We are a family owned garden center with 2 locations. Both locations are tucked away off the beaten path, but once you find us you’ll be back again and again. Our Naperville garden center is located on Plank Road, 3 blocks east of Naper Blvd and just south of Ogden Ave.
Our Aurora garden center is on Montgomery Road, 2 blocks north of Ogden Ave and 10 minutes west of the Fox Valley Mall. If you’re coming from the west, the Aurora location is 5 minutes from the Route 30 and Ogden Ave intersection.
Started in 1936, our Naperville location grow into and overflow every inch of the 4.5-acre site. Each season, new displays pop up with ideas to incorporate into your own garden. Shop our extensive plant selection, stroll through our Learning Gardens or just relax by the pond. Opened in 1989, our 18 acre Aurora location also has many Learning Gardens for you to wander through and gather ideas. We like to think of this location as our family-friendly farm. Kids can discover several play areas and even a magical hidden garden! Find the perfect garden gift inside our charming historic farmhouse, built in 1860 by A.T. Thatcher, we moved the farmhouse to save it from demolition. In 2000, the city of Aurora gave the farmhouse landmark status.
Both locations are filled with inspirational gardens, a wide selection of plants, knowledgeable staff, and gardening fun. Fests, classes, and workshops for adults and kids! Shop in a beautiful garden setting for perennials, natives, annuals, herbs, fruits, vegetables, roses, groundcovers, trees, shrubs, seeds, bulbs, containers, and supplies. Explore our gift shop to discover thoughtful gifts, miniatures, and unique garden accents. We also offer Landscape Design services and container design services both in store and at your home.
Wonderful nursery full of flowers, bushes, and trees. Find plants that you won't see elsewhere and wonderfully helpful and knowledgable employees. I will be going back.
Patricia Du Charme
I've been here several times and can easily spend hours looking around at everything. The Farmhouse gift shop is a treasure trove for gift giving.
We had a large area we wanted to plant a perennial butterfly garden in. Betty was very helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. She guided us through our selections quickly (a lot of selections at the Growing Place). The garden turned out beautifully. I highly recommend this garden center. More...
Awesome garden center with quality plants and extremely knowledgeable staff. Both locations are so enjoyable to shop!

Great selection and beautiful setup
This place is adorable with an amazing selection of plants, pots and accents for your garden. Staff is friendly, knowledgable and happy to help. Love this gem!
Such a special place to find all varieties of plants and flowers, right down to some special ones you can't find in your regular, everyday gardening centers. Worth the trip. Great employee's who know their stuff! More...
Loved it, great selection with very helpful happy people
Huge selection. Way bigger than it looks. Weird location and parking was crazy. Super friendly staff.
Ooo! This is a good one! I love the big shady trees, the staff that seem to be enjoying themselves thoroughly, the selection, and the prices are fair for the Naperville area. Great pots too! There are also small display gardens showing you what will grow in different conditions. It's SO helpful to see what plants do in the ground. More...
Awesome selection. Still plenty of great plants to dig holes for!
Awesome! The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. The plants are much better quality than the big box stores.
Pros: Locally owned, pretty place, great selection, knowledgeable staff, can find flowers/plants/trees/shrubs that you sometimes can't find elsewhere locally.Cons: Pricey. They commission out to contractors who do the planting for you at your home but you have to wait at home all day the day of install because the contractors don't tell you a timeframe of when they'll be there. No call, nothing. Just waiting all day. I don't know any business that does that to customers. More...
Beautiful plants, very knowledgeable staff. I will definitely be returning here!
Always love visiting The Growing Place. Fun for the kids and adults alike. The day we were there they even had live music, that was great!
Staff aiways helpful, offer interesting workshops. Love this place!
This place is super amazing!! The staff was wonderful!! Will be coming hear a lot!!
Beautiful perennials attracting hummingbirds every summer. Two locations Naperville and Aurora, both great, with wonderful gardens.
This is a very well organized delightful outdoor garden center to visit. They sell everything from shrubs, trees. roses, annuals, perennials and vegetables. Granted Home Depot prices are much cheaper they did beat out Wanamakers prices. I bought knockout roses from them because they carried the coral color I wanted and Home Depot did not. Home Depot's price for the same container $26, The Growing Place price $35 and Wannamakers $46. They do carry a bigger selection of roses and Shrubs then Home Depot and granted they're better taken care of compared to Home Depot. The sad thing is not a lot of annuals and expensive And none of the locations I visited sell flats of annuals anymore you now pay more for half flats. If I cannot find what I want at the Home depot, or can't make it to my favorite nursery Sunrise farms in Grant park Illinois I do visit this nursery. The people are super friendly what keeps me at bay are the prices More...
The only outdoors I have is my apartment balcony and really only a few months of the year can anything survive there. They have been really great her in guiding me to plants that can be brought indoor in the winter and make my balcony nice in the summer. I followed all of their tips and advice and the plants are holding up nicely More...
Incredible selection of all sorts of plants. Tons of edible as well as others. Large planter and decoration area as well. A little pricey for the decorations, but the plants were reasonable
Place is a tad on the pricey side, but they have a great selection of EVERYTHING! It's enjoyable shopping here because you're strolling through such beautiful areas. They are very nice here and very helpful too! More...
This place is really outstanding. Great flowers to choose from and great service from the staff.
Knowledgeable staff who are very helpful. Great selection with unique varieties you can’t find at big box stores. Fun events for all ages.

