Holy cow! This guy is off the chart. Hired him at the last minute for my 17 year old daughter's birthday party. He was UNBELIEVABLY flexible on getting the time of the performance set, showed up on time, and then UNBELIEVABLY entertaining. As I like to say: "well worth the price of admission!!!" The Good: Paul Nathan is a master performer, the kind of person you can't take your eyes off of for a second. He's terribly funny, in immediate command of any crowd, and able to sense the energy in a room and absolutely run with it. I've never once seen him flummoxed or overwhelmed. He is a talented magician and comedian, just a consummate showman. I have seen Paul Nathan over many years. Few people are genuinely funny and on top of their game and so mindful of the audience. Paul Nathan is one of the best performers I have encountered. His Dark Kabaret always manages to amaze me with the varied performers, the constant holding of my attention and all the eye candy. He has such a delightful personality I am often sad when the show is over. I just want more. (And then I relive the show with people I am with by talking about it for weeks) Unfortunately for those of us in San Francisco the world is calling him forward so this means less of him in SF. I have seen Paul Nathan perform magic in San Francisco and beyond. As far as magicians go, he's super funny and just plain more magical than most. Â I've seen him perform as a corporate entertainer and as a party magician. Absolutely hysterical and totally irreverent! Â I enjoyed him in Dark Kabaret, but on his own, he was brilliant and had me wanting more. Â I saw him on a tiny stage and feel completely privileged to have seen him at this venue. Â The combination of magic and his humor is great, and even sitting 5 feet away and having seen magic my whole life, I couldn't figure out how he did his tricks! Paul Nathan is a San Francisco institution. He's a one man engine behind some of the city's most seminal productions and a truly unique and loveable performer. I first saw him years ago at the Great American Music Hall when he was producing and MCing his Dark Kabaret show. Back then his show was a lone, cutting edge precursor to the city's now prominent culture of burlesque balls and circus chic. Like magic Paul materialized a stunning night of comedy, music, and vaudeville that included everything from chorus line cuties to contortionists to puppets, pasties, and punch lines long before the resurgence of cabaret became so prevalent. Paul's Dark Kabaret show launched many now famous local acts and also showcased celebrated performers like Ann Magnuson and George Clinton. Since then he's done everything from theatre runs to carnival clubs, tech conventions to fetish pageants, even hosting elegant absinthe speakeasies well before the drink's recent legalization (subsequently marking Paul with the dubious honor of being the only person to be charged with selling the libation during its entire 97 year prohibition). Paul's racy notoriety illuminates every event with playful magic and charisma that transforms even the most anonymous audiences into intimate conspiracies of participatory mischief and laughter. His more recent 'Devil in the Deck' show is a fireside voyage to exotic places with hypnotic characters all brought to life through Paul's intricate tale of a cunning card player and the artistry of his tricks.
