Customer service here is exceptional and the presentation of something as simple as slicing and bagging a loaf of bread goes above and beyond. Not to mention how tasty the bread is! I got the September special which was a load of farm bread--right out of the oven  didn't even make it out of the parking lot before chowing down on some of that yummy bread. I used it to make many things, but my favorite was a grilled cheese sandwich  I will certainly be patronizing the bake house again! More...

I recently got a gift box from my car dealer with 5 of treats from the bakehouse. It contained 3 cookies and two brownies. The magic brownie bites are indeed magically delicious. A wonderful bite of delectable chocolatey goodness. In the bakehouse itself my favorite is the sourdough bread or the wonderful reuben sandwich. Prepare to have restraint here or to gain a few pounds as everything is delicious here also. If you have an event, the catering is amazing with choices from multiple carities of mini puff pastry that are sweet or hearty. More...

I stopped in today to buy a 4 pack of brownies, since I occasionally crave them but usually at 11 pm. I left with the brownies, a paesano roll, and a piece of carrot cake. The staff is always friendly and helpful, and the baked goods are delicious! (Do yourself a favor and walk down to the creamery and have a gelato while you're there. The dark chocolate is sinful.) Zingerman's restaurant and their sandwiches are something of a legend in the Ann Arbor area, and I was recently amazed to discover that you can score some of the bread and baked goods fresh and hot out of the oven. Located near the Ann Arbor airport and Costco, Zingerman's Bakehouse hides nonchalantly in what looks like an industrial park. You will be sure that Siri is steering you wrong as you follow your navigator to the location, but as soon as you reach the last row, you will turn left and see your destination. Step inside and be greeted by the smell of fresh-baking bread and other assorted pastries. On my most recent visit, I couln't resist a coffee cake, and wound up buying a slice to savor. While I waited in the (short) line, I could see workers busily baking in the huge ovens in the back. All that deliciousness, just waiting to be trucked out to the Zingerman's establishments around the city, but I loved knowing that I could get some of my own to enjoy at my leisure. For a delightful surprise that's out of the ordinary, swing on by Zingerman's Bakehouse -- like me, you may just find one of your new favorite spots in town! More...

I stopped by Zingerman's Bakehouse -- this is the first time I've visited what I'm calling the Zingerman Strip. It's an unassuming industrial park-like building area but the an entire section is Z-City! This is dangerous for me because I fill up at Costco and the Z-City empire is chillin' across the way. I'm trying to remember all that I ordered, so here goes! I love that the gal working offered to everything in half for me as I mentioned that I was bringing this in for co-workers. ALL the pastries are DELICIOUS but if you have to prioritize, this is how I would to it: *RED WHITE & BLUE SWEET RÉTES (a Hungarian specialty, you might know it as strudel. We take our own fresh dough and carefully hand stretch it over an 8-foot table until it's thin enough to see through. Then it's folded and layered with melted butter and a sprinkle of cake crumbs, wrapped around fresh tasty fillings, baked until golden brown and dusted with powdered sugar) - this month's was filled with tart cherry, wild blueberry, and sweet cream cheese fillings.YOU HAVE TO GET THIS. I don't usually love strudels of any sort but the texture of these are perfect with the perfect amount of filling. *Juliette's Almond Croissants (filled and coated with with our own almond frangipane, then dusted with powdered sugar.) - Croissant special of the month! I felt like the almond frangipane was enhanced with another fruit element (e.g. pear or something) but 'twas tasty regardless! *LEMON CLOUD (This airy butter pastry is kissed with a touch of our fresh lemon curd to create a danish that will lift you up in to the clouds.) - I thought this morning pastry was really unique. The outside just looks like a hole-less sugar doughnut. The gal working did warn me that when cut in half, it looks "empty" but I thought it was a nice bit of curd --  the lemon wasn't artificial tasting at all or too sweet. *LEMON SCONE (We allow no shortening shortcuts to cut the cost and carve up the flavor. And to kick up the lemon flavor we give them the triple lemon treatment- candied lemon, fresh lemon zest and a touch of real lemon oil.) - I love me some scones & Zingerman's makes a pretty solid one. Now, were's the clotted cream at? *SWEET CREAM BISCUITS (We start by freshly milling organic soft white wheat berries from Ferris Organic Farms in Eaton Rapids, Michigan on our stone mill. Next, we hand-mix these biscuits so they are moist and fluffy, ready to hold a heap of delicious fruits. ) -- SO flaky and beautiful. I ate these on their own but they could definitely hold up some homemade whipped cream and fruit. *BOSTOCK (Our bakers begin with a slice of our independently awesome buttery brioche bread, brush it with orange flavored simple syrup, spread it with almond frangipane, sprinkle it with toasted almonds and bake it.) - The lady working explained this to me as a french toast basically! And it delivered! I really like the texture of this one. HOWEVER, I tend to like more flaky laminated things like croissants and Cheez-Its so I probably wouldn't get this again. I also picked up a baguette - i've never seen a baguette so airy and crumby and beautiful (in the states). More...

Zingerman's Bakehouse anchors a budding array of storefronts here on the south side of A2 that comprise a veritable Zingerman's empire. All these stores appear to share production spaces, and provide the public with a way to get Zingerman's goods on the spot, exactly where they're made, in a car-friendly setting that's near the interstate and doesn't require driving all the way into downtown A2. Your best bet is picking to your heart's content from all the freshly made offerings here, whether the breads, pastries, or other baked items. There are also sandwiches in a refrigerated case as well as packaged items that aren't immediately perishable. Prices on the freshly made goods aren't terribly outrageous, although they do seem a tad spendy on some of the packaged ones ($8.99 for six baked cookies, if I remember correctly). Nevertheless, the fresh items are exactly that - and super delicious.I felt that the service here was slightly less engaging than at the Zingerman's coffee house and especially at the candy manufactory a few doors down, but in true Zingerman's fashion they do offer samples and are patient with explanations of what's on offer. Still, this is worth a visit alongside the Zingerman's creamery, coffee shop, and candy shop at this industrial park. More...