Great selection of plants. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly.
Huge selection and very helpful staff.
Great selection, great helpers, all around favorite place to shop for plants ever. The quality of plants is excellent as well! Always grow well and bloom proficiently! More...
I've been getting my vegetable plants from here the past few years. The workers are always friendly and willing to help. They have a sandpit and wooden train for the kiddos too. Our raspberry bushes we planted last year are coming back nicely this year. More...
A great place to buy all your garden needs. You might pay a little more, but its worth it.
The people who work at the Growing Place should be blessed for sharing what they know. One woman steered me away from trying to grow cherry tomatoes in pots (they get to be 7 feet long!), and another gave me information about the watering needs of five plants I intended to plant in one pot. The million bells weren't going to like the same amount of water that the sweet potato vine needs. Thanks for making my growing season more successful! More...

Love the Growing Place Center. I can always count on healthy plants and always know they stand behind all they sell. Love my new black/blue Selvia plant!❤️
Everyone here is always very helpful.
Fun time painting pots for mother's day.
Love it here! They have everything you would want. Plants are clearly labeled with helpful information to assist you in choosing the right plant for the right place.
Very helpful staff and gorgeous plants. Very easy to get to and plenty of parking. If you're looking for native plants they have a huge selection.
Great Place for your garden!
I absolutely love this place. They have a great assortment of any plant you can think of. The staff is so helpful with questions and great at recommending plants for your needs. I go here for all my plant needs.
I had heard about this nursery/garden center from a friend. I decided to stop in and I'm so glad I did! This place is huge, which is hard to see from the road. There is a tremendous selection of beautiful flowers, trees, shrubs...anything you could want for your yard. The service was phenomenal the entire visit. I was greeted at the entrance, and multiple employees asked if I had been helped as I walked around despite the place being quite busy. When I did have questions, I easily found helpful employees who were knowledgeable about the specific plants I was looking at. Even the checkout was great and I received more planting tips about the items I bought. This is my new go to garden center despite others being closer to my home. Keep up the awesome service! More...
Great place for knowledgeable staff on gardening
Love their stock and gardens
Great service and extremely knowledgeable
It was good it had thinks for kids to do every month and flowers are price
Great selection of plants at a very reasonable price. The staff is super helpful, knowledgeable, and not pushy in any way. Highly recommend!!
Never a problem, always super nice and very helpful! Great warranty (I know what I'm talking about, I had to use it a couple of times), great membership program and discounts. Both locations are gorgeous, plenty of parking except on the biggest event days (and even then it's mostly a matter of a two-minute walk). Nice selection of plants - if they have them, you can plant them. More...
Best selection of annuals and perennials around. This year their selection of pots is absolutely fantastic too. I want almost all of them.

Absolute heaven for healthy plants that are supported by a knowledgeable helpful staff of plant lovers! ❤️ Can’t wait to explore and learn more from them as I pick out my favorites there this Spring !
Personally love this. The staff answers questions and/or direct you to a specific person who does.
Can’t wait till Spring to go stock up on my flowers & plants! Large property with huge variety & helpful staff! A little pricey but worth it for what has always been my healthiest of plants! Also offer classes & have fun functions throughout the open months! Worth a drive out (thou Lucky I live very close to this amazing business!) More...

