Listen, LA is littered with fitness options. Phoenix Effect is legit though. The best way to describe Phoenix Effect's programming is strength training (like all the best parts of Crossfit, bodybuilding, those instagram fitness model videos you follow in secret) with actual safe quality coaching, consistent programming, and without any of the bs stuff that the internet fitness world has made up. The core of their programming are their LIFT classes which are pretty much focused on strength training. They do more cardio focused classes too, but tbh I don't go to them because I don't care for cardio so I'm not qualified to review those. People new-ish to strength training or fitness: Phoenix Effect is a wonderful place to learn all of the exercises that you only vaguely know about. How to squat correctly. What exercises target what muscles and how to activate and actually use those muscles. How to not injure yourself. How to confidently use a barbell/dumbbell. The beauty of the classes are that you are split into 4 groups essentially, so everyone is doing their own thing at their own pace. That means, you can hide in the corner while you figure stuff out and have the coach come to you, if thats what makes you happy. Or you can socialize and get support from your group. Choose your own adventure. Strength training is glorious once you figure the basics out. Your posture will be awesome! Your butt will be the best butt it can be! Your bones will be so so dense even as you age! If all you care about is aesthetics, it is waaaay easier to get to your ideal body by just monitoring what you eat and throwing a couple of strength training classes in then it is to cardio yourself to death. You will see the best results by consistently doing the programming here instead of hopping around from gym to gym, and you won't stagnate because the programming changes frequently enough.People who have done strength training and think they know things: Phoenix Effect is great because they have solid programming built around foundational movements (deadlift, squat, bench, push/pull movements) but they run a 6 week cycle so the accessory movements, rep scheme, and focus change just enough for you to see your numbers go up but also give you variety. Activation exercises are a part of each class! Yea, no one really loves them, but holy toledo do they improve your big lifts when you actually do them consistently. They also constantly add in new equipment and exercises: sled pushes, yoke, chains, slide pads, sandbags, steel maces, rowers, assault bike, boxes, etc. I transitioned from 5+ years of crossfit to Phoenix, and I am so relieved to not feel any aches and pains from accidentally lifting something too quickly and incorrectly. I feel better and stronger after every workout here instead of feeling like I might have accidentally torn something. My lifts have all gone up! So if you want to actually follow a progressive program where you can reliably track your progress instead of doing a random grab bag of workouts, definitely give this place a try. More...

TPE is amazing.I was a fitness newbie when I started here 4 months ago - really out of curiosity more than anything else. In a short period, it's become a hobby and transformed my life and lifestyle . No kidding!The classes are intense but super fun. The coaches super enthusiastic and know their stuff. More than anything else I love the vibe, sense of community, and the fact that the workouts are always changing, never the same. LIFT and INFERNO are my favorites. Be sure to get a nutrition session with Rachel. Her advice rocks and works!!! If you try them. Trust me on that. Love everything about PE! The coaches are amazing, I'm pushed to do my best, I learn something new every time I go, and the music is legit! It's the best way to start my day. I usually stray from the group fitness experience, but Phoenix Effect has a way of reviving the team spirit in me I never knew I had. There's something about the humility of the instructors and the (sometimes) cute music they play. They know their form and know how to correct others. The Phoenix effect has been one of the best decisions of my life. Seriously life changing!!! The coaches are so supportive and really take their time to teach. Not once have I felt out of place or judged, because both the members and coaches are super warm and welcoming. Don’t worry it is as fun as it is challenging. I’ve never done any real weightlifting of any kind, and Phoenix Effect has got me hooked. The coaches have shown me that I’m capable of doing types of workouts that I didn’t think I could do.

Phoenix Effect coaches are attentive to make sure that you’re doing workouts in proper form to prevent injury - something I was always worried about when lifting. But they also motivate you to try each workout in some fashion - they’re eager to help adapt to your level and strength. It’s great for beginners and advanced!