I tried not to like this place as I felt the deli was over hyped. We came to this warehouse like facility following lunch at the deli in search for dessert. We got a bunch of brownies, tried some cake and also got the Saturday Cruellers. The brownies are amazing and actually worth the $4 I was griping about. The hummingbird cake is amazing (we actually ordered two of these for Christmas--they ship). The cruellers are only made on Saturday and are nice and fluffy. Sadly, I would still say Krispy Kreme cruellers are better. Parking:Easy to find and free in the Lot More...

This is in an odd location compared to the other Zingerman's locations I've been to, the Deli and Roadhouse. It looks like it's at a boring warehouse facility. But the inside of it does look like a typical bakery.I'm giving it a high rating because of the variety of baked good options, which I'll need to try all of them. It's not a 5-star rating because of the price, especially paying $6 for a tuna sandwich. It was on pumpernickel bread and it was tasty, though.I'm sure the price is worth it, though, for their more unique food options. Also, I wish there was inside seating in addition to the outdoor seating they already have. Serious wow factor here. The primary source of the internationally renowned Zingerman's bagels and breads, the Bakehouse is one of the intercorrelated stand-alone offspring of the original deli on Detroit Street in Kerrytown. The specialty of this outlet is the bread and related products, including the fabulous chicken salad sandwiches amongst other premade varieties. Most cakes and pastries seem to be created here as well.Located in series with neighboring Zingerman's ventures (reviewed separately) in an established business park off State Street near the Ann Arbor Airport, the Bakeshop is flanked by the Zingerman's Creamery and custom wedding cake shop. Also found there are their candy shop and the coffee roaster. To facilitate maximum customer service, the Zingerman's mail order service is able to draw on all the products found at the deli downtown. Walking in the sights to behold are everywhere except behind you! To the left is a tall wall cooler display chock full of sammies, and other delights created on premises. A little further down are windows to view the 24/7 baking, proofing and related activities. There is a schedule by hour on one wall of which breads are made when, with or without yeast starters. My only disappointment after being away three-years is the demise of the Egg Bagel. Apparently the health department required a separate process from the other classics and that wasn't cost effective. Bummer! Arguably the selection here is the freshest possible and with construction currently (9/16/18) messing up the Kerrytown district, parking is less aggravating. Although pricy, the selection is as good or better. Look out for monthly specials too. More...

If you're looking for the Zingerman's bread experience without the crowds, this is the place for you. I come here every time I'm in Ann Arbor to stock up on bread! You can get all kinds of baked goodies here, including cakes, the magic brownies, pastries (which are stunning), coffee cakes, banana breads, and baking products. They also have a wall with all of their breads, which the employees can slice for you if you want. Everyone is always very nice there, and they deal with crowds (if there are any) efficiently. I find the best time to go is in the morning; you can enjoy a breakfast pastry from the Bakehouse or meander down to the Coffee Co for a cup of coffee! More...

Zingerman's took such amazing care of us for our wedding! Our cake was simply perfect; we requested that it be decorated as closely to the design of our wedding invitations as possible, and the decorators absolutely nailed it, calling to confirm colors and flower styles ahead of time! Afterwards we found a gift from them among our wedding gifts, along with a really sweet card! Thank you so much! Would absolutely recommend More...

I mentioned that I lost my punch card (when my credit cards & ID went missing also) and the woman behind the counter replaced it for me with new punches! I was surprised and grateful for such thoughtful and generous customer service. I bought 3 loaves of bread and a Blueberry buckle. The farmhouse bread is the Sept. bread of the month and on special. I got it Sliced and had a few pieces in the car. Crusty outside, soft inside, and aromatic! Delicious! The other two loaves (an olive bread that was the weekend special and an onion rye) are for my Dad's house so I'll update you in that later. I am from Delaware and a friend brought some Zingermans bakery goods down for me as a gift. It was AMAZING! Seriously, the breads, the cheeses, the dips, the BROWNIES (to die for!). Everything was so "real" and fresh tasting! As in none of that processed junk. Not only was it delicious and the best brownies and cheese I ever had but, each package had its own little cute homemade touch to it. It was great. Went to Zingerman's Bakery today to grab a lunch to go with my grandmother. We were disappointed to see that the tuna sandwich was gone (my grandfathers favorite!). A young lady named Micah asked if we had any questions, we told her our disappointment of the sandwich not being available, she went herself and made us a sandwich fresh! She was so helpful and kind. Recently moved to the area and we were lucky enough to be dropping off our moving truck close to Zingerman's! Our daughter was fast asleep in the car so my husband bought all the goodies. He bought quite the variety including a ricotta doughnut. It was so light and delicious! I can't stop thinking about this doughnut. We also tried the cinnamon roll which my daughter enjoyed. The croissant was buttery and fresh. My husband bought so much we had leftovers for the next morning. So happy and a little bit scared this is a short drive for us from our new place. I highly  recommend. More...

We loved working with the Bakehouse! The cake was delicious, our guests loved it, and it was beautifully decorated. The sugar flowers were unbelievable, and even matched some of the flowers in the wedding. They even made a small gum paste version of our cat, which was awesome :) The cake matched the image we had initially discussed with them during the consultation, and came out even better than we imagined! Living in Rhode Island, I have not visited any Zingerman location, nor had I heard of them, until last week what I received a random package in the mail. Turns out, my neighbor sent a gift to us and it was from this company. Opening the box, I came to a circular wooden box which contained the tasty goodness of their Sourcream Coffeecake. The box had a nice description and storage information in it, which made things easy. The package also had one of their newsletters and some general info about the company. The instructions said it would be fine for up to two weeks on the counter before drying out (there is also a freezing option). Well a week after receiving in, finally cut into it and it was so moist and delicious. It had a sweet note, but not overly sweet. The walnuts added a nice little crunch here and there without losing the soft texture overall. Further support for this place, a friend came over and got super excited when he saw the box labeled Zingerman, so it does have brand recognition. Would definitely order this for someone as a gift, and will most likely peruse their website to see what other goodies we can order. More...

