We stopped here after driving the Saddle Road from KOA. Definitely not a touristy place (great for us tourists that want to blend in). Organic, vegetarian/vegan fare all around. Easy going ordering at the counter while the woman's child was walking around barefoot in the kitchen (several others were preparing food in the kitchen).  We both decided to try the oat/buckwheat pancakes. I had blueberry pancakes with banana and papaya. Steve had pancakes with avocado and goat cheese on top. Both of us had maple syrup. Two pancakes was plenty! Neither one of us cleaned our plates. They were both really good. Mine weren't too sweet and had plenty of blueberries inside. His was an unusual combination, but he likes that sort of thing. We had to ask for more syrup. Clean and casual inside, we enjoyed it. More...

Tried and enjoyed Sweet Cane today. We got their garden gnome salad and the dressing was non existent but when asked for more we got it. We loved their mango bliss and go green smoothies. Usually when we get a green smoothie they taste like raw vegetables which is ok but this one had some sweetness to it that I really enjoyed. More...

After a long day of "being a tourist" lol, I was so excited to try something refreshing and delicious. I order a yummy smoothie and an even more delicious brownie. What I loved about this place is how environmentally friendly they are. Reusable glass jars, recyclable cutlery, and plenty of space for you and your friends. I wish I had stopped in a few more times before I left, but the time I did spend here deserves two thumbs up. More...

My family and I loved the delicious and vegetarian concept created by Sweet Cane Cafe. We yelped "delicious sandwiches" and we got what we wanted and more. My husband was hesitant because the menu was ALL  vegetarian. I got an avocado sandwich and husband got the Thai curry soup with quinoa. My boys shared a grilled cheese sandwich with chips (and they have so many unique healthy options cooked with no canola oil). Everything was delicious and we felt so satisfied and not tired like other sandwiches we've eaten. All the produce was locally grown too!! I couldn't leave without their gluten free banana bread and it was so so moist and didn't have that strange texture of other gluten free breads! My favorite part was how cute the cafe was! They had tables made of koa tree in unique shapes and sizes. There were fresh flowers on every table. They even had a live ukulele singer playing in the background. Everything felt like quintessential Hawai'i, with the relaxed and sustainable atmosphere. I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves healthy food and wants to feel the aloha spirit of the Big Island! Thanks for a wonderful experience!! Hope to come back soon! More...

Came here on a Saturday and it was very pleasant. This cafe is tucked away with houses which leads me to question how zoning laws work in Hilo, but I suppose I can learn to let go. They have lots of sanwhiches and almost all of them are just different variations of toast and avocado, but it's what the kids are into these days and id rather see the kids addicted to sweet cane than to cocaine. XDThe smoothies are extremely good, and very frothy. We had the banana strawberry smoothie and it was very good.tgey serve them in Mason jars because that's what the cool kids do these days. The best part was the worker who helped us named Liz. She is super chill and can draw owls, but if you call her lister, she does not like that. I have been told that if you call her Lizard she will give you that kamaina discount. Later haters More...

I've never actually eaten at the restaurant location but contacted Sweet Cane to cater my wedding in Pahoa last week. I live in Cali so I had to trust in the reviews of other people and hope that the food would be good. My husband & I are both plant based eaters and mostly gluten free, they seemed like the best fit for our dietary needs and for the location our wedding was in so we went for it.I have nothing but good things to say, it was really hard to pick what we wanted because they had so many delicious sounding options. We ended up ordering the Happy Buddha bowl, the taco bar, Lau Pele & mushroom enchiladas, and several raw pies in lieu of wedding cake. The food was so good!!! The taro chips were amazing, we didn't even have any leftovers by the end of the night. There was also this thick, orange sauce (maybe the macnut sauce?) and I ate it with everything for the days after it was so good. The sauce that pairs with the Buddha bowl was also amazing. Most of our guests were meat eaters and we had nothing but good feedback on the food. I was in raw pie heaven, we ordered 4 different flavors: vanilla with lilikoi, raspberry-chocolate swirl, matcha, and mango-coconut. The raspberry-chocolate swirl was my favorite although they were all delicious. We had around 30 guests and tons of food leftovers, the band that played our wedding got lots of food as well and they seemed stoked. Everyone devoured the leftover pies in the days that followed, we ordered 2 of each flavor so there was lots of leftovers, but I'm kind of glad we did because we got to enjoy them all week. The two ladies from Sweet Cane that set everything up were so friendly, sweet, and professional, I enjoyed their energy. The set up itself was very professional and the perfect size for our event. They showed up on time and food was served at the time I requested. Reusable utensils, plates, and cloth napkins were all provided by Sweet Cane which I appreciate. I'm glad they are not using disposable items for catering events and instead choose to reuse. The communication process in the weeks leading up to the wedding went smoothly and Cherub was super friendly in helping us out to plan it. I will definitely visit the actual location when I come back to the Big Island to eat some of their yummy food. Much love to Sweet Cane, thank you for providing healthy, plant based options that are delicious!!! More...

