The Brussels sprouts and the Lamb Dan Dan noodle’s were excellent. Spicy and intense. The okonomiyaki fries, on the other hand, were disappointing. Lots of fries, not enough sauce, especially when compared to the two previous dishes. Service was friendly and welcoming. The food arrived very quickly and well-prepared. More...

Came here a few weeks ago for date night with my husband. We absolutely loved the food and drink! The secret entrance was intriguing, however a little confusing to begin with (we were lucky a staff member had stepped out for a break so we could ask him how to get in). We really love that the kitchen is on full display, and really reflects the delicious flavors of the meals. Our only issue was that the night we decided to go was quite warm, and a Saturday night. Unfortunately we didn't make a reservation until later and it reflected on the fact that we were seated in the alcove, which was very warm and stuff. Perhaps some fans could be installed in there for patrons seated there. More...

Generally, themed restaurants and bars are not required to offer palatable food or even relatively enticing cocktails to draw a following. We visited, expecting only an atmospheric experience, and we were delightfully surprised to be dazzled by fresh, innovative cuisine that was was step beyond elevated bar food. I had a Fiji albacore bowl at brunch that was so pretty that I had to take a picture of it and it was equally delicious. Even the cocktails are highly impressive! Their mixologist is gifted. The atmosphere was even better than expected with glorious 1960s style tiki culture mixed with a modern feel. The service was exceptional. Well-done! We will return. More...

It was a neat environment. I didn’t try their signature cocktails or eat. I had a glass of wine outside on the patio. The service was kind of slow.

Modern tiki bar as a very obvious "speakeasy". great drinks, food was actually pretty great. My party got a wide assortment including sausage fried rice, Dan Dan (beef) noodles, shrimp pasta, pork belly/sort rib/shrimp mini bao buns.
Description was a little misleading on the bao buns. All menu items had a price next to the item, these were displayed as an option style saying 5 each making it seem like you would get 5 of each with no price listed. It was actually $5 for one of each and based on the size (picture tiny tacos) I would normally see priced at no more than $3. Mind you they were completely delicious! I was just dumb when I ordered one of each expecting 15 items and a small tray holding 3 "tiny tacos" was brought to me for $15.
Love that they honor reservations as opposed to other "tiki bars" in SD so we got our own designated table. Random volcano/fire/rain interruptions you love to expect.
Modern tiki bar: Decorations are what you would normally see, but spread out to where you feel more inside a Claim Jumper instead of the expected decor a lá clutter.
Great time, we're going back for sure!

The Grass Skirt is an outstanding Polynesian style tiki bar with a new twist, as the only entrance is a 1920s version "speakeasy" entrance in the kitchen. But once inside, the place is rocking with a 1950s vintage Swedish fireplace that roars when volcano sounds blast. The tiki style tapa cloth, Japanese floats, and bamboo accent what appears to be the best rum bar in town. And when I arrived on Wednesday night, there was a band playing South Pacific jungle tunes that made me feel I had sneaked into a tiki bar in some remote jungle somewhere. The Brussel Sprouts were outstanding! I plan to return with twenty to fifty of my closest friends as soon as possible. More...

The drinks were great. The decor was great. At 10pm on a Saturday this place turns into a pumpkin... early 00's dance club hip hop is the antithesis to Tiki. I can't imagine this place lasting long if they try to dip their toes in two separate pools at the same time. More...