Okay, this place is great. Extremely clean, newly renovated with an awesome view into the bakery. And loads of fresh baked, delicious breads, pastries and edibles. Even to-go salads and beverages! Staff is, as you’d expect from Zingerman’s, top-notch, friendly, helpful and responsive. The best customer service in town. So why give 4 stars you say? Firstly, prices are very high-I understand some of why that is the case, but $6.99 for a small loaf seems to be over the top. Second, I’ve tried several of their brick-like brownies and after reading the package, noticed that there are 500 calories in one brownie! (A donut has around 195, just for reference!). The brownie was okay, but I won’t eat another one unless I’m planning on skipping a meal, now that I know how calorie-rich they are. It’s great food, great location, but expect some sticker shock if you’re new to Zingerman’s! More...

When I told the person who was helping me that it was my first time visiting, their face lit up in delight and they told me about all their favorite baked goods and recommendations. So friendly! I got the magic brownies of various types and a palmier. The palmier was probably I've ever seen and the most delicious. It was so flaky and buttery, I wish I could have one every day!! Don't forget to take a number when you walk in so you can order at the counter. They're pretty quick but it gets incredibly crowded in the small shop. If you're not okay with being in a tight space, you might have to try to go there at non-peak hours because it fills up fast. More...

When I first moved to AA, I tried to resist the allure of Zingermans for so long. Not sure why. At all. Anyway, I've been loving the bagels here for a while (not to mention their amazing veggie cream cheese), and decided to come here for a fresh loaf of bread. I'm trying to get into better breads, and I know I'm getting the highest quality ingredients when I go to Zingerman's. The bakery is currently in a temporary location because they're remodeling, so it was a little crowded on a Saturday morning. The staff was super attentive, making sure everyone got served in the correct order/time. No one was waiting too long to ask a question or order some baked goods. Great customer service, too! I wasn't sure what to get, so they let me try a couple loaves -- you can try ANYTHING at Zingerman's before you buy! I ended up getting the most delicious pumpernickel bread EVER and I'm so glad I did! It's good quality and super fresh, hoping it lasts a couple days so I can make sandwiches out of it :)Overall, this place is super fun with lots of goodies to sample. It's a very friendly place; the staff is not intimidating at all and they genuinely want you to love their breads/pastries. I've been to some bakeries where the staff is kind of rude because they prefer baking to actually selling the product. This is not the case here! They really make shopping here a fun & enjoyable experience. I know it can get a little pricey at Zingerman's but I feel like it's always worth it. They really care about the products they make, putting in a lot of effort, love, and high quality ingredients.P.S. They offer a punch card for regular bread buyers -- buy 10 get one free! More...

Again, even thought the bar is set WAY HIGH for anything with the Zingerman's name on it, the Bakehouse surpasses expectations. We were there on a sunday, (and I highly suggest you come on a Saturday or sunday when the special bakes are available), and bought an Obama roll, (pecans sticky bun),  a cream stuffed donut, a potato and bacon stuffed pastry, an olive peasant loaf AND a cheddar pepper loaf.  (because 2 people need all that)I didn't want to bug the staff to split the loaves for us, (but my mom did), especially after she spent so much time slicing and helping and waiting for us to decide.. AND answering questions and offering answers before I even knew I had them.. (truly, she was amazingly intuitive!).. they are just really very nice here and very very knowledgeable of their product.  Evrything's good here so there's no advice to give... not one thing was average. Absolutely TOP notch quality.  Absolutely fantastic recipes.  Absolutely the best service imaginable!!  Day 1:  Unknowingly, I opened a 3 day old loaf of Detroit St. Sourdough at my brother's house, sliced & toasted it up for a family breakfast.  WOW no one knew until my bro fessed up.Day 2:  My wife, daughter and I happened upon the deli in Kerrytown.  Bought a loaf of The Roadhouse.  It was perfect toasted, buttered, seasoned and topped with "sous vide poached" eggs.Day 3:  My bro asked me to stop by his neighborhood Zingerman's (The Bakehouse).  This location is in an office park.  And remarkably surrounded by Zing & Zingerman this, that & others.  They're building a small empire!  Had to ask for another Detroit St. Sourdough.  The salesperson was surely enthusiastic about my choice but a bit skeptical a loaf could be had.  Well nothing on the shelves.  After disappearing into the actual bakery for more than a bit, she reappeared with a loaf (fresh and too hot to handle) wrapped in her apron letting me know It was "just born."  And me?  A newborn believer!! We used them for the grooms cake, the wedding cake, and the favors and before I get into the design, I just want to say that to cake was delicious and the people we worked with were incredible. All of our guests complemented us on the cake because a lot of the time wedding cakes can be pretty disappointing. To be honest, our wedding cake didnt end up looking as good as I would have hoped, I knew going into it my design idea was a bit out of the box, but I wish they would have just told me that it was unrealistic. The grooms cake was perfect and so were the cookie favors! Really cute. At the end of the day, I was pretty happy with how everything went because in my opinion, the taste is what is important. Just next to Zingerman's Creamery (aka cheese nirvana), is Zingerman's Bakehouse. This is the best smelling bakery I've ever had the pleasure of being inside of! I kinda wish they made candles too haha! I'm not a huge fan of sweets but I would buy everything in here just so my house could smell as sweet as this bakery, all the time. I arrived a bit later in the day so a lot of items on the shelves were already gone, but I was able to see what used to be there from the remaining items like different flavor rugelach, banana bread, brownies and different types of mini bundt cakes such as sour cream and coffee and hot cocoa. Another shelf was filled with marshmallows, graham crackers and brittle, all made in house too! They still had a lot of loaves left but some spots were empty or very close to being empty. There's a chalkboard on top of all the breads they have, with a baking schedule of all their breads that's super convenient, if you want a specific kind. They also have a refrigerated sections with yummy looking cakes and pre made sandwiches for a quick bite to eat. More...