I love their macnut pesto sandwich. Shared some with my husband and he agrees that you can feel your body absorb the nutrients from this sandwich. I substitute the alfalfa sprouts with lettuce. This is a really nice café. Big bright cheery interior, great welcome, excellent fast service. I ordered a chipotle taro burger with cheese (which I split with a friend) and a generous "cup" of pumpkin vegetable soup. The soup was hearty and chunky. I would order that again. The sandwich was nicely composed and made with big red ripe tomato slices, shaved carrots, and a thin slice of cheese. The taro patty was a tad gluey and a bit bland and I would've liked some dressing or sauce or condiment to help pull the sandwich together. I'm glad I tried it but next time, I would probably try something different. More...

Great spot for meetings and cup of java. Fast wireless internet (much faster than Starbucks). Locally owned and family run. Owner is very nice. Comfortable atmosphere. Nice big tables. Very friendly and flexible staff. Ordered the Caesar salad today. The dressing seemed watered down and the salad didn't have much flavor. Salad was supposed to have feta cheese, but the amount was barely noticeable at best. I would not order the Caesar salad again. Fresh ground pepper for the salad would have been excellent. I would give 5 stars if all food was organic and the salad had more sustenance. More...

If you are a crunchy or a granola, this is your place. Organic and dietary friendly. The sandwiches/burgers were very filling and the variety of juices made the meal fun. Had several good meals here. Loved the buckwheat oat pancakes, especially the sweet version. And the tropic smoothie minus the cane juice. The cocoa matcha mock cheesecake was amazing. The garbanzo burger tasted good but the texture was a bit mushy. The beet salad was rather plain. The veg miso soup was very good. Finally got to try Sweet Cane Cafe with an old friend and I was not disappointed! Be careful not to park in any of the reserved stalls, which was a difficult task when I visited during torrential downpour. I hoped to try the taro burger, but they were sold out, so I had the ulu burger instead. We have ulu at home and can never find enough things to do with it, so I was curious to see how it would taste. I was scared it might be stringy or hard, but it was soft and delicious! They paired it with cheddar cheese, lettuce, and tomato for a perfect, healthy burger. I also had the acai smoothie. A Hilo treat! This spot is everything you could hope for in a cafe - terrific coffee, diverse and plentiful menu, sweet treats and a great patio. The space is full of light and has a warm vibe. We ordered the taro burger and the pesto grilled cheese sandwich on our first visit. I've never had a taro burger and this was moist, flavorful and satisfying. I do love pesto as well and that recipe certainly held it's own. We also tasted a couple smoothies which are not to be missed! Favorite place in Hilo! All menu items can be made vegan, and/or Gluten free. My meat eating friends enjoy this place too. The parking is small, but I have never once had a problem finding parking. They make delicious snacks like gluten free banana bread with that local fresh goodness. Smoothies, teas, kombucha, Elixirs, Essential oils, and Chocolate! Spices, shirts, nuts, and dried local fruits! Come check this place out. There is always an abundance of amazing desserts. The wellness shots are amazing and make me feel a boost of energy and health when I drink one. Black bean burger was okay - not my favorite. Caesar salad was also good but eggplant was not to my taste - an acquired flavor. Definitely healthy but wouldn't get it again. I am back now in sfo but if I have an opportunity to fly back, I would just travel for their gorgeous pancakes and the green smoothie. Wish I had tried more on their menu but good service, great ambience and the pancakes were just enough to wow me.I wish they open a branch here in Bay Area too or better still inspire people to learn and do something honest and good:) More...