Wonderful helpful staff, great idea place.
A hidden gem
I love this place! If you sign up for their rewards they send you special deals through email which is awesome. They often have special events to make fun projects. We went for the pumpkin palooza and made decorative succulent pumpkins which was so fun! More...
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Huge selection of plants.
Very knowledgeable, helpful, & friendly people. Also great prices this time of year!
Always a good selection of whatever you need and more!
Fantastic people with fantastic plants.
Went there for a mosaic pumpkin class today. Regretfully the teacher of the class left sick and it was canceled at the last minute. No reflection on the growing place as she had just rented the space from them. They were so accommodating and gave all of us a big beautiful mum plant complementary. . Hopefully the teacher will refund our money! More...
We went for pumpkin palooza! Wow let's start with the location just gorgeous, beautifully and creatively arranged ! The service was phenomenal, every associate was friendly and seemed very happy to be there! The selection of products was great, a little pricey on the stuff not the plants... but it's not Wal-Mart so I get it! We went on the hay ride, painted pumpkins, built pumpkin race cars, we didn't do the pump succulent, we wanted to! They had gigantic pumpkins all decorated and we got to vote for our favorites! The scavenger hunt was adorable! So glad I seen this event and will definitely be switching my garden center ! More...
One of my favorite nurseries to visit!

Love the variety of plants and how they are organized alphabetically! Also, I always enjoy looking at the sample gardens on display.
Nice nursery with friendly and helpful staff! Lots of fun events throughout the seasons as well including kid-friendly events
Gorgeous nursery with wide selection of plants and gardening necessities. Also, there is a beautiful gift shop to peruse within the old, restored farmhouse, and lots of fairy garden goodies. Go and enjoy!
This place is full of beauty.
A little pricey and they didn’t carry everything I wanted. Nice layout, everything looked healthy. They even have a play area for kids.
This is such a cute place
Tons of plants, supplies & knick knacks for your garden.
Very satisfy. Very satisfy. Very friendly.
Very helpful to a novice gardener like me. Great choice of plants !
Lovely huge selection
Nice selection. Somewhat pricey.
Great selection and very friendly people. Dogs welcome
Fresh Kentucky Sweet corn and fresh red tomatoes for sale today!
We go there for ideas and buy from them because of their quality shrub's, bushes and flowers
Plants galore, every thing you might need, they have
Ken J Marks
Word in advance.... they are going to be pricier than the big box Lowe's/Home Depot retailers, however, you get what you pay for, and what you get is more than fair versus what you pay. Example; we went here to get portalaca that were not available at Lowe's. They were much bigger, more mature and much hardier than what we remembered getting last year at the big box store. Additionally they have a wide selection and knowledgeable personnel that are helpful answering questions and providing suggestions. If you buy something here, you can count on it prospering once you plant it. More...
Beautiful little showcase gardens, great plant variety, very helpful staff!
Beautiful gardens and great costumer service!
Love the selection, the employees are helpful and knowledgeable. You can find plants you can't find at your normal hardware store.
This place is super cute and the plants are very nicely organized. The staff is knowledgable. Handy wagons for dragging about plants are available.
Great for perennials and garden ideas. Less annual and tree selection
Great place, selection and service!

Very friendly and informative! A ton of selection!
We recently had The Growing Place design and plant two garden areas in our yard . The project exceeded our expectations and both the landscape designer and the installation crew were wonderful to work with. We highly recommend The Growing Place ! More...
It's a completely different experience than going to Home Depot or Lowes because the employees actually know a lot about plants. The staff is friendly and will spend time walking you through to find the right plants for your garden. The prices are little bit higher than Home Depot/Lowes but they carry a much larger variety of plants. I took off one star for the higher prices. Staff and selection of plants I would give 10 stars if I could. More...
They had the milkweed that I have been looking for! Healthy and sturdy plants too. I plan to be back soon!
My kids and I love the Growing Place! All the plants I need (and so many more!) And a fun sandbox and slide for the kids.

My favorite Garden Center ... I love the variety and quality of the plants. I alway enjoy coming to the Naperville Store
Was at your Naperville location yesterday and I want you to know how helpful and pleasant it was to deal with Liz from you annuals section. She is a keeper!

I am always amazed by the knowledge when I visit the Aurora location. I came in last weekend and showed Joanie what I though might be weeds only to find she immediately identified the 1" saplings as Rudbeckia. How nice it is to know what is sprouting. We are always asked if we need help and greeted with a friendly smile. Love to visit! More...
I personally have only come here for decorations and bulbs but they have a lot of options and it's a very cute center.

Love this Garden Center. They have some of the COOLEST and most unique plants around !! I live a little far away but it's worth the drive & I constantly get people stopping in front of my house to ask what this or that is & it's ALWAYS from The Growing Place Naperville.
Monika Pandya Burchfield
Little pricey, but the Staff is knowledgeable and I love they have a sand pit for kids to play in while I shop.

We love The Growing Place! We’ve been coming here for years to buy flowers, outdoor decor and holiday decorations. This is great place to visit all year round. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and creative. They work with a few local landscapers to complete larger jobs. Highly recommend! More...