I tried a sample of coffee at a presentation in Detroit so when I was visiting Ann Arbor, stopping to their warehouse row of store fronts was on my 'to-do' list. The bakery was impressive and in spite of the fact that I was there at the noon hour, the clerk educated me on several great breads and desserts to help me pick a wonderful assortment to take home. She also provided me with a few samples to try at home. We loved them all, including the samples of the chocolate sourdough. I'll certainly be back for a full loaf of that bread. The seasonal breads and desserts that were listed in their flyer look fabulous. I think I may need to head back soon before September is over to get the chocolate Babka. The baking classes were in the back and according to some of the yelp reviews, they appear to be fabulous classes to attend. So glad I stopped in here because I will definitely sign up for one of them.If you happen to be near the area I suggest stopping in. It's easy to walk to all of their store fronts in a row, including the candy, cheese/gelato, and the coffee shop. More...

My husband and I are frequent Zingerman's customers- both at the deli and bakehouse. We love that they are a local business, excel in customer service, and use the highest quality ingredients. We did some other cake tastings in the Ann Arbor area, thinking that a Zingerman's wedding cake would not fit in our budget. Needless to say after cake tasting at other bakeries, we couldn't find the right fit for us and ended up at Zingerman's Bakehouse. We never looked back! Their cakes are seriously THE BEST, and we were amazed by the value. Their pricing is very competitive, and we felt the design, quality, and taste of their wedding cakes far exceeded any of the other places we tried. We felt at ease throughout the process, and they make multiple last minute adjustments for us. We received so many compliments from our guests saying it was the best wedding cake they had ever had! We also added a small gluten free cake at the last minute for some of our guests and appreciated the flexibility of Zingerman's Bakehouse to make that happen. We can't say enough good things about our experience with the Bakehouse and would highly recommend them! We are looking forward to our one year anniversary because we saved the top tier of our wedding cake and can't wait to enjoy it! More...

I would highly recommend Zingerman's baking classes. While they may seem a little bit pricey, you need to consider the great goods you take home with you. I took a four hour Hungarian baking class and went home with a double sheet of one of their famous cakes, a baked loaf of bread and dough to bake still another loaf at home. I learned a great deal and it helped my confidence in making my own bread at home and cake at home. You also get a free drink and pastry next door at the shop while on your class break. So worth it! Yes Zingerman's is overrated and expensive, but a lot of their food is really good. I've tried a good number of their baked goods, most of which have been delicious; a lot of other shops in Ann Arbor carry them (often at lower prices). They also offer baking classes, and they list the nutrition facts and ingredients online, which I really appreciate! Many of their baked goods contain nuts, if allergies are a concern. What I've loved:- Bostock - it's like a superior French toast; brioche topped with frangipane, orange-y and almond-y deliciousness. The brioche is fluffy and soft, and together it's not excessively sweet- Ginger scone - texture is tender and great but the crystallized ginger inside is really delicious!- Pecan blondie - taste and texture are just amazing; I like this more than any of their brownies- 8-grain 3-seed bread - really hearty, dense, seedy bread. Just a hint of sweetness and slightly nutty from the sunflower seeds on the crust - so so good, I keep accidentally eating slices of this plain- Funky chunky chocolate cookies - delicious chocolate chunks and walnuts; it feels like the dough is just there to hold the chocolate and nuts together. Super addictingPretty good:- Dinkelbrot (spelt loaf) - moist and pretty dense (feels just slightly spongey) but super flavorful, just slightly sweet and very rich and hearty. The sunflower seeds throughout and on the crust are amazing- Triple trouble chocolate cookie - really chocolatey and rich :)- Black magic brownie - super decadent and fudgy- Lemon scones - really nice lemon flavor but not overpowering, texture is buttery and light- Cranberry orange muffin - the pockets of cranberry are delicious, and I really like the cinnamon sugary top- Sourcream coffee cake - rich and moist with a delicious cinnamon walnut swirl- Hot cocoa coffee cake - really tastes like hot cocoa, lots of chocolate chunks near the top- Cheddar herb scones - cheesey and buttery, great texture like all their scones- Jumbleberry pie - really great flaky buttery crust! Well-balanced mix of berries in the filling- Butter croissant - probably the second best in Ann Arbor in my opinion (after White Lotus Farms)Just ok/standard:- Currant scone - good scone texture but not very interesting- Cinnamon rolls - standard- Blueberry muffin - standard- Maple bran muffin - standard bran muffin, didn't seem very sweet or maple-y- Lemon cloud - it's really airy and kind of a mix between a danish and a donut, made with danish-like dough and just a smidge of lemon curd in the middle, and then rolled in sugar. The one I tried wasn't as soft as I expected; I prefer the pillow puffs at Pastry Peddler, which are the same conceptNot good:- Ginger jump-up cookie - it's not very spicy or sweet, just kind of boring- Townie brownie (wheat free) - texture is weird - it's really fluffy and cakey, not like a brownie at all, and not very chocolatey either More...