Pitaya aka Dragon fruit smoothie. Enough said. Mainly because it was all I got to try because my meat eating husband was salty I brought him here. He got the chocolate crave smoothie which is delicious so he can get over it. Needless to say I need to come back with someone else maybe my sister. Anyways, l loves it! I love the menu thanking all the local farmers. Just yay all around. More...

We had the Pitaya Bowl, the Taro Burger, the Vegan Bagel, the Buckwheat Pancakes, Taro Fritters and Cassava Fritters, and a Coconut Mocha. The nutshell review: The food was tasty, but pricey, and they messed up our order quite a bit, so I didn't give four stars. The details of the food is below: Being GF and DF can make it hard to find options while vacationing or eating out. This place had so many options!!  It took forever to decide what to order. The Pitaya Bowl is like a fruit smoothie in a bowl topped with granola, banana, and coconut flakes. (See picture)Taro Burger:The soft patty is taro mixed with onion carrot and it's spicy. I saw bits of pepper in the mix and I assume its jalapeño by the color and level of heat. There were thin slices of carrot and alfalfa sprouts on the bun. Maybe an onion bun?  It was tasty for sure. This burger should be eaten fresh because the bun was getting soggy. Buckwheat GF pancakes:I ordered these topped with avocado and goat cheese. Another topping option is fruit and maple syrup. These were earthy and satisfyingly not sweet. Thin like a crepe, and delicious when rolled up and dipped in the syrup.Vegan Bagel:With avocado and cream cheese (vegan of course, and slightly spicy), alfalfa sprouts and tomato slice. Nice bagel! The coconut mocha was blended with ice   It had coconut milk, cacao (not cocoa), coffee, and ice. Delicious and smooth! I can taste the bitterness and dryness of the real cacao nibs, which is lovely!Taro Fritters and Cassava fritters: These were orders as a side for us all to try. You get three fritter patties per order. I'm not exactly sure which was which, but I say this review with 95% certainty:The taro fritter was soft and mixed with onion carrot and cumin. Tasty! The cassava fritter was yellow, crispy, and tasted like curry. It looked like a shredded potato fried patty, like a latke. (See picture) This was tasty if you like curry! They had cozy seats and relaxing island music. I liked the counters made of real wood slabs! I would come here for coffee and a treat with a friend. Their Vegan Coco Banana Bread looks yummy! I would love to come back! Pricy, but worth it for healthy food and to support a local place. More...

For the longest time ever, I had this weird Açai Bowl craving. I couldnt go for awhile because I was bombarded with exams to study for but I managed to go get one after my exam last week.It was my first time coming to Sweet Cane Cafe and it was spacious, clean and somewhat modern for Hilo, haha. This cafe is located off of this one street thats sort of considered residential area so its very quiet and nothing else is around. That is one of the reasons probably why I like this place a little more. There's a good amount of parking and the sign is pretty big so its really hard to miss.I went with a friend and he asked what's popular. We went in the morning and she said they are known for their Buckwheat pancakes and Açai Bowls. I came here with the intention of getting an Açai Bowl so I ordered that with additional option of 'Omega' which is just hemp seeds, other nuts with honey for $2 extra. My friend ended up getting the samething. Total came out to $24 ish and I guess thats pretty pricey. It was more than $10 each.We sat down and got ours not too long after. It was a big bowl even though we ordered the smaller size. It had generous amount of hemp seeds with maybe 5-6 thin slices of banana. I liked my Açai Bowl but for the price though, I dont know if it's worth it. I wish it had more banana.Nonetheless, it was satisfying and I might come back to try theit buckwheat pancakes. Sounds very interesting! More...