I LOVE how they have things out in gardens that are themed (shade or butterfly, etc) so you can get an idea of what things will look like grouped together...
Best experience for a gardener looking for high quality plants that are also healthy for birds and bees, which is important to me. There’s better place for gaining knowledge and ideas from the huge variety of annuals, perennials, vegetables and spice gardens you will see if you visit. Highly recommend! More...
If you're seeking high quality plants (especially natives and fruit trees) and a knowledgeable staff, this is the place to go. I suggest not trying to order anything from them though, just buy what's on the lot. I knocked off a star because two years in a row they have never called us to let us know if something we ordered was available. More...
Love this garden center! Well organized by plant type (annual or perennial), shrubs, trees and bushes. We went specifically for their selection of fairy garden plants and accessories which are awesome! I really like this garden center because they have unique plants that you don't necessarily find at "Home Depot" type stores. Really nice garden decorations as well that are unique. Prices are average for most things but honestly everything is well taken care of. More...
This was the best decision I've ever made. Landscapers quoted me $6,000-$8,000 to put plants in. I paid $80 for Mary to design our garden and another $550 in plants. Of the 30 something plants we purchased, only 1 didn't make it but the rest of them are thriving. Our garden is gorgeous and I couldn't be any happier. More...
We love this place. The best quality anywhere near by. A bit expensive but the people ( lots of them) are very knowledgeable and extremely helpful from assistance in finding items to suggestions of what might work for our gardens to being generous when something didn't make it ( returned item) to assistance getting plants etc to and into the car. Well worth going to; even if it's inconvenient ( which it definitely is not for us). More...
Everyone who work there was so friendly and helpful. It was such a beautiful place to visit.
There was this awesome guitar guy, Jason Benefield, play there today. It was a really cool place.
Great service, one of the best selections in the area. Please be nice to the people here they go through a lot to help a lot of people with confusing topics!! Esp in the busier months. Also do research before you go here or to any garden center, it will make the process easier for everyone involved More...

Best philly cheese sandwich ever!!! Best home made fries..
Love this place and the qualified professionals they have to help the rest of us! It is a candy store to me and I never fail to get the help I need putting plants together, ordering specific varieties, and purchasing trees. From the gift area to the perennials to the annuals, I have never met an individual who wasn't kind, helpful and happy to be there. While some say your prices might be a bit high, if it is a quality product you want delivered with knowledge and a smile, look no further. More...
Great place, great plants, great return policy that you'll appreciate if your new plant dies within a year.
This was our first visit to the Growing Place. The staff is very friendly and knowledgable. They will help you pick out the right plants for the location and soil type. There are also many unique yard decorations that are reasonably priced. It was early in the season so the garden were still pretty empty but you can get a lot of inspiration from the examples here. Great selection! Such nice displays, and friendly employees.
I love this place the kids and I have made a bunch of fun loving memories as they have free days for children, but this place allows for sitting on very well placed benches, paths are kept clean so no falling hazards here, plus it's almost peaceful like a zen Garden
I live within walking distance of the Growing Place and each fall fo the last few years I have walked over with my children, I have an in home childcare, and we visit the fall decoration areas. It's a good place to take some cute fall photos. There is a pumpkin contest and other things to see. There is a sand pit, wooden train, fairy garden, large wooden pumpkin puzzle and other things for the children to explore. The staff have always been helpful and pleasant. They do have a public restroom but they do not have any sort of concession stand like some places similar to this do. Overall, if you are in the area it's worth taking a look or when they are having an event would be better. More...

This place is beautiful, set up so nicely, just like your in someones garden, , plants are put in rows on elevated shelves allowing easy observation, every plant is labeled and has a care description even a novice gardener( like muah) can understand, annuals, perennials, trees, they have an abundance of everything, with a really large variety of Rose plants.Within the grounds are small buildings that house floral products and garden ornaments, even fairy garden miniatures. The staff is very helpful and friendly almost gave me the impression they are there voluntarily to keep up with their personal garden and tend the nurseries permanent plants, which by way are so well displayed, its enjoyable to just do a walk through and take a breather! Impressed,,, More...

Get out your checkbook - on the expensive side for plants, but great layout and displays, fantastic selection, and plenty of friendly, helpful staff on hand.
I randomly discovered The Growing Place today, I will never shop anywhere again for my landscaping and flowers again. Bought a tree, the gentleman was amazingly helpful and answered all of my questions... and I asked a lot!
Pricey but great quality, selection and friendly knowledgeable staff.