One of two of my preferred Zingerman destinations, the other being a few yards away at the (Coffee) Roastery & Cafe.  The Bakehouse can be claustrophobic, particularly before holidays, like yesterday morning, when the Bakehouse was putting out Hot Cross Buns and clearly I was not the only one planning to buy some for Easter.  A friend in my company, evidently deciding to forgo paying her rent next month, bought an entire Hummingbird Cake.  Serving it for dessert that evening, she said she was reminded of the quote, "(Now that) is most beautiful piece of chocolate cake that you've ever seen, right?"  (Hummingbird Cake has lots of ingredients but chocolate is not one of them.  Now I feel bad I had to explain her joke.)   Fortunately, Zingerman's exports their baked goods (mostly breads) to a few spots in Kalamazoo like Sawall's, so I don't have to drive to Ann Arbor to sate my hunger for them every time.  The Bakehouse is situated in what looks to be an industrial park.  The prices are, like everything that has Zingerman's label, crazily exorbitant.  Or maybe blindingly obscenely expensive is the better phrase.  The pre-made sandwiches on the shelves in the cooler just inside the door are a bargain, and are popular with the lunch crowd.I have often thought that it's too bad eating outside the Bakehouse is so unpleasant, because it is an industrial park after all, and absolutely no attention has been paid by Zingerman to make the area attractive.  So don't go thinking the Bakehouse is a restaurant or a cafe. I love this place and it is right down the street from my house.  Turns out this is a dangerous combination for my wallet.  They are expensive but they do turn out quality products that are consistently delicious.  I have only had one bad experience here and that is when I ordered their cheese/potato pasties to go and they didn't have any cheese. :(  They really didn't taste like much without the cheese.  I actually haven't been back since...but that has more to do with the pricey-ness of the place than with the error. They are small but serve a wide variety of baked goods.  They have cupcakes, cake slices, whole cakes, breads, and a large selection of pastries.  I like their coffee cake.  I also really enjoy that they offer unique items for each day of the week.  On Sunday they have chocolate covered doughnuts!!!  They are so delicious.  I have ordered their soups quite a few times and have never been disappointed.  I'm sure they make it from scratch and the flavors are out of this world.  They offer a variety of yogurt parfaits, sandwiches, soups, and salads to-go.  Making it a convenient quick-stop-spot for the working crowd. They have a coffee bar almost adjacent to the bake house.  So one can pick up a slice of cake or scone and meander down to the coffeehouse for a cup of espresso.  Then you can enjoy both on one of their outdoor benches.I enjoy that each month they have one style of cake on sale (both the whole cake and the slices); this encourages me to try a new style.I wish they had some type of rewards program or loyalty card......Zingerman's are you reading this More...

We've traveled quite a bit in the past few years, and I need to update my Z's Bakehouse review. Sacher tortes in Vienna, bread in Marin County California, Estonia, Russia, Ireland, France, and Italy, cupcakes in other shops including A2 and FL, and still Zingerman's has the BEST anywhere. Cakes, tortes, and cupcakes from other places are decorated up the kazoo and very pretty, but Zingerman's are gorgeous AND they taste amazing! Fresh, just moist enough, and so tasty.  At other places the flavor and freshness often take second or third place to the decorating. I'm not even bothering to buy them elsewhere anymore because it's always such a disappointment. Their bread too is the best anywhere, except for my gramma's homemade. And Grammy, who was born in 1871 in a gold mining village in Canada and died in 1971, has not made bread for me for a long time, so Zingerman's it is! Oh, their rye breads, all varieties. Their pumpernickle! But perhaps most of all, the pies. The crust, light, flaky, and delicate but oh so rich in flavor. What's in that crust? Don't bother to go there. Yes, yes, it's expensive but spare me the complaining. It's worth the splurge. Skip a couple of cups of coffee at Starbucks and have a slice of their pie or cake (sold at Next Door at the Deli in addition to the Bakehouse.)  The best quality, freshest ingredients in the best recipes make all the difference.Your culinary life will be forever changed. I had a house in Ann Arbor, down the street from this Zingerman's Bakery.  There's a particular happiness biting into fresh warm baked bread on Saturday AMs with my French roast coffee and WSJ.  This was my ritual every weekend.  I'd buy 2 loaves.  One to eat on my way home and one to have for the next couple of days.  I'm not a bread lover in fact opposite so when I eat bread it's definitely worth it.  Now they serve pastries and some of the fanciest cakes in the Metro.  I stop by both Kerrytown and this bakery whenever I'm in Detroit Metro.  It'll be worth your while. Good selection of baked goods. We got a pumpkin cheesecake slice, a cheese Danish, and a cinnamon roll. Everything has been delicious and has been contributing to my weight gain here in AA. Have to dock a star because the cashier got an attitude with me when I asked for a fork with my cheesecake. I'm visiting from another part of the country, how was I supposed to know the napkins and eating utensils were behind me? Otherwise a nice place and I'd like to come back if I'm ever in AA. More...

I ordered my wedding cake from the Bakehouse and it was absolutely delicious. They are so organized and make the process really easy for you. You can come in with a design, or like me, just tell them things you like and they'll help design something unique. They also have cakes on display. At first, we came up with a succulent-themed design, but then I changed my mind and went with a hydrangea one on display that looked Amazing. As far as the flavors go, I wanted my cakes to have Lots of flavor and not be bland, so I went with two layers of lemon curd on one, and a chocolate ganache with espresso buttercream on the other. There were three tiers to my small cake, and the great thing is you can also order some sheet cake to have enough servings but in a cost-effective way. They were so patient in working with me to figure out what's within my budget too! I really appreciate that. Thank you guys so much for creating such a wonderful experience for our wedding! More...

Over the decades, Zingerman's has grown to expand production at a commercial site to accommodate their customers' needs. They then realized that the customer base cannot always get to their historic deli and coffee shop location so they now serve at their industrial location too. This bakehouse location makes it easy for suburban Ann Arbor to pick up the tasty goods. The breads and pastries were fresh and tasty. Car parking is right outside. This strip also includes a coffee shop and creamery/ cheese shop so you can pick up whatever incidentals you need. You can also take your pastry right next door to eat at the coffee shop.  If I lived in Ann Arbor, I would be a regular here in addition to their full service Kerrytown location. But these three shops are very basic in decor. More...

