We found this place for dinner while visiting from out of town and boy were we happy and impressed! It's an adorable, "foodie" restaurant with a global menu that includes amazing cuisine from Ethiopia, Guyana and elsewhere, taking the coolest recipes and serving them up with a funky wine and beer list and plenty of great cocktail options. The fruit punch is super refreshing and not too sweet and there's a drink for everyone on the menu.I got the Ethiopian plate with like seven different delicious vegetable dishes on injera, the traditiaonl bread you use to scoop up the other food. You can also order fish or meat with this dish if you like. My husband got this grilled goat dish that he said was amazing. It came with plantains and this awesome black rice that is apparently a typical dish in Guyanese cuisine. We had two attentive, friendly and kind servers who  made it a pleasure to dine in this warmly decorated, comfortable and cozy spot. Next time we're in Albany, we're coming back to try more of their wonderful food! More...

They happily accommodated us team of 12 in 10 minute notice. Brunch menu offered not only variety of, but healthy options. I had Red Curry Fish Taco - aside from one of the two tortillas being burnt/ overly cooked, it was delicious. It comes with a side of sweet yellow plantains which offsets the spiciness from the tacos and creates a culinary harmony and well balanced dish. My friends had Brazilian Breakfast, Challah and Mixed Berry French Toast, Chicken & Red Velvet Waffles, Southern Style Shrimp and Grits, Mealie Corn Bread Benedict, which all looked great and they all seemed to enjoy them! We were lucky to have a great live music when we walked in. It seemed like a family ran restaurant - takes really good, personal care of customers. The owner even came to say thank you before we left. I suggest you stop by when you're visiting Albany! More...

If you haven't been to Umana you need to run, not walk to this restaurant. Every single meal my friends/family and I have ever had has been delicious and clearly cooked with love and thoughtful intention. The staff are friendly and the space itself is always warm and inviting to everyone - it's my favorite restaurant in Albany. I've held group dinners here for work events that were a success, and I recently ordered catering for a party at my house. Everything was impeccable as always, and served with a smile. Thank you Umana for your delicious cuisine and also for being such a welcoming space in the community! More...

This was an amazing brunch... nourishing and impressive. Our group of 12 hungry runners was passing through Albany on our way back to Queens, and stumbled upon this treasure. Everyone in our group found something on the menu for themselves, and all left satisfied. As a Brazilian-American who is gluten free vegetarian, the Brazilian Breakfast was a match made in heaven. Black beans, plantains, crispy tofu, and injeera chips...with a side of guava juice. This dish alone made me want to come back to Albany. Thankfully, they were able to accommodate our group at the last minute without hesitation. We were also really fortunate that a talented 3 piece jazz band was playing on stage during the meal. This place is yummy. I think I've been here 5-6 times over the last several years, and have never had a bad meal. I usually come on Sundays for their brunch, but I have had dinner here before and it was delicious. The eggs Benedict is my favorite brunch item, along with the challah & mixed berry French toast. I plan to come back during the week to try the Ethiopian food, I've heard good things about it. More...

Service - A+Environment - A+Food - A+We took a big group to Umana last night after a hard week with a family funeral. Our server was a friend by the time we left and brought so much joy to a situation that he didn't even know about. Our food was amazing and I can't wait for my next trip back to Albany and Umana. We had 3 with celiac at our table and feel that we were safe. Just as a heads up-- always ask questions as some things clearly marked GF were in a shared fryer. Because the service was great, we figured that out pretty quickly and no one was given food that was unsafe. We were all satisfied and happy. Thank you! More...

The jerk lamb lollipops were succulent and served with a sweet sauce, spicy rice and plantains as decor. The injera was pretty "nech," aka white. It wasn't very authentic. The waiter couldn't even pronounce injera right. The food otherwise was decent but overpriced. But the overall atmosphere and variety of food options are definitely worth visiting. Oh and the bathroom there's mouthwash (and a bunch of other products) very wholistic. *** my boyfriend said the jerk lamb lollipops were the best thing he's ever had. I wish he ate me the way he ate them. More...

If you are adventurous eater looking for a place with a great vibe and excellently prepared food, go to Umana. My husband and I had dinner there on a recent Saturday night. We were greeted enthusiastically by our server, McKensie, who was very knowledgeable about the menu--both wine and food--and gave us terrific recommendations. My hubby had the goat dish that was served with a dark rice with peas and I had the fish tacos..both had plantains(my fave). We had interesting wine (I had an amber wine) and shared a fabulous bread pudding dessert. While we were there we were also served by Noah and Alan, whose knowledge and enthusiasm paralleled McKensies, which, trust me, is hard to top. I enjoyed the place so much that a few days later I had a friend in from out of town and I brought her and another friend to Umana. Another perfect evening. We shared the lamb lollipops as an appetizer and then shared three entrees..shrimp with noodles, spare ribs, and chicken wings that had a wonderful sauce. We had one piece of flourless chocolate cake that should be called fudge cake...yum! More...