Family-owned and proud of their nursery which has been around for decades. More...
This is the gardeners playground. You'll find most anything you want here and a helpful staff to boot. But you'll also wonder what happened to the cash in your wallet at the same time.
Beautiful! Great selection. Extremely friendly!
There was no one in the farm area to even ask.
Nice garden place, kind of expensive.
Staff have so much helpful knowledge. They really do serve to please. Give yourself lots of time to wander.
Selection is incredible, staff is excellent. Heat place to visit
Great place with good selection all you need to make your garden beautiful
In the children's classic "The Secret Garden", author Frances Hodgson Burnett said "If you look the right way, you can see that the whole world is a garden." At The Growing Place, it feels like the whole world IS a garden. Find a bench even if you don't intend to buy. --but be warned, if you're like me, you'll still end up buying. This is not a Lowe's or a Home Depot even if it has the words "garden center" in the name. It's a garden. A garden where you can purchase the beautiful things you see. They have pots in every color and in every size and the plants and flowers are a plenty. --The selection is HUGE! I used to endlessly search for beautiful plants and pots before my neighbor told me to come here. Now, I wouldn't even consider going elsewhere. With the selection and a staff who can answer all of my questions, it's my first stop. Do you know what you also won't get at a super center? Someone who'll come to your house and help you figure out which plants will do best in which spots! Um... very helpful! For only $100 (for an hour) and $40 per half hour after that, one of their design team members will walk the area with you and discuss your landscaping goals. You will receive personalized notes on:How to work with your problem areas.Design solutions and plant recommendations.Plant health care, identification and maintenance instructions.Gardening techniques, tips and solutions.A rough sketch of the area and/or notes of plant placement and spacing.Handouts on topics discussed and links to resources.A coupon towards a one-time plant purchase. If I knew more about plants, I'd actually love to work here. But since I should not be giving plant advice to anybody....... More...

I just Love this place! I Love the way the plants/gardens are displayed and the awesome selection of garden decorations.

Always find something, even to just enjoy their platings.
Mini garden festival
Love this place! Another lovely customer appreciation day, thanks!
The Growing Place is a Naperville staple. It's been around since 1936 when it was Emma's Perennials and Rich and Carol Massat took over in 1973. In 1976 it became The Growing Place. It's been family owned and operated since then. TGP is a beautiful place. They have carefully selected annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs. The have a fabulous perennial selection with items you can't find elsewhere. I highly recommend either the Naperville or Aurora locations as both are equally as nice. More...
I can't say enough about how much I love this place! It is so lovely and serene, they should call it "The Secret Garden" or "Garden of Zen"! Seriously, even if you don't need anything other than a quiet place to de-stress, I would tell you to come here and spend some time - you'll feel like you stepped into another world. But if you need some gardening goods, this is definitely where you need to be! The selection is stellar, and you can get tons of ideas just by checking out the various "gardens". Got a place that floods a lot from rain or your sump-pump? Cool - check out the marsh garden. Got an area with crap dirt and no sun? Not a problem - check out the dry shade garden. The settings go on and on, and If you're like me, you might end up wishing for a bigger yard or some problem areas just so you could buy some of the cool and unusual examples. The staff is über helpful (how you like my umlaut? ;) If you sign up for the newsletter you get coupons and great gardening tips; and if you sign up for the rewards program, you earn freebies. OH - and they have a HUGE selection of fountains and yard ornaments - I love coming here for gift shopping. They even have classes and events - many of which are free; the newsletter will keep you up to date on what's being offered. Every once in a while I wince a little at the prices, but this is what I've learned over years of shopping around: the plants are well-established, they come with guarantees, they don't have a bunch of bugs, and they're often things you won't find anywhere else. After checking out a lot of nurseries through Groupon and/or doing the sales at the big box places, I've come to appreciate the level of quality & variety I find at The Growing Place - not to mention the ambiance & service! I feel like the prices are well-worth what I get here. "Take my money - please!!" More...
The quality and selection of plants is superior to other nurseries in the area. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and eager to provide guidance and direction on plant selection. I've been going here for years and recommend The Growing Place to my neighbors. More...
I'm a fan. I've been here a couple times already this year. It's kind of relaxing and fun. They have a good selection of plants, both flowering and eating varieties. Many of the more common items are no more than what you'd spend at a big box type store, and the quality is great. Even when it's busy, it's not really crowded. I'll be back! More...
I can't say I know much about gardening, but the friendly staff here make me feel like my thumb could conceivably be green. The consultation service was worth the 80 bucks to help us set up a rain garden. I'm never going to find outdoor work as stimulating as reading, but if I need a magnolia bush, this is where I'm going. More...
Been coming here three seasons Ina row and enjoy it more every time. The selection of everything is very nicely curated - a thoughtful selection of trees, shrubs, an interesting mix of garden ornaments and urns, and the requisite wild array of annuals and vegetables. The setting is delightful, winding among the different scenes as you climb the gentle hill it feels like a walk in a beautiful home garden - cleverly laid out and lush but not fussy. We have been helped by staff in trees and ornaments and we're really pleased each time with the advice and accommodations we got. Especially appreciated the person who stopped us from purchasing a little shrub because it wasn't the best, and they called us with new stock a couple days later and it was so much better! The staff helping loading cars is also the nicest bunch of young men you'll meet. Cordial, friendly, genuine, they are careful with your new purchases and your car. More...