I need good sourdough slices to make morning toast with Kerrygold butter. Toast is what makes my day startable. There was this great bakery where I used to live and they had very good sourdough--good stretch, good tang, good blisters, good moisture content. But then we moved and I was worried that I'd be stuck with sub-par toast.  Not so. I realize that everyone in Michigan already knows how awesome this bakery is and I'm late to the five-star party, but I just had to throw my love on the pile. The industrial complex where the Bakehouse is located is a little confusing. I thought Siri had messed up the directions and sent us to a metal fittings factory or something. But no, it was like a lovely food lover's lovely wonderland. The retail space was warm on a chilly Saturday afternoon and smelled like heaven. The woman behind the counter explained the Zingerman's history and myriad locations to us while we watched through the big window as hip looking people slapped and rolled dough in the production part of the bakery. She explained that other buildings in the complex were home to a Zingerman's coffee shop, cooking classes, creamery, and where they roast coffee beans. Plus there's the famous Deli across town, so on, etc. Anyhooo. That was lovely and promising and all, so I bought some sourdough with a hopeful heart. Took it home. Made my toast. Put on the butter. Ate it. Oh. My. Lordy. I'll say it now and clearly: This is the best sourdough bread I've ever had. For. Real. More...

We love Zingerman's!! When we first sat down with Erin, my husband I really wanted cupcakes for our wedding because my husband is not a fan of cake. In fact, he would rather eat any other dessert besides cake. So, we talked to Erin about the different cupcake options, pricing and went on our merry way with our sample box of cakes. When we sat down and compared vendors, we decided to go with Zingerman's based on reputation, quality of baked goods and reliability. Plus, they are located literally down the road off of I-94, near our wedding venue, which was the Marriott in Ypsilanti and we knew they could get there, even in a snow storm (if that ended up happening on our wedding day).

Well, something amazing when we took the cake home. My husband and I loved every sample! Yes, my husband LOVED the cake! He loved the samples so much that he said that we needed to have an actual cake, instead of cupcakes, so that everyone could enjoy the wonderful flavors!

We worked with Emily on our New Year's Eve wedding cake. She designed a beautiful, classy and blinged out cake! We chose three different flavors for each tier of the cake. We went with the chocolate, the humingbird and the vanilla chiffon. Elise made our cake, as Erin was on maternity leave, and it turned out amazing! We had a lot of complements on how the cake looked and guests raved about how amazing the cake tasted! We highly recommend Zingerman's for your wedding cake. Erin and Elise were fantastic to work with and they walked us through the entire design process and they made things so easy for us. Our wedding cake was one of the few things I didn't have to worry about on our wedding day.

We took home the top tier of our cake and I called Zingerman's after our wedding and they told me how to wrap the cake and store it in the freezer. We are happily still enjoying our cake and it's still moist! I promise you won't be sorry if you choose them as your cake vendor!

Working with them has been great! My fiance and I want a totally unique wedding cake but wasn't quite sure how we wanted the final design. Their designer sat with us and sketched up an awesome proposal while we were there. They also gave us a box of cake samples. I wasn't sold on the chocolate sample they gave us (there was only 1 in the sampling) and wanted to try others from their list - I called and let them know and they gave me a few other chocolate types to try for free. So far everything has gone smoothly. Their price was a little higher than others, but we knew that going in with a unique design it would be more expensive, and we budgeted accordingly. We actually came in under budget by doing their suggestion of a smaller cake plus extra sheet cakes. I am glad they offered that idea in order to help keep us in our budget and keep our business! I went here on a lazy Sunday at about 11AM. It was a delightful experience. I ended up getting the potato and bacon Hungarian strudel. It was everything. EVERYTHING. Flaky, greasy, potato-y: so yum. I'm afraid I'm going to crave it. Bae got a bagel with cream cheese. His was good, but was kind of a measly shmear.Cathy was working, and in typical Zing fashion, had terrific customer service. I even lamented that the brownies that were being samples were nutty, so she kindly cut up an apple bacon donut for me. It was a really sweet gesture. :)I don't necessarily have any qualms with the prices like many reviewers have mentioned; you get what you pay for - a lotta delish with a little bit of hype mixed in. My one grievance is the Zing nonchalance to nuts. There's a ton of nutty stuff. I would appreciate a statement reflecting Zing's commitment to serving folks with nut allergies (comments on avoidance of cross-contamination in production, offer to slice bread on a separate cutting board, etc.).I'm also a kool-aid drinker of the Zing philosophy, so I can't say that doesn't influence my review. Zingerman's is all about a positive culture, transparent business practices, fair pay to their employees, and support of their community. Heck yes! More...

By now we all know Zingerman's isn't cheap, so commenting on prices is a waste. I do not find the Bakehouse to be incredibly expensive, anyway. The caraway rye bread is the only loaf like it I can find in Arbor Arbor -dark with real rye flour and flecked with a generous amount of caraway seeds - and as far as special bakes go, cranberry pecan is amazing toasted and served with a scoop of chicken salad. I'm new in town and an avid donut fan. I decided to check out Zingerman's Bakehouse this past Sunday since that is the only day they sell donuts. The Bakehouse is tucked away from other businesses, so it was a quiet, uncrowded location with a nice little seating area outside for when the weather is nice. The woman who helped me was very friendly and provided me with a lot of recommendations when I asked. Despite their large selection of baked goods, they only have two donut flavors. I opted for their ricotta filled donut. The donut was amazing, but the price was pretty steep costing me more than two dollars for one donut.I plan on going back to explore their selection more, but if everything is as costly as the donut, it might be best to go only occasionally for a treat. First time visiting Ann Arbor and of course had to check out Zingermans (both the bakehouse and delicatessen). Solid 4 stars. I bought a pack of their vanilla marshmallows and a loaf of their loomis bread (I couldn't resist after getting a free sample!). Both items did not disappoint. Marshmallows: large white soft and fluffy squares that taste like actual vanilla. Makes sense since they use vanilla bean paste and vanilla seeds along with vanilla extract. Loomis bread: I am a sucker for cheese breads. This was delicious and great that their roasted peppers are sourced locally and they use their own made cheese too! Ingredients were simple and I could just keep eating slices as is, no need for anything else but a good round in the toaster oven if you wanted. The staff were all very friendly and had smiles on their faces while serving customers. I would give 5 stars but the prices are a little on the high side. I understand that it's more expensive to use better ingredients but to some visitors a tiny cupcake for 3 bucks and 1.50 for 1 bagel would be a turn off.  Also, their numbers system isn't the most efficient because i noticed many ppl take numbers but don't answer when their called and then you have a number 2 away and aren't sure if you should just jump up and say I'm ready.Overall, I would recommend checking them out if you're here to visit! As an Ann Arbor native, Zingerman’s is both one my standards for food excellence and one of my favorite places to eat.
I’d had Bakehouse treats many times before, but never tried their wedding cake, so I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect when I went in for our consultation. That said, the entire staff went above and beyond my expectations in every way, from our first consultation to designing our cake to the product they delivered to our wedding.
My now-husband and I went in for our first consultation with a couple of ideas of what we wanted on our cake, including what we thought was a somewhat complicated symbol for the middle tier. They immediately took our ideas and drafted a perfect design on the first try, complete with a perfect rendering (and eventual execution) of the symbol. In addition to the design being perfect, the taste of all the samples, and our cake on the day itself, was absolutely delicious. I can’t say enough good things about the Zingerman’s Bakehouse wedding cake team and their confections.