I have been going to Phoenix effect for three years, I have tried many different gyms since moving to LA and I am continuously impressed with the level of thought and care that Beth and her team put into crafting workouts. As a former high school n college football player and now turned entrepreneur, I have dealt with many injuries and combine that with a crazy travel schedule, it has made working out an hitting goals incredibly difficult. I've been going here for over 2 years now and never have I seen quite as drastic of a change as I have since joining TPE. Their FIRE, INFERNO, and RIPPED classes are my personal favorite . These HIIT classes are some of the best in LA, and the personal guidance and instruction you get from the coaches sets this studio apart from all of its competitors. I don't know if I'll ever leave. I am inspired by this place. I am always challenged and I like how good form takes precedence. I was a bit intimidated at first (I am surrounded by a bunch of gay dudes who are extremely fit and strong), but that soon went away. I was first introduced years ago, and started to frequent more when they moved to the location on Melrose. I spend a small amount of time on that side of town from week to week, so Class Pass is more ideal, logistically. The Phoenix Effect is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. Derek introduced me to everyone and I immediately fell in love with everything. I used to be the kind of person who would avoid free weights and hard things like push ups. All the coaches here encourage you and motivate you to try harder and push your limits. Now I am the kind of person who loves barbell activities and does obstacle races with Jefferson. Beth and Kristin have created a phenomenal, old school, no bells and whistles workout that will leave you panting and dripping sweat. I had been working out on my own for decades and its gotten harder and harder over the years to stay in shape. Especially after turning 40. I felt my body had reached a plateau and the best I could hope for was to maintain my muscle mass and not get fat. I had tried group classes before but always got quickly bored. Most of them are very repetitive to the point where you're just going through the motions. Then, about 6 months ago, a good friend introduced me to Max's bootcamp class. Max took my stats and told me that if I stuck to his program, I would see definition improve throughout my body as I built core strength and lean muscle mass. And he was right. Couldn't be happier with the results. Plus the classes are fun.... with each class feeling different since Max and his killer trainer Ryan Haake continuously change up the routines, add new stations and plays the the perfect energetic music to get the body and mind going. I cannot say enough good things about The Phoenix Effect. It's been nearly a year since I started going and it's changed my life. I started 3x/week and, for the past few months, I started going 5 or 6x/week. I have never ever liked going to gyms because I found them boring and I lacked the motivation to work out on my own and figure out what to do.

That's never been the case here. The fact that I'm still going and going more often is a miracle in itself. All of the coaches are at the top of their game and genuinely nice people. The clients are a great group of Angelenos and I've made friends with many of them. To me, The Phoenix Effect is not just a workout, it's a lifestyle.