Best garden center / nursery around, always knowledgeable people to answer questions and give advice! ;)
Beautiful selection and nice display gardens. I like how each item is labeled and contains useful information. Very helpful service.
Beautifully displayed, quality plants. An abundance of friendly, knowledgeable staff. They make me want to dig up my whole yard!
If I ran a retail business I would be proud if I could model it after The Growing Place. Not only do they offer good, healthy plants, the customer service is fabulous. Everyone we've encountered has been very willing to help in a friendly, supportive way. We initially went in to get some ideas for redoing our front and back yard. We decided to have a consultant (Julie) come to the house and make recommendations.Once we started talking with her we realized how beneficial it would be to have her draw a plan. She was a fountain of knowledge which she shared freely. We initially didn't think we needed a plan but we are very glad we did. Doing so saved us enough money that we could afford to do both the front and rear yards this year instead of making it a 2-3 year project. We more than got our money's worth from her. I highly recommend getting some advice from their advisors and maybe working up a personalized a plan too. With the plan, we were able to do a lot of the work ourselves and with our lawn mowing service. We did have their contractor install the plants - and he and his crew did a great job there too. I highly recommend letting them install them. They worked with us to position the plants exactly where we wanted them and then they planted them in a professional manner. Some years ago we bought some plants from them and a couple of those plants died. They replaced them with no hassle at all, even though we didn't know for sure why the plants didn't make it. They really stand behind their work. More...

I love this place. I have recently begun renewing my original landscaping and am adamant about incorporating native and wildlife friendly plants. This place fits the bill. I am an avid birder and the more that stop by in my yard the happier I am. I have never been disappointed with my purchases or the selection they carry. Any questions I had or plants that I was looking for help was quickly available. This is my go to spot for hard to find items. Most big box stores carry the same old things which are not natives and do nothing for the ecosystem. More...
I love this place! I come here to The Growing Place with my family all the time. They take the best care of their plants, and their plants are the healthiest plants I've ever seen at a store. The employees are always so helpful and knowledgeable about the plants they have. It is very reassuring that they are able to answer all my questions or that they can help me find what I'm looking for based on what I need. This is probably the only place I will go for plants from now on. More...
Beautiful place! We are here ALL the time... sometimes just to take in the surroundings. Our family NEVER misses the fall festival in September. It gets bigger and better with each passing year. ~Altenbernt Law, Oswego More...
So impressed with this place....it almost makes me feel like I have a green thumb! Ok I really don't know what I am doing but having recently acquired a yard, I have to figure it out fast! The location & facility of the Growing Place itself is so inspirational. They have planted various gardens showcasing shade perennials, full sun perennials, a miniature garden, and more. It's actually so relaxing just strolling thru the gardens that you almost forget that it is a garden nursery where you buy your potted plants. The gardens help you imagine what possibilities you could have with your own yard! Now I was seeing a light at the end of the weedy tunnel!Even better, we had one of their consultants Julie come over to our house to give us some ideas of what to plant based on our preferences, lifestyle and sun/shade in yard. She identified the weeds and gave advice on maintaining, pruning, and design. More...
This is a wonderful, peaceful place to go and just wander around through the various different gardens they have set up. Sometimes when I am just a bit stressed I go over to The Growing Place and just walk around and, to me, it is nice and calming. Everyone there is extremely nice and knowledgeable - I would almost say that if they don't have it, it must not be real. Flowers, shrubs, herbs, water gardens, bubbling fountains, shade gardens, the versatility is unbelievable. I can always count on them to direct me properly and answer my questions. When a person has a small urban plot it really helps to have a staff who will walk with you and make suggestions what will work best. And they have plenty of butterflies too. You can't go wrong shopping here for all your planting needs. More...
This place is amazing! I've been coming here over the years to help my parents with their garden. Now that my husband and I have our own yard, we were excited to stop by The Growing Place to get started on our transformation. The staff was extremely helpful and very friendly. We explained what type of garden we were going for and they walked us through the whole place (which is quite large) to show us the many, many options we could choose. They answered all of our questions, and even came back to us when they had another idea for our garden after we had parted ways. They also offer guarantees on their perennials and shrubs/trees. Which made us feel better since we are first time gardenersWe are Growing Place converts and will definitely be going back next year, and most likely again later this summer. More...