The consultant at Zingerman's was very professional and friendly, and came up with a simply lovely design from the very mixed and disjointed things that interested my husband and me. When we saw the cake created from the consultant's design, I wished I didn't have to cut it because it was so beautiful, even better than I'd imagined. The layers of cake itself were moist with incredible flavor. Zingerman's Bakehouse is the perfect place to have a cake made. Any future event where I need a cake, I'm heading straight to them. Zingerman's captured my picture/vision to a T and the cake was unbelievable although I didn't have any that night I can't wait to have our topper in one year :-)

I know our guests loved all the different flavors we chose and the pictures of the cake are to die for.

The staff was very friendly, and the bread was good.  It is nice that you can sample everything.  It is definitely overpriced, but I'm not from Michigan so it might not be a fair comparison.  Maybe this is the only high-caliber bakery in the area?  Either way, they have good products. More...

Another beautiful part of the Zingerman's empire. Their breads are showstopping. Their sweets delectable. If you love joy and carbohydrates, you will enjoy the Bakehouse. Now, as with all Zingerman's shops, you can sample anything you like. This is how we got ourselves a loaf of onion rye bread and likely the caraway rye next time. But I need to tell you about something special we sampled. You can see a picture of it attached. It is called a langos.Langos (pronounced long-gohsh, the term for one singular or multiples) is a Hungarian street food Zingerman's only makes it on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Now, you may ask yourself, "Why Hungarian street food in a bake shop? That seems random."IT'S BECAUSE IT'S DELICIOUS. Seriously in my top ten food experiences in my life. MY LIFE. YES.Take a disc of fried dough, smear it with sour cream, top with ham, fresh dill, and grated gouda. Sprinkle liberally with paprika. Then put it in your face. I would have never known to expect such a wonderful taste from the combination of those ingredients if Zingerman's had not offered me a sample to try. I am now a believer. My understanding is that the ingredients can vary, much like pizza, but this is definitely a winning combo. To recap: Everything here is wonderful, the staff are always friendly, try a new food! Zingerman's is a staple throughout Michigan and even the U.S. So it would be fitting to check out the actual bakehouse, creamery and coffee house where everything is made.  After driving around in circles, I finally found where exactly this Plaza Drive is, and made my way from store to store.  Did I buy all of what I ate below? Goodness no.  Let's remember that Zingerman's isn't skimpy with their prices, but they also aren't skimpy with their customer service and FREE samples.  Wanna try something?  No problemo.  The friendly staff will cut off a sizeable bite for you.  Of course free samples means free guilt into making a purchase.  My only gripe about this bakery is that they use corn syrup in their products.  Yeah, not a fan.  How do I know this?  Because of the great nutritional information they provide on their website.  Breads-Dinkelbrot (spelt flower, potato, Michigan honey, spice, sunflower seeds): it's full of grains and seedy flavor--very filling and hearty. Sweets-Bostock (buttery brioche, orange simple syrup & toasted almond frangipani): it's very light with a slight hint of orange.  I found it to be very dry and not a fan of citrusy desserts, this was not my go-to.  -Flodni (honey poppy seed, raisin walnut and cinnamon apple): Like a fig pastry with a wonderful poppy seed layer. It's flaky, yet moist and refreshing.  Apple-taste?  Hmmm, not so much.  -Ester hazy Torta (layers of toasted walnut cake, walnut vanilla butter cream & fondant): ok woah. It's more like bread--a nut bread with bits of seeds and grains throughout and sweet frosting layered in between. In fact it's not very sweet except for the frosting and wonderful fondant. Great for those who enjoy a lighter and earthier dessert.FINAL VERDICT: The bakehouse has a great assortment of breads, pastries, cakes, torts, coffee cakes, Hungarian and Jewish delicacies and smiles to go around. If you live in Ann Arbor, you should go here a few times. You will not like ALL their bread.  They sell a few kinds I really don't like.  But if you try a few different kinds, you will find a type of bread or pastry they sell that you LOVE.  For each person, that type of bread/pastry will be different.  Enjoy the experimenting! I feel like a fat kid (that is totally secure with his life choices) in a candy store every time we go here. EVERYTHING here is wonderful. These guys really know what they are doing. Zingerman's Bakehouse has become my default bakery for everyday and special occasion needs. Located in an unassuming industrial park, the bakery along with several other Zingerman's businesses (Creamery and Coffee Company) is housed under a bright orange roof, an identifier for locating the business behind other buildings.Today, the bakery was bustling with customers choosing the perfect soup and sandwich for lunch from the refrigerated case, browsing the table stacked with baked goods, or standing in line looking to purchase pastries or fresh loaves of bread. I was on a mission, however. This week-end, Zingerman's had posted on Facebook that it was offering Bacon Apple Doughnuts with Maple Glaze. These fresh, yeast doughnuts were large and fluffy with just the perfect level of bacon flavor. I loved the crunch of the doughnut, the crispiness of the bacon, and the sweet maple glaze. I could not discern the apple flavor though. I confess that I took my first bite in the car, rather than waiting to get home. I also sampled the cruller, an egg-based doughnut with a sweet glaze. Both were so so so much better than anything found in a typical doughnut shop. The carb fest continued into the evening with slices of Chocolate Cherry Bread slathered with fresh butter. Yes, just decadent bread for dinner. The dense bread was studded with large chunks of dark chocolate. The cherries were sour and a good complement to the sweetness of the chocolate, although it should be noted that there seemed to be only a few cherries in the two slices that I had. There are other featured items this month, including the Roses Cake, a dense buttermilk chocolate cake (similar in taste to the Hunka Burning Love Chocolate Cake) with an amazing PINK buttercream frosting that sparkles. The name of the cake comes from the numerous roses piped onto the cake. Personally, the pink frosting makes the cake taste better. Seriously.Later on this month, the King Cake will be offered, just in time for Mardi Gras. I'm looking forward to trying this compared to the some of the gaudier ones that I've had (including one shipped from New Orleans). As always, service was outstanding, despite the sheer number of customers in line today. I hope each of them had the Bacon Apple Doughnuts also. What a treat! More...