I've been struggling to determine how much I liked Sweet Cane; it isn't 5 stars, but it isn't 4 either. While I was in Hilo I went to Sweet Cane six different times, so I'm going to give them 5 stars just based on how often I found myself coming back. I don't think I've eaten at the same place that many times in two months my entire life. Compared to Big Island Juice Co and Conscious Culture this place seems to focus on raw-plantbased meals.  While their drinks leave a lot to be desired, I'm totally in love with (most of) the food. When I compare these smoothies to the ones at other establishments I find them a tad flavorless. One day my girlfriends and I ordered three different smoothies and they all wound up tasting like banana. After the third time getting a smoothie I finally learned my lesson and just stopped ordering them from here. Although Big Island Juice Co is more expensive I think their drinks are better. Sorry Sweet Cane. I've found that the food itself can be either hit or miss. The zucchini noodles are amazing and I recommend them, but I've found they can be rather inconsistent. The four times I've had it (yes, four) they each came out differently. One had a massive serving of avocado, another the pesto was watery (but still good!), another was chock full of nuts, and the last was a bit on the small side. The noodles however are always perfectly crunchy and the flavors of the dish will satisfy anyone. The nori wrap is interesting, and while I liked it the first time, the second time around it wasn't as good as the novelty had worn off. The salty flavor of the nori doesn't really fit in with the rest of the ingredients. It'd work if it was a tortilla or a lettuce wrap, but the creaminess of the avocado and the macnut-spread doesn't go with the ocean-y taste of the nori. I've had all three of their sandwiches (avocado, mac-nut pesto, roasted veggie) and I've gotta say the latter is the best (they're all solid though). I am surprised they don't serve vegan cheese on them however, seems sorta strange. The most surprising item from Sweet Cane is the pitaya bowl. I'm kind of picky about my smoothie bowls; I'll eat them anywhere, but it takes a lot for me to really love them. Sweet Cane may have the best pitaya bowl I've ever had. They don't bother with over-decorating it because the base of the dish can stand on it's own. It's perfectly blended and has an amazing consistency. More similar to ice cream than a smoothie. Very impressive. So far the worst items I've had are the taro burger, the fritters, and the pumpkin soup. The burger is what I assume people think vegan food tastes like: flavorless. There's no texture, just mush. I'll eat pretty much anything and even I couldn't get this thing down. I know it isn't a "no-meat" thing considering one of the best burgers I've ever had was vegan (Meet On Main if you're ever in Vancouver!). The three fritters (ulu, taro, cassava) are the sad cousins of a hashbrown. I had to visit the well-stocked hot sauce bar to make them edible. As for the soup: no, just no. I can't even explain how bad this was. If you're vegan/vegetarian I highly suggest this place. The food is great and not as expensive as some of the other health-food spots on the Island. The only issues are the inconsistencies, the slow service, and that sometimes they run out of supplies (and therefore food). More...

An extensive menu of unique smoothie combinations can be found here, along with the freshest farm-to-table fare. Their GO GREEN smoothie is what inspired me to start making my own smoothies! I've been a big fan since they first debuted with their $5 acai bowls back in 2012. Today you can get the original acai bowl for a reasonable $8 & it's just as filling & tasty. This is my absolute favorite place to get an acai bowl in Hilo! From the perfectly thick, creamy consistency (which I can never seem to replicate at home) to just the right touch of sweetness, their bowls never disappoint. But my go-to lately has been the Aloha Wrap. A brilliant combination of taro/ulu, avocado, sprouts, tomatoes, wrapped in nori. & that turmeric dipping sauce, oh my. The house made macnut pesto sandwich is also to die for. The Hawaiian Supaman is, in my opinion the richest, nuttiest delectable smoothie on the menu. Taro, & macnut butter make for a dreamy, guilt-free indulgence.   The Starfruit Matcha smoothie on their specials menu is worth a try -- with a subtle taste of matcha & sweet Starfruit. In short, everything I've ordered here over the years has been consistently delicious. Oh, & the new location is beautiful! Spacious, inviting, airy, & accommodating with large comfy seating & plenty of parking. More...

