I have been there for brunch and dinner. This isn't a place you go to all the time, though we would love to. The food is delicious and so fresh. You BYOB which is fine, saves us money so we can spend it on more food. Everything from appetizers to desserts is amazing. The plating is also beautiful. The servers are knowledgeable and make great suggestions. It's a cozy restaurant and making reservations is a must. They are very busy. You will walk out of there full and happy. What a wonderful dining experience we had last Thursday night! Excellent service, incredibly delicious food, and a toasty, cozy vibe on a cold November night. The salmon carpaccio was absolutely out of this world! One of my favorite things about dinner last night was watching the chef's reaction to his patrons, enjoying our enjoyment. Had a WONDERFUL brunch here today. Have only been for dinner previously, but this was amazing. I had the fried chicken - three HUGE pieces of boneless chicken with amazing flavor and crunch. Second time here for brunch and it was still as good as the first. The ingredients were so fresh, the service was top-notch and the food was just absolutely delicious. We came with a couple friend and between us, we had 3 young children, 2 and under. The staff were incredibly nice and accommodating. For appetizer, we got the hog hash to share which was good, but a bit salty. For entrees, we ordered maple ham and pork schnitzel whereas our friends got the grilled cheese and burger. Personally, I preferred our friends dishes which I tried. I need to go back to get my own order of that grilled cheese and an order of bacon that came with the burger!!! They were AMAZING!! I actually am not a bacon person (it's true) but WOW, that bacon was life changing. Overall, definitely going back! P.S. probably because of the weather, but there were a lot of flies in the bathroom, so head ups for those that are scared of flying bugs. More...

Hackettstown is really becoming a go to place for foodies looking for good new restaurants! Last night was our first time at James On Main and it didn't disappoint! After reading so many positive reviews, it was a lot of fun to finally get there. This is a small, cozy place with a low ceiling, giving it a loud but fun vibe. Some jazz music in the background that you may or may not be able to hear, depending on the volume of the crowd. The service was very friendly, especially our server, Cat. We were a group of 4 and started off with 2 orders of the oysters which were a special appetizer and the artichoke and goat cheese tartlet. Both were great, but I especially liked the oysters. They were just so fresh (as was everything at this farm to table restaurant). We all loved the entrees which ranged from the schnitzel, to the duck, to the swordfish. Oh yes, dessert was also amazing! My wife and I shared a piece of cheesecake made with lemon and lavender. Very different but excellent!Definitely recommend giving James On Main a try, and like others have said, make a reservation because this place was packed on a Saturday night! More...

A safe bet and go-to for any occasion where you want an impressive immersion in high-end cuisine and olfactory bliss. James on Main opens a portal to a dimension of flavor so delicious, if people 100,000 years from now found a time capsule and somehow food would last, they would know that for just a few blinks of an eye, clicks on a plate, and clinks of a glass in mankind's history, we knew joy timeless.

When I go out for New American food, my expectations are high. Many people talk big about farm-to-table and a commitment to local ingredients because that’s what’s trendy right now. Most of these places are ultimately uninspiring. Which is what makes James on Main stand out. I know the farmers who provide their ingredients; it’s the real deal.The sparkling, knowledgeable staff (both front and back of house; it’s an open kitchen) and the consistently inventive, flavorful dishes keep me going back again and again. Most recently I ordered something relatively simple for brunch—wood-fired chicken over a salad of seasonal greens and fruit—and I was wowed at how thoughtful and delicious each component was. If you can ever get a table, it's worth eating here. This is fine dining in Hackettstown. Very pleasantly surprised at how much better the food is now from when it first opened (meh). Everything - duck, hog, lamb, octopus, salads, etc etc etc deliciously made and beautifully presented. I did find some things over salted, but I'm picky that way. So, James on Main gave me a rare experience. I got to have one of the best meals in a long time, paired with a wine I chose (it's BYOB) while being surprised at the final bill for being cheaper than I expected. You really can't go wrong here. It's outstanding quality and sourced ingredients expertly cooked with good service on top of it. I had the hog chop, it was amazing , my fiancé had the burger, it was really tasty. Although the wait was excessive and the dining room was small, the FOOD was superb; comparable to the former Stockton Inn with regards to its farm-to-table freshness. Chef Van Pelt takes his Northern NJ Americana Menu to the next level meticulously combining fresh fruit, root vegetables, glazes and herbs with the intent of stimulating every part of your palate. Every course was exciting, fresh, healthy and visually stimulating. Kevin, the Host / Manager was absolutely charming, personable and beyond hospitable. I highly recommend this jewel "in the cut" in Hackettstown, NJ. I truly hope that the Chef will expand / open another restaurant in Bergen County. More...
