09/15/2019We visited to see the wonderful exhibit for The Crown series and also walked the peaceful grounds and enjoyed an excellent, informative, and interesting house tour. The DuPont family had superb taste and sense enough to preserve history, and so much of it is on display here. It's very beautiful and ornate here, much like a smaller scale version of something like the Biltmore estate in Asheville North Carolina. More...

One of the most amazing places to visit in Delaware. I usually go here at least once or twice a year and it's just relaxing to walk through to see the gardens and water pools that are hidden through out the grounds. Above all, I appreciate the acres of mature specimen trees that people with money and sense decided to plant and preserve so that we have nice things now. Also, the mowing and maintenance that allows us to stroll around the grounds from one Abies to another. I feel like I missed out on azalea season and wish I could drop by during the spring. Service is a bit dotty and spotty but they seem to be doing their best. More...

When I first went there, I thought it was just an over the top example of ostentatious wealth. After I learned more, I appreciated it more. After Mr. DuPont saw some other museums of Americana he wanted to turn his house into a museum that gave examples of the best of American art and architecture from different periods. He greatly expanded the house, not so much to live in but to house the collection. He not only collected paintings and furniture and other decorative arts, he also brought in rooms of historic homes that were being demolished and recreated them in Winterthur. It is really quite impressive and a bit intimidating because of its size. You could spend a couple of days there and not see everything. The grounds are also worth exploring. More...