Sweet Cane Cafe is a little spot near UH Hilo that serves sandwiches, smoothies, and acai bowls. Located on Kilauea Avenue, right next to Tyke's Laundromat, it is a perfect place to stop by while waiting for your laundry to finish drying.Parking is ample and there is a table for two inside the cafe and a couple tables outside. The cafe seems to be known for their variety of smoothies that are made with sugar cane juice. I scouted the menu which consists only of veggies (sorry, meat lovers) and decided on the macnut pesto sandwich. It was full of sprouts and semi soggy bread. Thinking that I'd try something new, I also ordered the Spice It Up smoothie, but instantly regretted the spiciness and the taste of turmeric that does not go so well with mango. This cafe is a popular place for students, and I can see myself returning to grab a quick bite before heading to school. However, I will probably stick more to the smoothies that are fruity and sweet, instead of gingery. More...

This is definitely another awesome hole on the wall place in Hilo.  It has easily become one of my go to breakfast places for a delicious pitaya bowl done up omega style.  In addition to the banana slices, coconut flakes and granola that tops the pitaya ($7 for small),  for $2 more, you get a generous amount of chia seed, bee pollen and other kinds of seeds with a drizzle of local honey.  Can we say healthy and delicious?  Besides getting chia seeds stuck in my teeth...I love this breakfast or rather snack you can have any time of day.  Hilo brings out the 'naturalist' in me...sometimes I forget to wear deodorant and it is just fine. A great place to find good vegatarian.  Organic lovers should come here.  Eating a cold acai bowl on a hot and humid hits the spot.  The only thing missing is a better sitting environment.  Other than that, this is a must visit for vegetarian More...

Great smoothies in Hilo. The Vanilla milkshake is delicious and I like the coffee inspired creations. Limited seating and it takes a while to get your drink but it's worth it to not get one of those terrible "island oasis" syrup smooties. This is the real deal. Will be back to try their food. This place is close to UH Hilo campus and is a good place to grab a quick lunch. I've now tried the acai bowl and the farm fare salad with ulu and taro fritters. Both were very good. This was the first acai bowl I've ever had so I will have to try a few more to determine how good this one is compared to others. But I thought it was really tasty. I do wish there had been more bits to chew. The fruit part had a really interesting consistency and was like ice cream in a way. Over the acai were banana pieces and all was sprinkled with some oats (muesli?) and coconut shavings. I got a large and it was a LOT to eat. I could not finish it although I was very hungry when I started. On another occasion I stopped in for lunch and got the farm fare salad with ulu fritters and a friend got the same with taro fritters. I preferred the taro as the ulu was dry and insipid, but with the salad dressing everything was very tasty. We have a few more days here in Hilo and little time for lunch. There is a good chance we will be back tomorrow to try other things. More...

Im in town on vacation hanging out with my brother and family. I yelped while in San Diego, where I'm from, for places that provide healthy alternatives and i came across Sweet Cane Cafe. When i arrived in Hilo I asked Victor and wife if they were any good and they said yes. Soo here i am having one of their acai bowls. That day Sara suggested to get the original acai bowl. I'm glad I did! Soo delicious! One of the best healthy food places I have tried in a long while. Soo tasty and yummy that I will stop by everyday i can during my stay. If your in town and you want healthy, deliciousness, go to Sweet Cane Cafe. You guys are great, thank you! More...

Acai bowl or pitaya bowl. Period. I know you see the dollar signs and think "but should I get one?" Yes, yes you should. And then come back the next day and get another one. Don't settle for the lame acai bowl you get from some of those commercial corporate smoothie shops. Eat local and eat here! It is better tasting and better for the economy here! More...