More...
I finally got here last summer on a Sunday after church, as I was going back home. The place is much larger than it first seems from the street. There's actually quite a bit of parking. They laid out the various plants by type, so shadier plants are under the shade of some lovely old trees. It's such a lovely time to come and walk through. Everything is lovingly and carefully arranged. All the plants are in perfect condition when you buy them. All the staff is uber helpful and ready to find an answer to your questions.Take advantage of the green carts-you never know how much you'll like and decide to buy until you're walking around. Those carts are light and easy to maneuver, and come in so handy!I think this is the best place to come if you're a green thumb newbie, like me, or an experienced wisened old gardener who knows their stuff. They host amazing and fun events, so check their calendar online or flyers at the checkout. The service at the Growing Place is great! The first time I went, one of the staff helped me for about 15 minutes. I was looking for plants to put in a particularly wet part of my lawn (at least it's wet when we don't have a drought). I was looking at the water plants, when I was informed that what I really want is wet tolerant plants. The difference is that water plants expect water all the time, while wet tolerant plants can handle both wet and dry spells (not too dry). I've since spent a good deal of money there, which I'm sure will continue next spring. They can be a bit pricey compared to the big box home centers, but the service and quality of the plants make up for it. Here are a few tips to save a few bucks.1. Purchase perennials in the fall. They'll go on deep discounts (up to 50%), but you will be limited to what's left (many of the late blooming perennials).2. Sign up for their rewards club. They keep track of how much you spend and send you gift certificates when you hit milestones. It keeps accumulating over the years, doesn't expire, and each certificate steps up in value (first is $5, second is $10 and goes up to $40 before it starts over at $5).3. Sign up for the email newsletter. They'll send you coupons each week. More...
This is my happy place. I love coming here on a pretty day simply to wander about and look at everything. The Growing Place is 4.5 acres large and the nursery is divided into sections of perennials for shade, perennials for sun, vines & groundcovers, native plants, trees & shrubs, annuals, miniature plants (for fairy gardens), vegetables & fruits (in season). They carry a broader variety of spring and fall bulbs than is typically available in big box stores. You can also find a few seeds -- from the Seed Savers Exchange, no less -- tucked away in the Gift Shop. I currently have heirloom rutabagas grown from seeds purchased there that I'm just about to harvest. Though you'll pay more than at big box stores, you'll find varieties here that simply aren't available at big box stores. Perennials are likely to be bigger too. I think the prices are generally reasonable for the size and quality of plants received. They have a large offering of tomatoes in spring: heirlooms & hybrids; grape, cherry, beefsteak & everything in between; red, green, yellow, orange, brown, and striped. Don't wait too late in the season to come make your selection. Favorites sell out fast! The Growing Place has an especially large collection of herbs too. It's one of the few places I can find chervil plants. The Growing Place sells a range of attractive planters and garden ornaments for big and little gardens. These are scattered throughout The Growing Place's display gardens so you can get an idea of how a particular ornament might look once you get it home. The display gardens also help you see how certain plants will look in your garden once established.I have never been to The Growing Place when there was a shortage of employees. It's always easy to find someone to assist you. Everyone seems knowledgeable too. And if you ask a question out of one employee's area of expertise, they will find someone else on the staff who has the expertise to answer your question.I think it's worth your while to seek out The Growing Place. When it comes to gardening I need all the help I can get. The staff at the growing place is extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They can help you select plants that will do well depending upon if you need sun or shade plants. The have a huge selection of annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, trees, shrubs and garden accessories. The quality of their plants is outstanding and is backed up with a one year guarantee. They are very busy on the weekends but they have a decent amount of parking. More...
Awesome nursery that is soooo flipping huge. Staff is very helpful even when it isn't their department or know-how. Great selection and decent prices.
I love going here and just walking around. It's beautiful. Buy my flowers here, they are well priced and different types of breeds of flowers I haven't seen anywhere else. Better go early in the season though, cause when I went they were running out of flowers, because this place is packed. It's not a secret or anything, lol. I just wish I would have been able to find more herbs or vegetables. More...
My God... this place is huge and has it all (including a play area for the kids who get bored looking at plants with their parents). It's almost like walking through the Chicago Botanic Gardens, but with everything for sale. The selection is huge, the employees are friendly and knowledgeable, and the prices, while higher than what you'd probably pay at Home Depot, are not that bad. I wish I had known about this place sooner. More...