I've been a Phoenix Effect unlimited monthly member for 1.5 years now and I'm in the best shape of my life!  The programming is effective and well rounded - each day of the week focuses on a different muscle group and/or movement type (ie. push vs. pull).  I try to do 4-5 workouts there a week and it has truly paid off!  The coaches are highly knowledgeable and push you to push yourself, while putting form and safety first. They never skimp on warm ups, and always offer regressions for exercises to accommodate newcomers and or anyone with injuries.   The community is very welcoming to all types of people, at all fitness levels and even offers optional social events to get to know your classmates better. This place has changed my life! I moved to LA one year ago and stumbled upon this gym while using Classpass. I was looking for a gym that mixes HIIT style workouts with heavy lifting as well. The Phoenix Effect does exactly that. Not only did I find the workouts to suit my needs, but this gym goes above and beyond. The community of people that attend are ACTUALLY friends with one another. They do social events on weekends that get the community out of the gym and intermingling with one another. They do nutrition challenges that help you learn about the diet you should be keeping along with your workouts. They do charity Spartan Races to raise money for different causes. It's really a full package deal. If you're curious about their formats, here's how I'd describe them:BURN - the typical HIIT workout. Roughly 10 stations of various exercises that you rotate between on intervals for under a minute or so.LIFT - a class more focused on building up your strength/form, less about ripping through exercises. Typically 4 stations, 10 minutes at each. 1-2 of those stations is a barbell movement (squats, bench press, deadlifts, power cleans, etc.).FIRE - similar to BURN but less stations, longer intervals, and more complex "crossfit-esque" movements (i.e. tire flips, rope climbs, sled pulls, etc.). You also run around the block every time they yell "FIRE." Keeps it interesting!INFERNO - shorter HIIT workout, but higher intensity. Usually you're trying to do as many rounds of the given exercises in the allotted time (maybe 20 minutes or so).BARBELL PARTY - the first half of class is spent teaching you an olympic lift and the second half is spent practicing it in a mini HIIT style workout.Hope this helps! If you're looking to get stronger, have correct form, and feel and look good, there is no other gym in LA I recommend! I absolutely love this place! ! Found it originally while on classpass and couldn't be happier that I switched 8 months ago to the unlimited pass here. They offer a variety of classes to meet different goals, and help you decide which combo is right to meet your needs. I love their burn (HIIT) class as well as their Lift class - they're great at explaining each movement, then having you learn with a light bar/weight, and then building at a pace which prevents injury. The community I've gained while going here is also unparalleled - people workout together, pushing and supporting each other, and also often socialize together outside the gym. I have been a part of TPE for a year, and The Phoenix Effect has no doubt, changed my life! It is way more then a gym! It is absolutely the best, all inclusive health, wellness, and workout program! In addition to being a family and community! I have been amazed over and over, by the attention to detail, the motivation, inspiration, talent, and awesomeness of everyone who is a part of making TPE the incredible place it is! There are so many phenomenal programs, they provide to help every person and athlete, no matter what level, reach beyond their wildest expectations, surpass their goals, and create new ones they never thought, can be achieved! Be it, nutrition challenges, spartan race obstacle training, mobility trainings, PR testing, and the list goes on, with your personal achievements tracked, class pictures taken to celebrate the achievement of each workout, immense support to every member, TPE has best social calendar, giving everyone more opportunities to become a closer family and support system! The TPE Facebook page for athletes, provides constant support, and prepares you with the details of the workout planning for the coming week, which happens to be the TOP of the line, always something new and keeps it challenging for all, there are also regressions for those with injuries or limitations. I have been in many gyms, and programs, the results at TPE are unparalleled. The special cycles dedicated to focusing on specific goals, adds another dimension of fun! And the results really show! I have always felt so welcome and loved, I feel so comfortable there, never any judgement, or pretentiousness, everyone is so excepting. TPE has helped me take care of ME, it has been therapeutic, I always love coming to class, it feels like a party! Got bored of my gym and decided to check out The Phoenix Effect after hearing about it from someone I know. Absolutely love it here! I drive out of my way to come here at 6 am and it's totally worth it. Awesome energy, amazing instructors, and fantastic classes with great variety. I always leave completely spent (in a good way, not the painful OMG-I-just-tore-something kind of way!). I've been to some other boot camp places around the city and they pale in comparison. Amazing, amazing gym! There are a lot of studios in the city.  You can pretty much get a good workout wherever you go.  The things that sets a studio apart are the people.  Beth and Kristin just flat out get it!  I've only taken Kristin's class and she is best-in-class!  I describe her as the Nicest Little Spitfire you ever want to meet.  Great instructor and even better person. I've attended Phoenix Effect daily (and now twice daily) for the past 18 months. The coaches are highly knowledgeable and motivating, and will provide feedback on form, nutrition, and general health both in and outside of class. Every coach has a different character that makes each class unique and enjoyable. Exercise rotations are sensible and diverse; in fact, I have yet to attend any type of exercise or health establishment where a variety of exercises and equipment is utilized. The owners take pride in the gym as a space and are constantly making new additions to spice up the workouts and challenge us in new ways. Most importantly, this is an authentic community. If you are looking for friends, business associates, and just genuine support during your workout, this is the place you want to be. Charity events, nutrition challenges, personal training, social get togethers...I can't say enough about the intimacy, and how much that contributes to the results. All sessions are programmed by an expert coordinator, but all music playlists reflect the personality of the coaches and purpose of the workout. You'll hear anything from hip-hop to EDM to death metal to punk on any given day. Active social networkers and private pages and feeds where group and individual photos are posted so that you can track your results, ask questions, and just generally enjoy yourselves together outside of class. I expected this class to be challenging and it didn't disappoint! I booked with Open Sweat- super easy (great alternative to Class Pass, too! ) and started off with the Phoenix Burn class. CJ, the instructor, was extremely nice and welcoming! He did a great job of explaining everything and creating a comfortable environment. The class was difficult and definitely kicked my butt (more specifically my butt and thigh muscles, along with the rest of my body). The Phoenix Effect: I have never had so much fun working this hard in my life. The coach's energy, support, and enthusiasm coupled with the patron's perseverance, inspiration, and motivation is the perfect storm for success. It makes working out fun.