3 words...macnut pesto sandwich. That's all that needs to be said! It is amazing! So fresh and so delicious. That pesto is freaking awesome! Everything here is made from scratch and they do their best here to be as healthy as possible. They also have a wide selection of drinks. I like the wellness shot but be careful, it's got a kick to it! Beware if you are sensitive to cayenne pepper. I have also had the sugarcane probiotic drink and it is good! Very sweet. I add a wellness shot to it which makes it very interesting. Not so sweet anymore. I would love to try something else from here but I'm afraid I'm hooked on this sandwich so I don't see that happening anytime in the near future. Love the Acai Bowls here! Best in Hilo for sure. The small is $7 but you can taste the freshness in all the ingredients so it's definitely worth it. AND, I can never ever finish a small alone in one sitting! They give a good portion. I also love their Kona Mango Salad. It's also $7. Everything tastes fresh and their sweet balsamic dressing is winners. This is a great place to go for healthy options! Highly recommend! More...

My fiancé and I finally had this Acai bowl for the first time after hearing about it so much. We've had our fair share of Acai bowls, and this one is pretty good! Not the best we've ever had, but definitely the best we've had on the Big Island. A little pricier side for acai bowls, but when you look at the portion it is actually worth it. I'll be back! Staff here is so friendly and polite! If I lived in Hilo I would be visiting this place on the daily. Everything on menu is fresh, healthy, and most importantly they use fresh, local ingredients. I got the macadamia nut pest sandwich, which was just the right portion. It came with sprouts, tomato, pesto, and cheese melted on their local bread. I loved that they put so much pesto that it was oozing out through the bread. You can never go wrong with too much pesto!I will definitely be back to eat here again the next time I am in Hilo. Only 4 stars for now because I haven't eaten any of the food, though I can't imagine that I would be disappointed. Prices are a little more expensive, but well worth it-all of the ingredients used are local and organic, and totally non-gmo. The menu will change slightly to whatever is freshest or most in-season at the time, so expect your favorite smoothie item to be tweaked from time to time. Their packaging is fully compostible, made from plants and recycled materials. I love the mission of the owners. Service is always very friendly, and it's convenient as a mostly to-go place. There are a couple tables indoors and several outside, though it's in a busy parking lot next to laundromat so not really the best place to eat if you're looking for ambiance of any sort. In addition to the menu, they carry different kinds of fruit, cookies and treats to purchase, as well as local jellies and assorted items. I've been here 3 times in 5 days, and had the acai bowl twice. It's pretty amazing, very filling, and just about the healthiest thing you can feed your body any time of the day. More...

The only things I have tried here are the acai bowls, zucchini pesto pasta I think it's called, and the pesto sandwich. The acai bowl and the sandwich tastes so good! However to me personally, the pasta wasn't that great. Whenever I go here I usually get the acai bowl. It's so frosty and I love how the granola is mixed into the acai instead of just piled on top. I do wish there were more toppings though such as strawberries and what not. The small size is huge!!! For me anyway. It's hard for me to finish it by myself. Sweet Cane Cafe is a great spot for vegetarians and vegans alike, or just anybody who is wanting fresh, organic, and local (not to mention GOOD) food.  I've been here twice so far and have tried the taro burger, mac nut pesto sandwich, and original acai bowl.  I would definitely recommend all three!  The small acai bowl was enough to keep me full for breakfast and into lunch.  The bowl contains acai, fresh macnut milk, bananas, berries, and is topped with granola, coconut flakes, and sliced bananas.  It didn't look too big but it sure is a lot to eat!  The taro burger is a must-try; the burger is homemade and is topped with cheddar, carrots, tomato, and sprouts on a toasted bun (I think that also spells Y-U-M).  The pesto sandwich was also really good, although I (personally) probably wouldn't get it again.  It's got macnut pesto, parmesan, tomato, and sprouts served warm between two slices of bread.  There was just a tad too much pesto in the sandwich and I felt like it overpowered the other flavors, but it was still yummy to eat.The food here proves that vegetarian and vegan can be healthy for you without skimping out on the taste and flavor.  On my next adventure here I hope to try one of their smoothies.  FYI the smoothie menu is just as long as the food menu.  There are a lot of options to choose from, so good luck finding your niche! Impressive and delightful little place with healthy grub.  Prompt and friendly service. I had the Taro burger. Very fresh and tasty although would have been nice to have some extra condiments or hot sauce for added flavor. My daughter had a nori wrap with delicious store-made sauerkraut.