My wife is the gardener but I am the muscle behind the garden. Even I enjoy browsing this place and talking to the staff, who are knowledgeable and happy to help. Of course, I end up with opinions, which are occasionally heeded.Actually, this is a pleasant place to spend a warm summer afternoon, under the shade of the trees, envisioning how to make the yard more enjoyable. I love this place! Wonderful selection, warm and knowledgeable staff. I don't mind paying a little bit more for this kind of quality - the plants are robust and well-grown. It's hard to resist 'just one more'. : ) More...
This is quite the little gem of a nursery/gardening center.I've purchased a number of things from TGP over the years: perennials and annuals, vegetables and herbs, even a few shrubs and an occasional garden ornament (as Karen noted, they're overpriced but I look for the marked down items) and pretty much everything has grown well and flourished. The selection is exceptional and varieties abundant. Year-over-year, they carry a core collection of plants, so if you want to expand your flower beds, you can count on them to have what you planted last year.Their service is also exceptional. The staff is friendly and they work hard. It's easy to snag a person if you have questions because they're always out and about amongst the plants, watering, cleaning up, consolidating flats, you name it.Two terrific features of their grounds are: 1) They have a section framed out where they've cultivated perennials over the years and they've landscaped it with garden ornaments.2)At the end of aisles, they create little vignettes of complementary plants to showcase color or texture pairings. It's really enticing and definitely increases the purchases because you don't have to figure out a great combination. (They're religious about restocking those end cap vignettes so no one ever misses out.)Parking is a little funky (you have to creep down a narrow road to get to more parking if the front lot is filled) but once you're back there you'll have no problem finding a spot.Warning: if you go during peak weekend hours, snagging a cart for your goodies will be hard. They get snapped up quickly and if you don't grab one, you'll have to patrol the main entrance near the checkout to snag one. More...
really? only one only review?wow. gardening nuts don't spend much time on line I guess. My yard is regularly featured on local garden walks and this is the place I buy most of my plants. I always buy all the plants for my workplace's gardens here - I tell them what I want to plant for annuals for the enterance at work each year and they find it for me. Including what I spend from work, I blow about $2000 - 2500 a year here and I have been happy with everything.great selection, helpful staff, great email coupons, 10% off freq buyers card, very good "nurse it back to health " clearance, great fall clearance sale on pots etc, nice display gardens- the only other one that comes close is "hidden gardens" in hinsdale, really nice job. Worth the drive to see these gardens.some annoyances:1. millions of "weekend" gardeners that descend on this place every summer weekend to make their mcmansion look "green". Yes, you, you in the SUV with your kid named "Kolby", in my parking place, making me park in the back lot and dodge other SUVs as I wheel my cart to my car. You don't care about plants... go buy your plants somewhere that doesn't care either. Like Home Depot. Don't worry though, they disappear by July. They buy up all the annuals I want LONG before frost season is over. No real gardener buys warm weather annuals before May 20th, give the rest of us a chance, huh? 2. I think some of the annuals are overpriced, but that is balanced by I also think some of the perennial plants are a steal! For everyday annuals, buy at some big box stores, better prices. come here for fancy annuals .....wait till july august and the whole place is on sale. why?, see #1, thoise types of gardeners can't keep stuff alive in july and august and they give up. Stuff goes on sale and people in the know grab it up.3. Their cute garden accessories are over priced, way overpriced. Yup- cute- but with a little shopping at thift and discount stores, you can find better stuff for the yard. More...
O.M.G. where do I even start. This place is amazing!!!They have so many different types of plants here. For example, they must have 20-25 different varieties of clematis plants. It is different than any other garden center that I have been to. They have sections where they actually plant the items that they have in the nursery so you can see how the plants look when they are with other plants and when they grow bigger. This also gives you a ton of ideas about how to plant things.Just go here and walk around - it's a beautiful place and I could spend hours here. The staff here is super friendly and they know their stuff. You can tell they are also passionate about flowers and plants.I only wish this place was closer....or maybe not because I'd spend my entire paycheck here. More...
Yes, they are pricier than buying from someone's yard sale or the local grocery but there are several things you will find here that you can't elsewhere:1. An amazing selection of everything, Flowers, shrubs, free lectures, furnishings, anything and everything for the garden, worm castings, etc. I love my Grape Bubblegum Irises and giant Allium.2. People who know gardening. Occassionally there is a 20 something here who doesn't know much but look for the seasoned, weathered gardening men and women, they are chock full of info.3. Amazingly healthy plants. With the exception of bad advice to dig something up at the end of season from an aforementioned 20something, I have never had a plant die from here, be diseased, etc. Now, the bad part, my average tab here is $200-400. But you do get coupons if you enter their savings program (free to you) for $25 off.I like this location better than the Plank Road Naperville location personally because of the layout, more roomy.
