It seems like only yesterday that I was contemplating and procrastinating on applying for the Master of Social Work Program. To be frank, my back was up against the wall as I was struggling with personal dilemmas, self-doubt, fears of failure and rejection. This is when I reached out to Linda Williams for support. Linda encouraged me to look past my "what if's” and we began to move toward "what is."Linda was very patient as she walked alongside the admission process into Grad school. She was instrumental in teaching me how to look beyond historical challenges. At that time, I was totally oblivious to the fact that she was teaching me how to flyLinda never gave up on me regardless of my ambivalence to change. She encouraged me and challenged me on every level. At times, I wanted to give up but Linda would not allow me to do so.I was accepted into the Masters of Social Work Program at Western Michigan University in 2013. This would not have been possible had it not been for stellar coaching/mentoring services from Linda. She taught me how to overcome perceived barriers as they were simply distractions. She taught me how to fight for the life I desired. In June 2016, I graduated from WMU with a Masters of Social Work Degree.This relationship with Linda has enriched my life, strengthened my character, and provided me hope and a future. I met Dr. Williams through the Network for Social Work Management’s International Mentorship Program and we got along like gasoline and a match from the first conversation. She was unapologetically herself while meeting me where I was in life. Authenticity, especially the bravery that comes from being your authentic self, is very important to me, and the person that matched me with Dr. Williams knew that. I have difficulty with people that get caught up in ego and constantly need sunshine blown up their rear ends.Conversations between Dr. Williams and I were always productive. She not only aided in my professional development through branding discussions and figuring out what I wanted to professionally achieve, but also helped me personally by recognizing any barriers and guiding me through problem-solving if I hit another roadblock in this process. She helped me really focus on celebrating achievements (regardless of the size) that positively enhanced my bigger picture. She also knew the times when I may have needed a small nudge, as well as the times I needed a Shaq-sized boot to my glutes to get things done.The biggest takeaway from our mentor/mentee relationship is that she took one of my strengths (love of learning and knowledge) and used it to help me realize that I do have a great skill set that appears random to me, but only because it is constantly evolving.
