Food was excellent (thanks TJ). ..service was great... recommendations were right on (Blues eggs)... Service and chef were awesome. First steak came over cooked but there was no hesitation on their part and the second attempt was perfect. Very good food and service. They technically don't have a menu so they will make whatever you want, but that comes at a higher price than other restaurants. Go check it out though, I'm sure you'll love it More...

The atmosphere was just what were looking for! A "divey" type place with great food. No written menu. Just go to the deli cooler and choose. We enjoyed delicious fresh-made oysters Rockefeller, prawns in bacon. Or choose a fresh cut ribeye or Porterhouse! Of course 4 has the usual bar food too. This place is the best hidden gem in the Milwaukee area.  Whether you want a superb burger or king crab or a big juicy steak, they have have it.  And - they actually fix it the way you want it And you can pick what you want to go with it whether it's fresh veggies or whatever.  We had King crab, we had bacon wrapped shrimp as appetizers which were the best I have ever had!!!  We had garlic buttered grilled asparagus and broccoli.  They gave us a plate of homemade onion straws which were just perfect!!  I can't say enough good about this place.  And - they also have omelets for breakfast that are just out of this world.  A perfectly wonderful bar/restaurant with a casual atmosphere!!  By they way you can pick your food out of the deli case they have.  It's a "must go".   Don't miss it! This place has amazing food. We came an hour before a 7pm Brewers game. It was full, but service was still smooth and food came out quickly. The food itself is amazing. Highly recommend the mozzarella sticks. The "no menu" is a little intimidating, but my husband's fish fry and my bacon cheeseburger were perfection to our requests. We will be returning! More...

I used to frequent 4th Base in the 80's & 90's. Took friends there last night. Hasn't changed, except the pig is nothing more than a relic now. Food was superb. One of my guests said his steak was prepared better than any chophouse. I would agree.4th base is this dingy looking bar with a display cooler of the finest steaks, fish, crab legs, veggies, etc. you will find anywhere in Milwaukee. You point at what you want and tell them how you want it. Awesome atmosphere and food.Our evening was filled with mix ups. But our server (Amanda?) was gratious about everything. The cook (Joe Walsh's dopple ganger in every sense) came to apologize for the mistakes. So cool.It is pricey. Very pricey. An entre is going to set you back $50+ a plate. Add appetizer and drinks and say goodbye to a C note.CJ, you have to get Trip Advisor to change from $$-$$$ to $$$$$.
