Q&As

When I tell people I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, I usually get one of two responses: 1.) You're a what?! Hey, that reminds me, what would do about *blank*? or 2.) How can you talk with people everyday about their problems? Don't you get sad or mad or *insert a feeling word here*? But, for me, to work with a couple or an individual client is really such a joy! I believe I have a gift that helps people feel comfortable and that what they are telling me isn't as crazy as they may think. Even during the heavy, tough stuff. Because for once, this person, that is sitting in front of me, is allowing someone into their world, into their feelings and they have chosen not to suffer alone. I mean that is powerful when a person does that, it's "Sacred Ground". And, who doesn't have a story somewhere in their life where they haven't felt that way? Some days, it is tough! But, that is where our name comes from, THRIVE (v.) meaning to grow, develop or progress toward a goal despite opposition or circumstances. It is what helps our clients grow and our counselors.

Two people inspired me, my grandmother and my bride. My grandmother always saw something in me that seemed to disarm people and provide them encouragement and hope. She was the one that encouraged me to step away from medicine and focus on counseling. She was always having people sit in our kitchen talking with her, and she would just listen, ask questions and challenge them to take those difficult next steps when they were ready. She was a great mentor to me.
My bride of seven years and I have worked with young couples for some time, mentoring them in their relationships. We want people to see what a health marriage looks like, especially in todays world, and that we aren't perfect; we're going to make mistakes. But, how do we care and reconnect during those times of mistakes that really count. She encourages me daily to be great when I am with others.

When a person seeks professional counseling, we don't believe that everything has to be hitting the fan. But, for most that is the case and can't be helped. Problems have been going on for some time, duct tape and clothes hangers have been holding a relationship together or a person is at risk of loosing something really important to them; everything that was FINE is no longer FINE.
If a couple or an individual should look to THRIVE, they are wanting to work on healing, repair or strengthening their marriage and or other relationships. If an individual comes, they may want to do the same things or gain insights and tools that can help them obtain a better grasp on what they need to do.
Counseling helps people look at concerns from different angles, and often times helps them approach the larger, more looming questions at hand. Like a compass, counseling provides the participant(s) with a bearing or direction rather than a quick fix. If you are individual or couple addressing some of these things, we would invite you to take a look at our website or even feel comfortable reaching out to us. We would be glad to help you Thrive again!