COME ON! This is a carb-lovers paradise!!  From bread, to cake, strudel, world famous coffeecake, brownies and much more, it doesn't get any better than the Bakehouse within the Zingerman's Community of Businesses. Well, maybe the Zingerman's Coffee Company a few doors down, but that's only because I'm a coffee nerd and they roast extraordinary java. The bakery is laid-back, friendly and for the most part ALWAYS busy. Recently I ordered a custom birthday cake for my best friends 40th birthday bash designed like a Victoria's Secret bag. All I can tell you is that is was outstandingly gorgeous and incredibly delicious. At $200, it wasn't cheap but worth every dollar when illuminated with candles! What a showstopper.  If you've never tried the Chile Cheddar bread, do it, TODAY. Have them slice it, hurry home and make a grilled cheese with it. OHMYGOD! Secretively hoard the rest for yourself. It's that good. More...

Ordinarily, I'd not give any Zingerman's production very many stars just on the fact that they are way over priced. In the case of the Bakehouse, that is pretty much true as well. I was a bread baker back in the day and I don't think there are many places in the area that make bread this good. I'm very impressed with the quality of the breads that they make here. I make an exception probably two time a year and buy a loaf of bread at Z. B. It's still too pricey in my book (I know how much it costs to make a loaf of good bread) but I have to give them their due, it's quite tasty. More...

There are so many reviews for the Deli and Roadhouse but to me this is the best Zingerman's establishment.  I gave a 3 star review of the Deli.  In comparison, everything that I noted was lacking in the Deli is taken care of in the Bakehouse. The Bakehouse has a completely different vibe to it (for me) than the Deli.  It's easy to navigate, very comfortable to walk around in and check out different areas, it is spacious to sit and grab a cup of coffee or gather a larger group for dessert.  While the crowd at the deli seems to have a snobbish feel to it at times, the crowd at the bakehouse is much more laid back.  People are doing work, chatting with friends, and loved ones and no one is pushy.  In fact it's quite the opposite.  We've had many nice conversations with other customers and even have formed a few new friendships here.  They have really nice cakes and cookies and drinks too.  It's pricey but it seems much more of a value than the deli.  When it's busy it's still a bit crowded but one a quieter afternoon it's a fun place to sit and bring a date or just to have a few moments to yourself.  The staff here has mostly been friendly too and on multiple occasions has been exceptional in helping me choose what to get. There are a lot of nice places for dessert in Ann Arbor.  I like everything about this one.  I'll go back to check out some of the others and will update my post if needed. I can't write the most specific review right now, because the last time and only time I went was in November, so my memory is a bit vague.I got 2 cosmic cakes I believe, but what I remember most was the lady behind the counter. Just like everything else Zingerman's related, the Bakehouse is pure deliciousness.  The Bakehouse itself has a wide selection of breads, treats, and kitchen gadgets, and I pretty much wanted to buy them all.  They are also super-generous with samples--I was offered an entire slice of chocolate challah...yum!Next door to the Bakehouse, they offer baking (and some cooking) classes at their commercial baking facility.  Classes are limited to 12 people, and you're seated around a large butcher block table with the instructor at the front of the room.  My mom and I took the "Bakin' with Bacon" class and were very impressed (but not surprised) by the high level of service. You get a folder full of class materials (including all the recipes for everything you make in class) and all the mise en place has been done before you arrive (oh, if only this could be how baking and cooking were done at home!).  Alejandro, our instructor, was patient, engaging, and informative.  He went step-by-step through how to make each item and then he (and a few helpers) walked around to supervise while we tried it ourselves.  Everything was timed perfectly, including starting bread that needed to rise first, then working on other items while the bread was rising, etc.  The best part is that at the end of the night, you get to sample all of what Alejandro made, so you can take home all of your items (boxed neatly by the staff members) still intact.  I brought home 2 loaves of bread, several dozen cookies, and a dozen savory scones.  My friends and co-workers were quite pleased with this development :-).  While we didn't make them ourselves, Alejandro also showed us how to make maple-glazed apple & bacon donuts, which might be one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted.  A four-hour class is around $100, which might seem a little pricey, until you consider the quality of the instruction and the amount of food you get to take home with you at the end of the class (and they'll even tell you how to refrigerate/freeze items since you'll probably have so much you won't be able to eat it all at once!). This is where Zingermann's really shines. All of the desserts I've had from here are incredible and so are their coffees, teas, mochas, sodas, and lemonade. I don't think there was a single thing I've had here that I was disappointed with. The gelato and chocolates are also incredible. My favorite was the ginger gelato because it had some kick but was creamy and flavorful and made you want to go back for more. It satisfied my sweet tooth without giving me a toothache from the sweetness. This can also get pretty hectic as it is where all the seating from the delicatessen goes as well. Get there at odd hours and prep for a line. A little expensive, but totally worth it. More...
